Tony Stark isn't stupid. Everyone knows that he is a genius in robotics, physics, and engineering. Less people know he's a genius with people, too. A social engineer, a prodigy in his field.

His whole childhood he had to rely on knowing what other people were thinking, what their intentions were. He can pick up social clues a mile away. He has learned to spot lies with closed eyes. So yeah, Tony fucking knows people.

And he isn't stupid. Of course he knows that Steve Rogers is in love with him. Even without him training to see through people he'd have picked up on it, because Steve is many things, but not subtle.

Steve doesn't parade it around, but he turns to Tony first at every hard decision, his eyes find Tony when there's immediate danger, and he laughs louder when Tony is the one telling the joke.

And Tony knows that Steve loves Bucky too, it's as clear as day. And maybe, probably, if he didn't know people as much as he did that wouldn't have been a problem. But he has studied people his whole life. His father, Obadiah, Fury, Natasha. Even those who try and hide their emotions and secrets, could never hide the one, critical truth: that everyone has a favourite. And that it's not Tony.

For Obediah it's himself. For Natasha it's Clint.

And if Tony could stand to look Steve in the eye longer than a second, he would have to see that for Steve it's Bucky. And Tony isn't stupid, so he doesn't look - he breaks up with Steve and avoids movie nights, gives Bucky a room without Steve asking for it, because he couldn't stand looking at Steve and knowing who is his favourite.

Because Tony knows people. So if he'd look, he'd know.

avengers lake day. They get a power boat. steve drives (“it’s kinda like a plane as far as controls, except i’m not about to die”). Thor is DELIGHTED to look at the fish. Bruce wears a life vest (he doesn’t know how to swim). Tony keeps doing reckless shit and standing in the boat at high speeds, so peter webs him in place in his seat. Nat keeps jokingly asking steve for his boating license (she has one. She has not volunteered that information. Steve keeps stalling out the boat and nat is deeply enjoying over exaggerating how jerky the stops are.) Clint knows nat has a boating license and keeps trying to scare steve by claiming to see lake patrol boats.
