For Zoya Onasi the jedi order was her life.

The Clone Wars turned her from a youngling to a padawan, but still she held no understanding of what the dark side could do. Until the night her Master leaves her to look after the younglings in the Temple and she watches her family be cut down one by one before her very eyes.

It is then and only then that Zoya truly feels the dark side flow through her. Only then does Zoya finally feel the full force of her abilities. It shatters her, and when her Master finds her sitting in a circle of dead clones with bloodshot eyes, he promises to help her. He sends her to Bogano, where Master Eno Cordova waits to train her. Where the dark cannot touch her.

For Cal Kestis he had no home but the jedi order.

The war was supposed to turn him from padawan to knight, but his grasp on the force continued to elude him even with his constant training. Until he fails to save Master Tapal from the betrayal of their battalion and he watches his master die before his eyes.

It is only then Cal can feel the force. Only then does the power at his grasp finally come into his control, but it doesn’t last long. Plunging to the planet of Bracca below, he cuts himself off from the Force before it can hurt anyone else. Before HE can hurt anyone else.

Orphaned by war and cut off from the Force, ZOYA ONASI and CAL KESTIS are stars in a system with no planets, drifting slowly while they wait out the oncoming storm.

Still a splinter of something remains, the last remnants of a force connection that neither of them could have expected. It pulls them together, tugging on something abandoned years ago, drawing Cal to a former Jedi Master and a Latero pilot and Zoya into a world she never thought she’d return to.

👗Dani the day of the crash

Oooh okay, so this might eventually change, but Dani is very conscious of the weather they're flying into (it is SEATTLE after all,) so, like Mari, she dresses comfortably for the flight. Her fur jacket ends up becoming part of her Gravedigger outfit later on, and her converse miraculously end up surviving everything out there.

This is mainly what I imagine her wearing, although her yellow top is a Yellowjackets tank top she cut into a crop top and she's wearing a pair of white converse.

👗 Willow Ash + the day she gets married

AWwww, wait this is so cute. It also gives me the chance to introduce a bit of Covey world building. An old saying in Covey culture is "The only day you'll see a covey girl free from color is the day she gets married." often referring to the fact that a) covey women love and adore their colorful fashions and b) many of them never took the traditional route when it came to marriage, often having small intimate ceremonies kept only between family.

Finnick and Willow Ash follow the latter. It's a very small affair. Obviously, everyone's still reeling from the war so there's not a lot of available clothes left and she doesn't feel comfortable wearing pure white. HOWEVER.

She does end up wearing a flow-y ivory dress with a tinge of grey. The veil, however, in true Covey fashion, is made up of the old ribbons of Lucy Gray's original rainbow dress and wildflowers decorate her hair.

This is mainly what I envision the dress looking like.

👗 Willow Ash + the day she got reaped

OOOH OKAY LETS GOO! It's one of my favorite outfits of hers and is FILLED with so much Covey symbolism.

Starting with the Dress: It's the same one Lucy Gray and Lenore Dove wear when they perform (Lucy Gray in the Hob in the books, and Lenore Dove with her ivory ribbon). It used to be bright lime green and belonged to Lucy Gray's mother, but faded into a sage after years of use.

Because it exists only on my imagination, the best approximation of what it looks like is the skirt and color of the first image with the neckline and bodice of the second (the ruffles have become shorter and worn after being frayed like the first picture and the sleeves were cut off and used to patch up other holes in the dress.)

Willow Ash wears her hair long and curly, but wears this orange scarf as a headscarf. (Yes that orange scarf, and no it's not a coincidence I put her in Katniss and Peeta's favorite colors). She also wears her classic brown boots, with primroses and doves burned into the leather. (the heels are regular length though).

She's just a plethora of color on the reaping and of course that, plus her appearance and resemblance to LG, instantly draws Snow's eye to her.

8, 9 and 10 for Dani - get to know your character

Describe the place where they sleep. (ie what does their safe space look like. How much (or how little) care / decoration / personal touch goes into it.)

It's absolutely a mess. Clothes strewn all over the floor, various soccer memorabilia and movie posters decorating her walls and shelves, with a vision board of what she wants her life to look like in the next year. On nearly every surface, there's either a half-read book or bursting sketchbooks and journals with differing sketches and half-written ideas and scrapbooks filled with her photos.

While the bulk of her room is made up of her own personal touches, there are some things her mom forced into her room (her vanity and dresser, her sheets and comforters, etc.) but she goes out of her way to decorate them in such a way that it makes it feel like hers.

What is their favorite holiday? (How do they relate to their culture/outside world. Also fun is least favorite holiday.) 

Christmas! She loves the twinkling lights and the snow and the trees, etc. Especially as a latino family, the Ibarras go all out on the 24th with large food platters, the whole extended family renting out a cabin on the mountain and visiting them. After the wilderness though, she refuses to celebrate it anymore.

What objects do they always carry around with them? (What do they need for their normal, day-to-day routine? What does ‘normal’ even look like for them.) 

Pre-Crash: her camera, phone, supplies to make friendship bracelets, a journal and pencil/pen, scrunchie. Post-Crash: Scrunchie, phone, pocket flask, pocket knife, pack of playing cards.

So my problem with most ‘get to know your character’ questioneers is that they’re full of questions that just aren’t that important (what color eyes do they have) too hard to answer right away (what is their greatest fear) or are just impossible to answer (what is their favorite movie.)  Like no one has one single favorite movie. And even if they do the answer changes.

If I’m doing this exercise, I want 7-10 questions to get the character feeling real in my head. So I thought I’d share the ones that get me (and my students) good results: 

What is the character’s go-to drink order? (this one gets into how do they like to be publicly perceived, because there is always some level of theatricality to ordering drinks at a bar/resturant)

What is their grooming routine? (how do they treat themselves in private)

What was their most expensive purchase/where does their disposable income go? (Gets you thinking about socio-economic class, values, and how they spend their leisure time)

Do they have any scars or tattoos? (good way to get into literal backstory) 

What was the last time they cried, and under what circumstances? (Good way to get some *emotional* backstory in.) 

Are they an oldest, middle, youngest or only child? (This one might be a me thing, because I LOVE writing/reading about family dynamics, but knowing what kinds of things were ‘normal’ for them growing up is important.)

Describe the shoes they’re wearing. (This is a big catch all, gets into money, taste, practicality, level of wear, level of repair, literally what kind of shoes they require to live their life.)

Describe the place where they sleep. (ie what does their safe space look like. How much (or how little) care / decoration / personal touch goes into it.)

What is their favorite holiday? (How do they relate to their culture/outside world. Also fun is least favorite holiday.)

Different anon here - I am obsessed with Willow and your take on the Covey culture. I prefer her to Lenore Dove tbh. But you need to set aside your problems and focus on writing when you can for the sake of your audience thanking you

Awww thank you! Unfortunately I was hit by the Ao3 curse (work is kicking my ass and I’m running very low on money to support myself) so it may be a while until her next update but asks like this definitely help!
