      josie wasn’t a complete moron, she knew what shots were thanks to the last party but she wasn’t aware of how many she should       &       shouldn’t take.  she only took three.      “      oh, sorry  !       ”      josie hops down off of the sofa, sitting politely as she listens to cecilia’s reason for not wanting her to jump, but still swinging her feet.   the change in decision was confusing and josie was worried it was a test.      “      are you sure ?   i’m fine with sitting i’m a little dizzy anyway. i had a few of those small, tea-party glasses, and they’re so cute but  !       ”      a giggle erupts before she could finish.      “      no mas for me.      ”

“Please don’t step on the couch, that’s more than you can afford in your lifetime.” She droned on, eyeing one of the seniors on top of their living room couch. “My mom would freak out —” But at the thought of that she retracted her sentence. “Scratch that, jump away.”

“i think i may have had a hand in finishing half a tray of pigs in a blanket.” a slightly awkward pause falls between him and the other before he shrugs meekly. “what? i’ve been waiting for the dj to play a decent song —- that and i’ve sort of been trying to muster up the courage to ask you to dance with me, but… i mean… if you don’t want to… that’s okay too.”

             josie watches as her classmates dance, lounge   &   talk with glee.  it was nice to have a night where everyone seemed happy   &   weren’t focused on the usual petty drama. when fitz starts speaking she puts all of her attention on him.        “      hey, those aren’t pigs !      ”       her joke was delivered with a grin even though it was far from funny.       “      i’d love to dance !      ”      it’s a loud squeal, bouncing on her toes as she has been ever since taking a couple sips of the funky punch. in her best english accent she reaches a hand out and bends at the waist.        “      may i have this dance with you, kind sir ?      ”

“It’s only cheating if you get caught,” Alyss pointed out. It wasn’t exactly the truth but it didn’t matter unless they got caught, so it was essentially correct. “It’s one high school assignment, it’s not like I’m falsifying some big published paper,” she rolled her eyes; and she thought some of her friends were dramatic.

            “      that’s a lie.  it’s cheating even if you don’t get caught.   if you never get caught in a lie, it’s still a lie.      ”     sure, the subject changed but josie is still on it.         “      if you never get caught eating an apple, you still ate it.      ”   she stops for a moment letting herself think.   “      if you never get caught going to the doctors, you still went.  i’m just saying !      ”

        “      oh  ?       um, i don’t really like him.      ”       she answers honestly   &   lets her disdain show on her face.         “      he was kind of mean i think. i didn’t finish the movie, it’s just from what i can tell.  why did you ask ?       ”

“well,   while everyone is obsessing over this damn dance i’m just trying to figure out my halloween costume.  what do you think about   art the clown  ?”

“I don’t think these are the right directions.” She said, looking down at the paper they gave her. “I was supposed to take a left… and my locker should’ve been right here.” And right in front of her was actually a door to the rest room, well, at least it was the women’s restroom… right?

she began to laugh before getting the actual joke out.  “      what if they meant the opposite of left and forgot to right it down?      ”    it was funnier to her, looking at the paper. still shaking her head she lets her hand rest on her forehead.    “      it could be a late april fool’s joke.      ”

“      no! i don’t think i can, that’s cheating.      ”   she whispers loudly, still smiling at the silly question anyway.  “      i'm pretty sure you can be jailed for cheating in some states and i don't want you to go to jail and i don't want to have to go to jail because of you.”  cheating on your spouse but when the topic got brought up over family dinner, they didn’t define which kind of cheating. 

Alyssia sidled up behind the door of a locker, making her presence known. “So,” she started, “say I give you twenty bucks, would you write my English assignment for me?”

if only josie was any good at listening, no sudden movements when a dog approaches her? not likely.   she squeals, barely able to calm her excitement as she starts bouncing her legs happily. at least she listened and didn’t move suddenly.       “   can i hug her ?   please ?     i love german shepherds so much.   ”

“scully! no!” lily exclaimed, mortified as she tugged at her dog’s leash. unfortunately, the girl was no match to her german shepherd, who practically dragged lily across the park to sniffle at the stranger’s feet. “sorry about him… and just don’t make any sudden movement.”

