yayyyy i can finally share my fic from the @jmgiftexchange 2020 - i wrote this fic for the amazing @zoe-bug who requested Jean and Marco as amateur teen ghost hunters with some slow-burn romance!! and me? well, what can i say, i’m always a slut for ghosts, spooky shit, and friends to lover romances. i’m considering writing a NSFW companion piece to this in the future, too!

Title: our hands at night Written For: @zoe-bug Rating: T Pairing: Jean/Marco Word Count: 8,889 Summary:  Jean and Marco have been neighbors since they were 10 years old, and have been best friends since they were 12. Every possible moment of their childhood was spent together. But now, at 19 years old, they’ve gone off to college. And even though they chose to attend the same school, Jean chose to live in the dorms, while Marco opted for an apartment a couple miles from campus. Marco, with his passion for ghost hunting and the paranormal, attempts to occupy his time and distract himself from missing Jean by working on his homemade EMF reader and spirit box but finds that it’s not enough. Relenting, he asks Jean to come over, and even convinces him to accompany him on a midnight trip to a supposedly haunted elementary school. Along with some spooky encounters, Marco and Jean seek comfort in each other, and allow their unspoken feelings to come to light.

Ghost Jean and Vampire Marco having a romantic affair in the 1300′s in a swampy abandoned graveyard! :D

He shut his eyes and buried his forehead into the crook of his arms, the cool glass of the counter pressing into his chin.

He’d never seen someone come alive over something as mundane as a book.

He’d never listened to someone talk so rapturously about something as mundane as a stupid, fucking book.

He’d never stood behind this counter and gazed into space, all thoughts dashed from his skull by the memory of a pair of dark eyes set aglow by a self-kindled spark meeting his, the lopsided smile filling out freckled cheeks, as if delight could be prescribed; the steady rumble of a voice preaching a sermon he didn’t believe in but couldn’t help but be enchanted by.

Chills ran across the surface of Jean’s flesh. He dug his fingers into his arms and sunk his teeth into the back of his hand.

Stood behind this counter he’d stood behind a thousand times before, he’d never felt more lonely.

When Jean falls in love is a fool who doesn’t know how to talk, maybe the fact that he’s in a DnD group can help him.

The confident (or arrogant) personality of the thief Jean helps him flirt with the wizard Marco, who for the first time is the one who is enchanted and not the one who enchants.

After flirting while playing DnD, they are now flirting in real life.

Summary:

Getting used to the world’s “new normal” was something Jean Kirschtein was having trouble with. In fact, he had reassured himself that he might never feel that sense of normality ever again.

Perhaps what he needed was a change in scenery - and it just so happened to be brought in quite a unique turn of events, featuring a man who loved finding beauty in works of art; someone who had stars on his skin, and warmth in his eyes.

Important Update!!

Hello all!  Just a heads up - we've been getting a lot of extension requests so we will be delaying the reveal by a day.  

That means your finished work should be posted to the AO3 collection by Saturday, Jan. 9th, 2021 at 11:59 PM EST.  Click here for your timezone. 

Also, for those who were having issues posting to the AO3 collection, it looks like there was an incorrect setting.  It's fixed now, so you should all be able to post freely to the collection!  Please let us know if you have any other troubles. :)  We look forward to revealing everyone's work on Sunday, Jan. 10th!
