But the stories remained.

The town had been silent for over a century.

From his seat atop Forest Mountain, John Avery Whittaker looked down at what remained of Odyssey. Buildings stood like empty shells. Streets faded into wild grass. Trees had long since reclaimed sidewalks and fences. There were no voices. No bells. No bikes screeching around corners. Just the breath of wind winding its way through a forgotten world.

Whit sat, motionless, on the same bench he had built with Jason long ago.

The wood was cracked and weathered but hadn't collapsed. Like him, it had endured.

He didn’t know when he had stopped aging. Sometime after the last funeral. Maybe even before that. The gray in his beard had stayed frozen in place. His joints no longer ached. The pasage of years felt more like watching pages turn in a book you’ve read a hundred times. Distant. Inevitable. But never affecting you directly.

At first, he assumed it was a gift. A chance to keep shepherding the town. To guide generation after generation.

But then the generations stopped coming.

First Tom, then Bernard. Jack. June. Edwin. Wooton, who had grown old still laughing. Connie… his heart clenched at the memory. She had aged slower than most, and she had stayed the longest. Refused to leave until there was no one left to serve coffee to. He had held her hand as she passed, whispering one last “I’m proud of you,” while her smile flickered like the last candle in a church.

Eventually, Odyssey emptied out. Young people moved to cities. The school closed.The churches folded one by one. Even Whit’s End, once the heart of the town, shut its doors for good.But Whit stayed.

Because he couldn’t die.

Because he didn’t age.

He didn’t understand it. Not fully. Perhaps something had happened, like some unseen miracle or divine burden. Or maybe it was simply the consequence of having given everything to others for so long, he no longer belonged to the world that changed.

He came to the mountain daily now, just watching the empty streets, waiting for a sound that would never come. Sometimes he spoke aloud, as if the trees might answer.

He pulled a notebook from his coat, its leather was worn soft with time. Inside were pages and pages of stories. Handwritten, careful, precise. He was still adding to them. Becausethe stories had to be remembered. Even if no one was left to hear them.

“I remember when Dylan Maxwell accidentally launched a potato through the church window,” Whit murmured, smiling faintly. “He blamed the laws of physics. I told him God probably invented those too.”

The wind replied with a hollow whoosh.

Sometimes he wondered if he was a ghost. Not dead, no… but out of place. Out of time.

Other times, he imagined that he was being kept alive for a purpose.

But what purpose endures when the world has forgotten you?

Been thinking about Novacom part 2 and Connie.

She's got a lot of connections to that too. Her first roommate was connected to a world terrorist organization (however vaguely) then her next roommate was sent to protect the main with the launch codes the bad guys wanted. Wasn't Connie the last person to see Jason before he was kidnapped? Also I don't remember Good Job quite enough to remember but did Connie try to discourage Jillian from working at triple J's?

Connie’s involvement in the Novacom storyline is undeniably significant. She was connected to key figures in the conspiracy, and while she was emotionally drawn into the situation, there are subtle clues that she might have been manipulating events.

While Penny isn’t directly involved in espionage or national security, she’s been placed in key events where she interacts with larger players or advances certain agendas. Penny’s innocent conversations and her habit of speaking freely around others could easily make her an informant in the eyes of the Chairman (Connie). Connie could be using Penny’s unassuming nature to her advantage. However, this doesn't mean Connie doesn't care about Penny. Connie has had small rivalry with Penny due to her romantic relationship with Wooton. It’s played for laughs, but emotions run high. Connie’s reactions are unusually intense, showing a more jealous, possessive side. This is a glimpse behind the mask or a crack in her perfect image. The tightly controlled Connie slips for a moment, revealing the ambitious, controlling person underneath. The Chairman needs to control every variable. Including relationships.

While Penny’s emotional vulnerability and relationships could be a tool for manipulation, Jillian’s role might be much more strategic and calculated, making her an even more important part of Connie's larger plan. In some ways, Jillian could have been used as a red herring to distract others from Connie’s role as the Chairman. Jillian’s mystery and secrets surrounding her background could have made people focus on her as a potential villain, agent, or covert operative, leaving Connie’s true role as the mastermind hidden. As a complex and mysterious figure, Jillian might have drawn attention away from Connie by being the one people suspected of operating behind the scenes.

The friendship between Connie and Jillian is important to understand in this theory. On the surface, they seem like good friends, but as the theory goes, this relationship may be more about control and influence. Connie’s role as the Chairman might not be as overt as it seems. However this back fired in Album "28 Hours".

