so i was going to write out all of my thoughts and feelings about the finale of cobra kai and i realized how vastly different some of us are watching this show.

for example: i firmly believe that the main character of the series has always been johnny lawrence, that we as an audience were always meant to root for him, and that he was always meant to have a redemptive happy ending. now, sure, there are some supporting characters that have large arcs within the show but the main narrative focus of cobra kai is johnny lawrence's story. if you disagree with that basic premise, we are going to have some major disagreements about the analysis of the show.

a case can be made that daniel is also the main character but i would still disagree because the show sets us up with johnny's story literally from the beginning. in season 1, we're introduced to johnny first. we follow johnny before we follow daniel and, for the most part, we already know daniel's story. we know far more about daniel larusso than johnny lawrence going into cobra kai and the point is to learn about johnny (and, by proxy, everyone else in his orbit).

so for me, i found the ending to deliver more than i could hope for but that's because i've been rooting for johnny from the beginning. if he had failed, if he had gotten nothing, if cobra kai did not return in his image, i know some fans would have been happy with that and felt it more appropriate but i'm so happy that it didn't end that way.

they are the only adults in this whole show who genuinely care about the kids' wellbeing. like please they are so compassionate and kind and you can totally see where sam and miguel get it from.

amanda taking care of tory when she found out about her family situation even after everything that went down with her and sam?

So, yeah, that night in the parking lot, December 19, 1984, was the single worst moment of my life. But what hurt even more than being choked out was you abandoning me.

absolutely still sitting here thinking about johnny and kreese's scene together because the vulnerability in johnny saying to kreese that he was ABANDONED and how hard the years were after his loss -- not because of the loss itself but because he felt like he had no one, not even himself because the person he loved and idolized straight up abandoned him for losing. like. like i didn't think we'd get there. i didn't think he'd ever get to say those words to kreese.

but what really gets me was the moment where kreese goes to comfort johnny and johnny bats his hand away at first. that immediate refusal of comfort and love and affection from the person he's been trying so hard to get it from all of these years. that gut reaction from him to deny himself what he needs most from kreese. only to finally give in and have kreese say "i'm so sorry, son" when he does.

like how cathartic that must feel for johnny. how gut wrenching it must feel for kreese. he loved that boy and he did so wrong by him and turned his champion into a broken, wilted thing instead of building him up when he was so torn down.

how are you not all insane over that?????
