Need some Vitamin Sea? Head to one of these Michigan beaches near Muskegon to really relax for the weekend.
Laketown Beach
youtube
Location:  6710 142nd Ave Holland, MI 49423
Great for: Solitude (away from the crowd)
Located in Holland, the Laketown Beach is the least crowded in the area. The beach is great if you are looking for some quality time with your family or that special someone. You can choose whether you want to take the stairs down or walk towards the sandy bath. If you choose the stairs to be sure you are not wearing any fancy shoes, it can take an extra pound off from your body. Most people are afraid to use the stairs, but if you need that workout, try it for a change. But don’t let that discourage you from going into this off the beaten path beach location. The area peaceful, in certain days you can even have the beach all to yourselves. It’s quiet, peaceful, and a small beach with free parking. Don’t forget to bring some food and drinks to keep you hydrated.

The sand pretty much lay flat into the water, dogs love running around its shore and you will not worry that they might go in too deep into the lake. Let your dog mingle with other dogs and let them socialize. There’s a lot of room for them to run around the beach, not many beaches will allow your dog off the leash. Fantastic Facts about Detroit Few People Know About
Along with Detroit having some great breweries around town, there’s a lot that the city has hiding. But finding those things isn’t hard if you know where to look and have a real interest in the city’s history.
“Speramus Meliora; Resurget Cineribus”
No, it’s not a spell from a Harry Potter book, but that is the official Detroit motto in Latin. In English, it translates to “We hope for better things; it shall rise from the ashes.” Beautiful isn’t it? But what is even greater than their motto is their colorful and revolutionary past. Detroit started some of the most important innovations in the country.
The creation of a Private Number
The invention of the telephone in the 1800s is also the invention of telephone numbers but the same goes with party lines. Because numbers are just that, general numbers for those who own a telephone at that time. In the past, a call needs to go through an operator before reaching to a specific person. A party line or a third party is very much common during the old days. But Detroit helped to change all that, they are the first city to assign a specific phone number of an individual. They cut out the unnecessary party line.
The first concrete highway is in Detroit
Detroit has a long reputation for automobiles and even in transportation innovation. Named as the Motor City of the US, Detroit is the home of the first four-way-three color traffic light and the first mile of concrete highway. The highway is the first urban freeway in the world. In 1909, the Wayne County Road Commission built the country’s first mile of concrete highway in Detroit. The road expands at Woodward Avenue between the 6 and 7-mile roads in the city. Detroit also houses the first traffic tunnel between Canada and the US, the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel.
Also, the Ambassador Bridge is located in Detroit, the busiest single border of the two countries. Another fascinating fact about Detroit is the location. Some Canadians need to drive north to go to the US, the only major city in the US that is located north of Canada.
  Detroit really loves liquors
A Detroit pharmacist named James Vernor created a new drink; he was then called to serve during the Civil War in 1862. He stored his new liquor invention in an oak cask and when he came back after his service, he found out that the keg transformed the drink. The drink was later named as Vernors Ginger Ale. During the Prohibition, an estimated 75% of illegal liquor was smuggled using the waterways of Detroit to supply the country’s need for the intoxicating drinks.
The city sits on a large salt mine
Detroit boasts of at least 1,400 acres of salt mines right under the city. The salt mine is older than the automotive industry in Detroit. In fact, it is older than the dinosaurs. Salt deposits were created about 400 million years ago during the Devonian Period; a time where the fish were started to grow legs to migrate onto land. Ancient oceans that were evaporating during those times created the massive deposits of salt in Detroit. The Detroit Salt Company mines more than 100 miles of road for salt. The impressive sight of salt can be found at 1281 Sanders Street.
youtube
  AKA Potato Chip Capital
Another lesser known fact about the city is that Detroiters consume on average at least 7 pounds of chips a year. The other citizens of the country consume only around 4 pounds of potato chips every year. Either way, that’s a lot of potatoes.
The city has its own Floating Post Office
The city of Detroit has its very own Floating Post Office, the only of its kind in the world. In the past, the J.W. Westcott II acts as a plain maritime reporting agency that roams the Detroit River. The Floating Post Office used to informed cargo vessels regarding the weather conditions and other situation in port. In 1948, the vessel eventually became the world’s first ever floating post office. It also gained its very own zip code, 48222. Now if only someone would send us a letter… but that’s another story altogether.
youtube
  A colossal theater district
Good news for Detroiters, they don’t need to travel all the way to the Big Apple just to see amazing live theater performances. The theater district of Detroit ranks as the second largest in the country. It falls only second after New York City. The colossal theater district expands an area for two city blocks with a massive 13,000 seats. That’s a cultural achievement that hard to beat. Famous musicians even call Detroit their very home. Who exactly? Well, Madonna, Kid Rock, Aaliyah, Eminem and Aretha Franklin call Detroit their home, just to name a few.
  Shaping the Wild West
Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac called the city from a French word “Detroit” which means “the strait”. It refers to the flow of the river, a strait between Canada and the US. Detroit is the oldest city in the west that was part of the thirteen colonies on the Mississippi. Founded on July 24, 1701, Detroit helped shaped the foundation of the Midwest that greatly influenced the future of the other nearby states.  The city even reuses the old fort making it the main building for the Detroit Free Press and News.
  Commemorating the Point of Origin
Just like any other city, Detroit still commemorates its point of origin. It’s a place where all measurements start. The Seven Mile Road and Eight Mile Road got their names because they are seven and eight miles from Campus Martius Park. The city point of origin is near the Fountain Bistro at Woodward and Monroe. A plaque is there to mark Detroit’s first days on the map.

