I keep seeing this "Bucchigiri has an awful mc" discourse popping up whenever the anime is mentioned, and there's something that bothers about the way a lot of people are framing these discussions. People always point out the fact that Arajin is a dirtbag who ghosts his only friend to simp for a girl who is actively disinterested in him under the pretense that this is behavior the anime expects us to agree with and think is good, and will thus endear him to us as audience, but like... that's obviously not what Bucchigiri is trying to do??
like- this is a show where the protagonists main love interest is a girl that is so revolted by him that she has zero qualms manipulating him into joining an actual gang, a show where the main character almost shits his own pants before every single action scene, and lets not forget, a show where he neglects and mistreats his only friend so badly that said friend loses it and systematically beats the piss out of every other character on the show to work out his frustrations.
Does that sound like a show that "failed at making a likable protagonist", or does that sound like a show that is purposefully centered around a selfish and awful character?
One of the shows main narrative hooks is watching this terrible man stumble his way through what is an otherwise fairly serious shounen anime world. I think that's a pretty funny subversion of typical anime tropes, but even if you don't agree, to deny that it's what the show is going for is to just refuse to engage with it on any level, and that's the main issue with this type of critique.
You can dislike the show for not having a likable protagonist, but the show is not trying to have a likable protagonist. At that point you're not hating a show because it executes what it's trying to do poorly, you're hating a show because it's not something it never wanted to be in the first place.

Mahoro, Matakara, Aladdin and the Princess
I think Episode 8 finally confirmed to me that the role of the Princess in the Aladdin allusion was actually split between Mahoro and Matakara, rather than it being one or the other. There's a reason why they're both represented by Jasmine-chan during the Nyan Nyaight Love cutaways!
Preface; imo Bucchigiri's narrative takes inspiration from both Disney's Aladdin and the original Aladdin story, so I'm going to switch the Princess's name depending on which version of her I'm referring to. So Jasmine -> Disney's Aladdin, and Badroulbadour -> 1001 Nights Aladdin.
From what I saw in the 1001 Nights Aladdin, Badroulbadour didn't have much of a personality, so it makes sense that a lot of Mahoro and Matakara's personalities were taken from Jasmine, while their roles in the story were slightly more influenced by Badroulbadour.
Mahoro: The feistier side of Jasmine. She has a sharp tongue and always speaks her mind, regardless of potential danger. Eg. Mahoro stands up to Akutaro after he gains the upper hand on both gangs, similarly to how Jasmine refuses to bow to Jafar when he becomes Sultan.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She's also regarded as pretty desirable, and has charmed several men to get them to do what she wants (something that both Jasmine and Badroulbadour do at some point to trick Jafar/the sorcerer). Arajin falls for Mahoro at first sight, similarly to how both versions of Aladdin fell for both versions of the Princess, and like Aladdin his crush on her becomes his driving motivation throughout the series. Akutaro also talks about turning her into a NG Girl and…abusing her, a la Jafar. Ik it's just to trigger Arajin but yk what I mean!
Matakara: The gentler, more naive side of Jasmine, in that he trusts/believes in Arajin...a lot more than he should, really. The main 'lying' plot point between Disney's Aladdin and Jasmine is directly implemented into Matakara and Arajin's relationship. On a surface level there's also their blue colour schemes and phonetically similar names (Asamine -> Jasmine). Near the climax of the 1001 Nights version, the sorcerer tricks Badroulbadour into giving him the lamp with the genie in it, similarly to how Akutaro manipulates Matakara into shooting himself with Ichiya. Both actions trigger a Very Bad Turn of Events that Aladdin stops/will have to stop with the help of his own genie.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also very interesting how Ichiya has a moon motif, and Badroulbadour's name is a metaphor for female beauty meaning 'full moon of full moons'. Totally not losing my fucking mind over that no sir
Though they both fit the Princess allusion, the entire show is screaming that Matakara is Arajin's true Jasmine, and Arajin is going to realise he was what he needed all along. Honestly, it doesn't get more obvious than Episode 9.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
That's not to mention how Mahoro and Matakara also have many, many parallels to each other via their relationships with Arajin. (Both visit him one-on-one at his mom's restaurant to convince him to do something and order the exact same dish, Arajin thinks of child Matakara after seeing both current Matakara and Mahoro get hurt, his meetings with both of them are juxtaposed with one another and described as a 'fated meeting' in this trailer, etc.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Aside from that, there's also a lot of little stuff that the two have in common! (Both suck at cooking, both deeply care about their older siblings, both are cute as hell etc etc.)
(it's also pretty neat how they're technically both the respective 'princesses' of Minato Kai and Siguma, being the younger siblings of the leader/former leader of each gang!)

