This is what a lot of big tentpole movies are missing, I think. They've got the spectacle but it's a dead rush to get from one sequence to the next. Nowhere to pause and sit with the characters or ratchet up the tension or flesh out the sets. It's like they don't have the confidence that they can make those smaller moments engaging, so then whole thing ends up feeling like kind of a samey slapdash blur.
Thinking a lot of things in the vein of "star wars would be so good if it was good" and I think the one thing star wars is really missing is space to breathe. Star wars as a franchise is really afraid you'll be bored and so throws spectacle at you non stop, which ironically will make you bored of spectacle. The movie that's best liked, empire strikes back, has a lot of space to breathe. Luke is stuck on Dagobah with Yoda and they get to actually talk. About the Force, about the empire, about the past and about Luke himself. We have the space for that. Leia and Han are stuck in the millennium falcon and get to develop their romance. Another fan favorite, Andor, has many scenes that are just two characters talking, takes time showing emotional impact and isn't afraid to shy away from spectacle. What most star wars lacks in my opinion, is the bravery to stand still.
#watching andor then rogue one then new hope all in a row is a great example of this contrast#andor and new hope (and presumably empire and roj too although i have not rewatched them yet) both know how to take their time#give us the little moments!! we long for the little moments!!!#filmmakers i promise that the quiet makes the storm so much more electric#andor#star wars
