For the month of July, I'm taking pin-up/character commissions on VGen!

It's been many years since I have so I'm easing myself back in - fairly straightforward "surprise me" style comms, SFW only. Hit me up if you're interested or shoot if you have a question! Link here:

While the service is marked as "sensitive" this is just to ensure all my clients are adults since the option for sexy sfw stuff is here. Sharing appreciated, though at the same time my target audience for this month is mostly people who follow me and have been interested for a while anyway! If this month goes well my intention will be to re-open in October (I have two personal projects planned for August/September and don't want to overwhelm myself), hopefully with a few more options including spicy stuff etc. Will see how we go!

Chamomile Comic Trivia #33

#168 - Book

We begin to lead into the nearly-inevitable D&D-inspired arc that was sure to happen eventually as soon as my friends and I got into playing it. We had fairly recently wrapped up what felt like "Season 1" of our campaign (featuring my OC Willow) and this was a few months into the pandemic so I guess I was missing it! Chamomile is often seen reading so doing a few jokes about Adventure Game Books felt like a nice segue into it. Of course, "Choose Your Own Adventure" is apparently a brand, so Cammie instead is reading a Determine Your Own Expedition" book, specifically "The Fate of the Wizard's Rod", a certified classic.

#169 - Read

Nothing particular to say about this one, but it is a "physical comedy" sequence I'm still pleased with. Cammie is clearly a filthy casual - reader comments reminded me that adventure game books typically require you to track stats/inventory and make notes, something I admit to forgetting. Cammie here is apparently happy to raw-dog her adventure - I definitely used to play them that way when I was a kid - I couldn't be bothered with all the tracking stuff (or even dice rolls!) and would just assume success on all scenarios that required a particular item/statistic/roll, only really caring about the pure "just make a choice between these options" moments.

#170 - Popular

A lot of meta nonsense in this one, obviously highlighting the author's real-life reason for the incoming scene, referencing DnD directly without actually referencing it, and even a bit of playing around with the comic medium which I always love to do, with Vienna literally talking over Chamomile here. The gag at the end is a bit of a non-sequitur but I still really like it as a cute little Cammie moment. Also of importance in terms of character portrayal: 1. How genuinely and completely interested Cammie is when Vienna starts nerding out, putting her book down and everything (above) and 2. how good I drew her bosum in the last panel.

#171 - Characters

Our initial DnD group was as broad as this and I got plenty of comments from players saying they've played with all the covered types here too. While I was formulating some early ideas for Sam and Vi's eventual relationship, I regret not being able to sprinkle any significant foreshadowing here! At this stage Sam and Vi don't know each other very well, and Sam barely speaks in this arc because I was still figuring out her personality generally.

It was certainly a challenge drawing Brianna's character - I decided not to worry too much about making sure he was in a really distinctive unique art style, since after all the comic's reality is depicted in a stylised manner as is. Obviously Bri's situation is telling on myself a little here - while I don't come up with massively elaborate backstories for my DnD characters, they ARE all pretty hot in some way or another.

Despite the lack of Sam-related foreshadowing, there was a tiny bit with Vienna here. While everyone else looks on with amusement at Bri unveiling her type to be a sympathetic, troubled handsome elf man, Vi's look of disappointment is exactly that, since she is secretly crushing on Bri at this point and she mostly certainly doesn't feel like there's too much crossover between handsome elf man and herself.

One of these days I should draw everyone's characters properly! The thing is they would all require actual character design, I don't imagine the characters as just the comic characters in cosplay - as Bri's illustrates.

Oh, on that note, I suppose it should be said that, unless I do a spin-off thing of some kind - I kinda liked the appeal of keeping the comic grounded by never cutting away to the imagined DnD campaign. As well as doing so meaning I'd have to wrestle with making it clear which character was who using some kind of iconography or resorting to cosplay depictions - I just liked the idea of sticking to the slice-of-life vibes of Chamomile (the comic), by keeping the arc about the established characters and their real life interactions.

#172 - Pebbled

A standard DnD play gag cliché really, but hopefully my personal spin of it with my characters was enjoyable! Fun fact, when coming up with the riddle in Vi's dialogue, it took me right up until the VERY end of working on this comic to notice my very silly mistake regarding how I had described the statue of the one-armed man:

Obviously the above is corrected in the final comic! Random thought but typically in real play, I'm always terrible at these big described riddle rooms in DnD, especially when our DMs have used ones as-is straight out of the campaign book. I just wanna do fun Zelda puzzles haha.

#173 - Reach

Was fun to design everyone's oldsonas for the final panel here. Again, shame to not imply anything with Vi and Sam here, but at least both their left hands are out of view, nothing to suggest they aren't wearing wedding rings! Of course the final panel has become non-canon as it stands due to them definitely playing again since in the comic, so don't worry too much about it, haha.

The cliffhanger of their campaign is also sort of similar to how the aforementioned first major leg of our real life campaign ended. Not as a direct reference, but because I just needed something dramatic for Vienna to end on and nobody's gonna know. Until now!!
