Pre-session Latula and Mituna! I've wanted to take a crack at designing what the alpha trolls were like before their session (and before all the bad things that made them worse) happened, so here's the first two of that series. I call this my Preforus AU.
They're still in their flirting stage here.

ok i dunno about anyone else but to me this makes it sound like the condesce forcefully sorted the trolls under her rule into blood castes, rather than this being an inherent part of troll society, i feel like so many people in the fandom see the blood caste as something thats like some ineffable fact of troll society but im not convinced it existed before hic, i think she literally killed off anyone who she couldnt categorize into neat blood castes sorted by hue and ability, like i know the overarching EUGENICS is obvious to anyone who takes a single glance at troll society, but "mutantblooded" literally is not a thing its propaganda, i think that condy has selectively killed off members of castes with abilities that dont conform to her ideals in order to make a more strict and visible line between castes? maybe this is obvious to everyone else and im stating the obvious here but to me this stuff goes hand in hand with like what people consider in homestuck oc creation so im thinking about it a bit harder along with the whole classpect thing anyway ramble over i think this got my point across

hello gamers do you remember my poll from last time about "which colors are too desaturated to count as blood"
it turns out. there are a solid few of them that DUPLICATE in the rows that are too dark (through v10-v0) so if we say that columns s10-s0 are too desaturated then i can chop those ones out of the list of "naturally occuring" (as in, Non Mutated) rollable results. and then 5 rows and 5 columns will be gone and since there's 35 of each of those now it will be more even. and then there will be 30 that i'll need to divide up into grid sections because i am emotionally attached to my enneants idea (quadrants but there's nine of them)
the very middle column mathematically is sv49 but then that makes Nice Neat Even Quadrants. but i like my nines. i just am incredibly timezoned and cannot be assed to space them out right immediately now

After a few weeks, my pet project base is finally complete... And it was so big I had to split it in half to post to Tumblr so you can actually see what each outfit looks like.
But anyway, here it is! Every outfit from homestuck that has been sprited, including some that weren't, and also a good selection of original outfits made by me! I hope you guys enjoy this- I spent so much time on this but seeing the finished base come together is very satisfying. You can save the image here, but you can also save the full image from my ToyHouse here: LINK
Note: I will be moving all my bases to toyhouse from now on and will no longer be updating deviantart.
As with all my bases, this one is free to use for any reason: personal sprites, commissions/adopts, fanventures, anything at all! Just remember to credit me ^^

Hello, I hope this isn't a bother. In response to an ask of mine (a vague thought regarding the morphological connection between HIC's title and 'descent' as lineage) @/dingodad mentioned that you've written about the significance of characters ascending and descending. I was wondering if you had a tag for that or a post you could point me to. Ty!
These days, I mostly discuss the "condescension" of HIC in relation to race -- in the spirit of Deep Impact, Homestuck takes Obama's election as occasion to riff on racist fears of black presidents. I summarize that view here and here, but the most involved discussion is still Slurquest.
The other angles focus on John's fear of heights... much of that is in Slurquest (because talk of social anxiety and the 4th wall is linked to race) though there's a more concise version here. There's also some commentary about the rise and fall of Dad's car in this post about June motifs...
And here's a post about some Tower of Babel motifs that riff on the narrative that the LOW should stay far away from the MOST HIGH, or else... which is also one way to apprehend Dave getting kicked down the stairs by Bro, and his various hangups that are downstream of that. The story's just kind of saturated with discussions of hierarchy, you can find this stuff everywhere

WIP II ! Progress update on the very big base (tm), trolls' alt outfits, the cherub twins + the handmaid's sprited outfit have been finished. I forgot that the alphas had their trickster outfits + John's trickster outfit so I'll be spriting that next too.
I'm also starting to fill out the "originals" section, starting out with outfits that's technically from Homestuck but isn't classically sprited, starting with The Handmaid's dress.

HSH - April Prompt + Server Opening
Welcome to April. This month I've based the prompt around the beta kids for 4/13 :)
Aaaand, since we've got a mod team together, Homestuck Hangout is now a formally open server! The invite below should not expire (though if it does, I should have one somewhere in my pinned post.)
If you're new around here this is my sprite server based around sprite games and, as you can see, my monthly prompt. You don't need to be a spriter to join it!
This month's prompt:
Make a set of sprites based on or around the beta kids! This can be swaps of them or OCs based on them, or something else!
If you get bored with that you can always expand out to other groups.
Lumith June in the artwork is made by @lepiosprites!
If you'd like to contribute a suggestion to next month's prompt, you can do so at this form (linked)!

15 sprites of Jane Crocker! I made the above prompt list mostly to motivate myself to sprite for fun more, but hey, if anyone wants to borrow it for themselves, feel free! Just, you know, tag me cause I would love to see 👉👈
For the fanspecies prompt, I made a new fanspecies- Fairy! I hope to develop it more soon. The costume prompt is based on Patissiere Peach from Princess Peach Showtime, and the free space sprite is a resprite on a very early Jane sprite I made.

There's a particular quality to early-to-mid Homestuck that I really loved when I first read it, but which I tend to forget when thinking about the story retrospectively.
This quality of like . . . taking pre-established elements, and building larger structures out of them. And then repeating this recursively, as these larger structures now become "pre-established elements" unto themselves.
A camera zooming further and further out from the same central point, "Powers of Ten"-style.
----
Homestuck is initially about the process of playing "Sburb," a fictitious base-building computer game.
The vast majority of comic pages in first 4 Acts are either about a character doing something in this game, or (if they are not yet a player) attempting to obtain and install it.
Everything else is secondary, at least formally, to this core activity. The main characters are always playing Sburb (or at least trying to), no matter what else they're doing. Dialogue is presented as a temporary side-stream overlaid onto the game; the characters play in silence unless they need to talk, and when they do talk, it's usually about the game.
This quality appears in the mechanics of Sburb. It's a game about combining things you have to make new ones ("alchemy"); about constructing a building by continually extending it at the edges; about making a tower that gets taller and taller, building on a pre-established foundation, using new components made from earlier ones.
And it appears, less literally, in the mechanics of the story. An element is introduced -- casually, weightlessly, accidentally -- and once introduced, it sticks. It gets brought back again and again, in a series of bigger and weirder riffs.
(John lived in a house, which we spent some time surveying. In the process, we learned about his father, who was his only caretaker. So now everyone has a single caretaker, and everyone lives in a house which we spend some time surveying. But with every iteration, the houses get bigger, the surveys grander, the caretakers more bizarre.)
Whimsical elements introduced very early on, like the "kernelsprite prototyping" mechanic, end up very deeply baked into everything. There's a palpable joy to the way the comic handles these things. A joy in doing something on a whim, and then committing completely to the bit, indefinitely; a joy in making mountains shaped like molehills.
This kind of dims away in the later, more "plot-heavy" portions that loom larger in my memory. There's a similar vibe to the way the plot elaborates upon itself, even much later on, but we lose this dynamic on the micro-level.
