Baby Blue Love // JJ Maybank *smut*
Tumblr media
I'm on fire but what can I do? I'm singing in the choir but I'm looking at you I'll be outside pick me up after school, baby blue Baby blue
A/N: This is the second instalment of a fit based on a Lana del Rey unreleased song. The first part can be found here.
All of these stories will be based in the OBX universe, however not all of them will feature the gold + cross storyline.
For the purpose of following the song themes, these stories might seem a bit unrealistic, exaggerated, slightly *or very* cheesy and might romanticise some questionable things that miss Lana likes to sing about ; you’ve been warned.
Masterlist here.
I take requests
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Zip it, Maybank,” you hissed through gritted teeth at the annoying blond you had the misfortune to be paired up with for the remainder of the semester in chemistry.
JJ Maybank, prior to today’s class, was just a face you’d seen around in most of your classes - one that would always crack dumb jokes in the middle of class, or make uncalled for sound effects whenever someone else was speaking - earning himself the reputation of the class clown. He was obnoxiously cocky, had half a brain in his head and tried hitting on nearly every girl in your grade, you included - always failing miserably. He was the epitome of what people meant when they said ‘never judge a book by its cover’ - although good-looking on the outside, once he opened his mouth he became unbearable. You had no idea how John B, who you thought to be a sweetheart, Kiara, who had her head screwed on straight, and Pope, who was arguably the smartest kid in your year, were all friends to him, but when Mr. Grubbs, your chemistry teacher, paired you with JJ Maybank for the whole semester, you decided that you might as well just give the boy the benefit of the doubt.
Sitting next to him however was making that extra hard, as he hadn’t stopped talking to you since the beginning of the period. At first it was just remarks such as, “Well look-y here, must be my lucky day,”, then it was shooting finger guns, then it transitioned into not-so-subtle pick up lines, and in the end you had just about had it with his shenanigans. Unfortunately, the time on the clock indicated that class was nowhere near to being over and you had to endure this agony for a while longer.
At one point you had just given up on listening to the teacher and you were picking on your already chipped red nails, biting the inside of your cheek, trying to zone JJ out as well. Just as it seemed to be working, you heard a “Pssst” coming from his mouth. You pretended to not hear it until he did it again, this time forcing you to turn around to face him.
“What?” you snapped.
“I just like annoying you,” he shrugged.
You rolled your eyes and sighed in exasperation just in time for the bell to ring. Tossing your notebook and your pens into your bag, you threw your leather jacket over your shoulder and went to speed out the classroom as quickly as you could. Unlucky for you though, JJ caught up with you just as you entered the hallway.
“So, uh,” he started, picking his snapback from his bag and adjusting it on his head now that they were out of the classroom, “how does 5pm sound?”
You raised an eyebrow, genuinely confused, “For what?”
JJ frowned, “Didn’t you hear what Grubbs said? We gotta start working on our midterm assignment as soon as possible, he’ll be checking in on us every class. Now I don’t know about you, but my old man’s gonna whoop me out of the house if I fail yet another class, so um… Will it be my place or yours?”
You stopped in your tracks, turning to face him fully, “Although I’m touched by your story and I would hate to see you homeless, I can’t today at 5,” you said, though when you saw the dramatic sad look that pooled in his eyes, you added, “I have choir practice until 7…”
JJ couldn’t hide his snort, making you frown and him quickly apologise, “Sorry, I uh - I just didn’t picture you to be in the choir,”
“What’s that supposed to mean?” You snapped, annoyed.
JJ shrugged, “I don’t know, I mean, the choir’s so lame and you’re so…” he paused, clearly checking you out, “Different,” was the word he chose to describe you.
“Gee, thanks, Casanova,” you rolled your eyes, “You can pick me up from choir practice at 7pm and we can go to mine. My parents are still at my grandparents’ house and they won’t be back until next week. We can start this midterm assignment since it means so much to you.”
JJ’s eyes light up as he pulls you in for a hug, “I’ll be there,”
With that, you walk away, utterly confused as to why JJ Maybank of all people, was suddenly so invested in school.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
At 10 to 7 the doors of the auditorium opened loudly, cutting your choir practice. Everyone was annoyed as turned to look at the intruder.
“Sorry,” breathed JJ as he quickly stepped over to one of the seats, trying his best to not make the whole scene even more awkward.
Normally this would’ve aggravated you beyond belief as you were tired and you’d been rehearsing the same two songs for the past two hours, however seeing JJ Maybank not only keep his promise, but also make it there early, actually made you form a small smile.
The chorister once again turned towards you and raised his arms, “Alright, one last time for today, from the top!”
And with that, you and your fellow choir members began singing your rendition of “I See a Star” by Greg Gilpin, and you made eye contact with JJ, smirking down at him, as he smiled back up at you.
When your practice was over, you quickly ran over to JJ and pulled him out of the auditorium.
“Whoa, whoa, slow down there, Princess,” JJ laughed, “What are we in a rush for? Homework’s not going anywhere,”
“The walk to my house isn’t a short one and I wanna stop by the shop on our way there,” you explained.
JJ laughed, “Who said anything about walking, sweet thing?” He reached into his pocket, dangling a pair of keys, “After me,” he urged and you followed.
Much to your surprise, JJ Maybank owned a 2004 Ford Thunderbird. You were adamant to believe it up until he pressed the key into the door lock and unlocked the car, winking at you and motioning his head for you to get in. You slowly slid into the passenger seat, hugging your bag in your lap as you put your seatbelt on. JJ lit the ignition and slowly took off. When you reached the first red light, he shuffled through his door’s messy compartment and pulled out a pack of Marlboro Lights, picking one out with his teeth and offering the box to you. You reluctantly pulled one out and went into your bag to pick a lighter, lighting JJ’s cigarette for him first. He nodded in appreciation as the light changed from orange to green and he sped off into the streets of Kildare. You couldn’t help but observe him as he drove while you smoked your cigarette, the way the golden sunset was illuminating his light features, the way his biceps slightly tensed as he held onto the steering wheel and the way he lightly bobbed his head to the beat of some techno song playing on the radio that you didn’t recognise. At this exact moment, JJ Maybank looked like an absolute dream, and not like the annoying dork you’d been paired up with for chemistry.
“Enjoying the view?” He smirked. You felt your cheeks heat up. “She’s a real beauty, right?” He patted the dashboard of his car, and you audibly sighed relief that he was talking about the vehicle and not himself.
“Yeah, she is,” you agreed honestly.
“Been saving up for her since I was 10,” he said proudly, “I was supposed to repaint her in red, but I hadn’t saved enough and now I’m stuck with this girly shade of -“
“Baby blue,” you observed and finished his sentence for him, “I like it,”
JJ looked at you and smiled, “Thanks, sweet thing,” he said, pulling into the parking lot of the local 7-Eleven, “So what are we getting from here?” He questioned once you entered the store.
“Just some alcohol,” you shrugged, walking over to the counter in utmost confidence. JJ started after you, a smirk appearing on his face. He watched as you pulled out a plastic card, no doubt a fake ID, and passed it over to the cashier, who looked at the card, then at you, then proceeded to checkout the bottle of whiskey and coke you had placed on the counter.
“That was awesome,” JJ said as you walked back to his car.
“You haven’t even seen the half of me, Maybank,” you teased, entering the vehicle.
“Looking forward to it,” he bit his lip as he followed you into the car.
Somehow, this became a tradition to you and JJ. For him to pick you up after choir practice, for you to pick up alcohol and cigarettes from the 7-Eleven on the way to your house, for you both to hum or full-on sing along to random songs playing on JJ’s car’s old stereo, and then for drunkenly doing your chemistry assignment. You were never going to admit it, but as time progressed, you started shamelessly developing feelings for the boy, however you were unsure of his feelings towards you. Sure, he flirted with you, but that was a typical trait of JJ’s behaviour around everyone, so assuming he was into you purely based off of his flirting approaches was pointless. You sighed during choir practice one Friday afternoon, about three weeks into your newly developed habit with JJ. He arrived, of course, into the auditorium and took his regular seat at the back, his eyes never leaving yours as he gave you a wink, making you blush. Once you finished rehearsal, bought your traditional bottle of whiskey and took a seat on your fuzzy carpet around the living room coffee table with your notebooks spread out, you felt a tightness in your stomach that you couldn’t quite figure out.
JJ was biting the top of his pen, trying to decipher a formula you had just studied in class and you couldn’t help but stare. This attraction you had developed towards him was so sudden and so out of the blue, it almost caught you off guard. You started noticing little things about him - the way he would chew the inside of his cheek when he was nervous, or tap his steering wheel when he was impatiently waiting at the traffic light to go green, or the way his eyes lit up when he came to your choir practices and saw you (or at least you were hoping that they did). JJ Maybank had grown on you so much in the past three weeks that you were questioning how on Earth you ever dared to question liking him in the first place.
“Sheesh, princess,” he suddenly said, catching you off-guard, “Stare any longer and you’ll burn a hole in my face,”
You quickly straightened up, cheeks burning, “I was… I was just about to go grab some juice from the kitchen and was wondering if you’d like some too?” You lied.
JJ smirked, “Yeah, go ahead,”
You mentally slapped yourself as you walked towards the kitchen, stopping in front of the kitchen counter, resting your hands on it. Great, you thought, we don’t even have any juice. Just as you were about to turn towards the fridge, you felt a pair of hands push you back onto the counter. JJ’s breath was on your neck as his lips were by your ear. You caught your breath as your eyes shut.
“What’s the matter, princess?” He whispered, “Do I make you nervous?”
You forcefully turned around to face him, your eyes mirroring the darkness in his. You couldn’t believe that this was happening, but you decided to play it out, just in case this was a daydream. It was now or never and you didn’t want to live the rest of the semester thinking of what ifs, so you lifted yourself on your tiptoes and planted your lips on his. It caught him off guard at first, but within seconds he was sliding his hands under your legs and pushing you onto the counter, his kiss becoming hungry.
“You can’t imagine how long I’ve been waiting for this,” he breathed once he pulled away.
“Yeah?” You teased, biting your lip.
He just groaned in response as he smashed his lips on yours.
The kiss was hot and passionate, neither of you wanted it to end. You were pulling the hair at the nape of his neck and he was squeezing your hips, both of you moaning into each other’s mouths.
Pretty soon your clothes started coming off, the room just felt so hot, you couldn’t take a breath properly and the only thing that made sense were your lips on JJ’s. It was so unexpected, but it felt so right. You didn’t, for a second, stop to think about what this would mean for your work together at school, or how this would affect your newfound friendship. All that you cared about now was leaving dark marks on JJ’s tan neck, and drowning in the sound of his moans.
You slid off the counter and kissed down his torso and towards his very prominent erection. You squeezed it and JJ hissed, involuntarily thrusting his hips forward, into your hand. You smirked at the action, licking your lips before taking all of him into your mouth. JJ moaned loudly, pushing his dick into your mouth. This went on for a few seconds before he suddenly pulled out and lifted you back onto the counter. Your lips were swollen and your eyes confused as you looked at him through your long black lashes.
“I’m not gonna last long if you keep doing that, princess,” he said, lining himself up with your entrance, “Can I?”
