where is my mind?

Of all the people you have kissed she was your favourite because she didn’t flinch when you curled your hand around her neck and tightened. She said “I break the law because I’ve never broken a heart and I want to know what it feels like to be the brick not the window pane”. When she’s drunk she’ll dress up for you, all straps & lace & stockings. When she’s high she’ll dress down for you, all skin & skin & skin."

This is what I like about photographs. They’re proof that once, even if just for a heartbeat, everything was perfect.
I have lived multiple lives, in only one life. As a child growing up, I was a scared little girl. I did everything that I was told, and it wasn’t until I was a teenager that a strike of rebellion ripped through me. I had always been a witch. From the time that I could form sentences I was working on spells. Even my mother claims that the first word to leave my mouth was magic. I’m not sure if I believe that. In Salem, I was in love. Not only with the history of the place, and the power that I felt there but also with a boy. I’d like to think we’d be married had I not run off when I found out that I was pregnant. My whole life in Salem was based around magic, and the other things that made me happy. It wasn’t the life that my father wanted me to live, but, if I’m honest - I always prefered the company of my mother. She’s one person who truly understands me.
The photos that you see, are within my first twenty years of life. My happiest times. After Brooklyn, things got complicated and I very much don’t like talking about it. It’s not like anyone would believe me anyway. They probably don’t even believe me when I talk about what happened in Brooklyn. The longest home I had outside of Salem. For two years I lived in the city. I gave birth to my beautiful son Kaden, and I thought that if I were to spend my life anywhere other than Salem, Massachusetts that it’d be Brooklyn, New York. Of course, that ended up changing. The times after Brooklyn were not easy, and I don’t like to remember what happened to me in Gibsonton, Florida or Amsterdam. Things just didn’t go as planned. Like they ever did. When I look at these photos, that I am showing you, I feel the most joy that you can get out of me these days. They take me back to a time when I was free. Where I didn’t feel like the weight of the world was crushing me.

Caught in the Act.
Growing up in Salem meant that nearly every night you climbed out of your bedroom window, and ran through the town, without a care in the world. It was almost like the parents knew what their kids were doing at night, because it was on very rare occasions that the kids would get in trouble for being hungover at breakfast, or at their friend's house when they ‘fell asleep’ at home. It was just the way that Salem worked, Lux guessed. As long as the kids weren’t putting themselves in any real danger, they could do what they wanted. They could also put themselves in real danger, as long as they didn’t get caught.
“Hurry up!” Lux whispered loudly from across the room, as Jasper LaVey pulled his jeans on. Practically bouncing all over the room before he finally did. Lux’s room was in the attic of the house, so there was no way that Piper and Jack couldn’t hear the noise - which only caused more of a rushed panic to flow through the air. Carefully, Lux lifted her window and stepped out onto the roof. Jasper followed behind her, practically diving out of her room, making another loud noise when he hit the the shingles. Lux rolled her eyes. “Maybe we should have walked out the front door, you’d have probably been quieter.” She said, with a laugh as she began climbing her way down to the ground.
Thirty minutes passed and they were on the edge of town. There were a few abandoned houses in the area that were considered the best party places in Salem. The walls were littered with graffiti, the windows were busted out, all while nature took it’s course in reclaiming the area. The music blasted, the scent of weed filled the air, and everyone had a cup with some sort of alcohol in it. Some kids could be seen playing with a ouija board, others were spray painting pentagrams and sigils on the walls, in true Salem kid fashion. Lux wasn’t sure how long she had been at this party -  so many times they all ran together in a huge blur. Not that Lux was complaining, it beat being home.
All of the sudden, there were Sirens. Lux downed the remainder of her drink, and tossed the cup on the ground. “Cops!” She heard someone yell. The music cut, and in a rush, all the teenagers began running out of the house. Cops catching a few repeat offenders. She thought she was home free, she was going to get herself home and pretend she didn’t even go to the party - until she felt a cold handcuff around her wrist. “What the hell?” She asked as she was pulled back and cuffed. “I didn’t even do anything, let me go!” She yelled, and the policeman just shook his head. “I’ve got strict orders for you, Ms. Devereux.” He spoke, and opened the door to his car. She could run, but that wouldn’t do her any good. She got in the car, with a loud exhale of breath, as she sunk down in the seat.