Return to Nyan Nyaight Love-A Happy Ending in Sight?
Before I begin my analysis for Episode 9's NNL segment, I would like to thank everyone who reblogged my previous post and left kind and wholesome compliments about my analysis. It really warms my heart that so many of you guys enjoyed my thoughts on these segments. Especially if they helped provide a clearer understanding of what thematic purpose they serve in the Bucchigiri series. I'm more than happy to help and I appreciate the compliments.
Secondly, I'd like to thank @saph-yells-into-the-void for providing a majority of screenshots for me to use. Even though you didn't mind not being credited, you still deserve it for these great screenshots!
So just as a quick recap, the NNL segments serve as a Greek Chorus as they parallel the main story of Bucchigiri by using the customer's relationship with Jasmine to symbolize various relations and plot events. This time, their relationship parallels the main relationship of the series: Arajin and Matakara.
Episode 9: A Heartfelt Reunion
The segment starts with the customer being nervous as usual about whether he should go in, only to hurry inside as to avoid being spotted by Arajin who's on his way to the bathhouse. The customer is greeted by the receptionist who is still uneasy with him avoiding Jasmine. And even the customer himself looks less indecisive and more somber when he's asking for Pu'er instead of Jasmine.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As I mentioned in the Episode 1 segment, the customer is meant to symbolize Arajin while the catboy receptionist represents the colorful delinquents that Arajin encounters. And even though the first episode had Jasmine stand in for Mahoro, this time she stands in for Matakara.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The receptionist describes Jasmine as being strong-willed, clingy, and too much at times. Many of which are traits that are associated with Matakara.
-While Episode 9 shows him slowly succumbing to Ichiya's twisted therapy sessions, it's worth noting that it's been several days since when he first merged with the Blue Genie til then. So it's worth noting that Matakara lasted a good while before succumbing to Ichiya's will. And even before that, it was his strong will that helped him become stronger and find a place among Minato Kai while also evading the shadows that constantly haunted him. His determination in becoming stronger helped him to evade those shadows; maybe not vanquish them but not to succumb to them either.
-The clingy and too much at times qualities seem to go hand in hand as most of Matakara's screentime has been spent trying to reconnect with Arajin while holding him on a pedestal. Even as Arajin kept pushing him away, Matakara still clinged on to his idealized version of his best friend. One who constantly inspired him to be a Honki person and do the impossible. The too much at times part also works since Mataraka just wouldn't stop gushing over Arajin to his other friends or tries to force Mahoro to talk with him about Arajin and his involvement in Siguma Squad. While is very much a sunshine puppy boy, he can be quite overbearing when it comes to his old friend.
As of the last episode, Arajin made his true feelings for Matakara painfully clear and how he wants to avoid him at all costs. Only now the rest of the cast have taken notice and how much it's effecting Matakara given his refusal to talk to his other friends Zabu and Sakigake mixed with him running away from home. It's become a serious problem and they're all worried about him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Something peculiar about the receptionist's behavior, and the whole scene overall, is how it's played for dramedy.
The receptionist treats the customer abandoning Jasmine as something tragic and how badly it's effecting her. There's soft music at play as the receptionist speaks his heart out about the cat's distress and how only the customer can help her.
But at the same time, it's just so ridiculous. Utterly ridiculous! There's no reason that the receptionist should need to be so invested in the customer's preferences in cats. They haven't actually bonded with each other apart from letting the customer in so he can spend time with the cats and spend Lord knows how much money. This is his job so it shouldn't matter which cat some random, pathetic everyman chooses to play with since he's still getting paid rather handsomely at the end of the day.
But it does matter to him.
Maybe (as far as we know) the receptionist doesn't know the customer very well but he (supposedly) knows that Jasmine truly misses him and is miserable without him. The receptionist could try to make Jasmine feel better herself given that he sees her more often and knows more about her. But he knows that she holds the customer in his heart and implores him to go back to her.