You nodded eagerly, nearly crying out when he slid in, filling you up in the most glorious way imaginable. He pressed his forehead against yours, his breath hot on your face. You were in a trans. This was the best feeling you had ever felt in your whole life and you couldn’t believe it was JJ Maybank who was making you feel this way. His overgrown blonde hair was a mess, making him look like a young Axl Rose. His movements were sloppy and hot and your body was on fire. Who knew that class clown JJ was capable of this? Was he really this good, or were you just totally in love with him?
“I’m gonna cum,” he breathed, burying his face in the crook of your neck.
You nodded frantically, feeling your own high approaching. In mere seconds, both of you came undone, JJ’s body involuntarily twisting and turning above you before finally collapsing in your arms, his lips on you ear.
“God, I love you,” he mumbled.
Your eyes shot open. Did he really?

Part 8 –
49 days of summer camp left
Caroline sat in her bed, hugging her knees against her chest. Her and JJ had the afternoon off and despite his attempts to lure her into hanging out, and her infatuation with the boy, she’d turned him down, wanting to spend a few hours alone with herself to compose her thoughts. It had been exactly two weeks since the night Madison disappeared. No one had bothered to mess with the campers since then, the bonfire area hadn’t been touched and no dead animals were found in anyone’s suitcase. To the rest of the camp, this seemed like victory; to Caroline – it seemed like the calm before the storm.
During their first day at Camp Willowdale, all of the counselors had been given a Willowdale-branded set of items they’d have to use during their stay. It came with the obvious STAFF t-shirts, sweaters and hats, but it also consisted of other things – such as the thermoses Caroline and JJ were still using to sneak whiskey into their daily routines, and notebooks in which they were advised to plan out their group’s daily schedules. Caroline however had been using her notebook for other purposes. She’d become so obsessed with Madison’s case, that every little thing that happened on camp grounds and seemed even a little out of the ordinary, immediately became a clue to her, which she’d hastily scribble down in her notebook. It had only been two weeks since the disappearance of Madison Hague and Caroline had already filled about a quarter of the pages of her hefty notebook with potential clues and leads. She kept rereading her notes, trying to think of something – anything – that they could do to help them solve the mystery, however nothing was coming to her. Ever since the dress incident, Caroline and her friends hadn’t found anything else that could relate to Madison, though Caroline was glad that none of them had given up on their mission.
Caroline was so deep in her own thoughts, she nearly jumped at the sound of a sudden knock on the door. She quickly closed her notebook and tucked it under her mattress and went to open the door, revealing a panting JJ leaning on the doorframe.
“Hey, C,” he breathed.
“JJ, what’re you doing here? I told you I -”
JJ cut her off by pushing past her and walking into her cabin, “Yeah, yeah, you wanna be alone, I know,” he sat on her bed, taking his snapback off, “but I was thinking… you’ve been so busy with the kids and with the whole Madison thing, and believe me – I really appreciate you for being like that, but -”
Caroline crossed her arms, “Where are you going with this?”
JJ sighed, “You’ve just totally forgotten how to have fun, C,” he said, “The primary reason that we all came here was to have fun and look at you – you barely eat, or sleep, or do anything other than your counselor duties and this whole Madison investigation thing…” JJ sighed again, looking at the hat in his lap and playing with its adjustable strap, “All I’m saying, C, is what if Madison really did go home and you’ve just wasted all this energy on nothing…Thing is,” JJ looked up into her eyes, “I miss you, the old you, and I know that that you’s still somewhere in there, it’s just this whole Madison thing blocking it.” he placed the hat back on his head and stood up, walking towards Caroline, “Hang out with me now,” he said, stopping directly in front of her and lifting her chin up so that she was facing him, “And I promise we’ll think about Madison later,”
Caroline couldn’t really process what was going on. JJ was touching her and standing in such an intimate distance from her, that she could basically feel his breath on her face. For a second she forgot all about Madison, and the dead owl, and the bonfire area. All she could think about was JJ Maybank, who had just told her that he misses her and wants to “hang out with her”. Caroline stood there, lost in thought. What if he was right? What if Madison really did go home and that dress never even belonged to her? What if it was Jenna Kinley’s all along and Sarah had just gotten the perfume wrong? What if JJ really did miss her because he liked her as more than a friend? No, no, that couldn’t be it. But what if –
“Um, Carrie?” JJ’s voice suddenly broke her out of her trans, “So d’you wanna do something together or -”
“Yes!” she said, a little too excitedly for her own taste, of course I’d like to hang out with you, JJ, she thought, “What do you want to do?”
JJ’s face immediately lit up at her words, “Well I was thinking perhaps a picnic?”
Caroline raised an eyebrow, “Don’t picnics require food? We don’t have access to anything unless it’s mealtime,”
“Yeah, but we do have whiskey,” JJ winked with a mischievous look on his face, walking towards the storage room of the girls’ cabin where they still had a few bottles of alcohol left.
Caroline rolled her eyes but smiled nonetheless – this was going to finally be her first date with JJ Maybank. Well, sort of.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The afternoon sun was low in the sky, casting a beautiful orange reflection onto the peaceful water of lake Willowdale. Caroline and JJ had taken a seat on the lakefront, drinking their whiskeys and admiring the sunset, reminiscing the days when they were kids again.
“D’you remember that one summer when Rafe Cameron got food poisoning and ended up barfing on stage at the Will-all-hail banquet?” JJ laughed at the memory.
Caroline frowned, thinking about it, “Beats having Rafe Cameron as your counselor by a mile,”
JJ turned to look at her, eyebrows raised, “Rafe was a counselor here?” his tone almost sounding amused.
Caroline nodded, “Oh yeah,” she smirked, “For the same reason as Sarah – too stuck up for his own good so their dad shipped him over here as a punishment,”
JJ snorted, “I mean that family is pretty far up their own ass,”
“They have a sister too,” said Caroline, “I haven’t seen her around here though, so we at least know that one of them must be doing something right,”
The pair laughed at the thought of their spoiled friend and her older brother.
“Man, I missed this place,” said JJ suddenly, leaning back on his elbows.
His tone sounded different as he looked at the horizon and Caroline could sense that something wasn’t right, “Yeah, I’ve been meaning to ask -”
“Parents got divorced,” JJ quickly explained, “And unfortunately for me, my dad got custody,” he sighed, “Somehow my mom was deemed ‘incapable’ of taking care of me because she couldn’t financially afford to. Load of bullshit, if you ask me,”
“But my mom -”
“Yeah, they still talk,” said JJ, knowing what Caroline was about to say, “I still see my mom every other weekend, you know, it’s not the end of the world,” he smiled at Caroline reassuringly, “It’s just living with my old man meant working for my cut at home, which also meant summer jobs back in Kildare,”
“So that’s where you’ve been all this time…” whispered Caroline, mostly to herself, however JJ heard her.
“Yeah,” he responded, “Now that I’m old enough to be a counselor here and actually get paid for coming to summer camp I thought why not? Besides, your mom did tip mine off that you’d be here too,” he winked at Caroline, making her blush.
“Yeah, about that,” she said apologetically, “My mom likes to yap a lot, I wouldn’t take most of what she says seriously,”
“Well you are here, aren’t you?” said JJ, his face slightly leaning in towards Caroline’s.
Holy shit, this was it. Caroline was about to kiss JJ Maybank after a decade of fawning over him. Shit, shit, shit, she hadn’t really kissed anyone since that idiot from her class planted one on her at prom. What if she was a bad kisser? What if she’d forgotten how to kiss? As JJ closed his eyes and leaned even closer, Caroline decided to push the doubtful thoughts to the side as she closed her eyes too, leaning in towards him too. Their faces were inches apart, hearts pounding in their chests and, just as their lips were finally about to meet –
“There you are!” Sarah’s loud voice came from the hill behind them, startling them and making them both jump and immediately pull apart and straighten up. John B stumbled after her.
Caroline coughed awkwardly, trying to cover up the shame and embarrassment she was currently feeling, “Sarah… what are you doing here?”
With a knowing smirk on her face, Sarah put both hands on her hips, “Nothing,” she sing-sang, obviously finding the whole situation hilarious, “I’m sure it can wait,” she winked down at Caroline, while John B was waving around frantically behind Sarah at JJ, mouthing the words “DID YOU BONE?!” quite obviously.
JJ groaned as he stood up, helping Caroline up as well, “We’re all yours now, Sarah, what’s up?”
“Well me and John B had the afternoon free as well, so we went out front to his van and you’ll never believe what was taped to the door,”
“Wait, why’d you go to his van in the first place?”
Sarah rolled her eyes, “That’s beside the point now, Carrie, look” she shoved a piece of paper in the girl’s hands.
As Caroline unfolded the paper, the group gathered around her to look at what was written on it - 41° 56’ 54.3732” N, 87° 39’ 19.2024” W.
“I have no idea what that means though,” confessed Sarah.
“Looks like coordinates to me,” said JJ.
“Hey, that’s what I said!” gasped John B, “But Sarah didn’t want to believe me,”
“Does anyone know how to read geographical coordinates?” JJ looked at his friends.
“Do I look like Google Maps to you?” asked Sarah.
“You’re right,” Caroline said as an idea sparked in her mind, “We can’t read coordinates, but I know someone who can,”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~`
“I’m just saying, Miss P,” JJ spoke confidently once the group was inside Pricilla’s office, “Now’s about the best time to host the traditional yearly treasure hunt,”
Pricilla squinted up at JJ through her pink glasses from where she was sat at her desk, “Keep talking, Maybank,”
“Don’t you think it’s a bit odd that it’s already been two weeks and none of these kids can read a compass yet?” continued JJ, earning a slow nod from the camp director, “Think about it, Miss P – Willowdale ain’t Willowdale without its treasure hunt,”
As JJ spoke, the rest of the group were silently praying behind him that his charismatic way with manipulating will work on Pricilla, giving them an excuse to ask her to decipher the mysterious coordinates they had gotten their hands onto. The old lady leaned back in her old leather chair and looked at JJ skeptically for a while, adding to the already built up tension.
“Give me a few days to map out the course and set up the coordinates,” she finally spoke, causing everyone in the group to silently cheer behind JJ. As they thanked her and turned to leave, she spoke up again, “Oh, and Maybank,” she called, everyone turning to look at her, “No funny business,”

Part 7 –
53 of summer camp left
“So what you’re trying to tell me,” croaked Pricilla, lighting a cigarette and taking a long dramatic drag, “Is that you snuck your campers on the boats and went to the stilt house, which is strictly forbidden by the way, and did what again?”
“We found Madison’s dress, Miss P,” explained Caroline, her hair still damp.
Her and Sarah had hurried to get dressed and ran to Pricilla’s office as quickly as their feet could take them. The smell of the dress was lingering around them, the tacky perfume so in their face that the girls were sure that it had been sprayed on it that same day.
Pricilla rolled her eyes at them, not impressed at all, “You see, all I see is a couple of rule-breaking bimbos putting their noses in places that are prohibited and dragging my campers along,” she took yet another drag of her cigarette, “I hate to do this girls, but I’m going to have to deduct points from both of your teams for this,”
Caroline’s eyes grew so big, they could’ve popped out of her head, “Are you being serious? We literally found solid evidence that Madison could be somewhere around here and all you can think about is… deducting points?!”
Pricilla tutted, “Oh, Carrie, when will you ever learn the importance of the Will-all-hail banquet? It’s been a decade and you’re still questioning the graveness of my scoring system,”
“Screw the scoring system!” Caroline raised her voice in the heat of the moment, “What about Madison?”