Grand Haven – Music. Lights. Water. Magic!
The Grand Haven Musical Fountain is a synchronized water and light show accompanied with music of all varieties. Each 20-minute show features a different theme. A different show plays daily at dusk from Memorial Day through Labor Day as well as Fridays and Saturdays in May and September.
Built in 1962, it is the world’s largest musical fountain of it’s kind and was the world’s largest fountain until The Fountains of Bellagio opened at the Bellagio Resort in Las Vegas. The show takes place atop Dewey Hill and is best viewed from Waterfront Stadium. However, the Grand Haven Musical Fountain can be easily experienced from most of the Grand Haven Boardwalk. As long as you can see Dewey Hill, you’ll be able to see and hear the show. The audio is also broadcast on 88.7 FM for those who prefer to watch from a vehicle.
youtube
All starting times have been determined by selecting the very best time for viewing based upon darkness behind Dewey Hill.
A variety of titles and themes are presented each running evening for a 20-30 minute presentation.  Waterfront events may alter the fountain schedule.
Guiding ships and attracting visitors for over a century
Established in 1839, two lights on the south pier, both painted red, are connected by a lighted catwalk that also connects them to the shore and the Grand Haven Boardwalk. The inner light is cylindrical, and the foghouse outer light stands on a huge concrete foundation. People often enjoy a stroll along the boardwalk that borders the Grand River channel and the pier, making the Grand Haven lighthouses one of the most photographed lighthouses in the Midwest. The Grand Haven pier is also a popular spot for fishing and catching the sunset.
Currently the south pier which the lighthouses are located is currently closed for resurfacing and is not accessible. You can still access the boardwalk and view the lighthouses from the Grand Haven State Park. Another way to see the lighthouses, is from the north pier which is accessible via North Shore Drive in Ferrysburg. There is a public parking lot located on the north side of the river channel.
youtube
Tour the town on the trolley
Each summer from Memorial Day through Labor Day historic trolley rides are available to residents and visitors alike. The service runs seven days a week from 11am to 10pm with pickup locations at Chinook Pier, Boardwalk, the State Park, The Bookman and Pfaff Pharmacy.
Enjoy a historic narrative tour that starts at Chinook Pier, travels the waterfront and downtown areas and provides a unique trip back in time as you learn more about what  makes Grand Haven such a special part of Michigan.
youtube
    Local Food & Markets
The Grand Haven Area enjoys an abundance of family-owned farms, rolling fields, and orchards, providing a bountiful harvest for area farm markets and U-picks. Enjoy traveling the Northwest Ottawa County region to buy a bushel of freshness from the back of a farmer’s truck or gather your own at a U-pick farm or orchard.
Visit the many farmer’s markets in the area to peruse the plants, sample homemade delicacies and select a basketful of locally grown produce! With numerous markets in town, you could easily make a whole day out of browsing produce and clothes made in Michigan. Some of the better farmer’s markets in and around Grand Haven include:
CROSSROADS BLUEBERRY MARKET
Winkel Chestnut Farm
DeLass Garden Market
Cook’s Strawberries
Grand Haven Farmer’s Market
Saturdays in May from 8am – 1pm
Wednesdays & Saturdays June – October 8am – 1pm

Grandson’s Gardens
  West Michigan’s All-Volunteer Historic Railroad
youtube
The Coopersville & Marne Railway, with its antique passenger cars dating to the early part of the last century, goes out into the countryside and through family-owned farmlands. You will cross over an open-deck girder bridge, four creeks and one road bridge before you arrive at the Village of Marne. The 1950s-era diesel locomotive then uncouples from the train, runs along a passing siding next to your passenger car, couples onto the west end of the train and pulls the train back to the City of Coopersville.
This 14-mile excursion, back to a simpler time of transportation, lasts about an hour and 15 minutes. During the trip, the conductor describes points of interest while train music from the 1800s plays throughout the cars. Wildlife such as deer, wild turkeys, hawks and eagles may be seen along the way, as well as farm animals. Our track also runs, for a short distance, along the I-96 freeway, where Mustangs, Jaguars and Cougars may also be seen. When in Marne, if weather permits, passengers on Regular Excursions may detrain to watch the runaround and west end coupling. Sorry, we cannot detrain on Theme Trains. We depart every Wednesday and Saturday, May through October (Saturdays only April, November and December) from the station platform in historic downtown Coopersville, at 11am and 1:30pm. On some Theme Trains, a 3pm departure is added.

