Portfolio, final evaluation.
Throughout my portfolio, I have used an array of techniques that I have learned throughout the year which I find make the images more interesting and eye catching. I feel like my choice of images was very effective as they all relate to the same theme of abstract images.
For our final project, we had to plan and photograph 6 different shoots using the techniques we learned from workshops we learned throughout the year. I really liked this project as it gave us a lot of freedom to explore what our biggest strengths are and to further explore what we learned in the previous folios. It also allowed me to have a better understanding of my camera and allow me to fully test what it’s capable of. What I enjoyed most about this project was shooting the images and optimizing them; I loved being able to bring the image to life. While shooting my story telling shoot, I used the histogram for the first time which I found made it easier to ensure that the image wasn’t over or under exposed. I also learned how to properly compose an image to ensure it had a lot of impact on the viewer. When shooting macro, I used a speedlite with a homemade macro diffuser for the first time. I would like to develop my skills with using my speedlite as I feel it can be used it very creatively. Photographers that influenced me are Brandon Woelfel, Macro Room (on YouTube), Jake Hicks, Jenny Holzer, Hazel Evans, David Hamilton and Maya Beano. They influenced my photographs as they encouraged me to think more creatively. I enjoyed using the histogram as it’s easier to properly expose the image. I feel my ink photoshoot was the most successful as I got the most aesthetic pleasing looking images compared to my other shoots. Unfortunt3ely, I wasn’t able to shoot more climate change due to doctor’s instructions to rest and not exert too much due to an injury to my sternum. Because of this, I learned I should do multiple shoots of one subject quickly to avoid having this problem in the future. This means my images couldn’t be as best as they could have been. I feel like my style of photography is more creative and abstract so if I were to redo this project, I would definitely go down that route of abstract images. I feel some of the image’s compositions could have been framed better and some are pretty dark.  When printing m y images I decided to use a printing service that was recommended to me, Loxley prints. Their price is fairly cheap, and they have fast delivery. When choosing what type of print I wanted, I looked through their options for different print finishes; gloss, lustre, metallic and velvet. Out of these, I chose for a velvet finish as I wanted a very matte image as the clear sleeve is very shiny. When arranging my final prints in the portfolio I purposefully arranged them into subtle triptychs to create the most impact, as well as putting my best work to the front, so it’s the first impression people see when they open my portfolio. I am very proud with how my final portfolio has turned out and if I had to do this again, I would choose a Giclee fine print to get a higher quality image.