There were many things that fifteen year old Lux Devereux planned on doing. Sitting in a police station behind bars was not  anything that she had even considered doing. She was no longer cuffed, and they hadn’t even put her in a cell. She just sat there, at the desk of the cop who caught her. “When can I leave?” She asked. “I don’t want my parents finding out.” She muttered, before she heard her father walk in. “Too late, Lux Spencer.” He said, his arms folded across his body. He had never liked the idea of her going out, especially with boys who were older than she was. Not to mention the drugs and alcohol. “Dad, can you not just let me be a kid?” She asked as she stood up. “It’s not like you never went to a party.” She mumbled under her breath. She wasn’t sure what was worse. Getting detained by a police officer, or the fact that it was her father’s idea to give her a scare. It’s like he wanted her to be perfect, which wasn’t something that he would ever see in her. She was a witch, just like her mother. He was only trying to hold it back for as long as he could.
The got home, and Lux started up the stairs, hearing the same, “You’re grounded” that she had heard so many times before. Not like it’d stop her. She had another party to go to the next night, but this time, she wouldn’t get caught.

In the light of the Moon.
The feet of a twelve year old Lux Devereux ran through the woods ahead of everyone else. Where was she going? A meeting place, behind the cemetery in the woods. It was a clearing, with a lake and a perfect view of the moon. “Lux, be careful out there!” Her mother yelled out behind her, still crawling through the trees. Lux hit the clearing, she knew her way like the back of her hand. She had been coming to this ritual since she was six years old. This time, she would get to recite some of the ritual for the first time. Other kids, teenagers and adults alike came into the clearing, a certain summer noise filled the air while all the witches chattered excitedly for what was to come. Lux stood beside her mother and her aunt, practically bouncing out of her skin. In the time that Lux grew up, it became very clear that her mother, aunt and grandmother were people of importance to the witch community. They were the light witches, the descendants of Rebecca Nurse. Other people in the community were just as important. The Bishop’s, the Good’s and any other person who came from the families that lost an ancestor in the year of 1692.
“Get in your places!” Lux’s grandmother, Isabel called to everyone who would be performing the ritual. Everyone who stood in the four corners, North, East, South and West were 12 to 15 years old. This was their first times conducting a ritual. Piper then handed candles to all of the kids. Green, red, blue and yellow. Lux had red. Now, it was time for the ritual to begin. First went north, which represented the powers of the earth. Then east, which was the powers of air. Then, it was Lux’s turn. She had spent the last two weeks practicing this. She didn’t want to screw it up. Once the person on her right performed their part and placed the candle on the altar, Lux began, candle facing towards the sky.
“We call upon the powers of Fire,
and welcome you to this circle.
May the shining light of this season's moon
illuminate our way at night,
as the sun has brightened our lives by day.”
She placed the candle on the altar, stepped back and watched as the powers of water recited their part. Once they were finished, they walked back to their families and everyone began in unison.
‘We gather tonight by the light of the moon,
to celebrate the season, and rejoice.
May the next turn of the Wheel bring us love
and compassion, abundance and prosperity,
fertility and life.
As the moon above, so the earth below.”
Now, twelve years later - Lux was walking through that same spread of woods, to come out at the same beautiful clearing, with a perfect view of the moon. This time, she had Kaden on her hip. She watched as the new generation of witches did what she had done what felt like a lifetime ago. She was glad to see that some things in Salem, never change.

Loss:
lôs,läs/
noun
the fact or process of losing something or someone.