The Best Ski Resorts in Michigan
Even though summer is just around the corner and the snowy season is probably the last thing on your mind, you might want to consider planning ahead to avoid the winter rush (and price hikes) that hits when everyone starts shopping for winter vacations at the same time. And although some people might not consider Michigan a hotspot for skiing, there are a handful of resorts that offer great winter getaways without forcing you to leave the state.
In fact, Michigan ranks second only after New York when it comes to ski areas. Currently, we have 49 ski areas, 50 terrain parks, 269 lifts and almost 1,000 runs. Michigan also houses the only hill for ski flying in the country!  Sky flying is more like ski jumping on a larger platform. What really sets Michigan apart from other states’ winter vacation offerings is the accessibility and cost available here.  Even better is that no matter where you might be in Michigan, you’re probably not more than two hours away from an excellent skiing experience.
That all being said, the following are some of the best ski resorts in Michigan.
  Ski Brule
Ski Brule is usually the first ski resort to open in Michigan – they open their slopes as early as October and their ski season lasts for about six months. It is also the top choice in the Midwest as one of the best ski resorts. The location is the key to its popularity; it’s near the border of Wisconsin and there is a enormous and reliable snowfall in the area. In about 24 hours of snowing, the slopes in Brule can generate enough snow for you to head out on your skis. The resort has three terrain parks and the ever famous tubing park. They also offer fat bike trails, cross country, sleigh rides and acrobag. Kids of all ages will have a great time here and the resort also stays open for night skiers.
youtube
  Big Snow Resort
As defined by its name, Big Snow Resort has a massive snowfall to fill its slopes. The ski resort receives no less than 17 feet of snow on an average each year. It’s more than enough to cover the two mountains in the area, the Blackjack, and the Indianhead. Skiers of all levels can choose different terrain parks from beginners to intermediate even those who consider themselves as experts. For beginners and intermediate, Blackjack can offer a lot of them which also open for night skiing. This side of the mountain offer tubing and yeti snow where you can climb and slide until the snow melts.  On the other hand, the Indianhead caters for the expert skiers which feature 270 acres of snow filled slopes.  Another great thing about the Big Snow is that they offer different events aside from skiing. They host various artists to perform live music every weekend.
youtube
  Crystal Mountain
Placed as one of the best family ski resorts in Canada and in the US, Crystal Mountain can contend to other well-known ski resorts. Crystal Mountain has 58 trails, which 27 of those are designated for night skiing that is well lit. They also have other four terrain areas and four glade areas.  This ski resort offers luxurious facilities and amenities. They offer top notched cottages and the base of the mountain, campfires, family play area for the kids and an indoor pool. If you want a break from the skiing, they also offer activities such as snowcat biking, snowmobiling and snowshoeing. Or you can just relax in their 18,500 square foot certified spa that is illuminated with LEED.
youtube
  Shanty Creek Resorts
Families with smaller children opt to stay at Shanty Creek Resorts.  Beginners and level two skiers can easily navigate its slopes since 60% of the runs are made just for them. However, they still have advanced terrain for intermediate and expert skiers. The resort offers five terrain parks, which activities such as tubing and fat tire biking. Shanty Creek Resorts also has a reputation as one of the best ski resort in the Midwest.
youtube
  Mount Bohemia
Located in the northern part of Michigan, Mount Bohemia has the longest vertical in the Midwest measuring up to 900 feet.  On an average year, Mount Bohemia receives more than 273 inches of snow because of the immense lake effect snow. It’s a top destination for expert skiers who do not mind rough trails and backcountry scenery. Chutes and a cliff drop mark some of the forested trails. The ski resort hostel contains 24 coed different rooms, an outdoor hot tub, and a sauna. All of the rooms are within the sloped sides so visitors can still get a glimpse of the beautiful mountain peak.
youtube
  Pine Mountain
Another great ski resort tucked away in the northern part of Michigan, Pine Mountain has the reputation to house the best ski jump in the world. The United States still holds the record for the highest ski jump measuring up to 459 feet happened in the very slope of this mountain. More than 20,000 people gathered to see the spectacular event during the Jump Weekend event. The event which Kiwanis Ski Club host happens every February invites all top jumpers, where they set world records within the past years.  Pine Mountain boasts of 27 trails, a terrain park and slopes designated for night skiing.
youtube
  Nub’s Nob
Beginner skiers flock the Nub’s Nob to practice their skills on one of its easy trails. The ski resorts labeled 30% of their trails as easiest while designating the other 50% for the intermediate skiers. This means Nub’s Nob only has designated a small area for the expert. However, they do have a 427-foot vertical drop which the intermediate skiers can tackle on their own. Another great thing about the resort is that they offer a free beginner area complete with a chairlift. This weighs in your ability whether you want more of the amazing adventure before going to its slopes.
youtube

Last but definitely not the least, the Boyne Resorts, hailed as the most famous ski resort in Michigan. The ski resorts houses two mountains, the Boyne Highlands and Boyne Mountains. Both are considered the largest ski resorts in the southern part of Michigan. Each mountain contains 400 acres of land with no less than 115 trails. Boyne Resorts also includes the country’s first ever high-speed six-place chairlift along with the first four-place chairlift in Michigan. For skiers who like speeds, the downhill 70-kilometers cross-country serves a perfect place to master those skills. The resorts even placed a free beginner and snowboard areas, so first timers will not get left behind.  The SnowSports Academy is also located within the resort that earns great compliments from visitors.

