3rd year of Art and Design
For this Year project, we were told to create something we like that relates with us, we had the opportunity to choose ourselves the theme and what to do.
This project has three phases, first research and choosing of the theme, second would be the creation of pieces in order to “study” and develop our work, in which the first exhibition will be placed as “THE PROCESS” and the third is going to be the final exhibition where we are going to present our final piece after a year of development.
In the first phase, I did research about the Mayans and Aztec culture because its something I have always been interested in, all their patterns, statues, paintings and costumes always fascinated me. The way they were simple tribes and so evolved at the same time its amazing. I researched these two tribes at the begging as well because we had to make a dissertation and my topic was Mayan and Aztec symbolism but after the dissertation, I focussed my process work more in Mayan culture because there is more information about it.
Since I was a kid I always loved drawing illustration and I always loved animation movies and episodes and histories about everything.
My favourite type of histories has been always Myths and Legends, from Roman myths to Greek or even Portuguese I was always interested in it so I thought about creating some type of animations or Illustrations with Mayan myths.
I did some research about Mayan myths in which I found a lot but my favourites are:
- The Legend of Aluxes
- The legend of Xtabay and the flower of Xtabentum
- The Dwarf in Uxmal
Because I'm still in the process part I can't have a final idea so I have been doing a lot of different illustrations and trying different sizes and materials.

Video of the final work
I wasn't able to share the real file because it was too big to save and to share so I recorded with my phone. It was supposed to have a background music from the game “Tony Hawk Underground 2. The music was supposed to be “Johnny Cash - Rings of Fire” because it was my favourite music in the game when I used to play. In the beginning and at the end of the trick I added pictures from the real video to strongly show when it starts the trick and when it finishes. I reduced the speed time of the landing of the trick to symbolize the pressure of landing the trick and to get some emotion to the viewer.

Final work
After the studio lab I made some modifications to my animation, I added more frames to it and add two images from the real video, I tried to mix the print screens with my draws but it didn't look good so my final piece is the coloured animation made with watercolours, pencil and putted together in Photoshop program.

FLAT PACK FILM FESTIVAL STUDIO LAB WEEK
In the studio lab week, I set up most of the frames I made during the week,
Monday I painted 48 frames one by one with watercolours at the studio.
Tuesday I posted the painted frames to the wall and built my working space and later went to the university to build one of the animations in photoshop in which took me around 4 hours because the computers kept on not working and I lost my work 3 times because of the computer...
Wednesday I was only able to go to university to finish building the animations on the photoshop program because I had to go to work at 16
Thursday I finished the second animation at the studio and at the university
Friday I was at studio lab with everything ready for the public from 10 -16.
A piece of art I made related to 1968 with paper, pens and paint:

In the images above we can see a piece I made that is a mix of Tony Hawk life moments, for example, 68 was when he was born, Birdhouse is his skate brand, 4 is the number of sons he has between others. This piece is part of the final work as well because it relates and has bits of the animation as well. I named it “Chronologically”.

As we can see in the image above its a piece of art I made with different bits of coloured card, pens, pencil, watercolour and tape. In this piece, we can see some things about Tony life as well but the idea of this piece is to be a study to create the animation. As you can see there are some lines made with watercolours with different tones of colours that were to study the colour for the animation and the different sizes of the person skating was as well a study of sizes. So I mixed all together to make this piece in which I named it “MASH”.

PHOTOGRAPHY 1968:

About photography, I didn’t identify name or explanation of the picture to pass from a historical event to art, the photo is an art that sometimes is misunderstood by knowing what is happening on it which sometimes ruins it. Without subtitle, my idea is to make you look well at the pictures and try to understand what was happening in that same picture in 1968.