Pricilla rolled her eyes, “How’d you even know it’s hers anyway? Could be anyone’s, hell, it could even be mine for all I know,”
Sarah spoke up this time, “It’s the perfume, Miss P,” she explained, “I’d recognize that smell anywhere. It’s the old money smell, Madison used to wear it all the time, even when we were kids, it’s part of the reason I despise her so much, I couldn’t stand that smell,”
Pricilla looked at Sarah as if she’d fallen from the ceiling, “So you’re telling me that I have to believe that you,” she pointed at Caroline, “willingly snuck your group onto that barely standing stilt house to do God knows what and found this drape, and you,” she pointed at Sarah this time, making her slightly jump, “can guarantee that this belonged to a girl who disappeared 10 days ago because you recognize the smell?”
“We know it sounds crazy, Miss P, but if you’ll -” Caroline began talking, but Pricilla cut her off.
“I’ll pretend I didn’t hear about you and Maybank’s escapade to the lake house and you’ll pretend you didn’t find this dress, okay?”
“But -”
“No buts, missy, do you know what this can cost me?”
As Pricilla and Caroline began arguing, Sarah took a seat in one of the futon chairs in the camp director’s office and had a look around. If she’d ever questioned why everyone believed Pricilla to be a hotheaded pothead or mild alcoholic, now she knew – the office looked like a hippie hoarder’s wonderland. There was plants, incents, accessories and dust everywhere, she was pretty sure half the vases of the plants were actually bongs, which she thought John B and JJ would greatly enjoy - if she’d learned anything about John B and JJ in their past 10 days of working together, it would have to be their love for all things marijuana. Behind Pricilla’s desk, under the light of the sole window in the entire wooden room, stood a large bookcase, except there was hardly any books on it. The shelves were littered with odd little porcelain figures of smiling animals, dusty half-empty bottles of alcohol and picture frames of people Sarah didn’t recognize at all. One person was a recurring character in most of the photos, it was a girl who looked to be not much older than Sarah herself. She had long mousy brown hair and wore funky accessories in most of the pictures. Sarah guessed her to be Pricilla’s infamous estranged daughter. She sort of resembled her mother, thought Sarah, what with the quirky accessories and beady eyes. Sarah squinted to examine the jewelry the girl in the photos was wearing, a recurring theme being what looked like a firefly brooch. Sarah scoffed at the horrid choice of accessory and turned back around to look at Caroline who was still arguing with Pricilla.
“You can’t just let this happen,” she pleaded, “What if she’s out there and she needs our help? What if this is her leaving us a clue!”
“Zip it, Windsor!” snapped Pricilla, “I’ve just about had it with your shenanigans!”
Sarah decided that this whole argument was pointless and stood up, interjecting, “You know what, Miss P? You’re totally right! We shouldn’t have been lurking and we will totally learn from our mistakes,” she grabbed Caroline and pulled her towards the door, giving her a stern look, as if to tell her to not protest, “Thank you for not deducting points from our groups, we’ll be sure to not mention this to anyone! You have a good day now, Miss P!” with that, she led Caroline outside and slammed the door.
“What’d you do that for?” Caroline snapped.
“Even a blind person could see that that was a dead end, Carrie,” Sarah explained, leading Caroline back to their cabin, “I can’t believe that I’m going to say this, but I think your boyfriend was right,” before Caroline could correct her about how JJ was not her boyfriend, she spoke again, “Madison’s somewhere out there and if we don’t take matters into our own hands, one of us could also get in trouble,”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Zip it, Maybank,” you hissed through gritted teeth at the annoying blond you had the misfortune to be paired up with for the remainder of the semester in chemistry.
JJ Maybank, prior to today’s class, was just a face you’d seen around in most of your classes - one that would always crack dumb jokes in the middle of class, or make uncalled for sound effects whenever someone else was speaking - earning himself the reputation of the class clown. He was obnoxiously cocky, had half a brain in his head and tried hitting on nearly every girl in your grade, you included - always failing miserably. He was the epitome of what people meant when they said ‘never judge a book by its cover’ - although good-looking on the outside, once he opened his mouth he became unbearable. You had no idea how John B, who you thought to be a sweetheart, Kiara, who had her head screwed on straight, and Pope, who was arguably the smartest kid in your year, were all friends to him, but when Mr. Grubbs, your chemistry teacher, paired you with JJ Maybank for the whole semester, you decided that you might as well just give the boy the benefit of the doubt.
Sitting next to him however was making that extra hard, as he hadn’t stopped talking to you since the beginning of the period. At first it was just remarks such as, “Well look-y here, must be my lucky day,”, then it was shooting finger guns, then it transitioned into not-so-subtle pick up lines, and in the end you had just about had it with his shenanigans. Unfortunately, the time on the clock indicated that class was nowhere near to being over and you had to endure this agony for a while longer.
At one point you had just given up on listening to the teacher and you were picking on your already chipped red nails, biting the inside of your cheek, trying to zone JJ out as well. Just as it seemed to be working, you heard a “Pssst” coming from his mouth. You pretended to not hear it until he did it again, this time forcing you to turn around to face him.
“What?” you snapped.
“I just like annoying you,” he shrugged.
You rolled your eyes and sighed in exasperation just in time for the bell to ring. Tossing your notebook and your pens into your bag, you threw your leather jacket over your shoulder and went to speed out the classroom as quickly as you could. Unlucky for you though, JJ caught up with you just as you entered the hallway.
“So, uh,” he started, picking his snapback from his bag and adjusting it on his head now that they were out of the classroom, “how does 5pm sound?”
You raised an eyebrow, genuinely confused, “For what?”
JJ frowned, “Didn’t you hear what Grubbs said? We gotta start working on our midterm assignment as soon as possible, he’ll be checking in on us every class. Now I don’t know about you, but my old man’s gonna whoop me out of the house if I fail yet another class, so um… Will it be my place or yours?”
You stopped in your tracks, turning to face him fully, “Although I’m touched by your story and I would hate to see you homeless, I can’t today at 5,” you said, though when you saw the dramatic sad look that pooled in his eyes, you added, “I have choir practice until 7…”
JJ couldn’t hide his snort, making you frown and him quickly apologise, “Sorry, I uh - I just didn’t picture you to be in the choir,”
“What’s that supposed to mean?” You snapped, annoyed.
JJ shrugged, “I don’t know, I mean, the choir’s so lame and you’re so…” he paused, clearly checking you out, “Different,” was the word he chose to describe you.
“Gee, thanks, Casanova,” you rolled your eyes, “You can pick me up from choir practice at 7pm and we can go to mine. My parents are still at my grandparents’ house and they won’t be back until next week. We can start this midterm assignment since it means so much to you.”
JJ’s eyes light up as he pulls you in for a hug, “I’ll be there,”
With that, you walk away, utterly confused as to why JJ Maybank of all people, was suddenly so invested in school.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Part 6 -
49 days of camp left
“The thing I don’t understand is,” said JJ, taking a sip of his coffee several days later at breakfast, “How is everyone so chill about all of this?”
“Yeah, everyone except for us,” said Caroline.
“And Topper,” mumbled Sarah.
Her three friends all looked up at her, eyes wide.
“What?” she looked back at them, eyes equally as wide in confusion, “Why’d you think he’s been moping around camp, face looking like a slapped ass?”
“Sarah, why didn’t you say anything at the campfire?” Caroline asked angrily.
“Um, I did,” defended Sarah.
“Um, no you didn’t,” clapped back JJ, getting visibly annoyed.
John B nodded and mumbled quietly, “They’re right, you didn’t…”
“Not now, John B,” snapped Sarah at him, turning towards her other friends, “What do you mean I didn’t?”
“When we asked you about what Topper said, you literally said ‘oh nothing of importance, he doesn’t care about the bitch either’ and then you went back to glaring at those girls goggling at John B,” said JJ.
Sarah scoffed, “I was only glaring because they refuse to listen to me and only do whatever he says,”
“That’s beside the point, Sarah,” sighed JJ, “If you weren’t too busy doing that, perhaps you’d have mentioned that Topper doesn’t buy the whole boyfriend story either, which could mean that we’ve got an ally amongst all of these lunatics!”
“Sorry,” Sarah shrugged, “I guess I just got distracted,”
Caroline shook her head sighing, “Anyway, it’s almost 9,” she looked at JJ, “What’s on our schedule for today?”
“Funny you ask,” JJ responded, “We’ve actually got swimming until 11, which means the kids have swimming until 11 and we can just chill by the lake,” he wiggled his eyebrows, “If you know what I mean,”
In the days since camp began, the whole Madison thing had died down and since there was no new occurrences and, well, no new leads, Caroline and JJ decided to put their primary focus on their teens. They’d made a small rule that every time their schedule indicated that they’ve got an activity where their physical participation is not directly required, Caroline would sneak some whiskey in their thermoses and they would quietly drink it in secret, just to spice up their day.
So far Caroline was doing a pretty good job at hiding her crush on JJ, which was somehow becoming bigger by the day. For some reason everything that JJ did was attractive. Whether it was him running, or teaching the boys how to tie a noose, or eating (pretty messily) his food, or not to mention swimming practice when he was required to get naked – Caroline could just stare at him all day. She was somewhat happy about their newfound tradition of taking over some of their daily tasks while tipsy because the alcohol was somewhat helping her seem more confident and less shy.
Caroline tied her long brunette hair in a Dutch braid and smeared the tiniest bit of mascara on her lashes, just to seem effortlessly pretty, of course. She adjusted the straps of her swimsuit and grabbed her and JJ’s prefilled thermoses before heading out to meet the boy and their group in front of the camper’s cabin.
“There she is,” said JJ, unable to hide his excitement, “We ready to go?”
The campers all agreed and they made their way down towards the lake, where Caroline and JJ sat at one of the benches while their campers hurried into the water.
“Now, now, Teens 2,” said JJ after them, not too bothered about sounding strict, “Usually our timetable says swimming, but since we’re all grown ups here, we can all do whatever we want, as long as we don’t go too far away from me and Carrie’s eyesight, alright?”
Everyone agreed and JJ sat back down next to Caroline, who handed him his thermos.
“I’ve gotta give it to you, Maybank,” she said, taking a sip of the spicy liquor in her flask, “You’ve got a way with kids,”
JJ smiled down at her, taking a sip too, “I mean they’re hardly kids, C,” he said, “Besides, I try my best, I wouldn’t want to embarrass myself in front of you,”
That blush that Caroline was all too familiar with crept back onto her cheeks, “In front of me?” she repeated, surprised.
“Yeah,” nodded JJ as if it was the most obvious thing in the world, “I don’t see any other pretty girls around here,”
Caroline looked in the opposite direction, too shy to look at JJ, as she took another rather large sip of her drink, “JJ…”
“What? Can’t a guy give you a compliment?” he smirked, “Hey, come on now, we’re in this together, besides… your mom did say -”
Just as Caroline was about to turn towards JJ with a panicked look in her eyes, fearing what exactly her mom had said to him, two of their campers began screaming their names, diverting both of their attentions.
“Carrie! JJ! You’ve gotta come see this!”
JJ shot up, helping Caroline up as well, as they ran towards the dock. Bobby and Eli, the two campers who had called out for them, were hastily swimming back to shore.
