The NY3Ps: Cycling The 3 Peaks Challenge
THE ULTIMATE CHALLENGE.
…On foot. Never mind on two wheels!
A route covering 494 miles with a total ascent of 4,000 metres, climb and cycle between the three highest peaks in the UK: Ben Nevis, Snowdon and Scafell Pike in one ultimate challenge.
Are you ready to take on the 3 National Peaks Challenge but with a twist? Ditch the car and complete the National Three Peaks Challenge by bike. Cycle across the country to climb the three highest peaks of Scotland, England and Wales. Whilst there are no “set” rules in terms of routes, participants generally take 7-8 days to complete the challenge with (much-needed) stop-off points in between for rest and recuperation.
Tumblr media
WHY YOU SHOULD CYCLE THE 3 PEAKS CHALLENGE IN 2019.
Do it for charity. Do it to break records. Do it for the experience.
There are an abundance of reasons why we all need a challenge. Cycling the 3 Peaks will push you to your limits and give you the opportunity to create life-long memories along the way. Choose your starting point from North to South or vice versa and, absorb the stunning British scenery along the way. Highlights include the rugged rocks of Snowdon and the breathtaking panoramas across the Lake District.
Tumblr media
PREPARATION IS VITAL.
A high level of fitness is required to complete this challenge. To ensure that you are fully prepared for the challenge ensure that you:
Undergo regular cardio exercise to build stamina and increase strength across the core muscles you’ll be using (cycling AND trekking are very strenuous activities).
Plan your route and mark it on a map, making sure to schedule in your stop-offs and accommodation.
Invest in good walking boots (for those parts in between pedalling) that are comfortable and sturdy: you’ll be climbing the 3 highest peaks in the U.K after all!
Have your bicycle prepared as you’ll be cycling large stretches (potentially exceeding 100 miles a day) and will need to be sure that everything is in good working order e.g. tires and brakes.
Keep equipment lightweight. To complete the challenge you’ll need a variety of things from safety gear to snacks; make sure everything can be comfortably carried on your bike.

Why should I consider corporate walks as a team activity for my employees?
Corporate walking activities are a great way to keep your employees healthy in both body and mind. Physical, mental and social health can all be improved by increasing physical activity in employees. And some pretty impressive statistics back this up. For example, did you know that taking a brisk walk for 30 minutes over five days can reduce the risk of heart disease or stroke by up to 35%? Type 2 diabetes can also be reduced by up to 40% and cancer up to 30%. Regular daily exercise such as walking also does wonders for people's mental health. Walking regularly can reduce the risk of dementia or depression by up to 30%. And can also reduce symptoms of anxiety and help aid better sleep. There are a whole host of other benefits to corporate walking activities as well. It is a relatively easy activity to organize and carry out. And as such, its uptake amongst employees is likely to achieve at least some level of success. Because no special equipment is required, unlike other certain types of exercise, it can be fit in easily during the workday. And is a fairly inclusive activity as well. Studies suggest that if you make an effort to make your workforce physically active to some degree, your workforce overall will take an impressive 27% less sick days per year. So the question is if you aren’t keeping your workforce physically active, can you afford to suffer these higher levels of absence? What makes the North Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge the perfect corporate walk? We believe that the North Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge makes for the perfect corporate walk for a number of reasons.
Provides your employees with a new challenge different from their daily work schedule. Giving them the opportunity to get into the Yorkshire Dales, take in some breathtaking views and get some exercise
It is an inclusive activity where most of your employees will be able to take part. It is not limited to certain ages and abilities unlike other sports and your team can go at a pace comfortable for themselves. Unless of course, you decide to make things more challenging and competitive by introducing time limits!
Your employees feel a sense of accomplishment when they finish the Three Peaks Challenge and are awarded a certificate to acknowledge their hard work
It is a safe activity, led by experienced mountain leaders who are always available throughout the duration of the journey for help and support. Support vehicles are also available between each peak. So employees feeling out of their comfort zone can rest assured that someone will always be on hand for support
It is an affordable corporate activity, costing £85 per head for a group of 15 people