And while the Minato Kai boys don't care much for Arajin or flat out tell Arajin to patch things up with Matakara, they do make it clear that their friend isn't doing so well after their falling out. He's in need of help and they unfortunately can't do anything about it given how they were brushed aside. And even Mahoro, who also happens to be a colorful character that Arajin met when he entered the Ichizu gang life, has also picked up on Mataraka's despair and wants him to feel better. She clearly doesn't care for Arajin but she knows how much he means to Matakara, someone who understands her when it comes to valuing an older brother figure. She even flat out orders Arajin to go see how he's doing.
Something to consider is that while the Minato Kai boys and Mahoro have their respective but serious scenes with Arajin, they still have their quirky (questionable in Mahoro's case) personalities at play. Such as Sakigake singing his heart out in the bathhouse with Arajin while in his birthday suit to Mahoro having a tea party with a blow up doll of her big brother before learning about Matakara's brother. They're still weird and silly but they show how much heart they have and how they can empathize with someone who's at their lowest. And while they might not be the best person to help out, they know that Arajin is the best person to help them out.
Just like how the customer is the best person to help out the upset cat. And what does he choose when he's asked a second time?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
He loses his mopiness for just a moment, becomes slightly more confident and chooses his precious Jasmine. Much to the receptionist's jubilation.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm gonna be leaning on the optimistic side and say that this will foreshadow Arajin reconciling with Matakara.
As much as I find Arajin to be a detestable and disappointing human being, I will admit that he is capable of growth. Particularly with bonding with his old childhood friend.
Right after defeating Akutaro, we see Arajin help out a grievously wounded Matakara while mildly complaining about it. We see them being on speaking terms during the Pro Wrestling Episode and Arajin even took the time to teach him how to make gyoza. Not to mention that Arajin was also willing to stick around for Mitsukuni's Welcome Party. The guy is not a good person (ESPECIALLY towards women) but he is capable of becoming better. Maybe at a snail's pace, but it's possible.
And we see those glimpses of growth in Episode 9 with him secretly admitting that there was one person (Matakara) who actually would like his rock for a gift.
So I want to be an optimist and say that Arajin will be able to save Matakara from his despair and they'll reconcile. Maybe accepting that he took Matakra's feelings for granted and how he should have treated his former friend better. How he was acting like a dunderhead and how he doesn't expect to be forgiven after treating him like yesterday's trash. I don't know if the puppy boy will forgive and accept Arajin again so quickly after everything that's happened (it actually would make for an impressive writing choice if Matakara chose not to accept him right away but with their being hope that they'll be friends in the future) but their relationship status will be a hopeful one.
Random Thoughts
When the receptionist brought up how the customer has seen other cats, I had two thoughts in mind. The first is from the Group Date til now, the customer has seen other cats at NNL apart from Pu'er.
The second is that this could be an implied parallel to Ichiya. I don't have enough information since we don't know much about Honki People and the Pasts of the Two Genies, but it's possible that Ichiya has encountered other masters in the thousands of years from when he was human to the present. The other cats could have been masters that Ichiya encountered and tried to possess to take revenge against Senya. But as the receptionist claims, Jasmine kept waiting for the customer. In this case, Jasmine was Senya. Ichiya's oldest friend who still longs to see and reunite with him after so many years of separation and regret.
Another thing I want to bring up is how conclusive this segment feels. It feels like it was wrapping up the plotline between the customer and Jasmine. I find this odd since this happened in Episode 9 and we supposedly have three more episodes before Bucchigiri is officially over. Does that mean we won't get more NNL segments in the final 3? Or will we still get them but in different formats? Like an epilogue of the customer bonding with Jasmine (along with getting an official reveal of who she is) or maybe we get a new customer who's set up to meet another cat potentially foreshadowing a final plot point in the series.
And those would be my thoughts on this segment. No lie, I did not expect this to be this long. But given how conclusive this NNL segment was, I felt there was alot to say about this. And what did you guys think of this segment? As before, feel free to reblog this if you agree with what I wrote, disagree or have another interpretation for this scene. So if you think of something, please say that you know.
"Do you know? Do you know? Do you know what this means?"