“What is it?” Caroline asked, worry filling up her nerves.
“We found something dope!” said Eli, reaching the dock, “But we can’t reach it without you guys’ help,”
“What did you find?” asked JJ.
“That,” Bobby pointed in the direction they’d just swam from. There, a good distance away, in the middle of the body of water, stood an abandoned-looking stilt house.
“The old lake house,” JJ and Caroline said in unison.
“That’s just an old building, it’s been there forever and there’s literally nothing in it,” explained JJ, his nerves calming down after the initial jump scare, “Trust me, we’ve looked,”
Bobby rolled his eyes, “Oh, come on, you can’t be serious,” he moaned, “That place looks wicked!”
“Yeah, if you watch a lot of horror movies,” said Caroline, “JJ’s right, there’s nothing in there. I’ve been numerous times, it looks way cooler in your imagination, believe me. Reality is underwhelming,”
Eli crossed his arms, “If it’s so underwhelming why don’t you wanna take us there?”
JJ sighed, “Eli, taking you there would require taking the boats, which we’re not allowed to do unless it’s on our schedule, which it’s not, and if we take you there, we’d have to take everyone there, and -”
“Take everyone where?” came Jennie, another one of their campers’, voice suddenly.
“Yeah, JJ,” more campers gathered around the dock, “Where are you taking us?”
JJ and Caroline sighed in defeat as they shared a defeated look, making Bobby and Eli high five in victory.
“Change of plans, kids,” said JJ finally, giving in, “Swimming’s cancelled, looks like we’re going to be learning how to row today,”
_________________________________________________________
“You sure about this?” JJ grabbed Caroline’s hand as she was stepping off the boat and onto the back deck of the abandoned stilt house.
Caroline turned towards him and gave him a reassuring smile, “It’ll be just like the old days,” she said, her tone sounding promising.
JJ followed her onto the deck and they helped their campers tie their little boats on the deck’s cleats.
“Looks like y’all were really paying attention during our noose tying workshop,” JJ said proudly as he double-checked that all the boats were securely tied, “I’m gonna make sure to bring that up to Miss P and we might have a shot of winning at the Will-all-hail banquet,”
Caroline snorted at the name, “So tacky…”
“Come on guys, follow me and Carrie and watch your steps,” JJ signaled, catching everyone’s attention, “This place is crazy old so be careful! One wrong step and you may end up in the water,”
Carefully, the group entered the old creaky building. It was all too familiar to Caroline and JJ, the smell of mold and condensation hitting their nostrils as the single dusty dark room they had secretly lurked into numerous times as kids presented itself in front of them. Part of Caroline had always secretly wished for the old lake house to serve as a passageway to a parallel universe, or to hold some great big secret, or even to be inhabited by the not-so-friendly ghost of whoever built it back in the day, however unsurprisingly, nothing seemed out of the ordinary yet again. The room was empty, other than the numerous spider webs which decorated almost every corner and crease.
“There you go,” Caroline said, turning to leave, “Nothing to see here,”
JJ agreed, “As always, underwhelming and empty,”
“If it’s so empty,” spoke one of the campers, “then what’s that?” the teenager pointed in the direction of where there was once a door leading towards the front deck.
Everyone’s heads turned in that direction and sure enough, on one of the old nails sticking out of the door frame, was hung a piece of red fabric, barely noticeable from the inside, let alone from where the shore to camp was.
“Stand back,” said Caroline, slowly stepping forward towards the fabric. She peeped her head through the door hole cautiously, checking if there was anyone on the front deck, holding her breath as she did so. She breathed out in relief once she saw that the coast was clear and analyzed the fabric, “Hey, J, can you come over?”
JJ, half-impressed, half-paralyzed, snapped back to reality as he walked over to the girl who now looked so brave in his eyes, mentally slapping himself for not being a man and volunteering to go instead of her.
“Why does this look familiar?” Caroline said once JJ came over to piece of clothing. It turned out to be a dress.
JJ shrugged, pulling at the material and taking a sniff, “Whoever’s it is was here recently,” he said, “Smell of perfume is fresh,” he sniffed again, “And super strong,” he scrunched his nose, a look of disgust on his face.
Caroline took a sniff too, “Yeah, that smell is so familiar, but where from…” she sniffed again, closing her eyes in an attempt to figure out where she recognized the scent from.
“Probably one of the girls from your cabin,” concluded JJ, “I’d put my money on Jenna Kinley, she seems like the type to sneak around,”
Caroline smirked, “Sounds about right, she was probably up here sneaking around with Barry, I hear her talking about him all the time,” she unhooked the dress from the nail, “I’ll bring it back to her, she must think she’s lost it,”
JJ nodded and they led the campers out of the stilt house and onto shore again. Caroline tucked the dress in her bag along with her thermos and waited until after everyone’s daily activities were over to meet Sarah by the showers and tell her about her and JJ’s scandalous little discovery. Ever since they’d arrived at Camp Willowdale and had their phones taken away for the rest of the summer, the only source of news and gossip was whatever was happening around camp, and since it wasn’t all that much, every little bit of spice counted.
“So how was archery?” she asked Sarah as she folded her underwear and turned the water in her shower on.
Sarah followed in after her, not bothering on going into a neighboring shower stall. They had developed his habit of showering together about three days into camp, with Sarah seemingly having separation anxiety and insisting that “they’ve both got the same bits and pieces” and that how “any guy would be lucky to be in the position Caroline is in,”.
The blonde groaned as she squeezed some of her purple shampoo in her palm, foaming it up and working it into her hair, “Horrible,” she said, “How do you see me with a bow and arrows?”
“Do you really want me to answer that question?” teased Caroline, mirroring Sarah’s actions and washing her hair.
“Whatever, C,” Sarah rolled her eyes, “How was your swim date with your boyfriend?”
“Okay, first of all, he’s not my boyfriend,” said Caroline earning a smug look from Sarah, “And second, you’ll never guess what we found,”
“Oooh, is it the incessant lust you have for each other?” teased Sarah.
“No, it’s better,” said Caroline, ignoring her friend’s words, “We went to the old lake house and we may or may not have found what we believe to be Jenna’s dress just hanging there,” Sarah’s eyes widened at her words, “Yeah, we assume she’s sneaking around with Barry, how fucking scandalous is that?”
“Shut up!” gasped Sarah.
Caroline nodded excitedly, “Right? She’s been yapping about him nonstop and we just put two and two together,”
“Who’d have thought… little miss perfect and Barry,” scoffed Sarah, “D’you have the dress? It’ll be so embarrassing once you give it back to her, I can picture her face already,”
“You bet I do, it’s in my bag,” said Caroline, “Must’ve done the deed recently, it still reeks of her,” she scrunched her nose at the thought of the horrible smell.
Sarah raised an eyebrow, “What’re you pulling that face for? Does she smell that bad?”
Caroline shook her head, “It’s her perfume,” she explained, “Smells like what I imagine Miss P’s underwear drawer smelling like,”
Sarah scoffed, “Now you’ve got me intrigued,” she quickly rinsed her hair and body off, hurrying for her towel, “Where’d you say this dress was?”
Caroline nodded her head in the direction of her bag, “Somewhere in my bag,” she said, “But I’m being serious – you’ve been warned,”
As she continued rinsing her hair, Sarah dove her hand into Caroline’s bag, searching for the dress in question. When she finally felt it in her hand, she pulled the piece of clothing out pressing it against her nose to take a sniff. Her eyes widened in horror as realization consumed her.
“Carrie…” she mumbled not loud enough for her friend to look up, “Carrie, this isn’t Jenna’s dress,” she spoke louder.
This time, Caroline looked up at Sarah with a look of confusion in her eyes.
“The perfume you’re talking about,” said Sarah, “It’s Guerlain Shalimar, I’d recognize it anywhere,”
“Your point being…?”
“This perfume doesn’t belong to Jenna,” Sarah turned to look at Caroline, her eyes still wide in horror, “It’s Madison’s,”

Genre will primarily be comedy and romance, mixed in with a good old sprinkle of murder mystery and suspense. Hope you enjoy ;)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Part 1:
"I really don't want to do this," Caroline sighed, annoyed at her mother, "And the fact that you're making me do this really proves you know nothing about me."
Her mother rolled her eyes, "I think if anything, it mostly proves that you don't know yourself," she said, folding the last bits of Caroline's luggage, "This used to be your favorite place to go, besides, JJ’s gonna be there." her mother smirked, looking up at Caroline's now widened eyes.
"JJ Maybank?" Caroline turned to face her mother.
Her mother nodded, "JJ Maybank."
If she could, Caroline would've dug herself a hole in the ground right there and then. JJ Maybank used to be a regular at camp Willowdale, just like her, up until a few years ago when he stopped attending. She used to, for the lack of a better word, be obsessed with him. Her and her camp friends would go around the boys' cabins to spy on the boys every evening before dinner, and to say she had an innocent crush on him would be an understatement. What didn't help at all was the fact that over the course of the ten years she'd attended the camp, her mother had become good friends with JJ’s and they would often speak on the phone, all conversations where Caroline was sure her mother would bring her up in.
"I spoke to Joy," her mother spoke, making Caroline immediately stiffen, "Told her about the cute little crush you used to have on JJ back in the day and I think that was reason enough for him to turn down his father's offer to help out at the car dealership for the summer, and apply for a position at camp Willowdale."
If looks could kill, Caroline's mother would have gone right there and then.
"You didn't." said Caroline through gritted teeth.
Her mother smiled mischievously and walked out of her room.
Great, summer hadn't even started and Caroline was already wishing for it to be over...
~~~~~
Willowdale Lake was a pretty epic place. Endless woods, a beautiful meadow, and a large lake with crystal clear water was at the disposal of the camp that was established there. Caroline took the scenery in, nostalgia filling her senses. She had basically grown up in this place, only having missed it for the past two years because of her last two years of high school when she focused more on doing school work and activities that got her into college. For ten summers in a row she was a camper here, experiencing a lot of things for the first time in this very location.
She learned how to ride a horse, how to swim, how to tie a noose, how to rock climb, she even had her first kiss at camp Willowdale. It was in Cabin 13 and the lucky fella's name was Pope Heyward. They both had braces at the time and the kiss only happened because Kiara Carrera dared Caroline to do it, but Caroline smiled at the memory.
This year was going to be different. It was her first summer attending the camp not as a camper, but as a counsellor. It was her last summer before heading off to college and to be honest, the idea was entirely her mother's. Caroline deemed the summer camp chapter of her teen self's life closed for good as she was entering the world of adulthood. The last thing she anticipated was for the mother to reopen that chapter for another summer, especially against her will.
See, Caroline's mother was a persistent lady. She didn't take no for an answer and she loved meddling in her daughter's affairs. When Caroline was a teenager, it was her mother who signed her up for dance lessons and advanced math. Caroline never once showed any interest in the two subjects, however her mother made the decision for her, regardless of both Caroline and her father's objections. And here Caroline was, facing another decision her mother had made for her when she secretly applied her name in the register for camp counsellors.
Caroline would not have been this annoyed had her mother not opened her abnormally large mouth to Joy Maybank about Caroline's not-so-innocent crush on her son. How could her mother even think of saying that? JJ Maybank hadn't even attended the camp the last three years Caroline was there. For all Caroline knew, he could have gotten a girlfriend, or an STD or something, anything, over the course of these three years. All she knew was that she wasn't looking forward to sharing responsibilities with him this summer.