FlatPackFilmFestival Project
Theme: 1968
I started my research about the year of 1968 by months, the first month I researched was January in which was chosen to present to the class as well because each person had to research one month. Then I did by countries that I thought would have a lot of things happening in 68, I researched about my own country Portugal, United Kingdom, United States of America, South Africa, China, India.
This is some of my research about what I found interesting happening in 1968 and that I thought I could be interesting for my work:
In May, while playing ball in the street, Basquiat is hit by an automobile.
Donagh MacDonagh dies with 55 years old, was a writer, poet, and composer of plays
MC Esher foundation was established by himself

When I finally decided what I wanted to make for the Flatpack Film Festival I when to make research about it.
I decided to make about Tony Hawks who was born on 12 of May 1968.
I was interested in Tony Hawks life because he is like a hero to me, he skates since he was a kid and still with 49-year-old almost 50 skates better than lots of people in the world.
He was considered the best vert ramp skater in the world a lot of times and he was the first to land the 900º trick when he was young when he was 48 he landed the trick again after a lot of tries.
One thing that I love about Tony Hawk is how passioned he is with this sport and how he kept doing it all his life and always doing new challenges has “ the downward spiral loop” or “the Tony Hawk loop of death”.

ANIMATION RESEARCH
In the video above I inspired myself with the way the animation is made on the image so I had an idea for my own work to mix real images with animation.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oshbQnXLeP8
Sketchfab - social media for animation works to sell and buy
https://sketchfab.com/search?q=skaters&sort_by=-pertinence&type=models
In this website, I was able to see a lot of animation works made by professionals, searched for the word “skate” and I found interesting works but not what I was looking for yet.
this picture shows an animated 3D model work I enjoyed called “Skating Robot - Lowly” made by the user grave drinker

https://sketchfab.com/models/797ecb92af7e415db8869aa12bc7348e
In this link by Slampochka user “Skater 1 -2800 3", I could see a short animation of a man riding a board to understand the movement but its too “realistic” for what I want to do. I want to make an animation simple but good.
In this website, I wasn’t able to find any skate animation videos that I enjoyed so I checked in Vimeo some more animation works.
I found Karolina Glusiec who makes an animation with pencil draws which I enjoyed so I tried to make some animations on that style.
I liked her work called “LATARNIA RECORDS” and “Velocity”. I found it interesting how she makes the animations so simple but complex at the same moment.
A video and photos above we can se an animation getting color along the video wich I found really interesting and I think I might try to make it as well.
https://vimeo.com/23199805
I started by doing four animations of Tony Hawk doing a 900 with four different styles to be able to experiment and explore the potential of animation.
A few frames of the video 900º trick:
The first one I did with color and contrast, the second one just with color, the third just with pencil to be able to experiment the texture in animation and the third one with black pen doing the background just with doodles and “flashes” of cameras and the character just with one line making it simple and interesting.
In the fourth animation, Tony t-shirt is with different lines during the trick to symbolize the pressure, the same happens with the background with doodles and flashes to symbolize the photographers catching the historical moment.
Idea - mix the animation with bits of the real film.

Creative Text
In my creative text, I decided to write a poem letter for an Artificial Intelligent robot as the serial killers used to do in old movies, pasting letters from different magazines and newspapers so that it couldn’t find me.
In the poem, I tell him how awful would be a world with it where we would lose our jobs and we wouldn't have money to eat and they would take over the world. I did it two types of paper that symbolize, peace (white) and nature (brown).
POEM:
Mr Robot in my world
I write you this
concerned and mad
That when I grow old
Everything will be
empty and cold
I ask you please don't
take over
You have the brains
but not the hearth
To take this world and life
people work, pay bills
but with you here
I’ll take some pills
Cause I am afraid of what’s to come
Honestly, I want to run
Don't want this for my son
There will be no jobs
and no more life
only robot mobs
when they arrive
so Mr Robot bye bye

