LOONAverse: Time Loop Theory & Hi High Choreography

Hey gays and gals and gay gals. With the xx comeback so soon, I thought I’d share with y’all the stuff I noticed over the millions of times I watched Hi High performances and Original Choreography Vers. Namely, what they say about the LOONAverse storyline, and the hints they give about the xx comeback.

Questions I am attempting to answer:

How did Olivia Hye go from burning mattresses in Egoist to reconciling with Yves in Hi High?

What the heck is up with the cassette tapes?

What’s Olivia’s connection to OEC?

How is Go Won going to save LOONAverse?

I try answer all of them using what I call the Time Loop theory.

Disclaimer: These are just some ideas of a girl with too much free time and a lot of love for the Loona girls. I hope you find these thoughts interesting or cool, but if you don’t that’s fine too.

So…we’ll see how this goes.

Adam and Yves

(I’ve heard rumors that Chuu, Go Won, and Olivia Hye were each almost named Adam, but I don’t know any sources. If anybody can clarify the Adam situation, that’d be great thanks)

Adam and Eve—I mean, Yves—are the first humans. Yves’s solo is called new. Yves is the first girl in yyxy to leave Eden in love4eva. I mean, if there’s any place to start the storyline of the LOONAverse, it’s…HeeJin? LOL. That’s what BBC wants you to think. But we all know the MVs aren’t presented to us in a linear fashion. For example, we know that Sweet Crazy Love comes before Eclipse.

To me, the LOONAverse starts with Yves, and this is the part of Hi High choreography that clinches it for me.

Yves’s finger gun make all the other girls jump—like they were propelled to spring into action, all because of Yves.

regarding the rumored day/night subunits

the members that are supposedly in the day subunit (Yves, Kim Lip, Jinsoul, Hyunjin, Heejin, Olivia Hye) are all very strong dancers who are great at powerful, edgy choreography. Vocally, they tend to be strong and have sort of sultry or smoky tones. Thematically, Yves and Olivia Hye have their duality, Kim Lip and Jinsoul have their twin-like messenger roles in Love Cherry Motion, and Heejin and Hyunjin have their package deal vibe as 2jin in early 1/3 b-side videos. Jinsoul, Heejin, Hyunjin, and possibly Yves (did we ever confirm that she’s the girl running in circles in the loonatic mv?) have all appeared in music videos for other subunits.

meanwhile, the members in the night subunit (Go Won, Choerry, Yeojin, Haseul, Chuu, ViVi) have historically been given more cutesy choreography and, while they can pull off the edgier, harder concept (see: favOriTe), I think they may be more at home with lighter, softer concepts. Vocally, the members are either powerhouses (Haseul and Chuu), vocally solid but you’d be surprised to hear them highlighted on a ballad (Choerry and Yeojin), or soft… dare I say crunchy vocalists (Go Won and ViVi). Thematically, Haseul and Yeojin appeared as Choerry’s friends in LCM (in addition to be paired together in My Melody), Chuu and ViVi have both been involved with Yves, and Choerry appears in both new and One & Only.

Thematically, I think the “night” subunit might have a mysterious, lost vibe (like Let Me In, See Saw) or a cute but slightly melancholy vibe (like My Melody, Everyday I Love You, One & Only). I’m expecting yearning and searching from them, but I also wouldn’t be surprised by a dreamy, naive sort of thing–to pull from yyxy’s lore, the sort of innocence that is lost after eating the forbidden fruit.

To follow, I’d guess the “day” subunit will be more direct and intense, but also radiating a sort of dangerousness that comes with forbidden knowledge.

Maybe the “day” subunit is such because they have been illuminated, while the “night” subunit is still dreaming.

Some Thoughts on Egoist:

- the background cycles through four colors -> maroon (Yves), grey/black/white (Olivia), pink (Heejin), and blue (Jinsoul)

- It seems to be maroon most often when she’s singing about the person she’s getting over. She also doesn’t get picked by Yves’s crane, the wolf plushie gets dropped by the crane, she burns a maroon cassette tape, and she burns Yves’ swan plushie. From this I’m concluding Olivia is singing about Yves, who she lost when Yves rebelled and dropped from Eden. She was hurt and longing for Yves and the other three girls who left Eden for a long time, the song is about her moving on from Yves to love herself instead

- The MV turns blue as Jinsoul appears, this is after the first drop (Olivia waking up on the white feather bed at the beginning of the MV), but before the second (the red feather bed). She drops into/wakes up in Odd Eye Circle’s world first. There she encounters Jinsoul. There’s a parallel between Olivia pulling out Jinsoul’s earbud in Sweet Crazy Love and Jinsoul pulling out Olivia’s in Egoist. The SCL pull is to ‘wake up’ Jinsoul to go find the other members of OEC. The pull in Egoist is what convinces Olivia that rather than destroying Eden unit she should move on.