DAY 29: A SONG OF WHICH YOU KNOW ALL THE LYRICS BY HEART
🎤 BATTLE BATTLE BATTLE
Tumblr media
The very first song Anna @fullmetalgirl98 and I learned!
I still remember when we finally managed to do it without looking at the lyrics - I was playing Matenro and started Doppo's verse and it flowed so well and I was FLABBERGASTED - and then it just became a thing. Both upright (me Matenro and Anna Fling Posse) and upside down (me Fling Posse and Anna Matenro).
At this point - it's been two years... - we've sang this song a ridiculous amount of times. She's the queen the og the goat we love her.

🎤 REASON TO FIGHT

Oh boi.
This is, plot wise, one of the best battles ever, but damn if we didn't sing this one sooo much with Anna @fullmetalgirl98 that I ended up just not being able to listen to it anymore.
I don't think I've listened to this song in the past year. I needed one hell of a damn break from it.

DAY 29: a song of which you know all the lyrics by heart
🎤 「Nausa de Zuiqu」
Tumblr media
(link)
Never in my life, once I met HypMic, did I think that one day I would know the lyrics of this song by heart. Yet it did happen. All because this was the song through which I got @justanotherniky into this project and into the Samaichi, consequently I had no escape. It all started with me playing Ichiro and Niky Samatoki. Until this got slightly out of hand…and we started rapping it in the kitchen…then on the street…then in the supermarket while we were shopping. Well, this little shenanigans cost us at least a good month of freaking out because of 問題!and まだまだまだ! and ロウリュ! Not to mention that I also infected my two little cousins….and by extension my poor aunt as well. In short, I was almost literally forced by circumstances to memorize this nonsense. And this is the story of why every now and then Anna comes up with "Ichiro to Samatoki, nausa de zuiqu…"

🎤 JACKPOT!
Tumblr media
Hear me out you can't tell me this shit don't slap.
It's got a pretty distinctive sound compared to the usual HypMic, there's something to it that could easily appeal to outsiders (*AKYR starts playing*).
Thing is, HypMic songs are so deeply connected to their characters it's sometimes hard to appreciate some of them without knowing them. But something like Jackpot or even TDD Legend? BANGERS. GET THEM OUT. STOP GATEKEEPING.
(Actually no gatekeep a little bit but not too much because we want the cult to expand!)