Annotated bibliography

Colour is Power - Hardcover (book) Robert Walker, 9 September 2002.
The book “Colour is Power” was made by Robert Walker who was born in Montreal, where he studied painting at Sir George Williams University. Which later developed an interest in street photography, moving to New York City in 1978.
Robert published four books, three of them with the same name “Colour is Power” and the other called “New York Inside Out” whereupon all of them had been made of photographies from the big city of New York.
I inspired myself in this book for my work using a lot of images from it for my own work, I chose them carefully first then I scanned them and used for my collages. I found this book really interesting in the way that is made because the whole book is made of photography prints without descriptions, just separated in chapters with different colours distinguishing different parts of the city which made it easier to choose where to take images from for my work.
The name “Colour is Power” is really suitable for the book because all the photographs are full of colour, that was a big factor me to choose this book in order to put colour in my work and make the contrast with the monotone world we would have if there were only robots. I used pictures as the billboard I have in my practical work because the colour was strong and vivid, in my work, the billboard has an advert from Coca-Cola with a women with lipstick and a shape of Coca-Cola bottle in her mouth, the colour of her skin is really vivid which influenced me to use it.
Another factor the attracted me in this book was the city environment that contains loads of affairs I could use for my practice as clocks, people, cars, buses among others. The billboards and advertisements in the metropolitan photos in Robert Walker's book inspired me to create my piece in the way they influence people to what they are selling so I used it as if they were selling an Artificial Intelligence world.
The last factor that made me choose this book to take pictures from it and influenced me on my work is the technology all around the city as radio satellites and cellphones that are all connected and relates with my theme of the internet.
The only thing I don’t like about this book is that I would like some descriptions for some of the images to understand the photograph ideas and why he choose to take the picture there at that moment, it would be nice as well to have a contrast from the centre city to the suburbs but overall I was impressed with this book and its quality.
In conclusion I used this book more as a source of resources to make my collages, I took around thirty images from it and printed them in colors and black and white to be able to make a mix and show a contrast between human world (colour) and robot world (dark), the biggest inspiration this book gave me was in colourway because of it strong colours as I said before.

Lo and Behold: Reveries of the Connected World (documentary) Werner Herzog 27 of October 2016. 98min
"Lo and Behold” is an American documentary film directed by Werner Herzog where he considers the existential impact of Artificial Intelligence, Internet, Robotics, The internet of things and impact on human life.
This documentary starts in California LA where the internet was born where Leonard Kleinrock, internet pioneer from UCLA shows us the room where was created the first computer and the first computer. The documentary follows on into the explanation of the creation and development of the internet along it first years. The name “Lo” from the documentary comes from the firsts word passed from a computer to the other will trying to type log in the computer crashed after "L O” so they named the documentary “Lo and Behold” like what comes after that.
This is divided into ten chapters about different types of technology but the ones I focus myself for my work was the internet of things, the robots and the AI.
About the internet of things Sebastian Thrun gives an interview about the self-driving car where he explains that there is already cars that can drive themselves, a question is asked that is, “what if there is an accident, who do you blame?”, in which Sebastian answered that if an accident happens all cars will be aware of it because it automatically passes the information for all cars, even car not yet “born” and the same type of accident won’t happened again. The car is oriented by dots on GPS transmitted by WiFi showing where people, cars and points of energy are so it doesn’t crash.
In the VIII Chapter Danny Hillis, Computer Scientist comments in the topic of Artificial Intelligence that it may follow the will of people that establish its utility function, in other words, people that program their optimisation options.
That means that AI if programmed by the wrong person can cause a lot of damage, machines are faster our brains.
Sebastian Thrun says in his interview, “We are looking for machines to make things for us but we are changing our moral and what means to be human”. What he means with this is that if we make a robot human, the human word loses value because machines should be just machines and not have feelings or consciousness, we shouldn’t play god.
Danny Hills still ads a comment, “ Computers are the worst enemy of deep critical thinking, we use machines to replace examination of the things they are observing, they don’t understand what they are looking at, they depend on the internet to tell them, they look at the numbers instead of ideas, they fail to understand concepts.” Which means if there is a variable the “computer” is not programmed with it may crash or fail in the service.
With this documentary I was able to see that there are more people worried about AI, and I could understand better the technology development that is so fast that is scary, Sebastian Thrun said something that I found interesting, "if machines develop love for each one probably a dishwasher could fall in love with the washing machine and they would be dating instead of cleaning plates or clothes and I would be angry." And I agree, machines are made to facilitate our life and not for loving each other, they don’t need emotions.