Quite a funny thing, loss is. I’ve gone through my entire life losing things left and right. Growing up, I’d lose a toy, or a beloved family pet would pass on. I would feel pain, but recover, like any other resilient child. It wasn’t until I was nineteen, that I truly experienced my first, life changing loss. I will never forget that night. Naturally, I was just coming in from a graveyard party, and my mother was sitting in the living room. Wailing. My father was embracing her, his face feigning a look of sorrow. “What is it?” I said, stepping through the threshold between the entrance of my childhood home to the living room. “Karma. Karma’s dead.” My father choked out, and my face fell. “No. No I saw her a few hours ago, she’s fine.” I could feel tears stinging my eyes. My relationship with my sister was anything but good. Half the time I was sure that we hated each other, but, she was still my sister. I ran to her room, it was dark, the air was stiff. She was gone, I could feel it. Days later, the funeral happened. The previous night? I had taken a pregnancy test. Positive. I needed to get out of Salem. So, I did. I ran, I ran and I ran and I ran. My sister wasn’t the only thing that I lost. Interestingly enough, I never truly lost her. It was only a sick prank that my asshole father, and Levi Proctor had pulled. I will never forgive them for what they did to my mother. Our family was fucked up as it was. What they did was cruel.
I knew that when I left Salem, my problems wouldn’t go away. I would get my heart broken in more ways than one. What I didn’t know, was that the world outside of Salem, Massachusetts would shatter me beyond repair. Loss of love is something that I’ve had a surplus of. It follows me around like a serpent waiting to strike. In some ways, I think I’ve been cursed. In other ways, I think that I was not made to be loved. I know that sounds dramatic, but.. In the last few years, and even now, alone-ness has been my best friend. My one true love is my son, and from there - I don’t know what else is waiting for me. My heart is tired, I’d like to give up.
I made the most wonderful friends on my journey, two of which being Kaylie and Trent Warner. Kaylie was like the sister that I had always wished for. Someone who loved me despite my flaws. Trent, was the only stable male figure in my life, and in Kaden’s life. He still is. I think losing them is what broke me beyond repair. I spent the last four years of my life growing with them. Seeing the world with them. Now all of that is gone, and I am faced on a daily basis with memories that grow more and more distant every day.
I suppose you can say that my life has been full of loss. Multitudes of relationships, and friendships that have blown away in the wind of life. I guess that’s what growing up is, I’ve just got an extraordinary gift of losing more than most people can handle.

Memories: Sage Cleanse
Sickness. Decay. Death. Gibsonton. Plague.
“Kaden is having nightmares again.” Lux spoke quietly, as she walked throughout the dingy hotel suite that she claimed as her home. “Tell me what happened again, Lux, I can help.” Piper spoke, her tone caring. “Dead, rotting bodies in a pit in the middle of the woods.” Lux breathed, looking back to Kaden’s door, she had just laid him down again. “And these deaths.. It was Kaylie, correct?” Piper asked, and Lux rolled her eyes. “It’s her job mom, can we focus on how I can get these vibes out of the air? I could be sick, feeling them.” Lux murmured to her mother. “I already hate it here. I need to be able to breathe.” She said into the phone, and she heard her mother moving, then flipping through a grimoire. Lux grabbed a pen, and pulled out her own grimoire to take notes.
The next day, Lux was travelling through the forest with a large tote bag on her shoulder. It was nearing dusk. She wondered how a six year old, four year old and three year old got through the overgrown forest. Obviously it had never seen the destruction of men. Lux had just gotten out of quarantine. For a week, everyone in the compound was locked in her bar. Throwing up blood, fevers and paranoia with a mix of madness. The little ones were put into a medically induced coma. Lux wished it was that easy for her. Unfortunately, she had to stay conscious, listening to the bitching and moaning of all the other people in the compound. On top of feeling the weakness and horror of this virus, most were also going through withdrawal. From one source. The mass grave.
She approached the grave, gagging at the smell. Haunted by the words that her god-daughter had said about the ghosts in the woods. Upon looking in the grave, she saw what Dex, Kaden and Luna had seen. Rotting corpses, maggot infested bodies, rats feasting on the flesh of the dead. “Oh god.” She said quietly to herself, looking back in the direction of the compound. “I’m so sorry.” She apologized to the dead, before pulling out her sage, lighter and water. She set the sage on fire and once it had a nice flame, she began. “Air, water fire, earth, cleanse, dismiss, dispel.” She said aloud, splashing water into the grave. She repeated this until she got all four corners of the grave, and came back to her original standing point.
