Assignment Name: Character design part 3
Tools: Procreate, iPad
Description: the pirate Ini fighting on a shore going into a jungle, with ships and explosions behind her
Feedback: This was a bit rushed, but I think it could be really good with some further refining. I like the foreground and background elements all really working together to draw the eye to the character. I want to recolor it a bit, I think it could use some more contrast. I like the pose, but I do wish she felt a bit more in motion and had some more dramatic foreshortening with her front leg and the arm holding the gun, to make it feel like she’s really coming toward the viewer.
Sketchbook Composition descriptions:
Left- Evokes feelings of revenge, dark and moody, harsh light and shadows from the fire. Meant to feel like she lit the sail of your ship on fire and just turned to face you/ is about to cut you down
Right- references an etching of Anne Bonny, a famous female pirate who partly inspired this character. Chose this because it shows a lot more context of the world and gives off a feeling of adventure, with her cutting into the wilderness with explosions going on in the water behind her.

Assignment Name: Character Design Part Two
Description: Ini the pirate tying sail ropes, swinging her axe, and whittling wood
Notes:
Ini tends to be very reserved, calm, and collected. She generally keeps her cards hidden, always calculating and analytical. She is very skilled with her hands, she whittles in her free time to help her think (which she learned from her father who was a wood worker), and this helps quite a bit around the ship. Her outfits occasionally change, but since she lives on a ship she has very few outfit changes. She tends to wear simple, flowy clothes she can move around well in, and the bright madras patterns are a fabric popular in the Caribbean. She keeps her hair wrapped when working to protect it, and even when at rest she usually wears it up. She has freckles on her face from spending a lot of time in the sun. Wears lots of red/orange.

Assignment Name: Character Design Part 1
Tools: iPad, Procreate
Description: The pirate Ini in her late twenties. She is from a small island that takes Caribbean inspiration. The pattern on her waist fabric and head wrap are a madras pattern, which holds cultural importance in many Caribbean countries. She stores useful items in hidden pockets inside her waist wrap; the hilt of a gun can be seen on her right hip, and a dagger handle ar her back.
Feedback: I like the direction this character design is going. It needs some refining, but I think it makes her origins and occupation visually clear.

Assignment Name: Environment Design Part 3
Tools: Procreate, iPad
Description: A pirate captain’s cabin underwater in late afternoon, approximately 40 years after the ship wrecked near a coastline
Feedback: I wanted to create a strong contrast between this and the previous version. Where the original is warm and lively, this new one is cold and devoid of life, evoking an empty and tragic feeling.
Notes:
-Certain furniture like desks and cabinets are bolted to the floor and didn’t move in the wreck. Smaller props (bottles, lamps) were likely thrown around and broken.
-Very little sealife has grown in the wreck besides barnacles and algae- contributes to the feeling of lifelessness
-Finished mahogany (used in most of the cabin) is quite dense and takes a long time to fully decay underwater— keep this in mind when depicting the wood

Decorative globes— one with plants from around the world and one with different constellations. Not meant to be used for actual navigation purposes, the owner has them because she has an appreciation for their craftsmanship. They should be detailed but not gaudy.

Assignment Name: Environment Design Part 2
Tools: Procreate, iPad
Description: colored pirate captains cabin at nighttime
Feedback: I struggled a lot with the balancing the overpowering red of the mahogany paneling and furniture since it’s what took up the majority of the room, but the wood is what really makes it feel like a ship in my opinion. I think the green and yellow accents I chose go very nicely with the brownish red.
Notes:
Use lots of greens, reds, and yellows, jewel tones, should feel very warm and homey. Lots of mahogany wood paneling!
Space should feel like it has both feminine and masculine influences (ie lacy curtains, strong angles contrasted with floral embellishments, etc)
Refined and elegant decor; should feel luxurious without being overly frivolous
Bookcases, cabinets, etc. with locks! Ships move around a rock, so things should be secured/have a place to go when on rough waters
Late 17th/early 18th century European inspired decor

The Jolly Roger, called Rose of Death, of the main pirate crew in my story. It needs some refining but I’m really happy with the concept.

Assignment Name: Environment Design
Tools: iPad, Procreate, PC, Sims 4
Description: The captains quarters on an 18th century pirate ship
Feedback: I struggled a lot with this design— it was very difficult to find actual historical depictions of pirate ship interiors, most were fictional interpretations from movies and other media. I wanted this to look closer to reality rather than a caricature with gold and jewels laying around everywhere. I think I want to take a second try at this room design once I have fleshed out the captain character a bit more so it reflects her personality and values a bit better; it feels a bit generic at the moment, but I think the overall layout is pretty solid.

Assignment Name: Making Many from Few
Tools: Procreate, iPad
Description: A series of varying castle towers with three sets of three roofs, windows, and decorations
Feedback: I am pretty happy with how these came out. I went with a very simple, storybook style so all the elements would be visually cohesive and match the subject matter. My favorite decoration is definitely the ivy, it really brings the tower to life.

My water container is made up of moonstone. I imagined it being in a society that heavily worships the moon, so it is thought that moonstone has healing properties, and the purer and more luminous the moonstone is, the higher the water quality. Additionally, the stopper is made of pincushion moss, which helps with water quality and airflow. These containers also have little spigots at the bottom for easy water dispensing.

Assignment Name: Patterns from Particles
Tools: Procreate, iPad, Unity, PC
Desc: Particle effect simulating the thrill of first love
Feedback: This was very difficult— it seems like it’s easy to make a decent looking particle system, but very difficult to make a really great one. I started with about 6 sprites and slowly pared it down to 3 because it felt to cluttered and unclear. I think my end result conveys the feeling I was going for pretty well, but it did end up being kind of basic. I like the big heartbeat bursting into smaller hearts and stars to represent that first realization of love, and the swirlies being the last thing representing your head kind of spinning from said realization.

Assignment Name: Pixelizing Monstrosities
Tools: pixilart.com, PC
Desc: The mandarin duck in four pixel renderings
Feedback: In the past I’ve never particularly enjoyed doing pixel art, but this was actually pretty fun to do, and I like how they came out. I struggled the most with the 4 color 32x32 resolution- since the original design relies a lot on color, when that was limited I felt like it limited my shading a bit. I still ultimately think it turned out well, if not a little flat.

Assignment Name: Industry from Biology
Tools Used: Procreate, iPad
Desc: A sewing machine inspired by a pileated woodpecker
Feedback: I liked designing this because I actually know how to use a sewing machine, so I felt like I could incorporate actual mechanical components in clever ways. The tension knob is the eye and the lines around the eye of a woodpecker naturally align with with the thread guide and take-up. I also made the the bird’s tail into the reverse stitch lever. I like the concept of the base being wood, but I think it doesn’t look very thought out since I just put wood pattern on an otherwise standard sewing machine base. It was hard to think of how to make the base look more interesting though, since it is important that it is smooth and flat so fabric doesn’t snag on it. I am still ultimately happy with the idea since I think it is cute, and the silhouette I chose reads well.
