OCtober 2024 Day 6: Past

I'm doing two characters for this one too. For context: These OCs exist in the JJBA universe.

JOBAN FUJIO-DIAZ & CLEO ROSSI

Joban was born to a Mexican mother and Japanese father (who came from a wealthy family). He was born in Japan, where he, his parents, and many of his father's relatives in a large mansion known as the Fujio House.

He was loved dearly by his parents but that feeling was not shared with many of the others from the Fujio House. He was different. A half-blooded Japanese child born from a foreigner.

He heard their negative comments and whispers on the regular. He tried not to let them bother him but a child can also take so much. To make things worse, the few relatives that actually cared about him either died, disappeared,.... or stopped talking to him altogether...

At the age of 10, he and mother left the Fujio House for Oaxaca, Mexico. He's lived with his mom and her sisters ever since.

Cleo's past didn't involve as large of a family but it was definitely just as complicated (if not worse). It was just her, her mother, and her father in Sicily.

In the early years, things were fairly normal but as time went on, her mother's true colors came to light. She got irritated by the smallest thing. She made mean comments about Cleo's chubby body and her vitiligo condition. She got into frequent arguments with her husband. Some of them got physical.

After years of this treatment, Cleo's father decided to file for divorce. He had hoped to take Cleo with him but the court ultimately sided with the mother to the 12-year-old Cleo's horror.

The awful treatment didn't stop and her mother got lazy over the years, making Cleo take care of everything. The only thing Cleo looked forward to were the occasional visits she would have with her father, who encouraged her to try and remain strong.

Following one particularly bad fight, Cleo made up her mind to move out and leave. Of course, she knew her mom wouldn't just let her leave like that. So... Cleo did something drastic.

OCtober 2024 Day 4: Underappreciated OC(s)

I'm actually going to do two characters for this one sice I feel they're equally underappreciated.

MARIANNE LYNNE & CHELSEA WARREN

I don't talk enough about thise girls as i do with my other characters. My guess is that it's mostly due to them being the first child-age OCs that are part of the main cast.

Writing kids can be very tricky. They're not mega-intelligent but they aren't dumb either. Kids can be clever. I want them to feel as realized as their older acquaintances.

I've gotten a bit closer to achieving that as of late. There's still a lot to iron out and they've got plenty of potential.

Truth be told, Sonya is not my most recently created OC but she's the whose design I've finalized not too long ago. Still gotta draw her full body one day.

A young beauty who adores attention. Quite the unique appearance, no? Though... I don't believe she use to look like this before... In fact... weren't her eyes a different color last I saw her...? And her hair... and her... Well, it's probably nothing... right?

OCtober 2024 Day 1: Fav OC

I'll take any opportunity to talk about my boy, Joban!

JOBAN FUJIO-DIAZ

He's still technically in development but the more fleshed out he becomes the more I come to love his character. I think one of the things that makes Joban my favorite is how much of myself I see in him.

One example of this is the feeling of not belonging to a specific group or not really fitting into the multiple communities you're a part of. Joban, being Mexican-Japanese 🇲🇽🇯🇵, felt like an outcast amongst not only his Japanese family members but also amongst the other kids in Oaxaca. He was part of both communities but there was something that prevented him from being wholly accepted as he was. He was... different... and it greatly impacted how he saw himself.

It's not abnormal for artists and writers to use their personal experiences as inspiration for an OC. Joban is not the only character I've done this with but thinking about him going through the same kind of pains I've been through and growing into a happier person makes me a little hopeful for myself.

I just want my little guy to be okay. 🥹
