Souma: Adonis-dono, I’ve completed the preparations for the ‘Firefly Appeciation’.

Adonis: Mm. The mosquitoes in Japan are much smaller and weaker than those in my hometown; therefore, I just need to protect you well, Kanzaki.

Souma: ‘Protect’… Adonis-dono, the both of us are of the same age, and we’re both male.

I do appreciate you accompanying me during training sessions, but I do wish that you refrain from addressing me with the tone of voice you’d use on ladies or children.

I will cut down all that hinders me with this sword.

But, back to the topic at hand. Adonis-dono’s physique is really admirable; in comparison, it seems like I still have a ways to go with my training.

Adonis: Apologies. I did not mean to look down on you, Kanzaki.

The way my body is cannot wholly be attributed to practice. The environment in which I grew up is different from yours.

There are some bug species which are more dangerous than a large animal. One must also take precautions against the diseases they spread, even if you won’t sustain the same kind of serious injuries if attacked by a large creature.

As afterwards, there is only increasing amounts of pain that would be hard to bear… One’s life might also be in danger.

Therefore, upon hearing Akehoshi mention Japan even has ‘Firefly Appreciation’, a… custom where you sit around appreciating insects, I was rather shocked.

Souma: Ohh, so that’s why Adonis-dono was so stunned back then.

Akehoshi-dono is right. ‘Firefly Appreciation’ is a custom that has existed since ancient times.

Legend has it that everyone would dress up in their yukata, and head down to the riverbanks where the fireflies gather to watch them. Some places even hold sacrificial ceremonies, or song and dance performances.

Though, I’m sorry – my knowledge of ‘Firefly Appreciation’ only extends to what I’ve gleaned from texts.

My family would be busy preparing for the festivities every Summer, but I’ve never found a good time to participate.

I do wish to appreciate the fireflies with batchmates who share a similar interest. However, Hasumi-dono and Kiryuu-dono from our Akatsuki have been very busy during the Summer holidays; I cannot trouble them with my whims.

Not to mention, rather than ‘batchmates’, I feel like it’s more appropriate to use the term ‘seniors’ on those two…?

All in all, I’m very happy to have been able to receive Adonis-dono’s invitation this time ‘round. Time waits for no one – let’s head out now! Let’s bring all of the fireflies home… ☆

Earlier on, Akehoshi drew a map for me, but I’m unable to understand it. Could you take a look?

Souma: A map hand-drawn by Akehoshi-dono? He’s a rather enthusiastic person. Gimme gimme ♪

Erm… Hm. Adonis-dono, this… is this really a ‘map’?

The lines are a mess, very much like a child’s doodle, and it’s hard to figure out what is where. Not to mention, ‘Firefly Appreciation’ isn’t written anywhere – the destination’s not even marked out.

Only a few waves are scribbled here, with a short “the treasure is here~☆” next to it. I don’t understand what this is supposed to mean.

Is this some sort of trap, Adonis-dono…?

Adonis: Akehoshi is lively; sometimes I find myself unable to understand him. But he told me that he definitely drew the area with the most fireflies.

Souma: Oho, is that so. Despite Akehoshi-dono’s slight eccentricities, he’s not a bad guy who would bully his classmates, nor do meaningless things.

That’s the only place with words, and even an arrow pointing at it. That’s the place Akehoshi-dono wants us to go.

With this hypothesis… Ah, so it confirms things. These squarish things… These should be representative of Yumenosaki Academy. I think Akehoshi-dono used them for the school’s infrastructure.

So these large triangles can only be the mountains near the school.

We’re probably supposed to go to one of the riverbanks on that mountain. As for the particular location… It’s halfway up facing West.

This map is one that needs to be understood backwards. First, we need to ascertain the destination, then find a path to said destination. It’s a map that only people who want to go see the fireflies would understand.

As expected of Akehoshi-dono! What an interesting idea, one that’s hard to puzzle out ♪

Adonis: Kanzaki. Are ‘fireflies’ extremely precious items? Is it because they can glow? Why did Akehoshi call them ‘treasures’?

Souma: Oh. I don’t think it’s because they can ‘glow’… Fireflies are a common sighting in the Summer, and there’s a lot of other creatures that can glow too…

Our ‘Marine Bio Club’ Buchou-dono has also raised quite a few glowing fishes ♪

Speaking of which, I remember overhearing the seniors in my family talking about some legends related to the ‘fireflies’. Various ‘firefly appreciation’ performances across Japan also portray this.

I can’t say they’re bad legends per se, but… No matter how you twist it, they don’t really have any correlation to ‘treasures’ whatsoever.

Adonis: ……?

Souma: Adonis-dono, let’s just wait and see. Maybe later we’ll understand what Akehoshi-dono meant.

If I were to tell you now, I might affect your train of thought. There are some things that you should figure out for yourself instead of asking me all the time.

All in all, let’s not stand here talking mindlessly; we should set out as soon as possible. The day is no longer young after all.

…‘Transfer Student’, you look so lifeless now. Usually, you would’ve already talked back by now, saying stuff like “it’s still daytime, night hasn’t fallen yet”; even if I explain, you wouldn’t listen.

But, not talking back is also praise-worthy, yes? Would you like me to praise you?

Naaah, I think not. ‘Cause it’s too troublesome ♪

…Mm, why would I be here during the ‘nighttime’, and awake too? To be honest, the thing I cannot stand the most is the sun. I should be sleeping right now because I don’t have the energy, nor do I have the strength.