Thankfully for Caroline, her mother let her drive herself to Lake Willowdale so she didn't have to worry about getting further humiliated in front of her fellow camp counsellors. They were called in a day before the kids were meant to arrive in order to set everything up for their arrival. The first official night of camp usually involved a big feast, followed by a scavenger hunt and a bonfire. Caroline couldn't help but feel excited about it, even though she would be on the other end of the activities this year.
Camp Willowdale usually hosted about 60 kids every summer, organized into 6 groups of ten, formed according to ages of the campers. Each group would have two designated counsellors, one male and one female, that would be in charge of their individual activities. For the big events such as camp fires, scavenger hunts and game nights, all the groups would get together and interact in between them. This year's counsellors would get sorted into pairs during lunch and would then go ahead and prepare the schedules and activity plans for their group in the remainder of the day.
After Caroline unpacked in the female counsellor cabin, she made her way towards the Wildcat Lodge, which was the main cabin where all of the staff and campers would gather to eat, or in this case - get sorted into their groups.
The Wildcat Lodge was filled with both familiar and unfamiliar to Caroline faces. Most of this years counsellors were people she could recognize from previous years as counsellors and some as campers-now-counsellors. The first face she immediately recognized was that of Sarah Cameron. Caroline knew Sarah very well as they were both the same age and they would both usually got put into the same group in their years as campers. Even as a preteen Sarah was what you could call a spoiled brat, a Primadonna girl, if you will. She always used to moan during any activities that required physical work, and she used to pride herself in owning the biggest collection of Barbie dolls as a child. She was also the first girl out of their group to show interest in makeup and she used to charge the other campers for using her lip glosses and eyeliners before she got caught by the counsellors and had her makeup kit confiscated for the summer. Caroline sighed at the realization that she would have to share a cabin with Sarah yet again. The girl seemed to notice Caroline as well as she started waving at her to join her at the table. Caroline sighed once again as she made her way towards her.
"Carrie! What a delightful surprise!" Sarah chimed as Caroline took a seat across from her at the table, "Who would've thought that even as adults we'd be stuck together!"
Caroline chuckled at her remark, "Good to see you haven't changed one bit, Sarah,"
Sarah smirked at her reply, "I only change for the better, Carrie, and when I'm already the best, there's hardly any room for improvement."
Caroline held back a laugh. Sarah really hadn't changed at all. She still had the same juvenile mean girl attitude she used to have and the only thing that seemed different about her were her makeup skills, which appeared to have gotten better over the past two years.
"So how come you're here and not at some fancy resort this summer?" Caroline asked.
"I'm going to Milan in the fall, you see, I'm doing a fashion degree. I told myself - Sarah, since you're going to be entering a new life of European luxury and class, you might as well do the world a favor and attend camp Willowdale one last time."
Caroline scoffed, "Your parents made you do this, didn't they?"
Sarah sighed loudly, "My dad, mostly," she explained honestly, "He said it's for my own good. Thinks I've gotten way too full of myself and that this would be a great way to humble me before going to Italy. You see, for some reason he believes that Europeans are grounded and that in order to fit in, I have to ground myself as well. I disagree, of course. Nothing in the world can make me believe that anyone from Milan would be caught dead in this hell pit." she looked around the lodge with a look of disgust on her face, "What about you, Carrie? What brings you here?"
Caroline appreciated Sarah's honesty so she decided to be honest with her as well, "My mom signed me up without my consent. I'm going to college as well in the fall and she thought that it would be a wonderful idea to ship me off back to summer camp before I go off. To be honest, I think it's because she refuses to accept that I'm growing up. Do you know how devastated she was when she told me that people my age can no longer attend as campers and that she had to put my name in for a counsellor position instead?"
Sarah snickered at her words, "Looks like we're in for one hell of a summer," she said sarcastically, "But hey, at least we've got each other."
Caroline nodded and looked around the lodge. It didn't take long for her to spot the one person that she was hoping to avoid this summer. JJ Maybank. And boy, was he going to be hard to avoid. He had grown nearly a foot since the last time that she saw him, his body was leaner and more muscular, and his hair had gotten longer, replacing the usual near-buzzcut he used to sport as a kid. He was talking to some of the other male counsellors, one of which she recognized as John B Routledge, who used to be another camper back in the days, always grouped up with JJ. JJ was talking animatedly, his smile spread across his handsome face, his blue eyes twinkling with excitement. Caroline was doomed. If she had a crush on him as a child, hiding her attraction towards him as an adult was going to be nearly impossible.
"Alright, girls and boys, pipe down!" came a voice from the podium of the lodge. It belonged to Pricilla Woods, who had been the camp director ever since Caroline could remember. She was a peculiar, slightly eccentric old lady, with long white hair and a quirky style; many believe her to be a pothead. She continued, "It's so good to see you all! To those who've been here before, welcome back, to those who are here for the first time - I hope you will enjoy it. As you all know, camp Willowdale is the highlight of the year for its campers. It's better than Christmas and birthdays combined! So getting to be a part of this excitement and helping kids make the most of their summer, means you get to make the most of your summer! Now, as you all know, each of you will be assigned a group to look after for the next 9 weeks and you will be put into pairs. Miss Darbyshire, one of our lunch ladies, was kind enough to volunteer writing all of your names down on a piece of paper and putting them into a box. Boys, I hope you don't mind being gentlemen and letting the ladies draw your names out. Ladies, one by one you will draw a piece of paper from the box. Whoever's name is on the paper, that's who you'll be paired up with for the summer. Boys, you will be in charge of drawing the group you'll be taking care of. Alright, now that that's been said, ladies, make your picks!"
Sarah, staying true to her nature, insisted she go first. Caroline knew that she would be hoping to get paired with Topper Thornton, who also happened to be there this summer, and who Sarah used to be obsessed with as a kid. By the look of disgust on Sarah's face when she saw the name she drew out though, Caroline concluded that things didn't go to her plan.
"John B Routledge," she read out, not hiding the disappointment in her voice.
John B smirked at the sound of his name as Sarah made her way back to the girls' table and the next girl went to draw.
"If I didn't know any better, I'd say you were pissed," Caroline smirked at Sarah's depressed expression.
"Pissed is an understatement," Sarah muttered, "Eurgh, as if I got paired with Routledge. He used to eat bugs as a kid."
Caroline laughed at her comment. They looked at the boys' table where John B was wiggling his eyebrows at Sarah. Sarah turned around to face Caroline again and faked a gag.
"Kill me, now," she said, sinking into her seat.
One by one, all of the girls drew out a name until there was one left and Pricilla made her way towards the box on the podium again.
"One name left, which means whoever's it is must automatically pair up with the last remaining girl, which happens to be Caroline Windsor, and the name that hasn't been drawn out yet is-"
"It's me, Pricilla," JJ’s voice echoed through the lodge, "Looks like I'm going to be paired with Caroline."

Part 5 -
53 days of camp left
The first day at Camp Willowdale was usually pretty straightforward – campers arrive, sign in, move into their designated cabins where they meet their counselors, then all gather in the Wildcat Lodge to get their schedules, maps, badges and compasses. Ever since Pricilla’s daughter left her, she ditched the idea of having a stable with horses at camp (saying it reminded her way too much of Wendy, and also cost a lot of money to maintain), and settled for scavenger hunts in full scout mode in the forest, hence the compasses and badges. Every camper was given a first badge for participation and would get the chance to earn new badges to add to their collection during their nine week stay. Pricilla made sure that there was a badge for literally everything – from successfully starting a fire to throwing out the trash. She liked to do this to make all the campers feel included and special, which on its own sounded like a wonderful thing, however her actual motives were selfish – happy kids meant happy parents, and happy parents meant money. She also liked to turn everything into a competition, so she established a scoring system that nobody but her understood, where she’d award or deduct points from different groups and the group with the most points at the end of the summer will be crowned conquerors of the camp at a made up end-of-summer event Pricilla named the “Camp Will-all-hail banquet”. Caroline always found the name to be extremely tacky, but much like mostly everything that Pricilla put her finger onto, it wasn’t surprising.
JJ and Caroline had gotten assigned to Teens 2. Unsurprisingly, everyone in their group was almost their age, which seemed like somewhat of a recipe for disaster, as Caroline feared that this could result in the teens refusing to follow orders from someone who is basically their age. She was pleasantly surprised to find out that their group of teens was actually quite well-mannered and well-behaved. John B and Sarah’s teens, however, were a whole different story.
“You sure you got T2 and not T1?” panted Sarah after finally sitting down at the counselors table beside Caroline for dinner.
Caroline smirked, “Positive,” she confirmed, not being able to hide her amusement at the sight of an already tired Sarah, “Why’d you ask?”
“Oh, no reason,” said Sarah sarcastically, “Well, besides all the girls, and I’m pretty sure one of the boys, having a massive thing for John B, and them all quite literally being the spawns of Satan, hm… no reason,”
Caroline laughed at Sarah’s words, looking over at the table where her group and Sarah’s were seated at. Two of the T1 girls were giggling while telling a story, while everyone else’s attention was on them. Caroline came to the conclusion that they would be the It Girls at this year’s camp, bossing everyone around. She couldn’t help but laugh at the irony that it was Sarah who got these two as they were literally mini versions of her.
“Heard my name being called,” John B slid onto the bench across the table from the girls. Now that everyone had been sorted, the Wildcat Lodge seating area had been rearranged so that the groups would be sat together according to their ages, and the counselors would be sat together according to their groups. The head staff had their own table at the very foot of the podium, right next to where the food was, conveniently.
JJ was quick to join their group at their respective table, “What’d I miss?”
“Oh, nothing,” Caroline said nonchalantly, “Just Sarah being jealous over her girls liking John B, no biggie,” Sarah kicked her under the table, earning an, “Ow!”
John B’s eyes immediately shot up, that familiar twinkle of excitement swimming through his honey orbs, “Jealous?”
“As if,” barked Sarah, squinting her eyes at him threateningly.
“We’ll see about that, baby cakes,” John B winked, diving into his dinner.
“So,” said JJ, lowering his voice in case any of the neighboring tables were listening, “What’s the plan, guys?”
Caroline shook her head, “I don’t even know where we could start, I mean, the only clue we’ve got so far is that message we had to scrub off the rock this morning before the campers arrived…”
John B thought for a second, “Hey, wasn’t Topper paired up with her?” he said suddenly.
Caroline’s eyes widened in realization, “John B, you’re a genius!” she said, earning a proud smile from the boy, “Last night at the counting, Topper said something about feeling guilty for not offering her his jacket!” the four of them turned to look towards Topper’s table. He was sitting quietly, barely poking at his food, while the rest of his fellow counselors were having an animated conversation around him. Caroline turned back towards her friends, “Chances are he was the one who saw her last!”
“Yeah, and judging by the look of his face, he doesn’t seem too excited about it,” remarked JJ.
“Can you blame him? I’d be pissed if I was paired with Madison, too,” muttered Sarah, scrunching her nose at the leafy salad in her plate.
“Tonight at the bonfire,” said Caroline, “Sarah’s going to offer him some help with his girls, seeing as he’s dealing with all of his kids alone,”
“Hey, why me?” Sarah frowned at the plan.