What can I expect from a corporate walk as part of the North Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge?
Corporate walking as part of the North Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge will involve tackling the climbs of Pen-Y-Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough. Your corporate team will be led by experienced mountain leaders beginning in the village of Horton-In-Ribblesdale. Over the expected twelve hours completion time, you will make ascent of 1381 meters and experience breathtaking scenery of the North Yorkshire Moors along the way. In total, your group will have walked 24 miles. Please be aware that corporate walks as part of the North Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge are only available between April and October each year. As mentioned, corporate walks as part of the North Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge involve climbing the three greatest peaks of the North Yorkshire Moors. Peak 1 is Pen-Y-Ghent and begins in the village of Horton-In-Ribblesdale. You will climb counter clockwise up the mountain, following the road to Brackenbottom Farm, turning left before the farm as you pass the church. Peak 2 is Whernside and begins in Ribblehead. Once leaving here, you will begin to head left towards the B6255 and follow the path at the side of the viaduct (but not crossing it) You will then continue North across the railway line, following the route towards Whernside. As you head towards Ingleborough, you will then continue along the ridge and follow the B6255. Taking you towards the direction of the Tan Hill Inn. Peak 3 is Ingleborough and begins at Whernside at the Old Hill Inn. Following the road to Ribblehead you will cross the style to the right. And then follow a marked path indicated by a cairn on one side. To make your way back to Horton-In-Ribblesdale you will then need to retrace your steps 200 meters. And head off to the right side of the ridge over a number of styles, eventually leading you to a lane. Once here, you will need to head left towards Horton-In-Ribblesdale. Once again passing over a number of different styles until you finally reach your destination.

What Are The Health Benefits Of Hiking?
Hiking might not sound like the most attractive activity in the world, but it’s one of the most accessible, enjoyable and scalable activities that you can engage in. If you’re thinking about going hiking, have you considered the Yorkshire Three Peaks? North Yorkshire 3 Peaks is dedicated to providing excellent guided tours of the Yorkshire Three Peaks and the surrounding moorland. There’s also the North Yorkshire 3 Peaks Challenge. All 3 peaks climbed in 12 hours, around 24 miles of undulating paths and beautiful scenery.
Hiking is one of those activities that has a slightly negative reputation to some, much like cycling. Too boring and pedestrian to be a ‘real sport’, too relaxed for exercise fanatics, and too difficult for people who don’t do it regularly, especially when they’re expected to keep up with a more experienced group. You also have to deal with whatever weather is happening, whether that’s blistering heat, torrential rain, or freezing cold. Depending on the season, you may have to also deal with mud, flies and ice. Why would anybody do this?
The answer is simple. On a good hike, you’re getting healthier, smarter and fitter with every step. Here’s just some of the benefits that come with hiking:
Physical Benefits
It goes without saying that you should exercise if you have the physical capacity to do it, and hiking is a good intermediary between strolls down the park and intensive workouts. Depending on the incline you’re walking on, a fit person can burn well over 500 calories an hour, without putting the strain on your joints that comes with more intensive exercise like weight lifting.
It isn’t just weight loss too. By hiking, you’re slowly lowering blood cholesterol and blood pressure, which can reduce the risk of Type 2 Diabetes, heart diseases and Strokes. Regular exercise, including hiking, also increases your body’s sensitivity to essential hormones like insulin and improves glucose tolerance, which is important for Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetics.
Mental Benefits
Without going all hippy on everybody, hiking is therapy for a lot of people who deal with mental conditions like depression and anxiety. Being out in the wilderness, far away from the problems of society and urban life, helps you disconnect from them, and allows you to experience the joys of life. Hiking present mental wellness benefits for everybody: the problem-solving processes that come with hiking keep your brain active, and the isolation from the hustle and bustle of modern living allows you to de-stress.