I wasn’t aware of this just now, but after hearing the ‘Transfer Student’ mention it, I found that rather unimaginable.

Perhaps it’s aaaaall Maa~kun’s fault?

I recently participated in a variety show that had a similar campus theme; even though we weren’t the ones being messed with back then, I still don’t wish to show such an embarrassing side to the fans that have been eagerly waiting for this…!

Natsume: Rei-nii-san, if you continue acting like this, the Little Kitten will start to panic. She looks like she wants to explain, but is reluctant to interrupt you.

Rei: Aish, it wasn’t my intention for you to make such a troubled expression, Little Miss.

In any case, ‘Spotlight Time’ is a variety show; not to mention, the Little Miss has already given us a brief rundown of the situation. About being teased… Well, I was just joking with you ♪

Rei: It’s fine, Sakasaki-kun. It’s not a bad thing for you youngsters to be energetic every once in a while.

Even though I’m only supposed to be the ‘Transfer Student’ as per ‘Spotlight Time’ agenda, how about we swap the topics around? I’ll go along with whatever you want me to do ♪

Natsume: Tch, my goodness… Why are you speaking on his behalf? Sometimes, I really feel that my senior is even more useless than Baru-kun himself.

(Sakasaki-kun has been complaining non-stop, but I’m relieved to be able to see him fool around with others so childishly, not worrying over things that kids his age should be worrying about…)

(Hehehe. For I myself am the same… The fact that I can take a leisure gander around the school grounds like a normal person, like a normal high-schooler… It’s incredible.)

Rei: …? ……? Is my vision going bad from old age? Is the tie hanging from your neck not green? Why would you suddenly use ‘Transfer Student’ to refer to her as though you’ve returned to the year prior?

Subaru: Eh. We’ve always been using that to refer to her though; is there some other nickname?

Rei: Mhm. Turns out it’s just an illusion… Given how early I woke up…

Subaru: Wah, Sakuma-senpai really fell asleep standing upright! Anzu, Natsume, come see this! Let’s begin our warm up – the Wake Sakuma-senpai Up Challenge ☆

Natsume: Baru-kun, you shouldn’t play tricks on Rei-nii-san while he’s still asleep. Don’t forget, we’re here in school today for ‘Spotlight Time’.

Subaru: Natsume, you’re such a spoilsport— Anzu didn’t say anything to stop me; and now, the follow-up that I spent so many braincells brainstorming can’t even be used!

I stayed at a nearby hotel last night. Although I am unsure why I was unable to get a good night’s rest, I still managed to get here before the school bell even rang.

Thinking about that stage… I never once considered the possibility that that student would’ve been a student from Yumenosaki Academy’s regular course. For today’s shoot, we even had to borrow one of the idol course’s classrooms…

In order to fulfill that fan’s wish, I have no qualms playing the role of a student who’s coming to this school for the very first time. But for me, it’s somewhat lacking the vibe of a… ‘transfer student’…

Natsume: Hehe. While that might be the case, Rei-nii-san need not worry about disappointing the fan at all.

The Yumenosaki Academy that you’re looking at now may not look much different from what it usually does, but it is a far cry from the idol producing school of your memories…

Goddamn! This is too hard. Even though mangas would sometimes contain panels that mess up the story’s timeline, or scenes that are so shockin’ even without containin’ a single line of dialogue—

But this is a frickin’ instruction manual. Isn’t it a little too unrealistic for it to only contain pictures and zero words?!

Aah~, whatever. I’ll just set up all of these components first and have a look-see…

Tatsumi: It is rather difficult to comprehend.

Jun: ……

UWAHH!HH!H!!! T-Tatsumi-senpai!? Y-you— When did you even get’ere?!?

Tatsumi: Apologies, I accidentally spoke out loud. I scared you, didn’t I?

I’ve walked past this area a couple of times by now. Seeing as you’re still hunched over, pouring diligently over some study materials, I couldn’t help but feel curious. So, what are you working on, Jun-san? This is an instruction manual, right?

Jun: Erm… actually…

Jun: Hehe, it’s finally complete! It looks exactly like the sample picture, too.

Without Tatsumi-senpai’s help, who knows what it’ll end up lookin’ like. I’ll let Mary have her fun with this spray bottle toy while the weather’s still kinda hot.

All in all, I’m real thankful for ya, Tatsumi-senpai~!

Tatsumi: None of that now. I’m glad to be of assistance to you, Jun-san. I’ve already tried summarizing the parts where instructions were unclear. Afterwards, I’ll have to trouble you to forward my feedback to the toy’s manufacturer in hopes that we’ll be able to assist those facing similar difficulties.

Even with that said, we managed to overcome some rather difficult portions through pure intuition alone. To err on the side of caution, shall we test out the toy before handing it over to Mary-san to play with?

Jun: Mm, that’s fair, Tatsumi-senpai. Lemme see… You’re supposed to pour water in here, select the power of the spray, and press this button—

Then again this method is hella useful! I managed to fill the missing piece, and also managed to channel a better understanding of knight-errants into the piece! Even though I spent a lot of effort on this, seems like the end product makes it all worth it ☆

Tsukasa: Even though your drive to keep on improving is something we should learn from, Leader, please allow me to enquire — why is this book still in your hands? Weren’t you supposed to return it yesterday?

Leo: Err… Y-you see… After saying my goodbyes yesterday, I walked towards the lost-and-found while reading the book…

But I was too engrossed, somehow walked into an unrecognisable area, and got lost…

It took a lot outta me to get myself back somewhere familiar, but by then the sky was getting dark, so I just went home…
