Joust Horsin' Around
2K posts
This blog will follow the partnership between myself and my horse, as we train toward mounted combat and cavalry manoeuvres. Expect to see posts ranging from sword/spear/lance/poleaxe diagrams and technique discussion to horse training, behaviour, and general care; and quite a few photos of Maggie, along with descriptions of what we are working on and what we've accomplished. About Me: I am a horse trainer, and Historic European Martial Arts (HEMA) instructor. My primary riding discipline is dressage, though I spent time in hunter/jumper land for a while. Within the HEMA realm, I primarily teach from a manuscript written in the early 1400s by a man named Fiore, though I am also enamoured with smallsword. I am well and truly horse-crazy. About My Horse: Maggie is a 25 year old Belgian Draft mare. Prior to our meeting, she was a heavy plow horse for a local amish farm. She ended up in a meat auction and was purchased by a draft horse rescue group in December of 2017. It is now March of 2018, as of right now she has some basic trail riding experience in addition to her driving training.

“ You might think you’re tough, but are you breastfeed your baby then go into battle tough? “
Found here.
And if you are interested in learning how to fight in armor check out  HEMA Harnischfechten and Knyght Errant and the armored section of the wiktenauer website and the  Gladiatoria: Fighting in Armor youtube playlist.
This does seem to be an HMB fighter not a HEMA one though and in case you’re interested in that you still might want to see the playlists above but also  Battle of the Nations and Battle of the Nations - Women League

Hidden secrets of Yale’s 1491 world map revealed via multispectral imaging
The map, which dates to about 1491 and depicts the Earth’s surface from the Atlantic in the west to Japan in the east, is dotted with descriptions in Latin of various regions and peoples.
[…]
Perhaps the most interesting revelations, say the researchers, concern southern Africa. By studying visible river systems and legible place names, Van Duzer had previously determined that Martellus based his depiction of the region on the Egyptus N[MC1] ovelo [BL2] map, which survives in three manuscripts of Ptolemy’s “Geography.” The Egyptus Novelo used geographical data from native Africans, not European explorations. It is thought that the map was based on information shared by three Ethiopian delegates to the Council of Florence in 1441.
The new images show that the Martellus map’s depiction of southern Africa extends further east than the known versions of the Egyptus Novelo do, suggesting that the German cartographer was working from a more complete version of the map that showed the eastern reaches of the continent.
“It’s a seminal and tremendously important document of African mapping by the people of Africa, in this case preserved by a western source,” says Van Duzer.

This is a part of why it’s so important that we constantly interact with and reexamine historical documents, artworks, maps, and objects.

“The full extent of MHC haplotype variation in the entire Icelandic horse population horses is unknown, but conceivably could number in the hundreds,” says Antczak. “This was unexpected. It has led us to believe there is a genetic shuffling mechanism in place to drive this diversity.”
“That mechanism, they pose, is a place in the chromosome where the genes physically cross and break off, forming fresh new combinations — known as ‘recombination’ in geneticist speak. Antczak and other horse geneticists believe the MHC may be a recombination hot spot in the horse genome, keeping those genes fresh even in the face of diversity-diminishing circumstances such as natural disasters or remote islands.”

“Raggie” The Warhorse, An Autobiography’, 1931
“Ragtime or Raggie was Major Guy Willoughby’s (later Lord Middleton) Arab horse, ridden in the Middle East and India during World War One (1914-1918).
Written in 1931, the ‘autobiography’ covers Raggie’s life, from his birth in 1910 through foalhood in India; distinguished service in Mesopotamia (modern day Iraq) during the First World War; the Arab revolt of 1920; polo and hunting; later life in India to his final retirement in Yorkshire, England.”
—–
Raggie was likely a half-Arab, his sire a full Arab from the desert and his dam an Indian-bred horse of mixed genealogy. Regardless, it’s a fascinating look at some of the historical horses peppering equine history.

