This whole thing makes me cry. I have been following Callum Keith Rennie on instagram. That man made his most recent acting role one to remember. He went out with a bang. Commander Rayner is thoughtful, insightful, passionate, he sticks to his ideals, he sees the very best in Star Fleet in his own way that is informed by pain, he uses that pain to be the very best Captain he can be. His awards? He might view them as trinkets. What does that tell the audience about him? He is brave. He is courageous. He represents the very best of Star Fleet and the Federation. He sees people and he really knows them. It might take him time to be close to them, but I wouldn't be surprised that when you earn his respect, he will fight and support those he respects with his very last breath. And who knew Captain Rayner the best? Callum Keith Rennie. He is an incredible actor. Starfleet Medal of Valor is an award given to officers for the display of devotion to their duty and the show of valor. Captain Jonathan Archer earned this one. His accomplishments: Considered by historian John Gill, as the "greatest explorer of the 22nd century," Archer is widely credited with saving Earth from the Xindi and paving the way for the founding of the United Federation of Planets. He went on to become one of the Federation's earliest presidents. The Grankite Order of Tactics. Captain Kirk for brilliant tactical maneuvers. Jean-Luc Picard as a brilliant tactician. Commander Rayner earned that as well. I am getting a degree in creative writing. I could only try to create such a complex and inspiring character. But it's the actor who makes the people we as writers live. They walk in their shoes. They know how their character reacts in the situations they are put in. And in Commander Rayner's case? Callum Keith Rennie knew Rayner well enough to know that Captian Michael Burnham would be the woman Rayner would fall in love with.
Because he knew Rayner far more than a writer ever could. Callum lived in Rayner's head. He knew the most logical event would be that Burnham would earn his respect and admiration. She would then earn his love. That love might burn with the heat of a thousand suns in the beginning but it would grow to a deep connection. In a universe where the writers gave up their story to the actors who make the characters live the epiloue would have been this: Rayner and Burnham seeing their kids off to the Academy and hoping they could live up to the legends the legacy of their parents. But knowing their kids would be equally as brilliant and sharp. Callum really did that. That was a performance to be epically proud

Star Trek: Discovery I Sometimes life, itself, is meaning enough. How we choose to spend the time that we have. Who we spend it with. You. Book. And the family I found in Starfleet. On Discovery.
