Hi, yes I totally get it, a similar kind of oneshot would be great, Hank dealing with that kind of trauma because he was tryimg to protect someone and not talking about it even with everyone trying to help and understand him, and the Chapman thing would be great. Thank you so so much for taking the time to do it <3
whatever it takes
Hey! I apologize for the wait, it's been a long week and I've been dealing with some personal issues so I'm just getting to requests now. I hope you enjoy this :)
Intelligence had been working a serial killer case for a week now. Four kids between the ages of three and five had been abducted from their homes, all three days apart and all in Chicago. The kids turned up stabbed to death in various parks the day after they were taken.
So Intelligence was working with a small window between the children being taken, and turning up dead. One that seemed to be getting smaller and smaller every time the killer striked again.
Everyone was on edge as the unit usually was when it was a case involving children. They had no real leads which only made it worse. Whoever this killer was, they were careful and knew how to get away.
It was only when the fifth kid, a three year old boy named Nathan was taken from his front yard that morning, that Intelligence made their first arrest. A car had driven by Nathan’s house an hour before he was taken and again ten minutes before.
The car led him to Anna Clarke. She was home when they got there, in the middle of burning a teddy bear they soon figured out was Nathan’s. There was no doubt she was involved, they just weren’t sure if she was their killer or somebody involved with their killer like the look out.
They brought her back to the district as soon as she refused to talk, tossing her into the cage. After one look from Hank, the rest of the unit went back upstairs leaving Al and Hank with Anna who was silent in the cage, staring at them but refusing to say anything.
“Where’s Nathan, Anna?” Al asked, leaning against the wall.
Anna smirked but didn’t respond.
Hank slammed his hand against the cage, opening the door. “Who are you working with, Anna? We know you're not the one killing these kids, but you're protecting the man who is. Who is he?”
Anna tilted her head slightly, looking down at the watch on her wrist then back to them. “I think you guys should find that boy quickly. He’s running out of time. B was angry today, I don’t think that boy’s going to last long.”
“Who’s B?” Al asked, stepping forward now.
Anna didn’t respond at that, just turned back to Hank, her smirk growing wider. “You know what, I’ll tell you where he is, Sergeant. As long as you give me something in return.”
“We're not making deals,” Al started to say when Hank shook his head.
“Go upstairs, Alvin.”
Al stood up. “Hank.”
“Go, Al. If I’m not back in ten minutes then you can send the whole team down. Just give us ten minutes.”
“Hank, we can find Nathan,” Al said, but he knew it was useless.
“She’s right, we're running out of time. Give us ten minutes and we will find that kid.”
Later Al would wish he’d argued more. Even though he knew there was no changing Hank’s mind when he got like this. Which always happened with cases involving children, more so since Justin and Lexi’s death and Erin leaving Chicago. They had hit Hank harder since he lost his own kids.
They saved Nathan. Hank had come back up to the bullpen after nine minutes, Anna still in the cage. Within the hour they had found Nathan, still alive and arrested the man responsible. Brian “B” Stone was Anna’s boyfriend and the one actually committing the murders. They made easy work of him and by the time the sun went down, Anna and Brian were rotting in cells and Nathan was back with his family.
At the 21st district, Al, Antonio and Hank sat in Hank’s office where they’d been for the last hour.
It had been forty five minutes since anyone said anything. As soon as everything with the case was wrapped up, Al and Antonio had exchanged a look and headed into Hank’s office, shutting the door behind them.
It hadn’t taken a genius to figure out what happened between Hank and Anna. Well more of what Hank let happen. They were all cops, they knew what to look for.
And when the silence got to be too much, it was Antonio who bit the bullet and decided to say something.
“You let her rape you,” Antonio said. It wasn’t a question but Hank nodded anyway.
“I did what I had to do. She was clear with what she wanted and we all knew we were running out of time for Nathan. Stone would’ve killed him. He had no problem killing those other kids.”
“We could’ve kept running her. She was going to break soon,” Al protested, but they all knew they had no guarantees of that.
Hank shrugged. “I did what I had to.”
“There were other ways,” Antonio replied.
“Maybe. But it’s over, Toni. We got her and Stone and rescued Nathan. All those parents that lost their children got a bit of justice. So what I let her get what she wanted before she rotted in a cell for the rest of her life? It’s insignificant now.”
“Your pain isn’t insignificant, Hank. You think we don’t know why you did it? We do, but that doesn’t change anything,” Al said, his voice quieter now.
Hank stood up at that, gathering the files on his desk and not looking up as he spoke. “Well it’s over, Al.”
Al and Antonio watched silently as Hank left the bullpen, listening as his footsteps faded away. They knew it was going to be a long few weeks.
And that it was. It became clear that Hank wasn’t sleeping after what happened with Anna. He was working more than he had in years, not since Justin died and Erin left. Al, Antonio and Trudy all tried to talk to him, as well as the rest of the team but it didn’t do anything.
Al knew it wouldn’t. Hank wouldn’t talk about what happened, that was clear from the beginning. The most they could do right now was be there for Hank and stop him from running himself completely into the ground.
Al spent most nights at Hank’s now, silently helping him with whatever case he was working that night or just sitting next to him. Hank still let him in and that at least gave Al the ability to keep an eye on him.
Hank never talked about it overtime things seemed to get better. Hank stopped working excessive amounts and actually looked like he was sleeping again.
But Al had long since learned that good things rarely lasted. And it was no different this time.
It was around a year after the incident with Anna when Intelligence met Nina Chapman. At first she was like every other ASA that they’d come across in the ten years Intelligence had been running. It took about a month for everyone to realize she’d taken a liking to Hank.
A liking he didn’t return.
It took Al three days to realize Chapman looked an awful lot like Anna Clarke. And while Chapman did get on Al’s nerves a lot and was overbearing and seemed to be trying too hard to get close to Hank, her looking like Anna really wasn’t her fault. But it was a trigger. Especially as they approached the first anniversary of the incident.
That night Al cornered Hank in his office, making sure the door was closed before speaking. “Just tell me and I’ll get rid of her.”
Hank sighed, knowing what Al was talking about without him saying it. “She’s the ASA, you can’t just get rid of her.”
“Sure I can.”
“She looks like Anna.”
“I know she does.”
Hank finally put his pen down, looking up at Al with more vulnerable than Al had seen from his best friend in a long time. “I can’t do this right now, Al.”
“I know. And you don’t have to. I won’t harm her or anything, just make sure we deal with somebody else from now on. Intelligence and this district is your home, Hank, and you shouldn’t have to relive that day here just because she happens to look like Clarke.”
“I’m not ready to talk about that day,” Hank replied.
Al nodded. “I know. But I’m here when you are, alright?”
“Alright.”
Al nodded again, slowly standing up and heading to the door. He had some calls to make now. He just opened the door when Hank’s voice caused him to turn around.
“Al?”
“Yeah?”
“Thank you,” Hank said, his voice quieter now.
“You don’t have to thank me, Hank. Just don’t forget that I’m here.”