Ex Machina (feature film) Alex Garland. 21 of January of 2015. 108min.
“Ex Machina” is a movie directed by Alex Garland with the participation of the main actors Domhnall Gleeson, Alicia Vikander and Oscar Isaac.
In the course of the movie, we get to know the code programmer called Caleb Smith (Domhnall Gleeson) who won the opportunity to meet the first intelligent robot called Ava. Called meets Nathan Bateman (Oscar Isaac), CEO of the company which is creating the Artificial Intelligence in secret due to the information be very valuable and he wants Caleb to perform the “Turing Test”.
This test is, in “standard interpretation” when the interrogated (Caleb), is given a task which resembles on trying to determine which Ava, in this case, is recognised as a computer or human with some given questions. Usually there is a human and a computer (robot) to compare both answers but in this case, Caleb only met Ava and he could tell it was a robot because of the body full of machinery but the dialogue was like a human. In order to pass the test, the computer must be recognised as human.
The house where Caleb is being hosted looks like a house from the future covered in tech with the wall lined with electricity cables and top automatic security, the doors are open by cards and when the electricity goes off the house gets into lockdown for precaution that no one is able to get inside when that happens.
Caleb has several sessions to test Ava where he is monitored by Nathan that wants to understand if Ava is genuinely capable of thought and consciousness and whether he can relate to Ava despite knowing she is artificial. Along with their sessions, they begin showing feelings for each other and especially the desire of experience the outside world together and with this Ava begins to trigger to power outages that deactivate the surveillance system so that they can talk in private and Ava tells Caleb how bad and lier Nathan is. Caleb starts to be more aware of Nathan and in order of being in love with Ava, when he finds out that Ava is just one more robot prototype and may be turned off after the test, he gets upset and during a power cut in a session with Ava he plans to get Nathan drunk and escape with her looking Nathan inside the house by changing the system and at 10 am Ava would perform a power cut to run.
The plan doesn't go well but at 10 am the doors open with the power cut and Ava escapes, kills Nathan and leaves Caleb lockdown in the house which shows that Ava managed to fake emotions and play with a human emotion in order to escape and still killed her creator.
In this movie I noticed how dangerous might be to create a robot with emotions and intelligence able to lie , that's the things that distinguish us from them and in the movie we can see a robot deceiving and killing a human just to escape and how they can make people fall in love with them if needed and I relate my work to the notion of afraid of artificial intelligence and how they may harm the human being. They can be used as weapons, spies everything if we don't notice it is a robot so it would be extremly dangerous in my opinion and after watching this movie I agree even more.

Group work InTh3NET
https://inth3net.tumblr.com/InThe3Net is the name we choose for our group and everything, it means “in the net” like if someone is inside the net so our group in everythis is like a world of internet, on the website the idea is to pass to another world, the net, in the exhibition we wanted to create a space where the viewer would feel like he was inside the net and the book same thing. And the compost of “IT3NET” visually looks like internet in caps lock.
We had to create a website, an exhibition, and Publication in a group of 10 so we choose leaders for each topic, I was one of the leaders of website but I helped in the other topics as well because that was what we should and did, there were leaders but everyone helped with everything.
WEBSITE
In the website, we used Adobe Muse to create the page, we choose a huge size for people be able to if in middle of the website scroll up, down, right, left. The idea of our website is as if was the world of internet and the person who would be using it would have to “browse” in all the visual information of the website and see that person likes, we have pictures of the processes and final pieces of each one of the group spread around the website with different effects on them, some images where we pass the arrow of the mouse pops up colours or links with that person’s artist blog with different types of letters or colours that fit well with the colours from the pictures next to them, some even pops up more images or edited versions of the same. The website as it scrolls down it fades in black pixels. All these glitches, layering and images have been used to create chaos and confusion of the internet.
Website creation (Adobe Muse)
Website creation (Adobe Muse)
Website without mouse the on images.
Website with the mouse on images.
Website with the mouse on image of the plant, that's why the blog links pops up.
In our website, we did like it was the internet o there are zones with lez images or images with glitches when it says error or has the sign of low internet.
We have pieces repeated and multiplied to be sure people see them.
Website InTh3NET
Website InTh3NET
Website InTh3NET
This image bellow shows one of our initial ideas when we were still going to present on the website “written part” but we opted later by using just images and links. And we weren't able to introduce our logo in the center of the screen and move as we scrolled it so we opted for not using the logo and just be visual information because of its an artistic website.