Awesome Places to Visit When in Ann Arbor
Law Quadrangle
Take a step into history and visit Law Quadrangle. This law school at Michigan University is symbolic of the region’s academic excellence and is definitely worth your time for a visit and a walk through its grounds. You can take a leisurely stroll then head inside and marvel at the magnificent high ceilings. Wander through some of the small study enclaves and get a feel of what college looked like before decades of modern advancement. It might be a short tour, but if you walk into the new area of the law library you can see how they ingeniously transitioned the antique design to a modern interior.

The area will even give dramatic colors during the autumn season, which great for photo shoots. If you need a breather and want nature to refuel your energy then this place is perfect for you.

  Literati Bookstore
I am a book lover myself, and whenever I find a bookstore, I always drop by and check what’s available. Literati Bookstore stands out from the rest of the bookstores here in Ann Arbor. It’s not too crowded and it has a perfect downtown location. What I love most about this is they have long hours. If you get too immersed in your book you can sit in a coffee shop upstairs. Considering the space available, they have a wonderful selection with the best fiction and nonfiction books to choose from. It truly is a gem for book lovers with their amazing finds. The shop is also particularly clean and they can help you find a perfect gift.

Whether in Ann Arbor for a weekend getaway or looking for things to do near Detroit, you’re sure to have a great time in this wonderfully peaceful town when wearing our great Michigan gear!

7 Activities for Kids Within a Quick Drive from Adrian, MI
Adrian is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Lenawee County. The population was 21,133 at the 2010 census. Adrian lies in Michigan’s 7th congressional district.
The Centre
youtube
Location: 1800 W US Highway 223, Adrian, MI Great for: Kids and Young at hearts
This is a one-stop place if you have kids of different ages. They have water activities and outdoor attractions from toddlers to teenagers. They have this “Corner Park” kids will love, the outdoor splash pad, where they play on the bouncy mats and have a go in their zip lines. You don’t even have to worry about their safety, as all of their facilities are well maintained and clean. The adults can relax beside the outdoor pool on cozy lounge chairs. You don’t have to worry about bringing in foods because they have a concession bar that are reasonably priced. Despite their size, they offer great snacks and meals for kids and adults alike.
3&UP Game Lounge
youtube
Location: 630 S Main St Plymouth, MI Great for: Kids Activities, Recreation Center, Events and to Sharpen those ‘witty’ minds
3&Up Game Lounge is a break from the ordinary, the concept and ingenuity at its finest. They take those old school ideas which everyone loves, put it in a same where every can go and try thousands (seriously thousands) of board games. It’s great not just for kids but for you to have some good times with your teenagers. The game lounge closes late at night for groups who wants to settle a score on particular board games. Their staff are all accommodating and know almost all of the board games available. They can recommend several if you can’t pick what you like. It’s like going to a museum of games, it’s awesome. There are several games that I used to play and forgotten about until I saw it from one of the shelves. Even if you can buy snacks from the lounge, you can also bring your food. How much more convenient can that be?
Jump Station
youtube
Location: 31514 Grand River Ave Farmington, MI Great for: Kids Activities and Playground for toddlers
This one is great to let your kids put off some of their adrenaline rushes. It’s a harness jumping style where they can also hone in on their motor skills. What makes this place unique is that the owners are super friendly to the kids and what’s nice is that they also have packages for the kids to get free jumps. It’s a game ride where you can see how high your kids can go on a trampoline. You can see some of the kid’s faces lit up with a smile or a smirk whenever they do flips or a somersault.
Dudez & Dolls
youtube
Location: 433 W Dussel Dr. Maumee, OH Great for: Kids Activities, Events (Planning and Services) and spa services (for those little ones who wants to be pampered just like Mom)
I am not actually a fan of spa services, but this one stands out. They cater for those girls who want to be pampered at a salon but just too young and too soon to go to a salon. Drop by this place to see how it works. I actually had fun looking at the adults rather than the kids. Sure those 7-year-old girls seem like they are having the best of times. Who doesn’t like to be pampered and get dressed up? The salon staff are great to their guests. They treat all the girls super nice like in a real salon.
Kidopolis
youtube
Location: 509 State Cir Ann Arbor, MI Great for: Kids activities and Kids Parties (They are experts in Planning Events too!)
This place is made for birthdays and other big events. There are not many options in Ann Arbor for places like this. They can meet everything you need particularly for birthdays. You can choose from several rooms and a different room if your event calls for it. Another great thing about this place is they have several areas for toddlers to play with. For big events such as a 1st birthday or 7th birthday, you don’t have to  worry about the little things because they handle the rest. When you book, they close the whole place just for you. Everything is included as well from the napkins and other party preferences.
MJR Adrian Digital
youtube
Location: 3125 Birch Run, Adrian, MI Great for: Subtle (more like subdued) Kids Activities and family bonding
There is nothing like the old days when going out on a movie spells fun. Don’t get me wrong, it still is but with tech around, it loses some of its valor. I can appreciate having a big movie house like MJR in Adrian. It’s clean and well-kept all these years. You don’t need to drive all the way to Ann Arbor to see a movie. You might want to come during the afternoon where they usually have a kid pack promo. Kids can have drinks and gummy bears along with the usual popcorn. In good old days, they had free popcorn and a dollar movie for the kids. Now, that’s a bargain.
Many fun and exciting activities to do in or around Adrian, Michigan with your loved ones. Make it a family day every day by purchasing multiple matching sets of Michigan fashions for the whole family!!!

