Rihanna’s first day of 7th Grade!

Happy 11th Birthday to my amazing daughter. You came in a miracle and you’ve been a blessing every day of your life. I am so proud of you!

We are thrilled to introduce Rihanna Lyu! An international student we are hosting this year. She is going into 7th Grade at Madison’s school and will be living with us until May. I got to meet her Father today before taking Rihanna shopping for school supplies (school starts in just a few days!). This evening, we attended a social event for the kids and parents from her class (Thank you Amy Jackson for the photos) before returning home so she could finish unpacking her room. If you see us out and about, please take time to say hi and greet her. She’s very friendly and extremely bright. We feel blessed to have this opportunity to have Rihanna in our life and look forward to sharing our adventures over the next 9 months!

What is hard? As I sit in my kitchen this morning, sipping coffee from a mug, I realize that the mug has writing on it that I’ve not read in a rather long time. It says, “THE FIRST STARBUCKS STORE, PIKE PLACE MARKET, SEATTLE, WA” Although I was just in Seattle last week, I purchased this mug a few years back (it’s one of my all-time favorites). I worked for Starbucks for almost a decade, and always wanted to go to the very first location, but it wasn’t until six years after I left the company until I could get there. Many of my former colleagues would express their desire to visit the Coffee-chain Mecca, but would stress just how hard that would be to make the trip. I suppose I could have asked a friend in the Seattle area to purchase and mail me the mug. However, knowing I was there and got it myself makes me appreciate this mug that much more. In hindsight, I don’t remember it being difficult to obtain. But if I wanted to get another one this very instant, that would be kinda tough. Or maybe not. I have options. When you think about something you want today. If it seems hard to get, consider some alternatives to getting it and explore just how easy you can make reaching whatever goals you have on your heart.

The International Rose Test Garden in Portland’s Washington Park is so incredible. I’m really glad we didn’t miss this while we were there.