EXHIBITION
For the exhibition, we did some different plantings, we wanted to create a magical space like the viewer would be getting on the internet but we thought we would have our own room for that, as it wasn't we had to change the idea, we thought about doing a close space as we can see in image number 1 but it would be too much wood, no space and too claustrophobic so we changed. We thought about hanging a textile around the lights of the room as we can see in the plans of image number 1 the lights and how would look in image 2, but we couldn't because of health and safety rules. So finally we had the idea of constructing rectangular structures of wood that would make a kind of maze to see all pieces like the internet to get somewhere we need to pass a lot of things first sometimes, the draws on image 2 show this plan. Then I had the idea to cover them with space blankets to give the idea of inside internet.

PUBLICATION
For the publication, we did a zine printed with digital printing.co.uk.
The initial idea was to print using a Risograph printer, but it wasn't possible because it would take to long to print all but anyways the website we used was a good website because the book was printed and delivered in two days. In my opinion, the zine looks really good and has the chaos, confusion, images, glitches and layering we wanted to look like the internet world.
For this zine, we printed each version one after the other layering the colours on top of each other as if I was using a risograph printer.
Kieran decided to bind the zine using a piece of wiring from an old phone charger cable. He thought this subtle use of technology in the actual construction of the book would be a nice touch.

To Much World: Is the internet death?
oIn this module we were divided into groups of ten and given a topic to choose, we chose "To Much World: Is the internet death?” witch then we would have to individually create a practical work (piece of art) related to it.
In the beginning, I made a mind map with everything that relates to the internet as pirates, hackers, social media, etc.

Mind map

Mind map
After reviewing my mind map I opted for the theme Deep web which is an “illegal” hidden browser where we can find all types of things. I was interested about the wonders of the internet that can’t be reached by everyone, all the dangers and illegal things we could reach there as guns, hit mans, drugs, organ traffic, etc. That is a certain way kind of scared me as well.
I started researching it, I was advised to look into a platform called 4chan that is similar to the deep web in pirate terms but we could find normal things as well as gifs or jokes images… I went to look into Imageboard websites, anonymous and guidelines websites. Then I did some research about the “Inversion” by Zach Blas which I didn’t understand that well, the 1º practice, the constituting and outside.
I did some artist research witch Metahaven is one of the main ones, I liked his works because they are really graphic and show a bit the confusion that internet is.

Metahaven

Metahaven
Metahaven
After the research, I started having some ideas, and my main idea was a gradient of images from top (legal things on the deep web) till it gets darker by the number of images in the bottom (illegal things on the deep web) as you can see in the image a sketch of it. I did 200 screenshots, 100 with bright color, 100 darker and a mix of another 100 screenshots to build with it.

