Assignment Name: Pixeling Monstrosities
Tools: Dotpict, iPad
Desc: Pixelized renderings of my fantasy creature Catreat under 4 different constraints.
Feedback: I genuinely really liked how these came out. The 8x8 and 16x16 ones were hard, as it felt like conveying the cat aspect without making it look almost fox like was a bit difficult, but I still think I pulled it off nicely enough and they came out cute. My 32x32 ones are definitely my favorites, as I felt like I really got down the features that make my creature the way it is. I tried to mainly avoid black outlines for most of my renderings since I’m used to that style, and I really like how it gave off a completely different vibe (especially the 4 color vs. no color limit 32x32). Though I will say because of that, I had to make Catreat’s fur more cream than off-white for the no color limit so it could be read better against the white background, though honestly I don’t mind it at all.

assignment 4: pixelizing monstrosities
tools: mac, aseprite, mouse
description: created pixelized versions of my roombug pokémon from last week's sketch, in varying sizes + color constraints
feedback: i really like how the third one came out, given the constraints. i think it really accurately shows what i was going for! and although the fourth one's animation is a bit rushed and i'm not too happy with the colors, i think it still has character and shows how roombug moves, accurate to how i envisioned it.
for improvements, i think i could make the last one more detailed color-wise, perhaps adding some gradients or making it clear that it's body is made of plastic and metal. i think it loses a lot of the details that make it look clearly like a roomba, so i'd like to add those back!

Pixelize - Bote
Done by Aseprite
I actually think the hardest thing to get beaten into this attempt is the 8X8 pixel art, you'd be hard pressed to get a clear picture with just four shades in such a confined amount of pixels, then you'd have to choose to shed some unnecessary elements in the process.
Also I think 32X32 pixel art is a bit of a challenge, compared to 8X8 where you know you're limited by the number of pixels, then in 32X32 you need to incorporate more elements and more colors to convey the message as much as possible, a difficult process. For example, in the 32X32 painting where I chose the colors at random, I tried to use the colors to express more details, which helped me to show what I wanted to express more easily.

Torque Medusae: Pixelated
Description: Pixelated versions of my creature from the 'fantasy creatures' assignment. (see below!)
Tumblr media
Tools Used: Aseprite
Versions: 8x8 (4 shades, monochrome), 16x16 (4 shades, monochrome), 32x32 (4 colors & no color limit)
Self-Evaluation: This was a bit challenging - especially the 16x16 version, and I think it's because it was the "midpoint" between a more detailed design and a super simple, tiny one. I enjoyed figuring out how to draw the creature in a way that kept its original shape but also made it seem like something that would vaguely belong in Stardew Valley (like a fish sprite, or a mermaid, anything that may belong on Ginger Island). I decided not to go crazy with the pose/silhouette and it really benefited me in the end, as it was simple and conveyed the original design well. The dithering process was my favorite :) I love the rendering on the body. I think the head could have been a bit more detailed but I was also trying to keep it true to size.

Assignment Name: Pixelizing Monstrosities
Tools: Aseprite
Desc: 4 pixel variations of a creature
Feedback: I originally sketched a refrigerator monster with swirls and squiggles giving it a face, arms, legs, and contents in the freezer. While the rectangular aspects were easier to capture, the stranger details were really hard to capture in pixels and grayscale. It was exciting when I got to use more colors and have more space to create more organic and bright visuals.

Assignment Name: Pixelizing Monstrosities
Tools: iPad, Procreate
Desc: Pixelated version of the Pyramidlican.
Feedback: It turned out I struggled with the 8x8 version the most. Abstraction is really hard and every pixel is crucial to the overall impression of the rendering.

Assignment Name: Pixelizing Monstrosities
Tools: pixilart.com, PC
Desc: The mandarin duck in four pixel renderings
Feedback: In the past I’ve never particularly enjoyed doing pixel art, but this was actually pretty fun to do, and I like how they came out. I struggled the most with the 4 color 32x32 resolution- since the original design relies a lot on color, when that was limited I felt like it limited my shading a bit. I still ultimately think it turned out well, if not a little flat.

Assignment 4
Tools: Procreate
Desc: Pixelize the characters we made last class in several different definitions.
Feedback: I struggled with figuring out what items could be left out and what should stay when doing the 8 by 8 size so I decided to start with the biggest version and work my way down, this allowed me to figure out what was and what wasn't needed in the smaller sized pixel drawings. Overall, I like how they all turned out but I do wish I had created a slightly easier monster for this assignment.

assignment name: pixelizing monstrosities
software: procreate
desc: 4 pixel sprites of different resolutions and color constraints for an original frying pan pokemon (original design pictured below)
feedback: the two smaller sprites were really hard for me to draw because the design i made is generally pretty rounded and it’s hard to round a sprite out with so few pixels. it was also hard for me to fit the spatula in the smaller sprites so i ended up omitting it in the 8x8 but including it in all the other ones. i had fun doing the last sprite that had no color constraints because i got to add the egg that was in the original sprite which was hard to include in the other versions because it’s not a separate part of the silhouette and also completely different colors. i resized the sprites so i could post the art but i think some of them mightve been stretched? hopefully not too much

Assignment Name: Pixelizing Monstrosities
Tools: Aseprite
Desc: 4 pixel variations of a creature
Feedback: Ba-yah (Sphoeroides bipeda) was created as a bipedal fish, drawing inspiration from pufferfishes and mudskippers. Its silhouette is egg shaped, topped with a dorsal fin that looks like a pompadour. The smallest resolution only allows for the representation of an uniform oval shape and the hair. The 16x16 version allows for the rendering of the pectoral fins, belly, dorky eyes and fish mouth, although the combination of mouth and hair makes it look like a chicken. The two 32x32 versions make small but important details possible, like the gills and body spikes, that, for the sake of readability, were enlarged from the original drawing.

A creature combining Sea Angels (Clione) with Spider Lillies.
The main focus is the Spider Lily-shaped head and the slug body, which are what I tried to keep throughout the pixel versions.
