Perhaps the goat cheese ravioli?”

“to be fair, i can’t imagine ever getting used to ordering something that barely even sounds like food. i don’t think this is even the worst i’ve ever seen,” she says with a chuckle. “ooh, good find. i do love ravioli. maybe i’ll get it with the spring salad, since it sounds the second-most normal thing here.”

The world honestly depends on it,” she joked, putting herself back together - straightening her dress out and rolling her ankles. “Hopefully not an important class since I’ve made you late. The shoe is a little scuffed, but I know a guy who can buff that out in no time.”

“trust me, we’re on it,” she says, nodding in agreement. “it’s okay, it was an ESL class. international students are required to take it, even if we’re already fluent...? helping you out and complaining about the sidewalk was a better use of my time. and good, it would be a shame to lose such a cute pair.”

“We can be idiots together,” he chuckled, before frowning. “Yeah, sometimes I guess it does backfire if the person is going to be a jerk. I have had one thing before here that I can recommend. It was some kind of butternut squash ravioli dish. It was really good! But I couldn’t begin to tell you what the fancy-schmancy name is on the menu.”

"that actually does sound \good, i love ravioli. i used to eat it a lot back home.” a smile rests on her face at the thought. “they should have people like us naming the dishes on these things. so, you know, it’s idiot-friendly.” she chuckles. “is that what you’re getting? or are you trying something new, like these... artichoke bombs with whole sardine?”

“it literally does. fingers crossed this one isn’t our latest disappointment.” her eyes perk up at her suggestion. “i’m feeling merla mae’s. their vanilla bean is something else, and i feel like i need the comfort food right now.” the waiter comes over to their table and asks for their order. “we’ll both have the salmon, please. oh – did you want drinks, margaret?”

jules loves and thinks of the world of her mother, but it’s all complex. there’s some hidden resentment there because her mother knew she was unhappy with the career she’s been thrust in, and yet she encouraged her to keep going, even when her family was way beyond needing the help. as for her siblings, she takes care of and feels responsible for all of them, and misses them everyday.

As for the panini, it’s really good. It has eggplant, obviously, um…cheese, usually some kind of oil or vinegar…”

“ooh, so that’s what you call that pasta with the cute shape. got it. okay, but a panini... is like a fancy sandwich, right? i think i remember having one back home, it was pretty good. or no, wait – on second thought, it was probably just grilled cheese or something, never mind.”