- The bg color then turns majority pink, as Olivia begins to love herself. We know from photos that Heejin was being her stand in double, but they might not actually be the same person, it might just be because that’s significantly easier to film than shooting Olivia on both sides of the hug. I’m not gonna say for sure if she is or isn’t. What I am going to say is, Olivia, loving herself, drops herself down again, falls again, into Loona 1/3′s world. The second fall, the bed with the red feathers, is her passing through to Loona 1/3′s world, which is why there is only one sun and she can meet Heejin on the roof.

- There’s a brief series of shots around 1:40 where you can see each of Eden unit in the warehouse. If you go to that time stamp and use the > key, you can see frame by frame each girl, broken up by shots of black. Each girl arrived in 1/3′s world in the warehouse after falling from Eden, one after another but not at the same time. 

- The coloring at the end was the same washed out red and blue that Yves was in during her Up&Line teaser. It’s also just Yves’ and Jinsoul’s representative colors. Blue and red are often used as ‘opposite’ not in any color theory sense but rather just as a dynamic. That is why, Olivia on her quest to get back to Yves, the first to leave her and Eden, finds Yves’ opposite, Jinsoul, who changes her thinking.

-Full theory: Olivia Hye is the creator of Eden, and she loved the three girls of Eden dearly. Yves one day at the apple and fell from Eden, which broke Olivia’s heart. Yves fell into Loona 1/3′s universe, started having a good time, and eventually met Vivi, who is becoming human again. Chuu, who was in love with Yves, kept trying to eat the apple to fall as well, but her apple was green because it isn’t her fruit. She was acting on the childish assumption “Yves likes apples so if I give her an apple she’ll like me” without knowing what the apple was. When she bites her apple it turns red because she finally realizes what the apple is and what she wants. She eats her actual fruit, the strawberry, falls from Eden, and ends up in Loona 1/3′s world where Haseul finds her. The two girls try to convince Gowon to join them, but Gowon runs from them. She needs to make the decision for herself to not sit in the dark, but rather become what she wants to be. She has to open the windows and eat the fruit herself. Once she does, her hair turns blond and she falls from Eden and finally gets to be the self she wants to be (the crown). We don’t see her falling into Loona 1/3′s universe, but we know from Up&Line that she is there, and she sends Hyunjin the bracelet. Olivia is hurt and upset that all of them have left her, but largely blames Yves as the one who started it. Olivia decides to drop to destroy them, hence the lighter and the “destroy all things” caption. However she doesn’t eat her fruit, the plum, so she ends up falling into OEC’s universe instead. She meets Jinsoul, who changes her mind. Olivia decides to love herself again, eats her plum (it looks similar to an apple I know but the juice on her lips and the color of the fruit definitely mean its a plum), and finally falls into Loona 1/3′s world. However, she’s no longer there to destroy things, so she pauses on the roof, unsure. Heejin, her counterpart, comes to the roof to meet her.

EDEN UNIT

Eden Unit showcases the struggle of whether it’s best to remain in the limits of Eden where you’re told everything is perfect, and breaking out from that and doing your own thing- therefore creating ur own definition of what’s perfect.

Yves represents a god. she is knowing and powerful. she is also in control as you can see in ‘new’ where a claw machine is often depicted. 

Chuu is a resident of eden, like adam and eve. she adores yves as her god and loves her, wanting to stay with her in eden. she prances about trying to impress yves with offerings.

Go Won represents lilith, who controversely stood up for herself saying she’s on equal grounds as adam in the bible. lilith is torn between being seen as good or bad hence why there are two versions of go won. 

Olivia Hye is lucifer (aka satan) the fallen angel that became a demon after demanding that they didn’t need god/yves and that they wouldnt mold to her command and her song embraces herself even after her fall.

LOONA: The Forbidden Fruit

Hi guys, its been awhile! I’m back with another LOONA lore breakdown. Check out my YeoJin and Go Won MV Breakdowns. Remember this is all speculation and theory!

The latter members of LOONA are tied to a particular fruit. Each fruit represents a version of the “Forbidden Fruit” from the biblical Garden of Eden. The Forbidden Fruit is the fruit of knowledge of good and evil. Desiring this knowledge, Eve eats the fruit and later tempts Adam to do the same. When each member eats their fruit, they obtain knowledge as well.

Choerry’s Cherry: the cherry symbolizes innocence and chastity. But once plucked and eaten, the innocence is lost. Choerry is originally in the innocent, pure world of LOONA 1/3, but after eating the cherry, she falls into the seductive, dark world of OEC. The knowledge the cherry gives her is transportation/portals. She learns of the portals between the worlds of LOONAVERSE and everytime she eats the cherry, she can travel through portals. 

