hey real sorry since this has probably been asked like, a million times. But I was wondering a few things, like, is it okay to try and learn how to draw in your art style? And also, how do you even start to draw like you do?
For example, I've been trying to learn art since I was young and I love it, I do! But I can never manage to make myself just, sit down and start drawing? I feel like I have to almost force myself to and then I just don't want to work on them anymore...
my art style is something that works for me, You can certainly use me as a reference, but the best way to do art is to find a way to draw that's tailored to your weaknesses and strengths, you can you use someone specific as a jumping board, but once you start deviating from that path, lean into it, that's where style comes from
as for motivation, that's something I can't give, but the desire to improve and visualize my ideas is what keeps me motivated most days
that said, maybe find something you can play in the background, something that doesn't rely too much on visuals like a podcast or a video essay
I tend to do my best work in silence before bed, but everyone's different

Hey! I just wanted to say thank you so much for making the art you do- I found your blog in 2019 or 2020 when I was really starting to get into Batman and I found so much comfort in the story you’ve created! I actually ended up naming myself “Jay” after your interpretation of Joker, as I came out as nonbinary around the same time. Your work really shaped my early teenage years and I can’t thank you enough for making me feel seen at such a difficult time. I’m in college now (art student- whoops) and I still come back to your blog whenever I’m having a hard day. Thank you for all the joy, and for the name <3
this is one of the most beautiful asks I've received, when you do something for a long time you start wondering how it may influence ppl, so I'm glad the effect was positive! congrats on going to college!! I hope you find even more joy and success in life!

what do you personally think helped you improve in digital art and animation? ur progress has been amazing to watch seriously!! ur art feels so much fun!
honestly?
a lot of observation
a lot of figure studies
not letting my brain turn off when I draw
if something looks wrong I always fix it, and if I spend too long trying to fix it, I take a break and come back to it later
references (when needed)

Honestly I’ve never cared for superheroes or anything whatsoever. Don’t know why, just didn’t interest me. (Minus the Teen Titans show from CN but that had beast boy to lure me in)
That said…. AUUUUGH your art your art your ARRRT. I’m so glad that Batman has become a cultural osmosis thing so I can understand your world better without having to read comics or anything. I m sorry I don’t know how to convey this well but like. You’ve taken this thing I know about and only have a passing “oh yeah I like that one show and a couple movies” interest in and made it something I’m OBSESSED with. I am rotating these guys in my mind.
Im. Sincerely sorry if any of this comes off badly. Genuinely. I just really like your stuff
this was lovely to hear! and believe it or not, your relationship with superheroes was very similar to mine! my favorite DC related things were OG Teen Titans and the 1970's Superman movies, both were super influential to me, but I didn't get very deep into comics until I saw the Lego Batman Movie in 2017
since then, a lot of my work tries to channel the energy of the things that pilled in the most, cape comics have a lot of room for emotional and colorful storytelling that doesn't always get filled up and I wanted to take advantage of that, I'm really glad to hear that I've managed to pull you in too lol

How do you color? It’s gorgeous. On the speedpaints it somehow looks like you shift colors and paint many areas at the same time. Is there a specific digital tool you use
I use the lasso-fill tool to "paint" and sometimes shift the hue or "color balance" if I need too but that's all usually

have you ever played mouthwashing? ik it's not dc related but the art is super cool and kind of an inverse to yours. i js want people to play the game it's soooooooooo good
oh I definitely know of it and if there's one game i have an interest in playing this year it's probably that one even if it is mostly story
love some messy human story telling
and yeah i'd say it is kind of the tonal opposite to my work but in the way black and white are both "colors" lol

I absolutely LOVE your DC AU!!! It’s legit the best interpretations of the characters I have EVER SEEN. 😭😭 adore it.
Anyways, maybe I missed it in your blog, but do you have a head cannon for how your Jay/Joker and Batman met, and when Joker’s infatuation began?
Again, love your work!
there may be some stuff on my old @ask-jokeboi blog about that but most of it will be retconned pretty dramatically in @rogues-comic
I made this for myself mostly but the planned timeline looks something like this:

Oml I’ve been following your blog for YEARS (new blog now, but I’ve been here since 2020 I believe at this point haha), and just got to say I adore your artwork and everything you do - very inspiring art- wise haha. You’re basically what got me into DC lol.
Anyway, do you have any speed paints you could post on tumblr or even just any tips you have on how to draw people/faces? I always try to improve my art and am getting pretty, good, but struggle SO hard with the first sketch when it comes to stylized people and expressions. Any help/tips/pics you can give would be so cool, as I admire your artwork and style so much
youtube
nice! can't believe it's been five years since then lol
and here's an old one from my Youtube, though it uses a symmetry tool which I wouldn't use these days
Honestly, faces are one of the hardest things to draw because subtle changes can make a really big difference, it will take you VERY long time to get a good grasp of them, almost as long as it takes to get good at backgrounds, or rendering or anatomy, but it's mostly a balance between rotating a 3D shape (the head), proportions and studying ppl's expressions
my most important notes i'd say are:
1. expressions are never almost never symmetrical, there's usually an eyebrow raised a little more, a slightly lopsided smile, ect. ect. 2. noses are difficult but thankfully not too necessary and will get easier to draw the better you get at art 3. take 3D space into consideration, the tilt of someones head can drastically change how an expression is read 4. dimples, nose wrinkles, crows feet and forehead lines make all the difference when it comes to subtle expressions, don't be afraid to use them even if it seems to age your characters 5. PRACTICE, look at people's faces, examine their emotions, feel how your own face stretches and squishes when it moves, a good example is how Disney and Warner Brothers animators used mirrors to draw expressions, even for characters that looked nothing like themselves:

i love your work so much and ever since i found out about you you've been a huge inspiration; your dc AU is so interesting to explore! i love it a lot and your artworks are so unique :) on another topic, is it okay to ask if you can share any tips on how you colour? your colours rlly seem to pop out and complement each other yet also manage to not strain my eyes and i think that's really fascinating, so i'm just curious on how you make that work! and also, how many years of art did it take for you to get to this stage in your artworks? anatomy-wise and everything ^^ it's really cool hehe
thank you! I've been drawing since I was around 5 so a few decades lol, that said, most of my current skills come from recent practice
as far as my colors go, It's all about balancing contrast, brighter colors are used as centerpieces and highlights while low saturation colors are used for everything else, that way you can have colors that really pop without it being too overbearing
I also just use a LOT of colors, getting the hang of that takes a deeper understanding of color theory and stuff but it's mostly just exaggerating colors that would be in a scene naturally or focusing on value rather than color alone

As someone who's been trying to get into the Batman comics, do you have a recommendation of what to start with?
you can with start with anything that looks interesting to you going off the cover and title alone
Batman comics are (mostly) episodic but change with time and vary WILDLY in tone, so a "good" place to start only depends on what kinds of stories you like and which characters you're interested in
since I like Batman & the Joker most of my recommendations will include them in some way:
if you're interested in lighter and sillier stories and don't mind some outdated writing Batman #1 is a VERY fun place to start, these stories also include Robin more consistently if you're interested in Bruce as a character and don't mind some pretty messed up horror the New 52 explores his character with a lot of depth if you want to learn more about Batman's main villains, the Batman Confidential comics have a few different stories focusing on some of the most iconic ones, it will give you a good sense of what their personalities and core traits are like, as well as their relationships with batman if you want iconic, self contained, stories and GORGEOUS art, many books by artist Tim Sale and writer Jeph Loeb are fantastic, I also recommend the Superman stories they've done together if you'd like to see Batman as part of an "odd couple" pairing, the Worlds Finest comics are a lot of fun, these pair him up with Superman and their personalities bounce off each other very well, this series also has a modern version currently in print apart from that, Batman comics tend to have these things called "runs" which are teams of artists who work together on a certain number of issues, I already mentioned two of them, but most of my favorites were done in the 70's & 80's like the Moench/Jones run and the Grant/Breyfogle run, and again, you can pretty much start these anywhere you want
also, as if you didn't have enough to choose from, here are a few of my random faves:
Batman: Kings Of Fear
Sleighride by Paul dini
Batman: Dark Prince Charming
Batman: Last Knight On Earth
Batman #608 (Anarky's Debut)
Batman Adventures
Batman: Year 100
Harley Quinn: RWB #14,
Batman /superman #52 ect. ect. ect.
to cap this off though, I would stay away from things like The Killing Joke or The Dark Knight Returns until you read other things more suited to your tastes, they'll certainty be pushed on you and are iconic for specific reasons but aren't necessarily the best Batman has to offer (IN MY OPINION)

If you can name one, what’s your biggest writing pet peeve with Batman as a character?
Usually I would go off on a rant right about now but I've decided to channel all that frustration into making things I think are good (to me)
though if you want the run down on my nitpicks please see this post and this post

hi! sorry if this is rude but did you delete that one post of your joker design and the inspirations of it that you used on the "crush on you" animation? i really liked that drawing but i cant find it anywhere
oh I think I know what you're talking about, it's probably somewhere around here but a lot of that stuff ended up on twitter instead of my tumblr tbh, if I can re-find it I can put it up here too