Was she… as the kids say it: forreal? His mouth hangs open. He almost wants to ask if she knows just exactly what the ‘Roaring 20s’ implies but he’s afraid of the answer. That’s a first. He shuts his lips, deciding to carry on with the conversation instead. “I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t ecstatic about making an appearance,” he tells her truthfully. School dances are… frivolous, but as a Jock, it was his god-given right to show up and make everybody feel bad. He’s more excited about that than the actual event itself. Plus, with Anissa on his arm this year, it should be even better. Even if it wasn’t in a necessarily genuine sense. “If it were anything like Carrie, it would be so much fun,” he corrects. “Has anyone asked you out?” He could have so easily worded that in a way that puts her down but he can’t find it in himself to do so. It’d be almost... too easy? Even people like him have standards.

              “      no, it wouldn’t !    everyone died in carrie.      ”    she reminds him as if the popular stephen king story was easily forgettable.       “      not yet but that’s okay. it’s good.      ”     it was a genuine reply, she was more focused on the fun aspect than the date aspect of the dance which probably made her stand out from the rest of the students. frankly, having a date would be everything but  fun.       “       if i had a date then i wouldn’t be able to dance with everyone   &   they would ask me if i want punch   &   i would have to say yes but i’m not supposed to drink red dye because it makes me super jumpy   &   it makes me talk a lot.      ”         which says a lot since she’s the same way without red dye.      “      so i’m happy no one asked me.      ”    josie finally concludes, playing with a strand of her brown hair.     “      i bet you’re going with your girlfriend.      ”   the final word is dragged on, letting a finger poke at his shoulder teasingly.     “      anissa’s lovely.      ”

Ollie sighed and looked up from his drawing tablet, unable to focus any longer on his little project in front of him. “Not knowing how to dance or interact sociably with most people are both good reasons to not attend a school dance, right?” He asked, just hoping somebody would agree and he could feel better about wanting to skip.

        “      no.      ”     it was a stern answer but the giggles that released with it made it sound a little more pleasant.       “      you have to go !   i  don’t know how to dance   &   i’m going   &   if you’re talking to me then you do know how to interact with other people. we can dance together, wouldn’t that be fun ?      ”

   “      really?   that’s so exciting !       ”     as far as josie is concerned, anything involving animals was a good thing.     “      when you die can i have the cats ? please ?      ”

Tristan smirks at Josie’s… quirks. Despite her being a complete weirdo, he found her quite charming to an extent. The same way one finds a clueless animal charming. You know, like those newborn mammals that can’t stand up by themselves. As annoying as one might think her oddities would be, Tristan almost finds them.. delightfully entertaining. He puts his phone aside, figuring a little psychoanalysis sounded more fun. He leans over the table. “So how’ve you been, Josie? What’s life been like for you?” He asks, genuinely interested to know. It could be something that helps him crack a major study psychologists were on at the moment.

     “      good, thank you so much for asking me !      ”     a lot of the time people ask how are you, they’re looking for a standard reply.  josie never had a standard reply.            “      life is super cray right now because of the holidays  BUT  the dance is coming up   &   i’m so excited about it !      ”     bouncing in her seat, her feet still swinging,  despising the requirement to STAY seated.  an excited josie is usually a lot more animated than a seated one.        “      i don’t know how twenty year olds dress but i’m going shopping with my bubbe   &   she’s been twenty before so i think she’ll know.      ”    it’s safe to say she’s not one hundred percent sure what ROARING TWENTIES was.           “      are you excited for the dance ?  it won’t be like carrie, it’ll be so much fun !     ”

tristantylers‌:

“School doesn’t test your intelligence, it tests your memory. If this school were forced to think, 75% of it would be pulverized.” He makes ‘brain blown’ gesture with his hands, eyes rolling for the effect of it. After such a statement, he shifts his eyes back down to the group work they’re doing, content to contribute again now that he’s got some attention. “Number 5 is C, by the way,” he corrects offhandedly before whipping out his phone – boredom quick to find him again. He really needs to consider an advanced placement class.

            she’s swinging her feet underneath the table, a pencil standing upright in her hand as she finds herself thoroughly indulged in his words.  the indulgence was interrupted when she laughs at his gesture, focusing her attention back on her paper.       “      okay, smarty pants.      ”      there were numbers that counted down to the problems but josie still found it reasonable to count to number five herself.  out loud.   and then with her fingers tipping an imaginary hat, she says in a british accent.      “      thank you, ma good sir.      ”

imogen-prinz‌:

Imogen was caught somewhat off guard by the greeting. Knowing that it irritated Tilly to no end when she couldn’t understand what Imogen was saying or worse when Imogen was trying to include her in some sort of ‘weird and foreign’ affair,  she’d kept the holiday celebrations to herself or at the very least limited to her family. When Josie approached, however, a smile formed on Imogen’s face as she repeated the greeting warmly, “Shana tova,” she chimed, “Toda” she added as she plucked a cookie from the plate, impressed that Josie had bothered to accommodate the extremely small Jewish population in Northlake that morning. “Does anybody have any idea what you’re talking about or are they just cashing in on the free food?” she asked curiously, an element of skepticism in her tone, she evidently believed the latter was more likely.

 the warm greeting repeated from imogen made lips that were already smiling open wider.   even though it may be bizarre for certain people to hear, the prinz’s were a home away from home for josie. they’re also one of the very few people her bubbe didn’t consistently complain about.    it wasn’t easy to find jewish people in northlake who follow the teachings.       “       a lot of them think it’s my birthday.      ”        she admits, a fact that was both funny and upsetting to her maily because it’s her favorite day, a teensy part of her believes everyone should know it.   she pushes the tray against her stomach, lacing her arm around it in order to sustain the position well enough for her now free hand to grab herself a cookie.        “      which isn’t true but i wish it were. wouldn’t it be cool to have your birthday on the jewish new year   &   yom kippur ?      ”

At the greeting, Oliver had absolutely no idea how to respond but smiled anyway, a tentative “Shalom?” leaving his lips as he accepted a cookie from the plate. “Is it your birthday?” he asked curiously, knowing that sometimes students brought party favors for their own birthday when they couldn’t rely on their friends or classmates to provide them. 

          “      shalom !       ”        cheered almost immediately after him, excited to hear him being one of the first to announce the greeting.   she hadn’t realized just how tiny the jewish community in northlake was until today.        “      no, silly, it’s for  Rosh Hashanah.      ”     answered as if he should have already known, she pushes the platter towards him, urging him to take another cookie.    “      it’s the jewish new year !       ”     her moment of reflecting on the holiday was soon interrupted by just how heavy the plate seemed to be.       “      it’s my favorite holiday because my mumue flies in from san diego and she always brings me these little glass cups as souvenirs and i have like twenty of them already.  it’s a real collection, i think.       ”

“I’m sorry, who are they and why is everyone cowering in fear as they pass by?” The brunette asks the closest person to her as she sits down in one of the many free seats she could find. “I know I’m new here and all, but that’s not normal or at least, not where I’m from.”

                     “      they’re not cowering !      ”        they were but josie’s certain it’s not out of fear. maybe it’s a game they play.. with everyone in the school.   strawberry liquid is smeared all over her lips, only to be topped on by MORE liquid as she takes another bite.       “      they can be scary, sure, but they can also be really nice sometimes.      ”     unknowingly, all this is sad with her mouth half full.       “      i wish they’d be nicer but they’re probably just sad.      ”
