Varriano’s figurative and portraiture paintings
Varriano’s figurative and portraiture paintings display an exceptional talent for delivering unabashed proclamations of the human condition.  For Varriano, the blinding beauty of the subject matter is made more exquisite and whole by the dark and hidden material that lies beneath. It is always the shadows, materially and metaphorically, that allow one to see and experience the light.
Varriano’s command of abstract oil painting is otherworldly. He gives his audience a masterful outpouring of explosive forms, shapes, and textures counterbalanced by stark discipline, containment, and restrain. Varriano handles paint and the transmission of ideas with exceptional “Grace,” leading one to conclude the higher worlds he captures are his natural habitat.  Rather than shock and awe, Varriano delivers only awe.

American
Varriano was born into a family of artists and artisans. His father Angelo was a brilliant abstract sculptor and inventor. Both his maternal and paternal uncles expressed considerable artistic prowess. And his paternal grandfather Giovanni was an exceptionally talented artisan who spent much of his later years creating large, classically proportioned vases inlaid with exquisitely intricate mosaics.

Keeper of Secrets - Figurative oil painting
John Varriano gives us a front-row seat to familiar places that may be seen in new and unfamiliar ways.
Bars can be very interesting and complex social environments, especially high-end bars that cater to the wealthy. Many of the patrons make all sorts of deals and transactions at these places. The flowing alcohol acts as a lubricant that lowers inhibitions and allows people to take chances that they normally would not engage in.

Nigronius Pontificus - Figurative oil painting
John Varriano presents us with a well-dressed gentleman who is in the act of making a point to some fellow investors. One might say that he is pontificating, thus the Latinized name for the painting. Because his fellow
businessmen are outside of the scope of the scene, we feel as though the protagonist is actually speaking directly to us.
His impeccable suit, bow-tie and matching handkerchief give a hint of his Ivy League status. He is clearly well groomed with sparkling glasses and nicely combed hair. That pointing finger and open mouth let us know that he is passionate about his ideas. His left hand is hanging comfortably from the bar, and we get the sense that just a few moments ago his back was turned and he has just spun around rapidly to engage the crowd with his brilliant thoughts. He is clearly very much at home here.

JOHN VARRIANO
Tumblr media
This painting is a brilliant example of John Varriano “Crystalism,” and a penetrating psychological exposé into the interaction between artist and model.
Of great interest is that the connection we feel between the two is not so much a result of the facial expressions or physical interaction of the bodies but the intense interactions of the forms and spaces. One of the profound mysteries of visual art is that science (in this instance psychology), almost exclusively defined within the realm of words, can be penetrated abstractly by this subtle manipulation of form and space.

Is one of a series of paintings John Varriano has produced that centers around the Archangels of the Armageddon. If these are the beings that will come to our rescue in the end of days, there is hope for the human race after all. The other-worldly power of this magnificent painting is expressed through an extraordinary use of color and shape. Varriano exhibits an uncanny ability to give us a work that is at once powerful in motion, yet balanced and calm. This is abstraction rooted in the classical ideal, and well worth a look.