She is under intense stress throughout the situation and when faced with the overwhelming crisis, she makes choices that could seem impulsive and driven by her personal relationship with Jason. This is contrary to Connie’s plan of having Jillian be a steady force in the crisis. Jillian’s actions, though unintentional, end up diverting attention or delaying progress in ways that Connie had not anticipated. This could be seen as a failure on Connie’s part to anticipate Jillian’s reaction under pressure.

About Jason... You're correct that Connie was the last person to hear from him. Connie is visibly upset, but also surprisingly composed for someone who just found out her best friend was abducted. (Maybe because she arranged it). However I don't recall Connie discouraging Jillian to work at Triple J's. Instead she pleaded with Jason to give Jillian a chance. And he did... Eventually... 😂 Which may not seem convenient for Connie but this way she knows where both the agents are at all times. Jillian's proximity to Jason creates leverage. Jillian ends up working closely with Jason who’s digging into the exact kind of secrets the Chairman would want to hide or twist. If Jillian is unknowingly feeding information back to Connie (even through casual conversations), then Connie always knows what Jason’s thinking. This would explain how Jason’s actions were preemptively countered, leading to his kidnapping.

This how most people will see it:

Mitch tells Connie he's falling in love with her. Big moment. Emotional. Vulnerable.

Boom! Mitch "dies" in a bombing. The emotional rug gets ripped out from under her and the audience.

But plot twist... He’s not dead... He faked his death as part of an FBI op.

So Let’s Reframe That With Chairman Theory Glasses On:

Mitch confesses love = emotional leverage for Connie.

Then? Conveniently dies = removes himself from her sphere of influence.

But was he protecting her… or escaping her?

What if Mitch discovered something about Connie? And realized she wasn’t just a sweet girl from Whit’s End, but had ties to the Chairman network? What if faking his death wasn’t for the FBI’s benefit... but it was self-preservation?

The Prank Kidnapping:

Happens right before Connie’s wedding.

FBI agents fake kidnap her to “test” if she can handle the danger of marrying Mitch.

The stunt completely traumatizes her and convinces her she’s not cut out for that life.

Result: She calls off the wedding.

Now ask yourself..

Who authorized this prank? Who stood to gain from Connie not marrying Mitch? The FBI? Sure, maybe. But what if the FBI was manipulated into it?

Chairman Theory Interpretation:

The kidnapping wasn't a prank. It was a move.

Someone orchestrated it knowing it would shake Connie to the core.

Someone who needed Mitch out of her life.

Someone who knew that marrying Mitch could lead to her getting out of Odyssey… and out from under their shadow.

So who pulled those strings?

The Chairman. And if that someone was Connie herself… That kidnapping becomes not a warning, but a self-sabotage move to maintain her cover. She “chose” to stay behind. She “chose” not to marry. She “chose” to stay right where the Chairman needs to be... At the heart of Odyssey.

Why Connie Kendall is The Chairman (A serious breakdown)

1) She has deep ties to Whit's End and its secrets: Connie has had access to Whit’s End for years. She knows the ins and outs of the Imagination Station, Room of Consequence, and every hidden element inside. With that knowledge, she could easily manipulate or exploit the technology if she ever turned.

2) Her relationship with Whit provides cover: Whit trusts Connie deeply, almost like a daughter. That bond means she’s above suspicion, which would make her the perfect candidate to operate in the shadows. No one would ever guess she could be The Chairman.

3) She’s emotionally complex and has faced deep internal struggles: Connie has gone through identity crises, questions of faith, loss, and intense emotional experiences. A darker turn (driven by disillusionment or a personal tragedy) could’ve pushed her toward a secret double life.

4) She often ends up at the center of major storylines: In many pivotal episodes, Connie is conveniently in the middle of the action. What if she's not just there by accident… but ensuring things go according to her plans?

5) Her influence in Odyssey is huge: As one of the most beloved and trusted figures in town, she has the ability to sway people, plant ideas, and steer events. Exactly the kind of subtle manipulation The Chairman is known for.

6) She's underestimated. Always: Connie’s often treated like the impulsive, emotional one compared to Eugene’s intellect or Whit’s wisdom. What better mask than being underestimated by everyone?

7) She's survived everything unscathed: While others have suffered serious consequences in the fight against organizations like Novacom, Connie always comes out untouched. Maybe… because she’s been orchestrating it from the inside.

8) The original Chairman’s identity was never fully fleshed out: The mysterious figure behind Novacom, simply referred to as “The Chairman”, is deliberately vague. What if that was by design? What if the truth was hidden in plain sight all along?
