yn needs a roommate, jisung needs cheaper rent. they’ve never met, but now they’re living together — split bills, fridge notes, and all. it's just supposed to be practical… but feelings don’t read contracts ꒰ᐢ. .ᐢ꒱.

“your cat’s been staring at me like i owe her money.” jisung said, taking a bite of his pizza.

yn giggled at that — a sound as sweet as honey to jisung’s ears. in all brutal honesty, it wasn’t often jisung made people laugh on purpose. usually, it happened by accident — through clumsy moments or questions so stupid you couldn’t help but laugh. so her actual amusement, her leaning in and laughing at something he meant to say, felt weirdly comforting.

“mm, yeah… she’s like that.” yn replied, laughter still lingering in her voice as she glanced over at her cat — currently perched on the windowsill, observing the new and unfamiliar stranger in her home.

jisung looked back at yn just in time to catch her blinking slowly, her eyes heavy with sleep. he noticed the way her head tilted just slightly, a soft haze settling in her gaze. she was clearly exhausted. he debated quickly finishing his dinner and heading to bed so she could do the same — but didn’t want to seem rude or like he was rushing to leave. so he stayed, awkwardly polishing off his slice in silence.

yn’s eyes fluttered back open, landing on jisung. “i assume you like cats then? … or can at least put up with them,” she asked, voice quiet and slightly slow.

“hm? oh, yeah! i grew up with cats,” jisung said, lips curling into a soft smile. “she’s fourteen now. still going strong.” he kept going from there, launching into a story about her. he didn’t realise how long he was talking until he glanced back over and saw yn — now fully slumped on the sofa, eyes closed, mouth slightly parted, breathing slow and even. asleep.

jisung froze, the realisation hitting all at once. he’d been talking to himself. he winced, brows twitching upward in quiet embarrassment, then stood to start clearing the table — moving as quietly as he could.

a few minutes later, he returned from the kitchen holding a blanket he’d grabbed from one of the unpacked boxes. carefully, he draped it over her, taking a second to smooth it out. he lingered for a beat too long, watching the way she curled slightly under the warmth.

then, deciding anything more would feel weird, he tiptoed back to his room and closed the door softly behind him.

in the few days that followed their first meeting, yn and jisung found themselves exchanging messages more often than not — a steady back-and-forth of flat-related questions that gradually melted into bits of personal conversation. neither of them said it aloud, but it was clear they were both trying to ease the awkwardness of living together. they were going to see each other almost every day, after all — might as well make the adjustment easier.

through texts, jisung had learned that yn worked full-time at a local bookstore and spent most of her off-days curled up with a manga or wandering aimlessly through the neighborhood with a playlist and no real destination. in turn, yn had discovered that jisung was a part-time barista at the café just down the road — the one with the string lights and far too many syrup options — and that he spent his free time volunteering at an animal shelter.

now, a few days later, jisung was hauling the last of his boxes into the flat. the sun filtering through the windows cast long shadows across the hardwood floor as he paused, exhaling slowly.

“sorry if this is taking a while,” he muttered, slightly breathless. “i didn’t realise how much stuff i'd hoarded until i had to carry it all myself.”

he adjusted his grip on the box in his arms — clearly heavy from the way the muscles in his forearms flexed. his sleeves were rolled up to his elbows again, a practical choice, but yn found herself struggling not to stare.

“no, seriously, don’t worry about it,” she said quickly, waving a hand as she leaned against the doorframe. “take your time. i mean— it’s not like ive been helping much anyway.”

her tone was light, but her smile was tinged with guilt. not that she hadn’t offered — multiple times, even — but every attempt had been met with jisung shaking his head, firm and polite. and on the rare occasion when he did hand her a box, it contained approximately the weight of three magazines and a pair of socks.

“you gave me a box of throw pillows earlier,” she added with a pointed look.

jisung just grinned, ducking his head as he carried the last load inside. “they were deceptively shaped,” he said. “could've been dangerous.”

2pm. yn heard a knock at the door — three simple, firm knocks. right on time. not a second early, not a second late. a roommate this punctual was something she’d only ever fantasized about after months of rent stress and mismatched schedules.

she closed her manga and set it carefully on the coffee table, smoothing the corner of the cushion she’d been curled into before pushing herself up. her heart was beating a little faster than she’d like to admit, a flicker of nerves slipping in as she neared the door.

she bit down on her lip, fingers curling around the handle. It wasn’t fear, exactly. just that strange, electric anticipation that comes with not knowing who’s standing on the other side.

“please be normal,” she muttered under her breath, turning the handle and letting the door creak open.

in front of her stood a man — a very beautiful man, at that.

tall, just shy of six feet, with long black hair that hung slightly over his eyes. and his eyes — big, dark, and a warm kind of deep brown — flicked anywhere but at her. he looked like he hadn’t quite figured out where to place himself, like he was carefully trying not to take up too much space. in his hands was a small gift bag, held with both hands like he wasn’t sure what to do with them.

when his gaze finally met hers, there was a flicker of surprise, maybe even a touch of awe. and then, just as quickly, the softest blush bloomed across his cheeks. he cleared his throat, bowed slightly — polite, a little stiff — and held the gift bag out to her like it was a peace offering.

“nice to meet you. im jisung.”

his voice was deeper than she expected. smooth, low, with this casual softness to it that threw her off guard entirely. it was enough to send a hot flush up the back of her neck.

there was something about the way he looked at her — not bold or flirtatious, but thoughtful. a little nervous. like he was taking her in piece by piece and trying not to make it obvious.

she could already hear jungwoo’s voice echoing in her head. no flirting. no weird over-sharing. and most importantly, no hooking up on the first meet. and yet, here she was, barely holding onto composure over one deep-voiced introduction and a gift bag.

she pulled in a breath to ground herself.

“thanks,” she said gently, taking the bag from his hands — his fingers brushing against hers, just briefly. his skin was warm.

stepping back, she nudged the door open a little wider. despite the heat rising in her face, she offered him a small, genuine smile — the kind she gave people she didn’t mind keeping around.

“come in.”
