Last week I saw an educational presentation on Hinduism that used art to portray its messages.
It took place in the circle between hornbake and stamp (brilliant!) and had a focus on teaching the ideas of reincarnation and the circle of life.
It was a very interesting exhibit, I think especially because of the focus on art rather than big walls of text.
It was a cool experience to learn about the ideas of a religion presented with art in a large exhibit.

A few days ago I saw my friend’s junior recital.
It was cool to watch somebody I’ve played with in large ensemble perform in a solo/accompanied setting.
There was also a small ensemble piece in the program that was pretty interesting.
It is a fun experience to watch fellow musicians grow and develop further into solo repertoire during my time in college.

Yesterday I saw the Float Collective at Milkboy Arthouse.
It was a cool and interesting performance, with a variety of different music styles.
It’s nice to know that there is a setting for rising artists like these so close to campus.
I had a lot of fun and would definitely recommend friends to come and enjoy events like this one.

Last week there was a gallery of local elementary school students’ art pieces.
It was cool to walk through and see the kind of art people many years younger than me were putting out.
Also, since it was all local schools, there was a sort of intimacy that you don’t get when you’re looking at art by people far removed.
This display was in the Clarice Smith Performing Arts center where I have class, and it was a nice surprise to just stumble upon the exhibit.

advisor report
In 3-4 sentences, please describe what was discussed during your meeting.
We talked about my plans moving forward with the game (general format and ideas) as well as scheduling. Since I’m working with someone else, there is reason for concern at how we are going to handle the workload. Also, we talked about how my goals for the project can be more clear.
In 3-4 sentences, please explain what the next steps you will take with your project will be.
I will begin with the functionality of the meat of the game (the middle sections, ignoring exposition & ending sequences). Along the way, I will write the music and pair it to each subsection. Finally, I will add the beginning and end of the game, and then make the art more interesting if time permits.

I just saw Sarah Ruhl’s “Eurydice” at The Clarice.
It was an interesting take on the classic myth of Orpheus, of which I saw a different production and interesting take of last year on a field trip with Arts Scholars.
The angle of this play in comparison to the original story is that it is focused on Eurydice’s perspective, where she is faced with a decision between staying in the underworld with her father, or going back to life with her husband.
It is especially unique in that it gives reason and purpose to the conflict in the story, and doesn’t leave Eurydice in the role of a damsel in distress.
It was a fun experience and I would attend something like this again.

Awhile ago I made friendship bracelets with Darren and somebody told me that I don’t have to upload a blog post because the event was pentathlon credit.
Recently somebody told me to just make a post anyways because why not.
I saw one of my good friends there and we decided to make the friendship bracelets for each other, and this is an in-progress picture of the bracelet.
Making the bracelet was kind of relaxing, since I could take as much time as I wanted and it was a controlled process.

Last week I performed in the University of Maryland Repertoire Orchestra.
We played a few lesser known works like Scherzo Fantastique by Josef Suk, Romeo and Julia by Svendsen, but also some more widely known pieces such as Igor Stravinsky’s Firebird.
A few of my friends came to watch the concert and support me, so that was pretty nice.
It was a lot of fun to play such a high energy finale for the last concert of the semester.

I went to the arts scholars coffee & crafts last week.
We made potato stamps that we could dip in paint and use to imprint patterns on wrapping paper.
It was a fun way to both make something with paint and also meet new people.
Cutting my potato while seeing what interesting things everyone else was coming up with was fun.

Last week I went to the UMD Art Gallery for a gallery walk.
There were several students there as part of their art history class for studio art majors.
It was interesting because I was able to see many contemporary pieces from recent UMD graduates, but also several pieces from the impressionism to fauvism eras.
It was cool that even though I’m not studying studio art or art history at the moment, I was still able to learn a bit of how art evolved over the years.

Last week I performed with the University of Maryland Repertoire Orchestra.
It was a great experience to be able to perform the music that I have been practicing since the semester started.
It was also fun to be able to perform alongside some long-time friends such as the other person in the photo above.
Thanks to UMRO, I had the chance to play some standard music repertoire such as Tchaikovsky’s 5th Symphony.

Last week I went to the University of Maryland Symphony Orchestra concert.
This was legendary conductor James Ross’s last concert with the University of Maryland.
The pieces were moving, especially when another fellow retiring musician was brought out on stage to perform.
It was a privelege to witness the last concert that James Ross would conduct here at this school.

Yesterday night, I went to Stamp’s Hoff Theatre to see a showing of Rogue One.
It was fun to be able to see a mainstream production with my friends without having to leave campus for free.
The theater itself was warm and inviting, and had quality equipment for the full movie theater experience.Â
The best part was that it was at stamp - simply a few minutes walk from my dorm to see a movie! wow!

I went to UMD Taiwanese American Student Asociation’s event Mr. Wiffleball at Hoff Theatre last week.
It was a movie-parody-skit/male-fashion-show-parody presentation, where multiple guys competed for the most tongue-in-cheek but still impressive performance.
It was fun to see some friends in makeup on stage doing live parody comedy.
Beyond that, it was fun to see everyone performing for fun and laughs instead of what I’m used to (concerts - serious and more serious).

I went to the UMSO concert on March 4th.
They performed works by Strauss and Sibelius.
Beyond that, I had actually played an excerpt from one of the pieces before for an audition, so it was cool to see a live performance of the context behind it.
In an orchestra that I play in, we will be playing works by Sibelius so it was nice to get a feel for the composer’s style.

I went to the graduate dance concert a few days ago.
It was a graduate concert, so it was cool to see a high level of performance.
Also, I mostly attend music concerts, so it was refreshing to go to an event that i normally wouldn’t have.
The event has piqued my interest about performing arts beyond music, and I may return in the future.