Things To Do In Ada Township
Planning a trip to Ada? Here is a list of things to do for everyone who is planning a trip to Ada Michigan.
Ada Township Covered Bridge
Great For: Taking Pictures a landmark
youtube
When in Ada, you have to visit Ada Township Covered Bridge. This goes a long way back in history and serves as a landmark in town. There are only a handful of bridges like this scattered across the country, and whenever you encountered some, it’s always worth a visit. The covered bridge has been rebuilt several times to preserve its presence in town. Also, it becomes a tourist attraction and it’s great for selfies!. The Ada Township Covered Bridge has a natural beauty and unique appeal that attracts people. Locals will tell you to grab some ice cream just a few blocks away from the bridge and just have a nice stroll down the bridge.  If you have a fantastic knack for photography the bridge serves as a great subject. The Thornapple River that flows below the bridge has great picnic spots.  Families with smaller kids usually go around the bridge for a leisurely afternoon walk.
  Seidman Park
Great for: Advance runners and hikers who want to train (Ironman or 21k all terrain race)
youtube
This is a great training ground for runners who want to train their legs on an all-terrain territory. The park has it all, elevation challenges, muddy areas, river bends, and rocky terrain. This course will surely fire up those muscles before the big race. The park is well marked and you may want to start in a paved section before hitting the ground, that will give your legs a good warm up.  Careful though, as many would hike along with you, bringing their dogs along with them.
But don’t worry they are required to put them on a leash. If you are not up to the challenge of running, a quick hike wouldn’t hurt. The park is lined with trees perfect for those hot summer day walks. Try to bring your pets along, as they can also use the fresh air. Don’t forget to bring bug spray as mosquitos can get a bit nosey in the marsh section.
  Cascade Peace Park
Great for: Beginners to intermediate runners and bikers in training
youtube
For those who just want a leisurely stroll in the woods or a beginner runner then you can try to a round or two in Cascade Peace Park. You will not get lost since they have good maps along the trail. You can park on Grand River and start your course there, or just walk a few minutes to relish the wooded areas. There are also several benches strategically placed for you to sit on whenever you feel tired or just be alone with nature.
Gravel Bottom Craft Brewery & Supply
Great for: Awesome local brewed beers
youtube
I always appreciate the uniqueness of a local brewed wine or beer. So whenever I visit places new areas I typically go for places like this. It is where you can literally distinguish their particular taste of brewery. A trip to a local tavern is always worth a visit. One downside though, they don’t serve food but you can order from other restos and have it delivered in the bar. They have board games to choose from and you can even play it for free while you enjoy a glass or two. But what really sets this apart, is they frequently rotate the taps and you can get a different kind of beer every time you visit here. The staff is very friendly and well informed about their brews so you know you are served with only the best.
Ada, MI is a great place to visit. If you want to take your love of the mitten state with you in your travels this summer, then consider rocking of our Michigan apparel!

Great Eats in Detroit [Where To Eat at In the “D” Local Friday Features]
Whether it is your first time visiting Detroit or been here for the “nth time”, you probably don’t want to miss out these great places to grab some food.
El Barzon Restaurante
youtube
Detroit may not house that many Mexican Italian restaurants but when it does, you can be sure it’s a good one! El Barzon is different in so many ways. They serve high-class Mexican food and amazing homemade pasta on one plate. The Mexican owner worked for several years in an Italian restaurant before opening El Barzon which explains why this place serves authentic food in both fares. The amazing ambiance added to the owner’s touch of classic Mexican flair, and they also have an outdoor seating.
  Duly’s Place
youtube
Almost all of the locals agree that Duly’s Place is a place to be to have a taste of an authentic Coney dog. They have been selling inexpensive yet delicious breakfast classics of bacon, eggs, and pancakes for more than 90 years. Staff and diner goers are always friendly and best of all they serve amazing food 24 hours a day! If you want to experience Detroit, then visit this place. Don’t believe me? Just ask Anthony Bourdain. He very much approved this humble restaurant and that’s something coming from a world class top chef.
Green Dot Stables
youtube
Another favorite of locals is the Green Dot Stables which serves numerous choices for sliders and fries. This is a great place if you just want to hang around a local bar, watch some sports game and make friends while you’re at it. While their beer is famously good (at a cheap price) wait till you taste their food. Most of the foods are served in a bun, but you’ll be amazed how the chef can make it taste unique and fresh.
  Le Petit Zinc
youtube
For coffee and crepes, you could not go wrong in Le Petit Zinc. They make sure to serve the freshest crepes and flavorful espresso. Don’t let the tiny space fool you,  because their top-notch crepes and pastries delivers in spades.  During summertime, it’s a great place to meet an old friend and just enjoy the garden patio while catching up. You don’t need to go to France to experience Parisienne brasserie, this place has it!
  Slows Bar BBQ Restaurant
youtube
Everyone in Detroit (ok maybe exaggerating here) has been to Slows Bar BBQ Restaurant or just Slows. I highly recommend the pulled pork and pork belly which are both superb. Actually, everything on the menu is excellent. People are lining up to get a taste of their foods which are all grilled to perfection. Take my word for it, the wait is worth it.
Mudgie’s Deli
youtube
Still craving for more meat? Detroiters will tell you every now and then (just in case you forgot) to go to Mudgie’s Deli. They serve the best sandwiches teeming with splendid concoctions from their menu.  They also have an array of food menu from vegans to meat lovers. It is a hidden gem in the city. This place is relatively cheap, the food is killer and the staff is superb.