The vaccine had been administered, the  compound was in the clear. All that Lux was doing was setting the souls of the dead free, so there wouldn’t be any ‘unknown’ activity happening around the compound. A cleansing ritual was the best way to clear the air from any bad thing that was coming their way.
Maybe that didn’t exactly work, according to plan, but the memory played through Lux’s mind constantly, especially now that she was back in Salem. Out of the many Wiccan based things that she did in Gibsonton, she hoped that this was the most helpful, to anyone who else might find themselves in the Funhouse.

A blood curdling scream resonated through the woods behind the Burying Point Cemetery. The night was cold, and lightning filled the sky, and rain poured. A wicked storm for a wicked night, Lux assumed as she barreled through the woods, her bare feet tortured as she ran past sticks and thorns. Her head turned and he hazel eyes focused behind her. She was looking for him, he was going to kill her. Heavy pants escaped her body, and her heart was on the verge of exploding. She turned back to look ahead of her and a tree branch whipped her face, leaving a deep, bleeding scratch on her face. She continued through the woods, slipping and sliding in the mud as it formed under her feet. She had grown up in these woods, she knew them like the back of her hand - yet, she couldn’t find her way out.
It seemed like hours passed and she finally broke free from the forest. The rain that fell was like icicles stabbing into her skin as she continued to run. She weaved past the graves of the dead, glancing back again, he was still behind her. She hadn’t noticed that in her time of running, she had started crying. It felt like knives were stabbing into her lungs. She needed to get to her home. That’s all she could think of. She ran through the streets of Salem, freezing, soaking wet and in sheer panic. She turned the corner to the street of the home she shared with her family.  She felt safe, if even for a split second as she ran up the front porch steps.
A feeling of dread filled her when she saw that the front door was open. She pushed the door completely, and slowly stepped inside. Everything felt different, she could feel evil inside. She slowly crept up the stairs, keeping check of her surroundings. She ran up to the attic where she practiced her craft, and shut the door behind her. She breathed, but heard a low, evil sounding chuckle. “Little Witch.” She heard, and she turned around to see Seth, but.. It wasn’t Seth. It was something much darker than her boyfriend. Something truly evil.
“I didn’t think you’d have the balls.” Lux said, in a sarcastic tone, with a chuckle. “Killing the mother of your child.” She shook her head. “I guess our happy ever after wasn’t something you ever planned.” She spoke, and the figure moved, but instead of steps - it seemed to glide across the floor. It’s icy cold thumb wiped the blood from her cheek, and to no surprise, licked the blood from it’s skin. “You’re sick.” Lux whispered, as she backed herself away from the creature, which only seemed to make it angry.
It was if scenes of a movie switched, and Lux was fighting with the creature who had taken over her boyfriends body. It worked for awhile, she kept herself alive, until he pulled out a blade. Lux saw it as it came down, she screamed.
Lux shot up in her bed, screaming at the top of her lungs before she realized that it was only a dream. She was breathing quickly and she was dripping with sweat, but freezing. She looked to her side, to see Kaden sleeping beside her. Seth was nowhere in sight. She laid back down, and touched her fingers to her cheek where the branch had hit her in her dream. It was wet to the touch, and it stung. She lifted her fingers, to see blood. Taking a deep breath, she brought her son closer, to comfort her from the recurring dream that had gone on for weeks now. Only this time? There was proof that more going on than the eye could see.

Storylines:
Karma:  It’s very tense between the sisters, in any situation. Lux was always the “good” sister, regardless of her own reckless behavior. Their father especially gravitated towards Lux more than Karma, although Lux has always preferred her relationship with her mother. When Karma popped up in Salem again after being “dead” for four years, Lux moved from Amsterdam, back to Salem. Though the girls still don’t get along, Lux and Piper decided it would be best for Lux to hire Karma as the bartender of the Witch’s Brew.
