This great video from last year's festival was posted a while ago, but we had some technical issues, so it was taken down. Now it's back and better than ever!

Washed Out "The Hardest Part" from Paul Trillo on Vimeo.
A trip and a fall down memory lane.
"The Hardest Part" is from Washed Out's new album "Notes From a Quiet Life" out June 28th.
This is the first official commissioned music video collaboration between a music artist and filmmaker made with OpenAI's Sora video model.
Moving on is the hardest part. This video is about learning to let go of a loved one and dreaming of them after they are gone. But memories are subjective, distorted mirrors of reality. For this, I leaned into the hallucinations and Sora's dream logic to explore memories that never existed. I was interested in the surreal qualities unique to Sora / AI that differentiate it from reality, the space between canny and uncanny, the strange details, the dream-like logic of movement that better represents this distorted mirror of memories.

A long time ago a metaphor I used to use for how I spent each day was like the 3D tube bonus level of Sonic The Hedgehog 2 (?). Running as fast as possible, trying to grab rings and dodge bombs, and get to the next checkpoint before getting disqualified. Now I think of each day more like a series of waterfalls. Each morning I stumble out of the jungle of my dreams, still groggy, and either ease myself into the river of the day's tasks or throw myself into the depths, depending on how high the sun has risen on the horizon. Then, as the day progresses, I hit a series of waterfalls; sudden interruptions to my flow that throw me into an entirely new body of work. The bad days are the ones I uselessly struggle to climb back up against the flow. The good days are the ones in which I stay present, and move with the rapids. Eventually, as the day comes to a close, the river deposits me back in the mouth of my dream jungle, where I surely flow down the inverted waterfalls of the parallel dimension we all visit when we sleep. Here are a series of mostly contextless moments from my last few tumbles down the rapids, at least the ones where I made sure to take a moment to float. 1 - Goodbye for now, bridge 2 - Co-working at Shack15 3 - Tauba Auerbach at SFMoMA 4 - Everything is permable 5 - Bird bath at Piedmont Springs 6 - Uni crème brûlée at Third Cousin w/ Third Place 7 - Cory Arcangel for Midnight Moment 8 - Whitney Biennial opening 9 - Dolphin diving meditation at the loft by Lauren Tosswill 10 - A waterfall diagram https://www.instagram.com/p/Cb9RuvNOSVl/?utm_medium=tumblr

Visited 3 local movie theaters all within a few blocks of my house in the last 3 days. Two are on my block. Another reason to love The Mission. Last night I went to the Roxie, which I think is the oldest? Or the oldest / independent (since Mission Theater is an Alamo Drafthouse). Saw a screening of OpenAI documentary, Artificial Gamer, about teaching a computer to play DOTA 2 - which is apparently one of the largest eSports games in the world, with a baffling $20 million prize. The house was packed with other YC alumni, many of which assumedly understand quite intimately the intricacies of this kind of project as was made clear during the QA. On Saturday we visited Other Cinema, which I'm been walking past and admiring their window video art since I moved in. I recently grabbed a flyer from their door and was pleased to note Andrew Shirley had a film that was screening for their Spirit Animals Program. Definitely the most DIY, the space reminded me of Spectacle in New York, and other microcinemas close to my punk house heart. I didn't take any photos of Mission Theater, but that one is massive. Went and saw Dune, which I appreciated for it's intimidating scarcity. Lots of big empty spaces and sparse sound design. I've managed to learn close to nothing about Dune up until now, and I'm planning on learning nothing new for the next two years until the next one. The day after the wedding, Simone made this powerful recovery soup. Everyone was laid out in Berkeley, except Max and Devin, who were staying not far away, in Bernal Heights. Like Ridgewood to Bushwick. We took them for a walk around our neighborhood, starting with the plant jazz across the street. Then up the hill, where 10 minutes from our doorstep it's practically vertical. It's wild that the number of houses that look like this in our neighborhood is uncountable. Normally I stop there, but this time we continued into the Castro District, where we stopped for cake. Thank you, Simone, for capturing this beautiful sidewalk art. Then on to Dolores park, where the party was on. We watched the sunset from there. By then, the rest of the crew was moving, so we descended upon the OG Mission Chinese, which has an awesome $30pp tasting menu if you gather up a table of 7+ and we're rolling 13 deep at that point. https://www.instagram.com/p/CVhcXiNlILf/?utm_medium=tumblr