“Because you’re the one who had a massive crush on him back in the day,” Caroline whispered in Sarah’s ear, resulting in Sarah kicking her under the table again. Caroline bit back a groan as she smiled forcefully, looking at the two boys in front of her, “Okay, well, sounds like we’ve got a plan.”
-------------------------------------------------
After handing out the songbooks and marshmallows to all of their teens, Caroline, JJ, Sarah and John B took a seat at their designated log next to their groups, which had somehow bonded during dinner and were all laughing together.
“Alright, settle down kids!” Pricilla said, causing everyone’s chatter to die down, “As you have already been informed, it is a Willowdale tradition to perform our very own rendition of Bomfiara every morning and night until the end of camp. The songbooks you’ve been kindly given by your counselors contain the lyrics to all of the camp songs we’re going to be singing this summer, but I’m sure that by the end of it you won’t be needing the books anymore,” Pricilla fake-laughed at her own joke while everyone just started at her blankly, “Okay, well, let’s sing!” she gave the tone and everyone started signing.
“This is so lame,” said one of the girls Caroline proclaimed as “It Girls” earlier that evening, “We’re too old for this BS,”
“You got that right,” mumbled Sarah.
“Oh, come on, I love it, it used to be our favorite tradition!” whined John B.
The two girls squealed and started pinching each other, immediately opening their songbooks and joining in on the singing, making intense eye contact with John B with their best seductive looks. Sarah rolled her eyes at the scene.
“See?” she whispered to Caroline, “This is what I meant!”
Caroline smirked at the blonde girl, “Am I sensing… jealousy?”
Sarah scoffed at the remark, “Pf, yeah right,” she said defensively, “I’m just annoyed that they’re only listening to what he’s saying and we’re supposed to be counselors together.”
Caroline nodded slowly, pretending to be buying the story, “Yeah, sure,” she turned to look at Topper, who regardless of the fact that he was surrounded by his group and fellow counselors, still seemed down, the camp fire illuminating his distant face, “Speaking of together, when do you wanna go talk to Topper?”
Sarah followed Caroline’s gaze towards the boy, “Once this stupid song is over,”
Caroline nodded and both girls turned towards their group again, where the It Girls were still making sexy eyes at John B, who seemed totally clueless to their approach as he was belting the lyrics of the much familiar song out loud, waving JJ’s hands every so often.
Once the song was over and everyone got back to their regular chitchat, Sarah stood up and straightened her shorts and camp sweatshirt as she made her way towards Topper.
“Hey, Top, this seat taken?” she said, referring to the empty spot on the log next to him where Madison was supposed to be sat.
Topper looked at Sarah as if she’d just said a distasteful joke, “Hey, Sarah…” he muttered, “Obviously not,”
“Awesome!” Sarah smiled widely, plopping down next to the boy.
“So,” Topper started awkwardly, “What brings you here?”
“Saw you from across the pit,” she explained directly, “Couldn’t help but notice that you seem lonely,”
“Yeah, well,” Topper looked at her with a look of disapproval once again, “I sort of am,”
Sarah pretended to only just realize what he was talking about, “Riiight… So, about that,” she chirped again, “Last night you said something about a jacket?”
Topper sighed, “Yeah, Madison said she was cold when we were in our cabin and instead of offering her my jacket, I sort of felt… relieved that she was going to leave me for a second to go grab hers. I should’ve known that something was wrong when she was gone for over 10 minutes, instead I just laughed around with Kelce and the boys and then we heard the scream…”
Sarah rolled her eyes, “Oh, please, you’re not blaming yourself for it, are you?”
“I mean, I kinda am,” Topper confessed, “If I wasn’t too caught up in being annoyed that I’d been paired up with her, I’d have just given her my jacket or followed her to your cabin to get hers and none of this would’ve happened,”
Sarah tried putting on her best apologetic smile as she reached for Topper’s hand, taking him by surprise, “Look, Top, I hate Madison just as much as the next person, but I hardly think any of this was your fault. She probably just used the jacket as an excuse to ditch and got excited to see her rookie boyfriend, hence the scream,”
Topper frowned, “Don’t tell me you actually believe all that?”
Sarah shrugged, “I mean, she was a drama queen,”
Topper pulled his hands away from Sarah’s, shaking his head, “Just go, Sarah,”
Sarah looked over towards her friends across the fire pit who were all staring at her in anticipation, as she shrugged her shoulders and mouthed them a, “Sorry, I tried,” making her way back to where they were seated.

Part 4 -
“What do you mean close down the camp and call the police?” said Pricilla, almost sounding shocked, “And risk getting closed for business? Are you crazy?”
“Don’t you find it even slightly suspicious that in the same night the bonfire area gets trashed twice, a dead animal gets found in a counselor’s bag and a counselor goes missing?” said Caroline, obviously unnerved.
Pricilla, however, seemed more unnerved by the group’s presence.
“Listen, kid,” she said, “That Hague girl was no good anyway, always prancing around like she owned the place,”
“You got that right,” muttered Sarah.
“She probably snuck out to meet her boyfriend and saw a rat on the way and that’s why she screamed,” Pricilla shrugged.
“Then what about her still missing?” Caroline questioned.
“Boyfriend probably took her home.” Pricilla said nonchalantly.
“Then what about the bonfire area and the message?” Caroline asked again.
“Boyfriend was probably a tool and thought it’d be funny to pull a stunt on all of us,” the old lady mumbled, “How am I supposed to know? You ask way too many questions too, kid, you sure you’re not Maybank in a wig?”
JJ snorted at the comment while Caroline simply shook her head, “We’re supposed to be expecting children tomorrow, doesn’t any of this sound even a little sketchy to you?”
“Yes, we are,” Pricilla nodded, pulling a cigarette and lighter out of her padded bra and lighting it directly inside the Wildcat Lodge, “And none of you kids will be getting in the way of that.”
“But the bonfire area is totally ruined,” John B joined in on the conversation.
“Well then I’d be heading off to bed if I were you,” Pricilla simply said, taking a long drag of her cigarette, “Wouldn’t want to wake up not in time to sort it out again tomorrow, would you?”
The four teens sighed and left the Wildcat Lodge. Somehow they had been the last group to return to the main area and all of their other fellow counselors had given up on looking for Madison a while ago, all believing the story of how she bailed on camp with her boyfriend.
“Somehow I’m not buying any of this,” said Caroline when they reached the girls’ cabin.
“As much as I’m going to enjoy not having Hague around, I’m gonna have to agree with Carrie on this one,” Sarah said.
JJ and John B agreed too, “None of this makes sense. How is nobody phased by Madison just disappearing?” JJ said.
“It’s because it’s Madison,” muttered Sarah, “she’s a witch,”
Caroline rolled her eyes, “It’s because Pricilla’s too afraid of going out of business and she’s willing to sell and believe any story just so she can keep this place running,”
John B nodded, “Yeah, if anyone’s a witch around here, it’s her,”
“As much as I used to love this place as a kid, ever since Pricilla’s daughter bailed on her she’s become totally bananas and she’s let this place slip majorly,” said JJ.
Everyone agreed once again.
“However, I don’t believe that Madison’s imaginary psycho boyfriend did all of this, regardless how much Pricilla tries to sell that to us,” JJ continued, “And with kids coming in tomorrow and the rest of us still basically being kids ourselves, this could be dangerous, and I say if nobody else wants to take this seriously, we take it in our own hands. Who’s with me?” JJ said, placing his hand in the middle of the circle they had subconsciously formed, expecting the others’ hands to land on it.
Caroline nearly tripped on her still drunken feet after hearing JJ speak so bravely. Her hand immediately shot into the circle and on top of his, almost on command, and if she wasn’t still under the influence of the quarter bottle of whiskey she had downed not too long ago, she’d have been extremely embarrassed at how fast she agreed with the boy. He looked down at their hands then up at her and winked. If she was questioning whether she was still crushing on JJ earlier, now she was sure.
John B’s hand was the one that followed almost equally as fast. Whatever JJ did – so did John B and vice versa, it was a little unspoken rule they’d set back in the day when they were still kids. The only person who still seemed adamant was Sarah, who stood there, arms crossed against her chest, an annoyed frown littering her forehead.
“What?” she snapped when they all turned to look at her, “You want me to take care of a bunch of kids with John B and look for my arch nemesis? Y’all must be tripping.”
“Come on, Sarah, it’s not about Madison,” pleaded Caroline, “Imagine if it were to happen to you, wouldn’t you want someone to come looking for you?”
Sarah bit the inside of her cheek, processing what Caroline was saying to her. She finally rolled her eyes and gave in, slapping her hand on top of the others’, “Ugh, fine, I’ll be part of whatever this is.”
“Yes!” said JJ excitedly, “This means that we can now be sort of like the Scooby gang.”
“I call dibs on Scooby!” said John B, making everyone snort at his comment, “What?” he said defensively, “There wouldn’t be a Scooby gang without a Scooby,”
Caroline shook her head, still smirking at the odd pair of boys her and Sarah had somehow had the chance to be paired up with, “Well the Scooby and the Scooby gang wouldn’t be able to do anything without at least trying to get some rest, so I suggest we head to bed. I doubt that whoever did this will try doing something again tonight. Besides, you heard Pricilla, we’ve gotta set the bonfire area early tomorrow, again.”
Sarah groaned loudly, “Ugh, don’t remind me, let’s go,” she said, stomping up to the door of their cabin and entering the triangular wooden building.
John B also turned to walk towards the boys’ cabin, leaving JJ and Caroline behind.
“So uh,” JJ said, smiling at the girl, “Thanks for agreeing to this, C,”
“Of course,” Caroline said, again too quickly for her liking, “It would suck if something bad did happen to Madison and no one did anything about it,”
“Nah, I was talking about you being partners with me,” JJ said, “Madison might’ve actually ditched for all we know,”
Caroline’s cheeks were on fire again and she was hoping that the yellow lights guiding the pathways towards all the camp’s buildings weren’t allowing JJ to see that.
“Well, I’ll see you tomorrow then,” JJ said when Caroline took too long to say anything.
She quickly nodded, “Yeah, I’m looking forward,”
“Yeah, me too,” JJ winked at her and walked away towards his cabin, her entering hers with literal hearts in her eyes.
Missing or not, Madison’s disappearance and the rollercoaster that was their first day had somehow ensured that this summer was in fact going to be one to look forward to.

Music was blasting in the boys’ cabin and John B made sure to keep the lights dimmed to a maximum, adding to what he referred to as ‘the groovy ambiance’. Caroline and Sarah entered the cabin, leading the way for all of their fellow girl counselors. Word spread faster than a wildfire around the Wildcat Lodge and now everyone was attending what was meant to be a welcoming party for just the boys. Caroline leaned against the ladder of one of the bunk beds and crossed her arms as her and Sarah waited in anticipation for their grand scheme to play out.
“Caroline, Sarah!” John B’s voice alerted them as he snuck up between them, hooking an arm around both their shoulders, “Right on time for the big surprise!” he said, walking dramatically towards what the girls already knew to be his luggage. He turned the music down on his way there, “Alright everybody, listen up!” he said, stopping by his bed, gathering everyone’s attention, “I’m sure to most of us, if not all of us – camp Willowdale is a token of light, a beacon of faith, an ode to nostalgia, if you will,” he spoke dramatically, waving his hands around, making Caroline and Sarah chuckle, “Which is why we have all gathered here tonight, and for that reason, I have done my due diligence and prepared a special surprise for all of us. Girls and boys, allow me to introduce to you,” his hands went to unzip the bag, “Ton-” his eyes widened in horror as he unzipped the bag, revealing it to be totally empty, except for his scarce clothes and the limp body of what appeared to be a dead owl at the bottom.
