Lightroom Tutorial
I have decided to try a Lightroom tutorial since they keep coming up when I search for Photoshop tutorials. The first one I tried was the one from the previous blog when I was trying to convert a photo negative to a positive photo. First, I installed the wrong Lightroom, apparently there is a Lightroom and a Lightroom Classic. Since I have never used Lightroom before and there was a new update in Creative Cloud I guess they made two. I installed Lightroom and nothing matched the tutorial and I was having all kinds of trouble finding the tools they were talking about. When I finally realized there were two, I uninstalled Lightroom and installed Lightroom Classic. Everything started to match up and I started finding the right tools. Because I took so long trying to figure out the first one, I was so tired I didn’t finish the tutorial, but I think everything is better with this one so I will finish this tutorial later. https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=20&v=NM5XzDYfG60&feature=emb_logo

Converting a Negative to a Positive
In one of the boxes of old photos my aunt gave me was an envelope of negatives that didn’t have photos to them. I wanted to know if I could convert them to a positive picture so I could tell who was in them and possibly be able to tell how ole they were. I found a few tutorials that can help you do that, but two of them stood out the most one for tutorial for Photoshop and another one for Lightroom. I have never worked with Lightroom before, so I saved that tutorial in my bookmarks for later and went with the Photoshop tutorial. It was pretty easy to follow, just a few clicks and awesome a picture. The negative was faded a little, so the pictures didn’t come out perfect but good enough for me to figure out who was in the pictures and remember those days. I did find one of me and I do remember taking the picture, I was about 11 or 12 standing in my Bigmama’s dining room. I am loving this family tree project I am working on and I will love to share it with my children as they grow up. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4mdJ7gW7NtQ

I chose the Prezi platform, because I have never used it before. I have seen a presentation on it before and thought it was very interesting on how it was used so this made me want to try it. It was easy to use as long as you watch tutorials and follow them. You can also figure everything out by just playing around with it, but I feel I learned more by watching the tutorials. Prezi is definitely something I will be using again in the future, but I know I need to practice with it more to get more familiar with it. I have always been a PowerPoint user and I think maybe Prezi has helped me change my platform or at least know I have more than on to use. I also like how you can convert a PowerPoint presentation into a Prezi presentation, this was what helped me change my mind about using it. In the presentation, I decided to show how I started in the graphics field and show my artwork from the beginning. I only went with four designs, but I felt that was enough to show.

Halloween Pumpkin Carving Tutorial
I worked on a graphic pumpkin carving tutorial for a Halloween for another work project. I wanted to graphicly carve our faces into pumpkins and place them in a cemetery scene. I got most of the faces done but had a hard time with the people of color and people with beards and facial hair. The tutorial seemed easy enough so I’m not sure why it was harder with the other people. Even though it is after Halloween I am not going to give up and I’ll be ready for next year. I’ll keep the ones that worked out perfect and keep working on the ones that were difficult. I’ll also keep checking to see if there are different tutorials that would be easier for the ones that were difficult. I think the shadowing and shading is what caused the people of color and facial hair be more difficult than the others. Not giving up!

Photoshop vs Illustrator
I am working on a project for work cartooning everyone I work with and making us elves. I have used a Photoshop tutorial before, this time I am trying an Illustrator tutorial. With the Photoshop tutorial, everything was very easy. I did have to change a few of my settings, it was a good guide in showing any amateur how to cartoon themselves. I would use this again if I needed to cartoon again. For this project I decided to try Illustrator first to see if it was even easier than Photoshop. This tutorial required a touch screen device and a stylus, but I chose to use the pen tool instead. I am almost done with the first person I’m cartooning, and it is coming out great. I actually love both tutorials they were both easy to follow step by step. I recommend both tutorials for beginners. The Photoshop tutorial has a different cartoon effect than the Illustrator tutorial does, so depending on what kind of cartooning you are going for choose one or the other.

