btw I realized I forgot to mention on the "vi is dumb" headcanons in the last rambling but I'll be honest *sighs* the answer is: the fandom is classist.

For some reason people there think that if youre poor... youre dumb (it bothers me bc I grow up in a poor environment just like zaun and holy boy I feel like most people who speak about zaun stuff never rly meet poor people etc) Like Vi is SO FREAKING SMART, we clearly see her manipulate Caitlyn to get her out of the prison, she reacts very fast and thinks fast (her learning to use the gauntlets to propel herself around hellooo???) also her fastly making a plan with Cait to go face Ambessa and save Warwick. Sometimes people hold themselves too much in their own stereotypes and prejudices and this shows a lot in fandom spaces where the characters have nuance and are not the typical "good and bad" person.

It's extra infuriating to me again as a League fan because even early Vi is not presented as stupid. Per Interrogation 101 (2016)

Vi is impulsive, she's brash, and she doesn't think things through, but she isn't stupid. Pre-Arcane Vi is quite literally a masterful mechanic in her own right, responsible for repairing and maintaining her own Hextech. The reason Caitlyn picks her is left ambiguous (a question I will crave answers for my entire life: how did the Old Vi join the Wardens?), but it's clear that her extensive knowledge of Zaun AND the fact that she doesn't have a lukewarm IQ play into it.

She trusts Vi to tackle the situation Child of Zaun by herself because she knows that Vi is intelligent. And speaking of CoZ:

They were well into Season 1 production when this came out. It's the closest we have to a contemporary Vi Voice, and she most certainly is not stupid here calling out Urgot's prophet.

Even Arcane itself presents that even a young, teen Vi is very smart (just brash and prone to defaulting to her fists to solve problems, even to her own detriment). Caitlyn herself is impressed with Vi through Season 1 and it's meant to be emblematic of forcing Caitlyn to confront that she herself had some less-than-charitbale thoughts abt Zaunites. She knows enough in the abstract to believe they are people and deserve the same as Piltovans do, but she has never interacted so closely with one. Vi infuriates her, sure, and she doesn't always understand Vi's logic. But she quickly learns to trust that this girl ISN'T AN IDIOT.

(It's also the actual reason why "Jayce and Vi actively make each other stupider" is very funny. Standalone they are actually very similar people: driven by ideals but desperate to find a place, needing to feel like they contribute. They want to solve these grand problems they see with Piltover and Zaun, but they have these shortsighted pitfalls they fall into. The fact that they seem to be dumber together is because they exacerbate their own worst weaknesses!)

It's so fascinating too because they know enough to be upset that Caitlyn has this systemic power over Vi because of the class divide, but not enough to consider how their own interpretation of these dynamics comes down to classism. Something that Arcane itself tries to impress on its audience over and over again is that Zaunites are no less intelligent (or compassionate, or human) than Piltovans are. Hell, as I've mentioned many times before: Ekko literally exists because Riot noticed that almost all the Zaunites before him were either kind of brutish/dumb characters (Zac, Twitch, Mundo, etc) or were outlandish unempathetic villains like old Singed or some iterations of Viktor.

I feel you too bc while I didn't grow up poor-poor (until I was a teen, where things got weird), I did grow up around a lot of lower income folks in a community and county of people who are generally lower income/working class and where opportunities for young people are scarce unless you leave for the city. There is a tendency to think of people from where I am as backwards relative to the rest of my state, but in general I have found people to be relatively kind/have a desire to understand things, and that even amongst the folks I've known who were functional alcoholics etc they're so fucking smart in ways The Upper Class are not.

Vi may not have academic knowledge, she may not understand on a scientific level how specific things work, but she is certainly not fucking dumb. It's classism and again it feels like an extension of impressing gendered roles onto women who are masculine. Vi is the Man, so she must be aggressive and stupid. Caitlyn is the woman, so she must be clever and conniving. It feels like a very weird reflection of how I have seen some of my butch friends treated esp as they've embraced butchness and idk chief I DON'T LIKE IT