After all of this and after trying to get in the deep web failing my attempt I thought about changing the topic to something that I could be more interested. I wasn’t enjoying the work and I didn’t realise why until I figured it out that was because I didn’t like the theme technology and internet because it’s taking over the world but I couldn’t change that so I thought about doing something that shows my side of why its bad for us in a certain way the technology. So I dropped the deep web topic and I jumped into the 4th industrial revolution.
I did some research to understand what was it and I realised there was more topics inside it.
Some topics of 4th industrial revolution:
- artificial intelligence
- education
- agriculture
- employment
- vehicles
Studies say that:
- uber is a virtual company that doesn’t possess real cars and is now the biggest taxi company in the world.
- there will be less 90% of lawyers thanks to new tech programs.
- virtual nurses will recognize 4 times faster cancer then real humans.
- facebook will recognize better faces than real humans.
- there are studies that say that in 2030 computers will be smarter than humans.
- there will be no more coal mines because of the renewable energies, so less work for people.
- there will be population reducement with all the absence of work.
- 75-80% of labor is gonna run out
"It would be presumptuous to try to accurately describe the next era in the digital world. But it is reasonable to conclude that the internet we have known for almost three decades is changing and that the next one will change the world more than its older sister "- Vincent Mosco, in an article published in the IHU News of the Day.
Artificial Intelligence
It's a dangerous topic because it's difficult to control something that thinks for them selfs and doesn't have feelings.
Stephen Hawkins says it could spell the end of the human race.
"In the eighteenth century, Julien Offray de La Mettrie questions the Cartesian distinction between body and soul, and asks the question: why not imagine that the soul is a product of matter? It thus opens the way to artificial intelligence as we understand it today, in a materialistic and no more spiritualistic conception. The roboticists no longer seek to put the knowledge in the head of the robots, as the god of Descartes would have done with our souls, but make them capable of exercising basic sensory-motor functions that they can then complex, more intelligent "- Jean-Michel Besnier is a philosopher and doctor of political science, in an interview published in the IHU's News of the Day.

Where did internet come from?
Internet came from ARPANET, was born through the connection of military network with universities and research centers, was a network that connected big computers with medium computers from university to university, with the time passing more networks joined until we got to the world network we have nowadays.
Nowadays internet is a network of people and community
internet of things:
The internet of things is all the devices that are connected to the internet, Bluetooth and Wifi, like cell phones, televisions, car, etc.
"A Cisco study predicts that the Internet of Things will have an economic value of $ 14.4 trillion in a decade in the world. Of this total, about 50% of the highest economic value is in machine-to-machine connections"
internet had three phases:
-computer network
-people and community network
-the network of things (cellphone, television, cars)
Nowadays you can:
have an automatic house that you can control it through a tablet. (energy, heater, locks, cameras etc)
cities can spread sensors that predict the weather through the wind and humidity
cars can connect with each one to warn about traffic and accidents
you can wear watches or clothes that tell you your heartbeat and call your doctor in case of problems
fridges can automatically ask for the products that are running out

IDEAS FOR COLLAGES:
- Robot made with human parts, like half face half metal and computer parts with fire around and chaos to show the danger of artificial intelligence
- Printing blocks of houses, everything the same
- Printing threes to show the irony of the lost of threes with space were we build houses and cut threes (like the inversion, houses destroyed and threes being built, with constructors)
- Computers eating dressed in suits and people naked crying for food
- Steak man fat, seated in a flying chair with everything accessible and easy to get to show the irony of how technology can make you useless
- Loads of collages with internet usual things, to fill the entire page to show how the internet is filled with hundreds of millions of things
After all my research about 4th Industrial Revolution I chose one topic in it, I chose artificial intelligence because is something that makes me concerned because robots may be really dangerous and a threat to the human race.
Some videos I inspired my research on:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=3&v=ulnv9U20SZ4

Some reasons I am afraid of them:
Robots may want us to give them human rights, they will ask for citizenships and wages. The good thing is, they will also pay taxes.
Robots are learning to deceive , there is an algorithm allowing robots to choose to tell lies, and make sure you will never find out
Israel and South Korea are already using killer robots, in auto mode, these robots can decide whether to kill you or not - without the approval of a human operator
Military robots can switch sides, it’s possible that an enemy army could hack robots and use them against their original owners, even your self-driving car can kill you by going against a wall
Around 48 million Twitter accounts are operated by bots
Some of them will inform you of natural disaster, but others are being used to brainwash you
Al will soon replace your lovers
By 2050, human-on-robot sex will become the new norm
By 2053, Al will be performing surgeries, as well as 50% of all other existing jobs
Researchers are teaching Al to feel emotions which is probably the last quality that differentiates us from robots
They will become too intelligent to remain under human control
Robots will develop the ability to engineer themselves and possibly wipe out humanity.

