Debut children’s picture book Pierre’s New Hair is now available for pre-order
It’s been an absolute dream developing this story with Tate Publishing and Plum Pudding. I hope you’ll enjoy reading it as much as I’ve enjoyed working on it.
Here’s the link to pre-order the hardback from Waterstones - https://www.waterstones.com/book/pierres-new-hair/joseph-hollis/9781849767460
Above is a picture of the proofs I received in the post.

Character samples for Egmont.
This story sounded like lots of fun. I really enjoyed working on the sample. It encouraged me to move away from my ‘animal characters’ default mode of operating.

Maxwell’s Demon (cat)
Here you see one of many character designs for an FQXi animation / web game based on the Maxwell’s Demon thought experiment. A real pleasure to work with FQXi again and the animators over at Sci Ani

Author / Illustrator
Sometimes you’re just ‘Not in the Mood’.
Spread from my picture book that was highly commended in the Macmillan prize 2018.
Once I’m in the mood I’ll breathe some new life into this one. Better polish my dancing shoes.

Curious Characters
Joy is contagious, so when the illustration process is joyful, it shows in the work.
From anthropomorphic kitchen utilities to alligators on roller skates I love to invent and create characters of all shapes and sizes.

Our Quantum Reality - Written by Paul Knott
Bringing to life a mind-boggling conundrum at the heart of quantum mechanics.
This picture book Introduces the famous Schrödinger’s cat thought experiment. And makes accessible a number of competing theories that physicists use to try to explain Schrödinger’s cat, each of which gives us a unique description of the reality in which we live.

Illustration process
I am fascinated by creating alternative worlds teeming full of intrigue, action and
mischief. Whether through character or narrative, I aspire to create work with warmth and affection that reflects our human quirks and idiosyncrasies and that ultimately spreads a sense of well-being.

Experiment & Play
Illustration process
I love to draw with dip pen and ink and then apply colour digitally using monoprint textures I’ve made in the print room. But variety is key to creativity so I continue to learn through playful experiments with different medium. Its exciting to go with the ‘flow’ and invite the unexpected whether its meditating sourdough bread, shamanic collage or odes to pop legends made out of vegetables, its nice to surprise yourself. And you never know what new ideas you may generate.
