180 Days of Teaching & Hip Hop: What's Real Anymore?
What’s good, good people?
There are many stories left to be told. Everyone has a different story and each of them are interesting and thought-provoking. I did not live a life full of encounters with the law, drugs, and wild sex. To me that does not give me creditability in the circles I am interested in being credible with. That is not to say, I don’t have a past we all do, yet I am not trying to impress drug dealers, prostitutes, strippers, pimps, and criminals.
As a school teacher one of my main battles is to convince some of my students there is more to life than those aforementioned lifestyles. I am a school teacher and have been for the last five years. Of those years I have also been pursuing my music career. I see myself as a living and breathing example of not having to live a dark, dangerous life to make it in the music business.
Contrary to popular belief, our favorite mainstream artists are not always high, with big booty, promiscuous women, and driving fast cars. Their lives are much more than that. Some of them are fathers, husbands, caretakers to relatives, charitable back home in their communities, and really upstanding individuals. It is all about what they choose to project. Me being on the outside looking in, I see myself as one of many (Yes, there are many of us out there.) individuals in Hip Hop willing to telling different stories. Stories of overcoming, not following the crowd, staying motivated when no one else can see your vision, etc.
Truth is, we’ve all been there. My challenge to everyone who reads this blog is to embrace the positivity around you and be mindful of the things you hear, see, and say. Reason being, eventually the things you hear, see, and say most will become your reality.
PROTECT YOUR HOUSE!

180 Days of Teaching & Hip Hop: In My Own Lane
I'll be honest my music probably won't catch your attention if you are into these following types of songs:
"Girl Shake That Ass" "Pop the Molly" "I Got $50,000 in My Mattress" "I'm So High on this Kush" "I'm Hitting All the Junts" "I'm Trapping and That's All I Know" "10 Ways to Cook Dope in my Grandmama's House" "I Be on That Lean" "Big Rims on my Whip" "The Ice on my Wrist" "I Was the Big Homie in Prison"
Just to name a few...
I have a little more substance and layers to my craft. Nothing against those who make this brand of music and certainly no disrespect to those who bump it!
You may be saying, "Hell, what else is there?" To answer that question: "There's me!" I am not going to say, “I’m different from everybody else.” Simply put. “I am ME!”
I make Life Music! It represents daily struggles, overcoming failure to achieve success, relationship ups and downs, going hard, and ultimately getting whatever out of life you so desire. There is a song I've written or will write that will speak to you or you will relate to. That is the POWER OF MUSIC! All you have to do is LISTEN!
I’m nine days into this school year. Five years as a teacher. I’m blessed. I got my students writing daily. Some are still resisting. I can see them really trying though. I have my “knuckleheads” and my nonstop talkers. I’m having fun though. I really want all my students this year to walk away with an appreciation for writing. If they could walk away with a love for writing that would be even better.
I’m settling into the school year though. The early start time is beating me down. I’ve found my answer to staying alert in my Protein shakes. I got performances coming up and I am planning to hit the open mic scene in the city hard. I have new project I am working on and am very excited about. You’ll be hearing more about that soon. Trust me.
Let me leave you with a wise word... “Be better than the days you’ve already lived. Be a light, for you never know who’s reaching out from the darkness!”

180 Days of Teaching & Hip Hop
What’s good, good people?
I’m starting this blog as a way to document my journey as a school teacher and hip hop artist. It’s an odd and very different combination. It has not been easy so far, nor do I expect it to be going forward. The one thing I want to stay true to is myself during this process. It’s so easy to take shortcuts and try to cut corners, but that really is not how I operate.
I’m not trying to be the next anybody, I simply want to be the first J. Fields. I hope to appeal to all people, young and old from all walks of life. We’re three days into the school year and I have a vision of how to make the most out of my opportunities. This is my fifth year teaching and I am teaching Creative Writing for the first time. What a better way to marry my present career to the career I am striving towards for my future? I feel like I will truly get to be myself inside and out the classroom.
The support from my friends and family has been amazing so far. I did not always have everyone’s support. My grind, hustle, and talent has changed the hearts of some of my biggest detractors. As I grow my brand, I want to grow the support. I cannot exist in this realm without the support of others. I have respect for those who have come before me. I respect those running their own races as I am running mine.
This is NOT a competition. As the great Grant Cardone says, “There is no shortage of success!” There is plenty of room for me to leave my mark on this world and do meaningful work over my span of life.
That being said, “180 Days of School, 9 months to grow, to move, to achieve."
We’re three days in. There are 177 days left. Let’s build the empire!
PRAY. THINK. ACT. REPEAT.
Be Blessed!
We just Fields Tripping!