This was a gift I did for one of Colin’s teachers a while ago. I used image trace in Adobe Illustrator. The actual photo was taken on a field trip that I chaperoned for her. Part 4 https://www.instagram.com/p/B4bSTSRJsSI/?igshid=1dltnk84mlfs2

There is nothing like looking at an old picture and reminiscing about the good old days or hearing about how they used to be from your parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles. I was lucky enough to hear the stories of the past from my elders and looking at the pictures made me almost feel like I was there. In a box that my aunt gave me I found a picture of my grandma and grandpa I saw many years ago of them at about 17 or 18 years old when they were dating, back then they called it courting. Looking at this picture, I can imagine Virgir Brown (my grandpa) walking up to Nora Sonier’s (my grandma) house knocking on the door and asking Junius and Alice (my great-grandparents) to see Nora with her seven sisters in the background being nosey and snickering. This is the only picture I have of them together and wish I had more. I have decided to restore the pictures and this one will be the first of them that I will work on. I hope to have it done by Christmas and give it to my mom along with another picture of her older brother when he was a young kid. I don’t think she has a picture of them together and I am sure she will love to have it. Call me cheap, but with the time I will put into restoring the photo and the smile and happy tears I’m sure to put on her face this should be a priceless gift.

Nostalgic
There is always something about looking at an old picture. On Halloween night I went to my aunt’s house, one of my grandma’s younger sisters and she gave me 2 boxes of old pictures. This brought back some feelings of being in my great-grandma’s house and looking at all of the same old pictures that were in this box and her telling about every one of them. Her memory was leaving her, but you put a picture in front of her and she could explain the picture who was in it and what was happening at that time. With me being a graphic artist, this gave me an idea to restore a lot of the picture. Most of them was faded, ripped, scratched, and spots on them and it was 2 medium sized moving boxes full of pictures, this will be an ongoing project that I will be working on for years to come. I have already started working on a family tree, so having these pictures and restoring them is an added bonus to the project.

Where I Want to Be
I am a graphics designer just starting out. I have my Associates Degree and now in school for my Bachelor’s Degree. My goal is to eventually own a Graphics Design/Print Production Company. It is a tough battle going to school full time, working full time and taking care of a family always, but I refuse to give up. I started college late in life after my mom made a point that if I could be up until 2:00am on Facebook and Pinterest I could go to school online. My excuse was that I needed to be in a classroom setting with a teacher to help me one on one. We both started school together and were in the same classes most of the time, but even though she was good at it she eventually switched to a business degree and is now going for her Master’s Degree. Our plan is to have a business together. I will do the graphic designing, printing and finishing and she will take care of the business part along with printing and finishing. We have been in the printing industry since I graduated high school. We started out doing blueline and blueprints, which eventually switched over to AutoCad, then everything went to digital. Along with that of course we printed other large and small format printing as well. My mom is currently in Denver, Colorado and I am in Houston, Texas, but we will get our business up and rolling as soon as we get the chance and we are ready for it. Owning my own company is where I want to be.

Starting Out
I am finding that it is hard to find a Graphics Design job without any experience. I have a portfolio and I’m working on it to improve it. I have a little freelance experience, but not enough to show for. I am limited to what I can do right now because of the job I have. I work in a reprographics/print room of an oil and gas company that has a graphics department and I am not allowed to reach out to the other employees for freelance work. I was going to interview with the graphics department and show the manager my portfolio when the company got bought by someone else that is getting rid of the graphics department altogether. A few of the employees that know what I was going to school for and has left the company has asked me to do a few things here and there, but again nothing to show for.
I have joined some of the freelance sites like Fiverr, Freelancer, Moonlighting, Upwork and 99Designs. I also have an Etsy, WIX and Zazzle page, but nothing is working. The difference between the Etsy, WIX and Zazzle pages verses the freelance pages is that you don’t have to bid on a job. With the freelance sites you have to bid on the job trying to underbid the others to get the job while trying to calculate the work and your time to charge for and hope the person or company picks you to do the job. All in all, I will continue to work towards what I want and eventually get to where I want to be.
