johnny is such a complex character in every aspect, every line, every action is so symbolic and full of meaning to his character–from the outset he has pre existing mental illness festering in him with his delusions (”god said he would skin me alive”), with his disorganized, rambling monologues (”shine your light on this, motherfucker! i got plans, baby. hang your dark cloud over your dirty old town. the end of the world is over.”), with his impulsivity to the damaging degree as he moves to the city with no plans or goals beyond making it, with his inability to conceptualize people as people who have their own feelings and beliefs and flaws in favor of putting them on pedestals (”saint jimmy”/”shes a saint”); hes so vulnerable in his mental state, in dealing with the death of his father and all the complicated emotions that come with grief, and rage, and betrayal, and not having a family, in dealing with his deeply personal and societal and political disillusionment, and in the psychosis creeping up on him from his first lines. the threads were already loose, tunny gave them the final pull to unravel johnny as he left

and the show knows johnnys complexities. every action is so intentional, one of two moments of stillness in the entire show is during when its time–johnnys mind is quiet for a moment, he feels clearly for a moment, how he expresses himself clearly and simply with quiet and without the markers that represent his head in its fucked up state; the other moment of stillness is after letterbomb, after whatsername rips him away from himself and beats the truth into him–then its a shocked kind of silence, but still the same quiet that comes with johnny knowing what the truth is; he makes the decision to sell his guitar to go back to the one damned place he swore hed never return to, his guitar like an extra limb, that saw him through jingletown, through mom and brad, through crawling his way out of suburbia, through his relationship with whatsername, through his drug addiction to which he is so plainly and painfully psychological predisposed, through his subsequent sobering up and growing up and rebirth, the instrument through which he has a voice and he sells it to go back to jingletown. all intentional actions that speak volumes about his psychology, his vulnerability, his growth.