Everyone around him seemed either disappointed or confused as he frantically ran around the room, looking for his alcohol stash. Caroline and Sarah, however, gasped at the sight before them.
“Shit,” muttered Sarah, “What the hell is that? When I said I was hoping there wouldn’t be animals in there I didn’t think there’d actually be animals in there…”
Caroline shook her head, “Screw what it is! The real question is – who put it there?”
The girls were so focused on their conversation they barely noticed JJ showing up, “You girls know anything about this?” he said, making both of them jump.
“JJ!” Caroline said, trying to mask all sense of worry in her voice, “How could we possibly know anything about this?”
“We did it,” said Sarah quickly, “We stole the alcohol, but we swear to God we have no idea who put that pigeon in there!”
“Sarah!” hissed Caroline, only making Sarah shrug.
“What?” the girl said, “If there’s some psycho playing tricks on us, we might as well have a guy on our side!”
JJ raised an eyebrow, a small smile spreading on his face, “You’re telling me you two are behind this?”, he said, looking at Caroline impressed, “Gee, Carrie, didn’t picture you to be the bad type,”
Caroline’s cheeks heated up immediately as Sarah rolled her eyes and turned to look at JJ, “Earth to Maybank, are you listening to me? We only stole the booze, we didn’t put that in there!”
“Relax, girls,” said JJ, “Knowing John B, that little fucker probably sat dead at the bottom of his bag for a while before you even got to the alcohol,”
Caroline and Sarah both scrunched their noses in disgust, however what JJ was saying did make sense.
“You’re probably right,” sighed Caroline, “Booze is in our storage room, me and Sarah will go fetch it now,” she said, pulling Sarah out of the cabin.
“Are you crazy?” Sarah hissed at her, “Do you really want to give them all that alcohol back? Jesus, Carrie, how the hell do you expect me to last all summer sober? It’s bad enough I have to bunk with Madison Hague…”
“Relax, Sarah, I’m sure there’s gonna be a handful of teenagers with secret stashes of alcohol just waiting to be confiscated,”
Sarah sighed in relief, “You’re totally right, C,” she said, shaking her head as they walked the few steps up to their cabin’s door, “We’re just gonna rob our teens! What could possibly go wrong?”
As she said that and pressed onto the door handle, an ear-piercing scream echoed through the forest, making the hairs on the back of her arm stand.
“What was that?!” she quickly turned to Caroline, who was just as frozen as she was. Counselors started coming out of the boys’ cabin, the music dying down again suddenly. JJ and John B quickly made their way towards the girls, both visibly concerned.
“Are you alright?” said JJ.
Caroline nodded, crossing her arms, “I am, but whoever’s in there doesn’t sound like they are,” she said, tilting her head in the direction of the thick forest from where the scream came.
By this point, Pricilla and the rest of the head staff appeared from the staff lodge, all looking slightly tipsy as they paced through the path to the counselors’ cabins.
“What in the world is going on here?” Pricilla said, trying not to slur her words.
“Sounds like we should be asking you the same thing,” John B muttered under his breath, earning a chuckle from JJ.
“Our guess is as good as yours, Miss P,” explained Topper, shrugging, “We were all hanging out in there when we heard the scream and came out,”
“Well whose was it?” enquired Pricilla, looking slightly annoyed that her night had to be cut short for these teenagers’ shenanigans. When no one could give her an answer, she rolled her eyes and waved them over, “Come on then, off to Wildcat Lodge. We’re gonna have to do a count,”
Once everyone was gathered in the lodge, Pricilla waited for Mrs. Darbyshire, who also seemed a bit too drunk to be taking any of this seriously, to bring her a list of all the counselors’ names.
“Alright,” she said once the list was in her hands, “I’m gonna do a name call. Once we figure out who’s missing, you’re gonna go into that forest and look for them.” This earned her a bunch of annoyed comments and groans, making Pricilla snap back, “Don’t give me that shit, you lost ‘em, now you gotta find ‘em.”
“This is bullshit,” Caroline crossed her arms, “We’re literally minors, what are they gonna do?”
“They’re gonna finish their party,” interjected JJ.
Caroline shook her head in annoyance as Pricilla started reading out everyone’s names one by one.
“Jenna Kinley?”
“Here!”
“Kelce Johnson?”
“Here.”
“Barry Smith?”
“S’up.”
“Madison Hague?”
No answer.
This made Pricilla stand up straighter, looking around the pool of counselors in front of her, “Madison are you here?” when there was no reply yet again, she sighed loudly, “Has anyone seen Madison?”
“Last time I saw her, she said she was going to the girls’ cabin to pick up a jacket,” chimed in Topper.
“Oh, for the love of-” Pricilla groaned loudly, “This better not be a stupid prank, or I swear!”
“I should’ve just given her one of my jackets…” muttered Topper, “Now I feel kinda guilty,”
“Hey, it’s alright,” said Caroline, tapping him on the shoulder, “I’m sure she only saw a bug or something,”
“I trust you’ll all disperse and look for your friend now,” said Pricilla, “In the meantime, us adults will be supervising the Wildcat Lodge,”
“Supervising from what?” asked JJ confused.
“In case… Madison comes back here, of course!” Pricilla quickly lied, “Now off you go, Maybank, you ask way too many questions!”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“This is ridiculous,” moaned Sarah after bouncing down the stairs of the girls’ cabin with a bag on her arm, “As if this summer couldn’t get any worse,”
“Pipe it, princess,” bit back JJ, “If you didn’t insist on stopping by the cabin before we went into the woods, maybe we’d have called it a night by now.”
“Don’t big yourself too much, Maybank,” she said, leading their pack into the trees and looking around to see whether the coast was clear, “You see, while you were moping around outside, I picked up some provisions,” she said, a devilish smirk spreading on her face as she pulled out a bottle of whiskey from her bag.
Caroline’s jaw nearly broke off, “Sarah, are you serious?”
Sarah only shrugged, “What? I told you I’m not gonna make it through tonight sober, besides, if I’m gonna be looking for the bitch I was hoping wouldn’t be here in the first place, I’d rather be shit-faced when I find her,”
Caroline rolled her eyes, snatching the bottle from Sarah’s hands, “Yeah, well, if I’m going to be looking for the bitch with you, I’d rather be shit-faced too,” she said, taking a rather large swig of the alcohol and hissing at the taste.
“Sweet,” said JJ, picking the bottle up from Caroline, “This is better than the party,”
John B agreed as he got hold of the bottle last.
The group walked through the forest, flashlights in hand, taking the whiskey bottle in turns and laughing as they went. John B had argued that if Sarah could pick something from her cabin, then he could pick his speaker from his, and so the four of them found themselves nearing the clearance by the lake, drunk and singing along to some cheesy song that was currently playing loud enough for only them to hear.
“It’s a good thing Pricilla wanted us here a day early,” slurred John B slightly, “Now you girls have set up the bonfire area and we can chill there,”
Sarah rolled her eyes, “Yeah, you’d know all about that, wouldn’t you?”
John B raised an eyebrow and turned to Caroline, “What’s she talking about?”
Just as Caroline was about to answer, they reached the bonfire area, which much to her dismay – had been totally wrecked, once again.
“This,” she said, anger quickly replacing the previous buzz she was feeling from the alcohol.
“Whoa, who did this?” said JJ, flashing his flashlight in the direction of the discarded logs and pillows.
“What do you mean who did this?” snapped Sarah, “Why’d you think we stole your alcohol?”
“Sarah, we didn’t do this,” John B shook his head.
Sarah stopped dead in her tracks, her face becoming slightly worried “What do you mean you didn’t do this? Then who did?”
“Guys,” Caroline chimed in from across the bonfire area, where the fire was supposed to be lit the following night, “Come check this out,”
The three teens made their way towards Caroline who was flashing her light at one of the rocks at the base of the fire pit. There was something written on it with a gooey substance the origin of which none of them wanted to question.
“I don’t know who did it, but whoever it was,” said Caroline, stepping back from the rock so that her friends could see what was written more clearly on it, “Probably did this, too.”
And there on the rock, written with what looked an awfully lot like blood, were plastered four words:
Come and find me
Part 2 -
Lunch was over and Pricilla organised the boys to go set up the objects for tomorrow night's scavenger hunt around the camp grounds. The boys had drawn the groups their pairs would be in charge of before leaving and JJ and Caroline had gotten Teens 2, whereas Sarah and John B had gotten Teens 1, which meant that, for better or worse, their groups would be partaking in a lot of activities together, seeing as they were both in the same age group.
The girls were given the job to set up the seating area where the bonfire was going to be, so Sarah and Caroline stuck together as they made their way towards the clearance where it was going to be held.
"Can you believe I got paired up with JJ Maybank?" Caroline sighed.
"Beats Routledge by a thousand, I can promise you that," said Sarah, still extremely disappointed, "At least Maybank looks like he takes care of himself."
Caroline chuckled at her comment. John B had also grown his hair out over the years and it was now down to his shoulders.
"He does seem like he is... in touch with nature," Caroline remarked and Sarah laughed genuinely for the first time since drawing the boy’s name out, "Maybe they won't be that bad to work with, besides, it's only nine weeks, what could go wrong?"
Sarah seemed to think for a second before her lips curled into a devious smirk, "Hey, didn't you used to have, like, the biggest crush on Maybank?"
Caroline's cheeks turned red immediately, "I don't know what you're talking about," she mumbled quickly.
Sarah started laughing, "You totally did! You lucky, lucky bitch! I wish I got paired up with my childhood crush! Instead I get to spend my last summer before moving away with snot-nosed, bug-eating Routledge... Why was the Universe on your side and not on mine?"
They walked behind the rest of the girl counsellors towards the bonfire area. When they arrived, the logs that Pricilla had informed them would be stacked up in a convenient for them to move around way, were all scattered across the ground. The pillows that were meant to go on top of them were also in disarray. All the girls looked around in confusion.
"Surely this couldn't have been the wind?" one of them said.
"Surely this was the boys." said Sarah matter-of-factly, "I'd bet 50 bucks that Routledge had something to do with this."
All the girls turned to look at her in confusion.
"What?" she protested, shrugging her shoulders, "You know I'm right."
Caroline rolled her eyes, "Boys or not, we better sort this mess out before sundown, we have cabins to set up as well."
The girls agreed, Sarah being skeptical but also finally giving in, and little by little, they set up the bonfire area. It took them a little over two hours before they started making their way back to the cabins, which they were supposed to decorate with welcome signs for the arriving campers.
Since Sarah and Caroline were both in charge of the oldest groups, their campers were meant to be sharing two cabins - one for the boys and one for the girls.
"Let's split up, I'll do the boys and you do the girls," Sarah offered, nearly shocking Caroline, "Try being as quick as you can. Meet me back out here in 15 minutes tops." she ordered before scurrying up the steps into the boys’ cabin.
