malevolent podcast spoilers!!!

i've been rotating these designs in my head while relistening to malevolent, here's some notes on them:

-The King in Yellow, whole and divinely crowned

-Yellow, presents himself as a grandiose and scary god to counter how Arthur hurt him by constantly comparing him to John and threatening him (no he's not jealous, shhh), "bleeding" because he feels Something missing and thinks John will fill that void

-John, unaware of who he is but his nature remains (the vague crown), there is a subtle purple in his palette as he starts becoming something entirely his own, not "bleeding" because Arthur helps him keep it together

-John, unmasked, opening up and striving for humanity, no more secrets up his sleves (no sleeves lol), the yellow robe remains as he is still who he is but the color is more subdued, there is more purple. He has the same scars as Arthur, a reflection of the body they share.

-John, with a crown that can now be removed but he still wears, owning up to his past and trying to step closer to humanity

I don't think anyone "hurt" Kayne.

I think Kayne is his own problem and he is completely unwilling to look within at any point to realize that.

In a story that is so firmly about identity, about reframing oneself, about rediscovering the world with literally new eyes and finding value where you once could see nothing, Kayne is impatient and destructive and dismissive and has no interest in the hopes and dreams and concerns of others beyond a gag.

He wants "pure joy" because the rest of this reality is garbage, boring, stupid. It has rocks and dirt and air and all of that is a waste of time when you could just have the good stuff. He doesn't want to find beauty; he wants there to be nothing but beauty. He doesn't want to find value: everything has to be valuable.

Which is why nothing is beautiful to him and nothing is valuable to him, not even his own daughter. He wasn't rooting for Arthur because he's seen the others eventually fall: he was waiting for him to fail to prove he was just like them and not worth his time, which is why he ripped him apart in the end.

He is the soul of cynicism, the death of wonder, the great and destructive selfishness that ruins all in pursuit of 'perfection' and complete lack of appreciation, and for John who's come to love the world around him and for Arthur who's fought so hard to exist in that world...

Let's just say 'foil' doesn't even begin to cover it.

Which is not to say he's actually having a good time. He's not. It is frustrating. But it's a frustrating that will have no end by his own hand because he's trying to fix it exactly the wrong way.