Everything You Wanted To Know About Lake Michigan When You Were Doing Research For School Papers
Lake Michigan belongs to the five Great Lakes. The third largest lake of the five Great Lakes, Lake Michigan is the only lake whose borders are contained within the United States. That pretty much makes Lake Michigan “America’s Great Lake”. The other four Great Lakes crossed boundaries between the US and Canada. The Great Lakes are often referred to as the “Third Coast” after the Pacific and the Atlantic. Livnfresh calls it the “Fresh Coast“. A great number of AMAZINGLY beautiful beaches run along Lake Michigan.
Who discovered Lake Michigan?
Lake Michigan started its formation when two tectonic plates moved apart forming the Mid-Continent Rift. Samuel de Champlain, a French explorer sent his subordinate Jean Nicolett to search for the “Northwest Passage”. But Nicolette discovered Lake Michigan in 1634. He explored the southern part of the lake, Chicago’s present-day location.
Where is Lake Michigan?
Lake Michigan flows across Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, and Wisconsin. The straits of Mackinac connect Lake Michigan and Lake Huron in the northern part.
How deep is Lake Michigan?
The average depth of Lake Michigan stands at approximately 279 feet. The lake has a depth of 922 feet at its deepest point.
How big is Lake Michigan?
Lake Michigan is the third largest Great Lake in North America and fifth-largest in the world. Its water surface covers 22,300 square miles.
How wide is Lake Michigan?
Lake Michigan is 118 miles wide, 307 miles long and covers 22,300 square miles.
How many gallons of water in Lake Michigan?
Lake Michigan is the second largest Great Lake when it comes to the volume of water. It has about 1,108 cubic miles of water or 6 quadrillion gallons of water. The lake also provides drinking water of over one billions gallons a day. Lake Michigan’s water can fill 24 trillion bathtubs or about 3,000 bathtubs every day worldwide.
What kind of fish are in Lake Michigan?
Fish thrive in the waters of Lake Michigan which has an estimated 15 million fish.  The lake serves as home to brown trout, Chinook salmon, coho salmon, lake trout, rainbow trout, smallmouth bass, multiple sunfish species, steelhead species, and yellow trout. Love to Fish? Check out this “Michigan Fishing T Shirt“!
Best time to catch fish in Lake Michigan
Each species of fish has certain seasons when you have the best chances to catch the best and the biggest fish in Lake Michigan. The best period to catch coho salmon falls in mid-February to May and from September to October. The coho salmon that dwells in the lake are about 2 to 3 pounds.
For Chinook salmon, the best time to catch this fish in in the months of May and mid-July until September. They are about 7 to 12 pounds in size.
The best time to reel in the steelhead fish from a pier or boat hits the highest in mid-June until August. When fishing from a stream, it peaks around July through February. The fish average size weighs in at 7 to 10 pounds.
Lastly, the lake trout population’s highest number of catch falls in mid-June until August and from the middle of October until the start of November. Lake trout weighs in around 8 to 12 pounds and best fished by boat.