Caroline rushed into the cabin next door, pleasantly surprised by Sarah's sudden determination to get work done. As she was arranging the banners and posters on the walls and ceiling, she couldn't help but think that Sarah must have had some sort of ulterior motive to being this enthusiastic about working. Sure enough, she was right.
She had barely taken a step out of the girls' cabin when Sarah spoke up, "Took you long enough. Now let's go find those stupid guys."
The sun was setting and the woods had gotten a bit chilly as Sarah lead Caroline towards where the male counsellors were supposed to be. After setting up the scavenger hunt objects, they were supposed to set up the archery area. As they were getting closer to the archery grounds, the two girls could hear the laughter of the boys in the nearby distance. Sarah pretended to gag yet again.
"Quick, around here," Caroline pulled Sarah behind the small hut where they kept all of the camp's archery supplies. From their spot they could see the guys quite clearly and could hear everything they were saying, "Remind me again why we're doing this?" Caroline whisper-yelled at Sarah.
"Because I'm still furious about their little prank," Sarah explained, "Which is why I want to prank them back."
"How are we gonna do that exactly?" asked Caroline, "By eavesdropping?"
"A good villain is one that knows the enemy's weaknesses," said Sarah, "First we listen for a bit, and then we make a plan."
Caroline couldn't help but smirk at this new side of Sarah she was seeing. She much preferred this Sarah to the constantly whining, gloating Sarah she had gotten used to over the years. Plus, being somewhat of a daredevil herself, Caroline couldn't help but find the idea of pranking the boys back exciting.
"Can you believe I got paired with Jenna Kinley?" one of the boys, Kelce, said, "Not only are we supposed to work together, but we're also meant to be taking care of babies..." he face palmed himself.
The other boys laughed.
"C'mon, Johnson, 10 year olds are hardly babies," said another one of the boys, Topper, "Besides, working with Kinley will not be nearly as scandalous as working with Hague!"
JJ spoke up next, "Aw, don't be like that, Top," he said, "Madison's not that bad!"
Topper scoffed at JJ, "Easy for you to say! You and Routledge got paired with the best girls out of the bunch! And you got the teens groups!"
Sarah and Caroline smirked at the remark.
"Boys, boys, boys," came John B's voice suddenly, "Let's put this topic behind us, I'm sure you'll all be glad to hear about what I managed to sneak into our cabin." all the boys were now staring at John B in anticipation, "16 bottles of pure, fine whiskey, m'boys. Safe to say, tonight will be a ball."
"Bingo..." Sarah and Caroline smiled mischievously at each other, the perfect prank idea forming in both of their heads.
They quietly made their way back to where all the cabins were and sat at one of the patios.
"So here's the plan," said Sarah, "We sneak into their cabin, raid Routledge's luggage and steal his bottles of whiskey. Let's go now!"
Caroline stopped her, "No, no, not now!" she hissed, "They're gonna go to their cabin before dinner and Routledge's gonna want to show them his stash! We'll sneak out during dinner. Oh, and, I suggest we throw a party of our own to this occasion."
Sarah smirked at Caroline, "I like where you're going with this, Carrie," she said, patting Caroline's shoulder before standing up to go into their cabin, "Not bad for a nerd."
Caroline sighed, there was the old Sarah again.
~~~~~~~~
“Windsor!” Caroline heard a voice behind her call out, “Been paired up for a whole day now and we still haven’t the chance to talk!”
Caroline turned around to find a beaming JJ smiling at her. Had he come over from the boys table specifically for her? She could feel her cheeks beginning to burn slightly.
“We can talk,” she said quickly.
JJ took a seat next to her on the long bench. She could feel the heat in her cheeks become even hotter. JJ didn’t seem to notice her nervousness, or awkwardness.
“How’s life been then?” he asked.
Caroline took a deep breath to soothe her nerves, looking up, only to find a smirking Sarah crossing her arms across from her at the table.
“Just the regular, nothing too special,” she said, frowning quickly at Sarah before turning to face JJ again, hoping he hadn’t noticed Sarah’s behavior.
JJ jokingly frowned, “Nothing too special? I heard you got accepted into Charleston University, that’s like super special.”
Caroline cringed internally, “Did you happen to hear anything else by any chance?”
JJ smirked, “Not sure what you’re talking about,”
Caroline wasn’t sure if he was being serious or not but she pretended to not be bothered.
“Well I hear you’re throwing a party tonight,” Caroline crossed her arms in front of her.
JJ smirked even more, “Where’d you hear that from?”
“Why?” she tempted, “Is my source wrong?”
“Hardly,” JJ bit back, standing up, “So perhaps I’ll see you there.”
With that he walked back to where the other male counsellors were sat, giving one last look at Caroline, smirk never leaving his face.
Sarah started laughing loudly, “Looks like someone’s got their eye on little Carrie,” she teased, “Lucky, lucky bitch.”
Caroline rolled her eyes at her, “Bullshit,”
Sarah leaned over the table to whisper to Caroline, “I like the way you handled the situation, we’re definitely going to be there, on more occasions than one.”
Caroline looked at her watch, “Shit, it’s getting late, we better go now!”
And with that, they snuck their way out of the Wildcat Lodge and towards the boys’ cabin.
“Crap, the door’s locked!” Sarah cursed.
Caroline looked around. One of the upper windows seemed to be open. This gave her an idea.
“Sarah, do you still do cheerleading?” she looked at the girl, a plan forming in her brain.
Sarah raised an eyebrow, “What’s that got to do with anything? And duh, how else would my legs look this good?”
Caroline’s lips turned into a grin, “Give me a lift.”
Sarah’s eyes widened, “Excuse me?”
Caroline nodded her head towards the upper window and Sarah whined, “Why’s it always me?”
Silently, they rushed into position. Sarah took her stance, her hands ready to lift up Caroline’s body. Caroline balanced herself on Sarah’s shoulders as Sarah readied her hands to push her up. In one swift motion, Caroline had pulled herself in through the upper window and was now inside the cabin. She immediately went to the door to unlock the handle from the inside so that Sarah could let herself in.
The two girls looked around the space. It was dark and the only light penetrating into it was the one from the lamps outside. Three pairs of bunk beds were sitting there, covered in unpacked suitcases, boxes and bags.
“Great,” sighed Caroline in annoyance, “How are we ever going to figure out which one’s Routledge’s?”
Sarah took a better look at all of the bunk beds again, her eyes landing on one with a particularly large suitcase with a Green Peace sign on it, “My guess is that it’s that one.”
They went over to the suitcase and Sarah nervously leaned over it, “Eurgh, bug eating Routledge better not have live animals in there,” she said as she quickly ripped open the zipper, flinching away as soon as it came undone.
“That’s it!” Caroline excitedly said, “Help me pick it up!”
The suitcase contained three changes of clothes and a large box filled with unopened bottles of whiskey, just like they had heard John B brag about by the archery area. The two girls combined all of their strength to lift the heavy box off the bed and made their way towards the door, when they heard a loud thumping sound from the back of the cabin. Something heavy had fallen in the corner of the cabin that was unlit by the outdoor lamps, making both girls slightly jump and nearly tip over the box full of alcohol. They squinted their eyes in the direction where the sound came from, however they couldn’t make out anything in the thick darkness.
“What was that?” Sarah said nervously.
“Whatever it was,” Caroline said, leading them out of the door, “We can’t wait around to find out.”
With that they were out of the cabin, closing the door behind them and making their way back to their own cabin quickly.
They hid the box inside the storage room and decided to sneak back into the Wildcat Lodge, so that nobody would question their whereabouts.
There was half an hour left until the end of dinner service as Sarah and Caroline sat back at their designated table, trying to draw as little attention to themselves as they could.
“Do you think someone saw us in there?” whispered Sarah so that only Caroline could hear.
Caroline shrugged her shoulders, “I really hope not, but I did get the weird feeling that we were being watched once we heard that noise,”
Sarah shuddered, “Yeah, major heebie jeebies in there. Glad the boys got that cabin and not us.”
Caroline rolled her eyes, “Relax, Sarah, worst case scenario is it was just one of the guys and he saw us stealing tonight’s party supplies.”
Sarah raised an eyebrow, “I swear to God if it was Routledge -”
“If it was Routledge, he wouldn’t have let us get away with it,”
“Shit, Carrie, you’re totally right!” Sarah unwillingly raised her voice, “Who do you think it was?”
Caroline shrugged again, “Honestly? I don’t think it was anyone, I just think something happened to fall down on its own.”
“Hmm… You’re probably right again.” Sarah turned to look at the big clock on the wall, “We’d better get going, we’ve got to get ready for that party you got invited to!” she winked at Caroline, smirking.
Caroline looked towards the boys table where JJ was already looking back at her, a smile dancing on his thin lips. She met his eyes and a faint blush appeared on her cheeks. She decided to give him a little wave to which he happily waved back.
“Hello?” Sarah’s annoyed voice broke Caroline’s focus from JJ, “Are you coming or what? I want us to look good for when we see the guys’ disappointed faces tonight!”
Caroline sighed and followed Sarah out of the Lodge. Tonight was going to be interesting.

A/N: I know I only just uploaded the first part, but I want to establish the Camp Willowdale universe as fast as possible so that the actual story can take off and it does in the next part. I'm going to create a taglist for people who have shown interest in the story thus far, so if you want to be included, make sure to leave a reply so that I can include you in the next part.
Also if you haven't noticed so far, this story, aside from fun and romantic, will be quite campy so I hope you're into that. We've also got quite the mystery coming up so stay tuned for that as well x
Alsoooo please give me some inspiration on who I can base Caroline off, I'm kind of leaving her up to the reader's imagination so that you can just imagine yourself as her, but ideally I'd like to have someone who's picture I can use for future photos. I've got my mind set on Maia Mitchel, but feel free to drop recommendations too.
Anyways, let me know what you think this far and feel free to check out the rest of my works in my masterlist. xxx

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Part 1:
"I really don't want to do this," Caroline sighed, annoyed at her mother, "And the fact that you're making me do this really proves you know nothing about me."
Her mother rolled her eyes, "I think if anything, it mostly proves that you don't know yourself," she said, folding the last bits of Caroline's luggage, "This used to be your favorite place to go, besides, JJ’s gonna be there." her mother smirked, looking up at Caroline's now widened eyes.
"JJ Maybank?" Caroline turned to face her mother.
Her mother nodded, "JJ Maybank."
If she could, Caroline would've dug herself a hole in the ground right there and then. JJ Maybank used to be a regular at camp Willowdale, just like her, up until a few years ago when he stopped attending. She used to, for the lack of a better word, be obsessed with him. Her and her camp friends would go around the boys' cabins to spy on the boys every evening before dinner, and to say she had an innocent crush on him would be an understatement. What didn't help at all was the fact that over the course of the ten years she'd attended the camp, her mother had become good friends with JJ’s and they would often speak on the phone, all conversations where Caroline was sure her mother would bring her up in.
"I spoke to Joy," her mother spoke, making Caroline immediately stiffen, "Told her about the cute little crush you used to have on JJ back in the day and I think that was reason enough for him to turn down his father's offer to help out at the car dealership for the summer, and apply for a position at camp Willowdale."
If looks could kill, Caroline's mother would have gone right there and then.
"You didn't." said Caroline through gritted teeth.
Her mother smiled mischievously and walked out of her room.
Great, summer hadn't even started and Caroline was already wishing for it to be over...
~~~~~
