Hey Broadway! I have proof that professionally recorded broadway musicals should be a thing:

They always say that Broadway bootlegs make people not want to see the show in person but really it’s the opposite. The proof?

Newsies: Live.

Frankly, I would’ve been content watching the movie version of newsies and couldn’t have cared less about the broadway version or any other broadway show until I saw the live version of Newsies on Netflix, and now I’m basically obsessed with Broadway and absolutely dying to see a live musical. Not only that, but since it’s widely available, I’m also able to share it with my friends and have gotten them into broadway musicals as well, which they wouldn’t have been if I had just seen a live show and told them about it.

Disney proved that people are willing to pay for high quality, professionally recorded versions of Broadway musicals. Gladly. And if anything, it made more people excited to go to their shows.

Filming their show had other benefits, like expanding their fan base. They weren’t/aren’t limited to the certain amount of people who went to the show or those who live or can afford or have the time to travel to New York. They weren’t limited by those who could pay for the ticket or had time to attend a show, etc. Newsies is global and it can reaches people everywhere.

Not only that, but people are going to continue to watch broadway bootlegs illegally no matter what. At least then the musical makes some money, plus the fans are excited to have better quality film.

Broadway needs to realize that if they really want to expand their market and make musicals popular again, they should sell professionally recorded versions of their musicals because people will pay both for the DVD/digital copy AND to see it live.

Expand and revive the Broadway experience and family by professionally filming the shows.