Levi: Growing up, Lux and Levi paid no mind to each other, growing up. He was the older kid, who scored the alcohol and drugs at the parties they went to, and their only connection with each other was Seth. Little did Lux know, Levi was sneaking around with Karma. Had she known of their relationship, she would have stopped Levi from getting into any legal trouble, being seven years older than Karma. Now, with him being ever present in her life, and knowing more and more about him with each passing day, Lux can’t say that she’s enthralled with the idea of Karma still latching onto him.
Jasper: These two were lovebirds all through their adolescence. Everyone in Salem knew that in order to find one, they’d need to find the other. After Karma’s funeral, Lux ran away. What she didn’t tell Jasper, was that it was partially because she was pregnant with his child. Lux had worked her hardest to get Jasper into a lighter state of mind, but when he left he fell into the darkness. Now, he’s a cult leader and they have a four year old together. A four year old son, to make the whole cult practice even worse. The two can hardly stand to look at each other now, but old habits sometimes die hard, especially when there is  a kid in the picture.
Sabrina: Lux and Sabrina met after Lux moved out of Salem. Sabrina was actually her roommate for the longevity that she lived in Brooklyn. Like everyone in her life though, Lux left Sabrina. She packed up and left when her bar was burned down, and never looked back. Now that Sabrina is in Salem, Lux has a lot of explaining to do. Even more so than she already had.
Corinne: Lux has always known Corinne, with having lived in Salem for the first twenty years of life. Lux helped Piper in teaching Corinne her practice. She helped Corinne learn all that she could with light magic, but could see that Corinne was bored with the innocence. Lux began to help Corinne dabble in darker magic, for her own selfish desires and curiosity. She helped in any way that she could, without actually performing any of the spells or rituals. Now that Lux is back in Salem, she looks to Corinne in hope that the secret of Lux being interested in a darker practice doesn’t get out to the public.
Treasure:
Atlas: Atlas and Lux share one common thing in life, and that is Corinne. Lux has known Corinne for the majority of her life and considers the girl to be one of her closest friends in Salem. With this connection, Atlas knows how loyal Lux is. He also knows she’s a person he can trust. The two have a quiet bond, of her helping him decipher witchy things that he does not understand. They’ve found common ground with Corinne, and luckily for Lux, Atlas isn’t the worst snake she could be dealing with.
Lennox: Lennox and Lux have a very understanding relationship. Both of them are the Switzerland’s of Salem. They prefer to stay in the light, but have assisted in doing things in the dark. They also have a connection to the cult, that neither of them are too thrilled about. Lennox sells to the cult, which ultimately assists in their rituals, which she doesn’t support. Lux’s connection is a little more intimate, with the fact that Jasper LaVey is the father of her son. Now the two are in a coven together, and thank.. whatever higher power you believe in.
Dinah:  Being that they're opposites of each other it could also form a very interesting friendship. Dinah is someone who likes to toy with people. She could even at times coax Lux into tapping into the dark side. Lux on the other hand is trying to help Dinah in her ‘maternal’ nature and looks past the fact that Dinah is doing so with her. It’s a strange bond, but the two seem to work it out.
Evelyn:
Dollie:
Jackson:
Stevie: Lux has rented out the apartment above the bar to Stevie. For some reason she felt an enormous amount of trust with the girl from the get go. The two have a civil relationship, and Stevie tells Lux if anything goes on at the Brew without her knowledge when it’s late at night, and everyone has seemingly gone home.
Aleks:
Avery: Lux and Avery have known each other the majority of their lives. Avery wasn’t much older than Lux, and in high school the two befriended each other. Lux knew that he was the quiet kid. The one that people thought was weird, but she loved spending time with him. That all changed after graduation, when Lux left for Brooklyn. She didn’t tell anyone that she was leaving, including Avery, which makes for a strained relationship between the two now.