Mercury Rising- Scientists Baffled Over Increasing Mercury Levels In Great Lakes Fish
Authorities recently gave out advisories regarding the high level of toxic mercury in Great Lakes fish. With the advisories came a recommendation to limit certain fish species consumption.Livnfresh is an advocate for keeping Lake Michigan and the Great lakes beautiful and clean for humans as well as the creatures that dwell beneath.
 Side effects of Mercury
Mercury, a heavy, silver metal forms as a liquid at room temperature and is deadly to animals, especially to humans. The Environmental Protection Agency or EPA discovered that short-term exposure to mercury found in water can result in  health hazards. Kidney damage can happen when exposed to mercury at levels beyond the contaminant level of 0.002 ppm. The toxic substance can also result to brain damage in children and hinder brain development in developing babies. Mercury can also attack the immune system and damage heart function in adults.
Since 1970 the mercury content found in Greta Lakes based fish continued to drop progressively. The reduction of mercury was the result of stricter Midwestern smokestacks regulations and the closure of coal-fired manufacturing plants. Also, technology provides massive benefit for pollution prevention.
Research scientist at the Environment and Climate Change Canada, Agnes Richards said, “We’ve been monitoring since the 1970s and the (mercury contamination) trends overall have been declining, as have been the emissions of mercury into the atmosphere and deposition into the lakes.”
Richards also added, “We decided to look at recent trends, from 2000 to 2015. What we found is, at some specific sites, trends have reversed.”
 Reversal of the trend
In the past years, the trend started to change. Scientist found mercury level increasing in several Great Lakes fish like walleye and lake trout. Another peculiar case in the toxic mercury reports shows that not all fishes are affected. Researchers are still conducting more studies to find out the reason for the incidence.
Joseph Bohr, the aquatic biologist for the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality’s Water Resources Division claimed that mercury level in some fish continues to rise. He said (in the same article), “Out of 19 data sets, we see eight where we can see a significant trend.”
In Lake Michigan, Bohr mentioned that walleye and lake trout in the Grand Traverse bays show an increase of mercury content. Scientists can also see the same trend in Lake Huron in the walleye from Saginaw Bay and the lake trout found in Thunder Bay. Lake Erie also shows mercury level rising. The aquatic biologist said that the average increase of mercury level reaches up to 2% annually.
For the meantime, the increasing level of mercury toxicity remains in isolated areas.
 Scientist Hypothesis-are storms to blame?
Ecotoxicologist of Environmental Canada, Shane De Solla believed that the warming of the Great Lakes shows a key factor in the trend. De Solla, the co-author of the research said, “The lakes are slightly warmer, and that increases the production of methyl mercury.”
Richards also mentioned that the region’s regular strong storms in the past years can also affect the Great Lakes. She said, “That results in a lot of flooding, and the re-suspension of sediments, what was buried before can become exposed, and that can increase the conversion of mercury to methylmercury.”
Meanwhile, Bohr mentioned about the invasive species which “significantly changed the food web.” These invasive species significantly altered the fish diets.
He said that in Saginaw, Thunder bays, and Grand Traverse carp are not showing any increase in mercury levels. Bohr added that in the Detroit River and St. Clair River carp are even seen decreases in mercury. He believed that the findings show important clues because carp being bottom feeders and eat differently from big sports fish.
Bohr said that carp are “low on the food chain” and “mucking around on the bottom eating insects, basically.”
De Solla believed that the mercury level in the Great Lakes will not cause any “catastrophic in the next little while.” However, if it continues to increase then “it could become a problem again.”
Mercury levels found in the fishes remains below the US Environmental Protection thresholds. Nevertheless, researchers want to establish if the reported mercury level is a temporary condition or will cause an environmental concern.
Billions worth of fish industry possibly effected
The outcome can greatly affect Michigan’s fishing industry.  The data of The Michigan Department of Natural Resources concluded that anglers spent at least $2.4 billion in equipment and trip-related expenditure in 2011.

4 Unforgettable Shipwrecks in Lake Michigan
  Lady Elgin
Lady Elgin remains as the worst open water disaster in the history of the Great Lakes. The incident happened on September 8, 1860, claimed the lives of more than 300 people.  A smaller vessel named Augusta, a 129-foot schooner rammed the 252-foot wooden steamship, Lady Elgin at a speed of 11 knots.
Witnesses account say that the second mate of Augusta spotted Lady Elgin 30 minutes before the collision. However, the schooner did change its course until it was too late. The smaller vessel managed to correct its course 10 minutes before the collision.
When Augusta collided with Lady Elgin, there was music in the forward cabin. The captain of Augusta sailed away thinking that their vessel sustained more damage than the larger vessel. But Augusta torn a big part of the Lady Elgin, the crew lowered a lifeboat but was not secured. The lifeboat just floated away before passengers could go onboard.
  SS Carl D. Bradley
SS Carl D. Bradley was the largest ship that sails the Great Lakes between the years 1927 and 1949. The 639-foot “Queen of the Lakes was an engineering spectacle as it serves as the largest and longest self-unloading freighter of its days.
The vessel used to tow limestone to the deep water ports of Lake Michigan from Lake Huron and Lake Superior. Before it sank, the Carl Bradley collided with another ship, MV White Rose along St. Clair River. The damage may have contributed to the disaster the following year.
A massive gale-force storm hit Carl Bradley on November 18 after a haul delivery in Gary, Indiana. The vessel was on its way heading north in the upper part of Lake Michigan., The freighter began cracking in to around 5:30 pm when the storm’s wind reaching 65 miles per hour and waves began to soar up to 20 feet tall.
The crew made three radio calls of Mayday but rescuers reached the freighter too late, only two survived from the 35 crewmen on board the Carl Bradley.
  Niagara
Records show that Niagara was the finest steamers of its era. The side-wheeled vessel was built in 1846 in Buffalo New York and serves a main transportation for both passengers and good in the Great Lakes.
However, on a tragic day of September 24, 1856, the steamship caught fire around 6:00 pm. The fire started in the engine room but the cause of the fire remains a mystery until today. One theory surfaces about the incident is that some flammable cargo may have cause the fire.
Most of the crew and passengers were able to jump from Niagara. Nearby ships later rescued the stranded people. However, 60 out of the 300 passengers died on that day and the entire ship was lost in the water.
  L.R. DOTY
One of the most memorable shipwrecks in Lake Michigan was L.R. Dotty. The vessel was one of the last wooden steamships to set sail on the Great Lakes in 1893. Steel become the standards for newer models. The 291-foot steamer had reinforced steels and very much sturdy according to the standards.
L.R. Dotty also has a powerful and huge engine but did not have any electricity of any up to date communication apparatus.  The vessel was no match for the vicious storm on October 25, 1898. On that same day, several vessels on the lake perished including Chicago boardwalk and Milwaukee break wall. The storm claimed all the lives and cargo onboard of L.R. Dotty.  The ship was later discovered after 112 years since it sank in the bottom of Lake Michigan.