A few days ago I went to guédelon and it was the most amazing thing ever
Over the last twenty years they have been working on building a medieval fortress by hand with building methods that would have been used in the 13. century. They expect to be done in about six or seven years
The castle is ‘standardized’ because about a thousand castles were build at the same time by King Phillip II. as a defnece against the english
Tumblr media
It already looks beautiful just like that
Tumblr media
The even move the stones around on little carriages that have to be moved by two people
Tumblr media
Even all the safety structures are made by hand and out of wood (while they are safe just like that, they have to be screwed together as well so they are up to today’s standards)
This will be the highest and most secure tower where the owner would escape to, should the castle be under siege. It has its own water and works mostly independent from the rest of the castle.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These are the wheels used to lift the stones and get them to the top of the wall. They are still moved by people walking inside and the only thing they added was a break so it’s safer otherwise this is a complete reconstruction
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The small chapel has the most beautiful window which was made completely by hand and it’s so symmetrical it’s unbelievable
Also there was a little nest of swallows in the chapel which made it extra amazing
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The great hall is the only room with very big windows which made the room very lovely and bright. Below the great hall is the storage connected to the kitchen. Above the kitchen behind the great hall is a guest room which would be the warmes room since the cooking fire would be burning below it.
Tumblr media
The guest room also had beautiful paintings and the even made the pigment for it themselves
There was so much more and it was so interesting I could have stayed there forever. Anyone who is interested in medieval history and has a chance to go there should definitely do that
I’m gonna stop now because tumblr won’t let me add any more pictures and I have way too much to say about this because they showed so much amazing stuff

Some resources for debunking transphobia in sports, historical fencing included.
Originally found here in  QT HEMA - Group
“Ok folks so this is a post for some debunking of transphobia related to specifically sports, exercise, working out.
There’s lots of other aspects of transphobia in society generally and there’s lots of further nuance to various issues in society concerning how to best approach some issues but let’s clear up the common bullshit we hear about trans folks, more specifically trans women in sports.
The resources listed here aren’t things I wrote, just collected and laid out. Sadly not all of it uses proper inclusive language all the time but most of it does and  overall we have a lot of useful info here.
What’s this post for?
So that if you are arguing with a transphobic person that’s trying to claim that trans women have some unrealistic unfair advantage in sports you have some specific evidence and resources to counter that.
And just as much for anyone who simply doesn’t understand the science and cultural issues behind it and wants to educate themselves.
It’s ok to not know-society as it is today teaches us a lot of oppressive viewpoints and ideas, and it can be difficult to shake that off,but it is our job to do so to the best of our abilities. And it should not be the burden of those oppressed to keep proving their humanity but on us all to do our best. With that in mind here’s a number of links.
Not only a great, but also most comprehensive breakdown of the issue covering various points often raised in conversations of the topic, breaking them down and showing how they’re wrong that I found. Backed up by 96 links in the references, which on their own do deserve to be checked out if you have the time.
Also includes some suggestions as to how best to try and approach this going onwards.
https://www.barbellmedicine.com/blog/shades-of-gray-sex-gender-and-fairness-in-sport/
Next we have https://www.transathlete.com/
From their homepage "transathlete is a resource for students, athletes, coaches, and administrators to find information about trans inclusion in athletics at various levels of play. This site pulls together existing information in one central location, and breaks down information into easy-to-reference areas to help you find what you need. Contributions to this site are appreciated. ”
Lots of valuable info that can be found there on various parts of the website
There’s also
youtube
“Refuting The Anti-Trans Pseudoscience On Trans Athletes RE: Rationality Rules” a nearly 50 minute video described by the creato like so “There are a lot of misconceptions about trans athletes going around, something not helped by a recent video by Rationality Rules. Today we take apart said pseudoscience whilst also investigating the social impact of the current trans hysteria."
Furthermore there are the often mentioned IOC guidelines used in Olympics which are one of the greatest if not the greatest, biggest sports competition in the world, and can be used as a metric-if one of the most competitive sports environments can be at least somewhat trans inclusive why would it make sense for various other spaces not to?
They are not perfect,I’d argue they are in some ways behind the conclusions of the first article noted here and the other two links after it but they can be used as a guideline alongside the links above if for no other reason than because they are a recognized world wide sports event and can help institutionalize trans inclusiveness in sports where that might otherwise prove to be difficult due to transphobia around us.

"This piece on Caster is SO useful, and she is cis, but it delves deeply into how so many of the assumptions around hormones and sex difference are really quite unscientific.”
https://sportsscientists.com/2019/05/on-dsds-the-theory-of-testosterone-performance-the-cas-ruling-on-caster-semenya/
A few other resources to keep in mind are the fb page
https://www.facebook.com/decolonizingfitness/
It’s not dedicated purely to debunking transphobia but that’s one of it’s aspects.“
And do check out the  QT HEMA page as well.

Howdy Y'all!
This is my new blog for weapons and armor, feel free to ask me anything. I know the most about how weapons were constructed, but I also am fairly knowledgeable about weapon usage and history.
I'm also teaching myself to blacksmith so expect posts about that
