ANDOR SPOILERS

god syril’s death near the end of the ghorman arc was done so well. his whole arc in the show is fascinating to me, and i think it’s so important that he doesn’t really fundamentally change as a person at all. like he’s pretty clearly a commentary about the rise of alt-right/fascistic politics in young men.

he spends the entire show angry and self consciously looking down on others, and because of this he’s incredibly susceptible to fascist propaganda. this leads him to chasing the self assurance fueling his anger through the empire gives him, and ultimately his actions leave him just as culpable in the empire’s atrocities whether or not he fully knew about them because he should have known about them. because he let his anger and the ego he got from being a cog in their machine blind him.

even when he fully catches on to what the empire is doing in ghorman, he doesn’t leave his usual cycle of angry reactionary behavior. he reacts violently to dedra and puts all of the blame on her (which isn’t to say she isn’t also culpable here, she very much is, it’s just interesting that he is once again avoiding self reflection), and then sees cassian, the person who for years has been the focus of his misplaced anger, and is then for the last time swallowed by his own anger.

i think this all hits him when cassian says he doesn’t know who syril is. cassian doesn’t have the like personal vindictive relationship with syril that syril perceives between them, to cassian syril is just another cog in the machine of imperialist fascism. because ultimately, that’s what he is. all of his anger, his doubt, and his willful ignorance lead him there. to the spot where he will die as a faceless cog with blood on his hands.

one of the hundred things I love about Andor is that in the end, all the villains were destroyed not in an epic showdown with the rebels or whoever but by the machine that they worked for. syril was a faceless casualty of the genocide he helped create. dedra was done in for putting ambition over conformity to the machine, and she took down partagaz, who essentially created her, along with her. even heert was quite literally killed by his own droid and his own men. all of them were crushed by the wheel they dedicated their lives to keep turning. it's just so deeply deeply satisfying.