*TW* Last photo is of the WTC *TW* My dad ( @twincharlie ) made a film for the 20th anniversary of a day neither of us had previously really spoken about, but that impacted both of our lives deeply. First half of the film is just kids being kids in Tribeca. Skating the banks. Playing punk music in our basement. Playing shoe golf on empty streets, late night. Second half includes footage from 9/11 that my father shot, while trying to account for his family. It's a personal snapshot into that moment, interspersed with a conversation between my father and I recollecting on this time, two decades later. Screening at Anthology Film Archives 32 Second Ave at 2nd St 9/11 @ 8:30p 9/12 @ 5pm Link in bio for tickets Descriptions of program by @anthologyfilmarchives WTC homemovie (2021, 34 min, digital) “WTC homemovie” is a disarmingly frank and refreshingly unadorned work in which father and son look back on a traumatic event that they experienced together but from the vantage of very different points in their lives. Like Ahearn’s DOIN’ TIME IN TIMES SQUARE (1991), it’s a portrait of growing up in a unique city, at a unique time – of striving to maintain a tenuous sense of normalcy within an anything-but-normal environment. TIMES SQUARE MOTOR HOTEL (1986-1992) (2020, 12 min, 8mm-to-digital) TIMES SQUARE MOTOR HOTEL is culled from previously unseen late-1980s 8mm video footage of the haunts of 8th Avenue and 42nd Street, shot by Ahearn during a time when he was living with his wife, artist Jane Dickson, and their kids above the neon lit street. It is an extension of his celebrated DOIN’ TIME IN TIMES SQUARE (1991). PLUS: A brand-new short piece by Jeff Preiss: a “trailer” for a forthcoming work conceived in response to “WTC homemovie” and based on Preiss and his own child’s experiences during that fateful moment in 2001. @thyme.space and I got a sweet apt for Sept - Nov right in The Mission in SF. Very excited about this next chapter. So that means our corner bedroom in Bushwick, Brooklyn is up for grabs. Here are a few basic photos, but if you wanna see a lot more photos and more details on the spot (like the huge kitchen, claw foot bathtub and rain shower, plant room, lounge, etc) just click the link in my bio or send me a DM. $1400/month + utilities, looking for 3-months starting 9/1, but that's pretty soon, so if you just wanna come to NY for the week or a month or whatever other range you have in mind, get at me. If you're looking for something longer term, we'll likely take the room back in Dec, but there will be other rooms available, so that's also an option. Pretty great crew you'd get to live with, like @amytiger and @isalexkoi (at Bushwick) https://www.instagram.com/p/CTDDhZelxMd/?utm_medium=tumblr

My last stint back in New York was explicitly to be present for the arrival on Rita Snow Norman, my sister @eveahe and @wednesdays4ever's new baby. Basically born with that hair. I've been enjoying a steady stream of baby photo updates since, but this is the one I got on my own, over @thyme.space's shoulder while she successfully got the baby to open her eyes for the only time during my visit. Rita was our grandmother's name, on my father's side. From stories and my memories, she was a great host. https://www.instagram.com/p/CSKpk6fhbnD/?utm_medium=tumblr

Went to the @cityreliquary for a cartoon screening with @thyme.space last time I was in New York. Highly recommend checking out an upcoming event they have listed on @domorewithfriends and hang out in the treehouse, grab a beer, get lost in the subway dust. Spent Sunday hanging out in Dolores Park making some new friends who run a plant marketplace ( @enterneverland ), a plant-based cheese company ( @sperofoods ), and a tiny home startup ( @jupeinc ) talking about mdma-assisted therapy and other assumedly typical SF brunch conversations. https://www.instagram.com/p/CSFJPI-JJvM/?utm_medium=tumblr

Did an interview with CBS about why Kunal and I are moving to San Francisco from New York to run Withfriends out here. ⠀ ⠀ Got to do the interview up on their studio roof, with this awesome view of the bridge. Sure is foggy out here. https://www.instagram.com/p/CSC8LjlhM6d/?utm_medium=tumblr

Back in New York, and of course I had to go pop in on one of @jmcaggregate's outdoor park shows. @sunkheaven was playing, who I had the honor of working with on @domorewithfriends over the pandemic and I was glad to finally be able to see in person. @ryanglos walked over with me, and I got to catch up with many old friends, most of which can't recognize me with mustache in the dark, while watching Jordan handling the cops for the inevitable noise complaint... Got to visit @grayareaorg again for the first time in almost two years. It's such a beautiful building, and an honor to be working with them via @domorewithfriends Had to commute in from Palo Alto, but it's not bad with this scooter @djkgamc has been renting. Takes about as long as trying to get to @pioneerworks from Bushwick, which I used to do daily for years. The program was Recombinant Cinema, a series a films shown in surround sound within a screen cube. Organized by Naut Humon, who is friends with Bob Bellerue and David Weinstein, so 👍🏻 by me. We've spoken in the phone a few times but glad to have finally met him in person. I love the scale of the train station at 22nd Street. I'd take the route just to feel being in that space again. There's a yellow corvette parked outside where I'm staying, glowing under the stars. (at Gray Area) https://www.instagram.com/p/CQsla64jxHG/?utm_medium=tumblr
