I was just going through my screenshots and found this and it's just another "I fucking hate the tiktokification of fanfiction"

1) How the fuck do you not consider a oneshot to be "a real fic"? Oneshots are fanfiction too (for fuck's sake)

2) What the fuck do you call a fanfiction that's under 7k???? I have read fics that are 100 words long that deserve to be in museums. If you are only reading fics that are longer than 5,000 words, you are missing out on so much art

3) A "long fic" being OVER 150k???? FUCKING EXCUSE ME ?????? I consider a long fic to be anything over 20k (and anything between 8k and 19k is still "medium" to me). Where the fuck are you finding 150k fics anyway???

(I always commend fanfic authors who can write really long 100k and 200k fics because I am currently writing my first 100k fic and it's hard. But nobody should be expected to write fics of that length on a regular basis. Because you will get burnt out and wanna die, and you will come to hate a hobby that you once loved.)

Like these are the type of people who get upset at fics not being complete and then demand that fics be between 100k and 150k. And they get angry if the author gets burnt out and abandons a longfic partyway through. This makes me so fucking mad

I just realised why low engagement on the fics upsets us fic writers so much. It's not I needed the attention and I didn't get so I'm upset. A part of it is because we want acknowledgement for our work, but after I updated a chapter a few days ago, and seeing no response from the readers, it feels like I wanted to celebrate the story we love and nobody else showed up. It's a lot like organising a party and hoping people will come, but you're the only one who was there and then you go home, feeling disappointed and friendless. It is an extension of wanting to be acknowledged. And maybe something else too. I don't know if someone else feels the same.

That about sums it up! When things like that happen, I’d suggest finding a local way to celebrate with yourself- go for a walk, get some ice cream, spend time with a friend, ect

Whenever I see a tag or an author's note that is like "without so-and-so this wouldn't have been possible," my heart explodes. It's like this beautiful little glimpse at the webs of friendship that hold this whole place together, and how we connect to each other: I love you because I love that person and they love you and therefore you're in my circle now and on and on and on, until we are all tangled up into a community.