With all the information I gathered about artificial intelligence started doing some digital collages:

Mr. Robot, João Pinto, 2017

Robo-President, João Pinto, 2017

Evil-Conection, João Pinto, 2017

Union, João Pinto, 2017

Motherboard, João Pinto, 2017
These images are some collages and photoshop I edit in photoshop. Its a mad robot with half the face of the creator of the artificially intelligent robot called Sophia, the other half of the face is that exact same Sophia and The background is red to show chaos, in other there are two robots on the side to show support for the robots to the robot leader to destroy the human race, and in other the background is either white to show the void of a world of robots instead of humans and the last background is a motherboard crossing it showing that the world powered by tech and we shouldn't become that same thing because we are humans.
When I did this digital collages I realized that if I did it digitally I would be supporting the tech and I would be going against all I’ve researched and supported so I started looking into some magazines, books, and newspapers to make some handmade collages. I looked into the book “10 years of pictures” of Paul Solberg that has a lot of pictures of the city environment and technology, I scanned pictures from the pages 17,40,73,94,123 and 207 to cut and past, then I saw the book “Color is power” by Robert Walker which I scanned the pages 33,40,42,44,45,46,53,54,120 and 133, and in las I scanned pages from the book of David Carson where I scanned the pages 70 and 71, 72 and 73.

I looked into some artists as:
Mark Andrew
Rael Brian
Gregory Arth
Kurt Schwitters
After gathering a lot of images and things to cut and paste I printed a load of them and I begun to do some collages, the first one looked really bad so I threw them away but after a few collages they begun looking good, I looked into some technics of collages and I did it.

The images above are some of the some of the pictures I used for my collages.
Here are some examples of some of my collages:

Prosecution, João Pinto 2017

Robotisation, João Pinto, 2017

Warnings, João Pinto, 2017

Labor, João Pinto, 2017

Untitled 3, João Pinto, 2017

Untitled 4, João Pinto, 2017

After I did around 30 collages I thought about doing some paint marking, I remade some of my collages, some in black and white so that when I add color it would highlight the color and some with normal color. These are some examples of my work:

Street-cleaner, João Pinto, 2017

Devil’s disguise, João Pinto, 2017

Mind floating, João Pinto, 2017

Untitled 6, João Pinto, 2017

Fractions, João Pinto, 2017

Untitled 9, João Pinto, 2017

Untitled 10, João Pinto, 2017

Untitled 11, João Pinto, 2017
After making the collages with paint marks I was happy with the results so I thought about choosing one to be the main one for the exhibition and this was the chosen one:

I inspired myself in this collage that I made to create my final piece, I used a website called Rasterbator to resize the image to be able to print it in big size but in different pages A4, then I found a support for my piece (A0 piece of wood) , I pasted recycled paper and the job find part of the newspaper then I started doing collages and painting my work.

Piece of wood already worked

Details of the final piece, as we can notice in this detail I pasted some of the images first in black and white and then colors to be able to rip them off to have a contrast between color and black and white, like if black and white is the technology and robots (boring) and colors would be life that its being killed by robots.

The takeover , João Pinto 2017
The picture above is my final piece.
Explanation:
The women using a white shirt is a robot called Sophia , using white showing she is peaceful but in my painting is an ironic way, she has crosses in her eyes like the women in the billboard to symbolise how I am against a robot world, the robot behind Sophia shows the robot support for their leader (in this case Sophia). The yellow man is yellow to capture the viewer attention and because it means light showing that the human is the light and not the robots, and it says “Up for everything” to demonstrate how the human being will be desperate to get a job when robots take all the jobs. The man cleaning the streets is a way of showing the humans will have the worst jobs (even cleaning streets the robots will do), under that man we can se a different texture that is “paper” that I took from a tree to demonstrate the nature in middle of all of this change. The black in the painting shows the darkness of this world and the red shows death. The stripes in the red mean prison because we will be stuck in a dead world.
When I had my final piece made I decided to create a zine with my works:

Then I did some tests of color printing:

My piece in the Exhibition:
Initially, I thought about hanging my piece in the wood structures but because the wood structure was too weak to hold it so I was struggling about what to do as w can see in the image 1 I was thinking about leaving it on the floor but then I went to find solutions and I found tripod to put my piece as we can see in image 2. Then there was something missing so I decided to add space blanket around the tripod as we can see in image 3 my piece looks more integrated into the exhibition, in the world of internet.