The Best Beaches in Traverse City MI 2017[Local Friday Features]
Traverse City, (my favorite city in the world) lies on the shores of Lake Michigan’s Grand Traverse Bays and is the largest city in the 21-county of Northern Michigan. If you are heading “Up North” and want to “explore some of Northern Michigan’s Best Beaches“, then make sure to read our article.
TC is the largest producer of tart cherries in the United States reportedly, however rumors swirl about the Cherry Festival bringing in cherries from Washington for the National Cherry Festival…. The festival attracts at least 500,000 tourists for a full week in July. Talk about “fudgy central”. If you dont know what the term “fudgy” means, it means you’re not a local. People visiting always seem to stop at some of the fudge shops that are scattered across TC.
History
French voyagers named the city after the Grand Traverse Bay as “La Grande Traverse.” It means the long crossing across the mouth of the bay. In 1839, Rev Peter Doughtery started the first permanent settlement in Traverse City.
The Best Beaches in Traverse City
Traverse City draws tourist because of its many spectacular beaches, crystal clear waters, amazing hotels and world class restaurants. To make your next vacation easier, we compiled a list of the city’s best beaches.
Traverse City State Park
Photo via Facebook
The beach is located just two miles west of downtown TC. It stretches a quarter mile of beautiful sandy beach on Grand Traverse Bay. This place also offers a great camping site with at least 300 camping wooded setting spots. It also happens to run adjacent to the Pinestead Reef resort which is one of my favorite places.
To get there, just cross a bridge across US-31, to reach the camping ground.
Bryant Park
Photo via Facebook
Ok, maybe I’m a little biased on this one. I grew up right across the street from this beach, so it will always have a special place in my heart. Located within a few minutes’ away from downtown, Bryant Park sits on the West Grand Traverse Bay.  The beach faces west, so it is always great to catch the sunsets here. Situated at the base of Old Mission Peninsula, it is also a great place for kids to play under the pine trees.
Bryant Park is super close to, Bardon’s Wonder Freeze, a mid-century shop that was my favorite place growing up to get ice cream after a baseball game at the Civic’s Center.
  Clinch Park
Photo via Facebook
Popular because it’s gorgeous after just having a major facelift a few years ago, Clinch Park is a “fudgy” and local favorite.
Since its right downtown, you can head there after that shopping spree, or after indulging in some beverages or food. You can burn those calories (from dining in downtown TC’s cafes) in several activities on the beach. Clink Park offers kayaks, Stand Up Paddleboards (SUP), and canoes rentals.
Although parking is not easily accessible, except for some spots scattered across the marina, you can park along Cass Street and cross the underpass to get to Clink Park. Cass Street is located on the north side of West Grandview Parkway.
East Bay Park
Photo Via Facebook
East Bay Park is great to bring along your toddlers along because the beach is shallow than most of the beach in TC. Perfect for those little kids to splash and enjoy the warm water and lifeguards watch the beach during the summer.  It is located on the bottom of the East Grand Traverse. The beach also has a playground and restrooms.
 West End Beach
If you want to party in TC, then the West End Beach sure top the list. It’s hard to really differentiate what is Clinch Park beach and West End Beach, because they are essentially the same spot. But the maria is what separates West End Beach from Clinch Park.
If you see people drinking beer and sporting backwards ball caps, then you are probably at West End Beach. This place offers several sand volleyball courts, an open space for Frisbees or to play catch. The beach is also buzzing with people lying along its mile-ling sweet sandy beach. The Volley ball section of the beach is populated with teens and young adults. Boaters often park their boats and “Red Neck Yacht Club” it up for days.
West End beach is literally across the street from restaurants, cafes, and shops. So, you could just grab a bite and go back to swim in no time. The beach is located west of Division Street and on the north side of Grandview Parkway.
 Power Island
Photo Via Facebook
Now, if boating is your life, then head on to Power Island. This place offers almost everything for the adventurer. Power Island has great wooded hikes, old-school camping sites, and sandy beaches.
Also, it’s great to spend time some quality time with your loved ones since the scenic island is secluded from the busy noise of the city. The island is located 3.5 miles from Bowers Harbor on Old Mission Peninsula.
Haserot Beach
Photo Via Facebook
Haserot Beach is a place also known for toned down ambiance. This place will give you a quieter beach time since people rarely go here. Haserot Beach is located on Old Mission Harbor and features a playground, picnic area, boat launch and restrooms.
You need to drive a little farther from downtown TC to visit, but trust me it’s worth the drive. Kite boarders love this spot. It is located north of Traverse City about 18 miles via M-37.
North Bar Lake
Photo Via Facebook
If you want to go in an off beaten path to have a pristine quiet time on the beach, then North Bar Lake is a perfect destination for you. It’s a 40-minute drive from downtown TC but the Sleeping Bear Dunes is one exceptional place to visit.
To get there you can drive via M-72 about 30 miles from downtown Traverse City. You also need a park permit to enter the beach but you can also pay once you get there.
