How long have you studied Korean? Can you give me any advice? (-:

I started properly September 2012 but had done a little bit before then too. Umm, is there advice about anything in particular you want? Like grammar or whatever?

For the first 2 years I was learning it as a class. Personally I’m not very self-disciplined, so the structure that actual lessons forced on me helped me get up on my feet and to a decent understanding to be able to carry on by myself (unlike the disaster that was me trying to self-teach Japanese and giving up as soon as I hit Kanji). 

I was also actually in Seoul itself as part of my second year of uni studying at Yonsei University Korean Language Institute between August 2013 and July 2014, and that has to be the absolute biggest help to me so far, but of course that’s not necessarily possible for everyone…

It’s of course also very helpful to have actual Korean friends who you can talk to in Korean for practise and who can also correct any major mistakes you make. You can also pick up a lot of vocab and slang and stuff just through that too. I’m not very good at memorising things like vocab and grammar just through cramming, so using them myself and seeing them in use by others and seeing how actual Koreans use them helps me a lot.

If you can’t do actual lessons then I definitely recommend TalkToMeInKorean.com. Their audio lessons and videos are always very very useful and will help structure your learning some more too. If you don’t have any Korean friends either I know they have some things to help connect you with Koreans. There are also a few other apps and websites that help yo connect to native speakers like Lang8 and HelloTalk, but I haven’t really used them myself.