CONCLUSION
In this work I had some struggles at the begging with about “what to do” problem, I had to change theme in the middle of the term but it was a good choice because I had a lot of ideas right away, I enjoyed working with the artificial intelligence and was fun do pass from topic to topic, like from internet to 4th industrial revolution to internet of things to AI, I think my research was really good beacuse I was able to find information for my piece in books, websites, movies, docummentarys and music. I worked different sizes, A5, A4, A3, and A0 for the final piece. I worked different collage techniques and worked with colour and black and wites making different paint marks. In my opinion, this work worked out good. In conclusion, I think I filed all the requested inquiries for my work.

A short description of the concept of the piece - what is the idea and how is the medium &
To create this piece I got inspired by the world of drugs and addiction that somehow I felt it related with the material I used, the foil paper because its used in Portugal to “transport” drugs such as heroin and crocodile. At the begging I wasn’t sure what to do but I wanted to do something aggressive that could contrast with softness of the foil paper and the most aggressive drug is heroin so I went with that one, then I wanted to show how that drug and the addiction were bad so I decided to literally draw the act of injecting. I thought about doing a skeleton injecting a human as if the skeleton is the death and addiction taking control of the human. To get to the point of the skeleton and the human I did some research on some artists first, I saw a lot of paintings about drugs especially in Pinterest I searched for the words “drugs”, ”artworks” and after seeing a lot of artworks I found what I wanted and I started drawing.

As we can see in my artwork the skeleton is grabbing the human helping him to inject him self, the skeleton (death and addiction) grabs the syringe to inject the man wile the man holds his arm to get high. To create the form of the skeleton grabbing the man I got inspired by the picture above.

My artwork Its made in the A3 size with foil paper and card stock.

The whole concept of my work is the relationship between addiction and death and how in drugs both can kill a human because it consumes him self.
Evidence of a minimum of 5 tests/ experiments from either the beginning of the project /
1- I drew with a acetate black pen in the foil paper

2- I carved in the foil paper to look like it was sculpted

3- I carved in the foil paper as well but I turned it around so that the texture was salient

4- I drew with lipstick then I spilled flour on it to get stuck to it and make the effect that looks like another drug cocaine to relate to my work

5- I painted with black paint the foil paper then I carved on it with a spoon and the black paint got out and the draw in the black paint was shining.

developmental work leading up to the finished piece

Evidence of a minimum of 5 artist/ designer references; which are image based and describe
I got inspired by Leonardo Da Vinci because of the body studies to know how to make movement and perfect body structure, I saw most of his drafts of human muscles and bones to get inspired.

Milk, Logyu or Ilka aka Chiara Bautista is one of the illustration artists that inspired me to create my artwork, I loved her lines and type of drawing, deep and strong. I found her in Pinterest and then I did some research about her and I saw an artwork with syringes to that inspired me for my work.

Mona Hatoum is one of the artists I enjoyed and that gave me inspiration to work because of her pieces, it was more in the beginning that inspired me because I was gonna make a sculpture instead of a painting but then I changed my mind but anyways her works with metal influenced me to make an artwork with flipper that looks like metal but easier to sculpt.

In Pinterest I saw a page that was called “Instructables” that inspired me how to make artworks with foil paper because I never had donne before, they did with glue and foil paper but I got the idea from there, to draw things in the foil paper. Then I did with black paint and carved with a spoon to highlight the paper.

Georg Baselitz black and white prints inspired me in it grotesque way of draw, the black and white contrast leaded me to add the black paint to my work, I was only gonna carve not the foil paper but then I saw how good the contrast could be so I did it.