Yves’ Apple: the apple represents love and beauty, but also temptation and discord. Out of all of the members, Yves willingly falls into the temptation of her Forbidden Fruit. The knowledge she receives from eating an apple is a connection/communication to each member. The apples allow her to contact members across worlds (ViVi, Choerry), but does not work all the time if the members are too far. 

Chuu’s Strawberry: strawberries symbolize love, happiness, and acceptance. When dreaming about eating strawberries, it means love is coming into your life. This predestined love is the love she gets from her members and the knowledge she receives is a happier version of herself. Chuu also eats a green apple, but since the apple isn’t her destined fruit, it only gives a glimpse of her ‘true self’ (happy and in love).

Go Won’s Pineapple: while the other members were tempted by their fruit, Go Won actively avoids hers. Once she eats the pineapple, she gains the knowledge of her true self and accepts herself and role in LOONA. The pineapple represents hospitality; Go Won was hostile and avoided her members, but after eating her fruit, she welcomes them.

Go Won MV Breakdown

First of all, I was so off on my teaser prediction lol! But, here is what I quickly pieced together from the One and Only MV. I’ll probably edit later with more info and better pictures! 

1. Symbols: Pineapple and Butterfly. I was right about her fruit! And Go Won is the first insect in LOONA. I will get back to her animal later.

2. Her world is dark and full of terrors (lol wrong reference). Go Won’s world is completely dark and she says that she enjoys the darkness and likes being alone “that moment when the sun falls asleep, I get happy for no reason”.

3. The secret door has opened: this was one of the quotes in her teaser pics. The door/portal that links Go Won’s world to the LOONAVERSE has been opened by other members. She hides and runs from them. However, the opened door lets light into her world. Her world symbolizes her heart, she is opening up to others (forcibly).

4. The Shadow: the shadow represents her real self. Its what Go Won wants to be and she realizes that the more her world opens. Her shadow often runs to the light (which results in it growing too/becoming more real), she follows

5. The Lights: this was subtle but the lights/chandeliers start to turn on in her world. She realizes that the only person that can truly brighten her world is herself “the only person that can shine a light in my heart is me, one and only”

6. The Veil: the veils she uses actually symbolizes a cocoon a caterpillar makes before becoming a butterfly. She is changing, becoming who she was meant to be.

7. Blonde Go Won: she realizes who she is. LOONA 1/3 was about innocent love and first crushes, OEC was about taking charge in love, the 3rd unit will be about self-love. Go Won becomes who she was meant to by loving and accepting her true self, and will be the leader of the 3rd unit. This is speculation based on her wearing the crown. (But the crown may mean something else, idk?!)

8. Hidden Members: Yves and Chuu were obviously here. HyunJin (as her animal) makes an appearance, most likely using her information to find Go Won. But 2 or 3 other members appear in the background. I think they are Kim Lip and JinSoul based on their hair color and height (two figures standing behind Go Won). Edit: Choerry also makes an appearance and drops the apple into Go Won’s world. Right after she drops the apple, the chaos starts and she is chased by Yves and Chuu. At the end, the 4th member may be walking towards the light (could also be Go Won leaving her world and entering the LOONAVERSE)

Where is YeoJin?!

Hi LOONA Stans! I’m starting a series where I try to answer you guys’ questions about the lore of LOONA. I was recently asked about YeoJin and how she fits into the story. So here it goes and as always, feel free to ask me questions or request more info!

YeoJin is introduced as the 4th member of LOONA. She then meets Haseul and later Choerry in Love Cherry Motion. 

After Choerry eats a cherry she is transported into another world/dimension, but what happens between that time is what I want to focus on. Lets go to our 9th member Yves. 

When Yves plays the claw game in her mv new, she grabs a stuffed animal that represents one of the members. But, instead of getting an animal, she gets an apple in return. One of the apples she gets from the game is YeoJin’s.

Kinda like the darkness between stars, Choerry goes through darkness when crossing into other worlds. Between this darkness, she catches YeoJin’s apple from Yves. 

This leads to a series of events. YeoJin gets pulled into the darkness. Her apple (which represents YeoJin) is later dropped in Go Won’s world/Eden. But, no one eats the apple, which means she is not able to leave the darkness and is trapped.

Here’s another tip of how I came to this conclusion. Choerry has knowledge of where the portals/doors between worlds are for each LOONA member (whether she can use any of them besides her own is the question). However once she crosses into her world/OEC world, she loses the location of YeoJin’s portal. We also see in OEC’s Girl Front and LOONATIC, that they have a map of all the portals. But one is missing. YeoJin’s portal is missing because her connection is gone.

Overall: YeoJin is trapped between worlds because of Choerry and Yves.
