The phrase “salt-spray test” describes an accelerated corrosion test that is applied to various products and materials to assess their performance in a salty environment.
Usually, a saline solution is sprayed on the material to be tested once it is placed inside a chamber.
It is significant to note that, given that the materials are exposed to a very high concentration of sodium chloride (typically 5% NaCl), many of the natural variables that cause corrosion are not taken into account in this test. The concentration of salt in this mixture is alarmingly high, as it is rarely found in outdoor applications.

The following parameters are used when conducting salt-spray tests:
The test samples are placed into a chamber at a predetermined temperature (usually 35ºC) and misted or finely sprayed with a 5% sodium chloride saline solution.
The duration of the test can range from 24 to 1000 hours. Throughout the trial, the samples are maintained at a constant temperature and moisture content. To ensure that the saline solution covers the entire surface, each sample is also rotated at regular intervals.
Oxidation of the sample’s surface is the test’s outcome. The number of hours needed before the sample’s surface exhibits oxidation for the first time is measured. The numer of hours before 5% of the surface oxidizes is one of the other techniques.

India’s Journey Towards Green Mobility: The First Breakthrough
During an interview with Press Trust of India, Nitin Gadkari this week, the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, emphatically declared to transform India into a green economy to promote environmentally friendly mobility by completely eliminating both the petrol and diesel engine vehicles. However, the minister declined to indicate a definite timeline and milestone for attaining such an ambitious target; though he appeared confident about the wave of changes that are expected to happen over the next five to seven years.
This idea stemmed from the fact that India spent close to US$17.00 billion on Crude Oil imports last year as a result of which, it is incumbent to develop alternate fuel for sustainability and self-reliance towards our avowed goal of AtmaNirbhar Bharat by promoting the use of biofuels to allow India to end its dependence on crude oil imports.

The Union Minister further proposed a reduction of GST on hybrid vehicles to five per cent and flex engines to 12 per cent, an initiative which is currently under active consideration by the Finance Ministry to give a fillip to the production and use of such vehicles.

FAME: India On Its Way to Net Zero Under New Scheme
Ministry of Heavy Industries, India is implementing an ambitious Scheme under Phase II for Faster Adoption of Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric vehicles in India known as FAME with a total outlay of Rs 10’000 crores.
The objective of this scheme is to support and expand manufacturing, sales and use of EVs and Hybrid vehicles in India for public as well as private transportation in addition to creating a robust infrastructure of charging stations across India.
Under this scheme, upfront reductions in the purchase price of the EVs are provided as an incentive to lure the buyers into adopting of this emerging technology. Besides the Government is also providing Production Linked Incentives to automotive OEMs with a budgetary outlay of almost Rs: 26’000 crores to support domestic manufacturing and distribution of EVs.

With a view to boosting manufacturing and sales of EVs, the Government has reduced GST from 12% to 5% on EVs
