She was one of four new agents the Pinkerton Detective Agency hired that year and proved to be a natural, taking to undercover work easily. She had taken part in embezzlement and railroad security cases when in 1861 the Pinkertons developed the first lead about an anti-Lincoln conspiracy.

"...they point out that in Denmark the McDonald's workers make over twenty dollars an hour. And a while ago I was investigating why this is the case. They don't really give you a good explanation of it in the article, it's just kind of like "well, there's a union agreement". But, how did that happen, because if you try to start a union in McDonald's here it doesn't quite work out for you. So how did they manage to pull that off in Denmark? And I found this article from a Danish source called Arbejdermuseet. This was from 1989, one year after I was born. They were talking about: McDonald's has come to Denmark. It didn't used to be in Denmark, it used to be in America, started spreading out across the world, they come to Denmark. And according to this article, when McDonald's came to Denmark, it would not follow the existing union agreements. So there were union agreements in Denmark for restaurants and similar kinds of establishments and all the restaurants there, they followed the central agreement for restaurant workers. McDonald's comes in, says: fuck that, we're not doing that, we're McDonald's, we don't do unions.
And then what happened was that all hell broke loose in Denmark. Twelve different unions went on strike. Not talking about restaurant worker unions, we're talking about the construction unions who said "we're not building McDonald's stores", port workers, who said "we're not unloading McDonald's machinery when it comes in on the boats", printers: "we're not printing McDonald's menus, we're not printing any of the paper stuff that they use", truckers: "we're not delivering to McDonald's". Twelve different unions just said: "we're done with this, we're going to kill McDonald's basically if they don't want to play ball, and lo and behold, McDonald's very shortly after says: "oh, we've reconsidered. In fact we will follow the restaurant worker's agreement."
And that is why today restaurant workers in Denmark who work at McDonald's make over twenty dollars an hour. " - Matthew Bruenig
Some basic observations:
-McDonald's is not a charity. They wouldn't operate in Denmark if they wouldn't make a profit. So even following the collective bargaining agreement they're still fine. Which means that their low wages and shitty benefits elsewhere are there by choice, not by economic or market necessity
-Now how does the right-wing think about this? They hate it! They want these workers to be exploited, they want them to have low wages. These workers don't deserve better. Why should they get a good wage for such a menial job? That's the mentality of the right-wing. If restaurant workers complain about bad contracts, well, find another job! Learn a skill! But getting paid more? Five weeks paid leave? Unacceptable.
-The world is shit. Capitalists treating the majority of the population like shit is the reason. And it doesn't change, because right-wingers vote against the interests of the majority of the population. They praise union busting, they vote in right-wing politicians who strengthen capital and weaken unions. It's not because the right-wing doesn't realize that unions make things better for workers, it's because the right-wing doesn't want things to get better for workers because if those workers want to have better lives, THEY should put in the effort, not the employers.
-The right-wing must be defeated in order to have a shot at a better world.

a trope i absolutely adore when it's done right is when an apathetic or cynical nonhuman falls in love with humanity through a single ordinary individual. because fuck nihilism and cynicism and "humanity isn't worth caring about because we inevitably do more harm than good". all it takes is one perfectly average person, neither the very best nor the absolute worst, but the one who held out their hand and said let me show you what it is to be human. i will share my life with you. my joy and my sadness. my victories and my defeats. my highest points and my lowest, darkest moments. i will let you experience it all with me. what is mine is yours. wherever we go, we will go there together, you and i. until one day, when that voice in their head asks them give me one good reason why i should care, they take a look at that one person and say i can give you so many, starting with this one

Do you know any kinds of cells with really funky internal structures?
mm probably this one!
Tumblr media
it's Valonia ventricosa (also called bubble algae or sailor's eyeballs) and that whole mess is, in fact, a single cell.
Tumblr media
and because this one cell is so damn huge, it contains multiple nucleuses and billions upon billions of individual chloroplasts.
Tumblr media
go ahead and stick this thing under a microscope, I dare you.
but the really bonkers part... is that in order to reproduce, these fucking things undergo mitosis just like any other cell.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
sure am glad I don't have to deal with that!

It’s official! I started a nonprofit organization and we’re a fully tax-exempt 501(c)(3). We are celebrating by running a Mother’s Day toiletries drive that will benefit a women’s domestic violence shelter in NE Bronx and the SBH Health Systems WIC population. These 90 women will receive a gift tote with pads, tampons, diapers, baby wipes, baby shampoo, and various other toiletries. SBH Health Systems Auxiliary’s department was kind enough to gift us with a one-time contribution of baby wipes, baby shampoo, and pads/tampons. Please check our registry if you would like to chip in some toiletries. Shelters are not able to provide tampons, pads, diapers, and other such toiletries to their residents. Every little bit helps. Thank you!
Registry below:

Or search target registries, orginization DameAblaze.
Also, check us out on Instagram at
instagram.com/dameablaze where we are currently running a giveaway for our followers! Check out how to enter on our giveaway post.

Happy birthday to Mary Shelley, writer of the most iconic science fiction story ever, Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus. One amazing story, so many great interpretations.