mulled it over for a while and ultimately decided i'm really digging this arajin-matakara fight, because like
the whole series has set up arajin as a piece of shit fuckhead (and i LOVE that for him) but this whole lying to matakara about wanting to be a honki people thing... is like the one thing he did not actually do
i get real rambly under the cut but tl;dr the way matakara treats arajin is the way arajin treats mahoro and that is suuuch a juicy parallel to me
throughout the whole series arajin has been not at all subtly trying to get away from these fights
could he have been more direct about that with matakara? sure maybe! but matakara was really ignoring all the signs that arajin is not who he thinks he is
which is such a delicious parallel to how arajin willfully ignores all the signs that mahoro is not into him
like. matakara built this version of arajin up in his head, with all these unreasonable, unrealistic, and honestly unfair? expectations based off some past foolishness from when they were very small children. he's clinging to this version of arajin that only exists in his head and has basically shown zero evidence of existing in real life
(yes arajin shows crumbs of courage but i think the scales are tipped pretty heavily towards his I DO NOT WANT ANY PART OF THIS moments)
this fight between them was like if arajin were to blow up at mahoro like "you've been leading me on this whole time!" when obviously. lol. no she has not
she did initially! just like tiny arajin as a child had those honki people ambitions! his ambitions may have been genuine, while mahoro feigned interest in him with malicious intent, but they're same in the sense that after that initial story beat, they have consistently demonstrated that actually no what happened back then no longer applies (whether because they grew out of it, in arajin's case, or they were faking interest in the first place, in mahoro's case)
but arajin is blinded by what he wants (mahoro) and ignores the reality of mahoro snubbing him at every turn, and matakara does the same, ignoring the reality of arajin really just... being extremely reluctant to have anything at all to do with him
anyway that's the main thing i'm chewing on and loving here, but ALSO i think the story paints this parallel in such an interesting way because like
matakara is just a big sweet ouppy dog of a boy! it's so so so easy to feel sorry for him, to root for him, to think the best of him. which i still do btw, in fact this episode made me like him more than i already did
because matakara is so uwu angelboy perfect, and arajin is such a dickhead, it's easy to instinctively think oh matakara must be completely right to be hurt and arajin must have hurt him. even if that isn't the case! this doesn't make arajin any less of a dickhead, but he's a dickhead mainly for other reasons
the fact that they've been set up as the perfect epitome of the Pure Boy and the Pervy Boy tropes is just such clever framing for this parallel between them, because i imagine a lot of viewers, if told what mataakara is doing to arajin is what arajin is doing to mahoro, would be like omg wtf no my pure angel baby is nothing like that disgusting freak?
except in this case! he literally is!! which is brilliant!!! i think it adds nuance to both matakara's character and arajin's character at the same time, making it so it's not just one of them is Perfect and one of them is Wrong All The Time
what's even better is that this made sense for matakara, like his reaction breaks him out of the Pure Angel mold but doesn't feel out of character. his emotions are already running high with what happened to his brother, plus akutaro is malewife mansplain manipulating him behind the scenes, so of course he feels like he's driven towards this emotional high that leads to this blowup
the groundwork was already laid out, and it wasn't even subtle. it was right on the surface! but this episode really highlighted how matakara's way of treating arajin is so much like arajin's way of treating mahoro and how inevitable it was that things would reach this point
(there are moments, even in this episode, that are in hindsight so clearly setting up this parallel! like arajin trying to talk to mahoro during lunch, mahoro CLEARLY not interested, making viewers think ugh arajin get a clue. then matakara often IMMEDIATELY coming in to try to talk to arajin, when arajin is the one who clearly isn't interested, making viewers think boo arajin be nicer to him! like i think the show deliberately set the audience up to have those emotional reactions, and this is the moment where the rug is pulled out from under us, so to speak, where it becomes even more obvious that... wait... double standard much?)
anyway. personally my only gripe with this episode is i wished they'd done more with aniki than just pseudo-fridge him, and hope they do still do more with him in the coming eps? but kind of understandable if they don't, because it is just a one-cour show after all
the actual blowup between arajin and matakara was just. mawh, chef's kiss. perfect

It was a bit of a toss up between this one which I remember being awed by and the ever iconic Division Battle Anthem +, but the vibes here are IMMACULATE.
Enishi is one of my favourite DotsuHon songs - it's so positive and cute and I remember listening to it before exams because Sasara's part would relax me so much - and when they released the MV??? The vibessss they were out of this world.

🎤 QUEST 2

No listen up. Long haired Ichiro lives in my brain rent free. He is the best Ichiro. That has to be the best Ichiro look ever. I will NOT accept criticism!!!
All of them honestly look so iconic (in Quest 1 as well, but there's no long hair Ichiro there so *shrug*), but Ichiro and Samatoki take the damn cake. The little braid in Samatoki's hair makes me feral. Not as much as Ichiro's look but it's pretty damn close.
Also living for the fairy Ramuda agenda, let the dude create even more chaos than usual by using magic.

DAY 24: A DUET YOU'D LIKE TO SEE
🎤 SAMATOKI & NEMU
Tumblr media
It's obviously gonna happen at some point, and it better be soon!!!
It would at the same time be the most wholesome and the saddest song in the history of,,, the world probably.
There's quite a few options, I think, for what kind of sound it would have? Knowing Samatoki it might be some sort of soft rock vibe but Nemu's music tends to be quite bubbly, so it would be interesting to see how they handle putting those two styles together.
And also it's just,,, siblings feels 🥺

Kind of an unexpected choice, maybe? But genuinely this song struck something in me when I heard it. Somehow it managed to be completely different from what I expected from Samatoki and perfectly fitting.
The lyrics are one sucker punch after the other - the fact that they're clearly directed at both Nemu and Ichiro hnnnng my poor little heart
But it's also just such a beautiful song. AsaShin as always showing off his insane range and skill, honestly give that man a statue, and just,,, everything about this, it gives me so many feels and makes me all stupid when I listen to it. Damn it Samatoki.

DAY 22: CHARACTERS THAT WOULD BE YOUR CREW
🎤 SASARA AND SABURO
Tumblr media
Oh my god we would make such a chaotic group.
I would play Dungeons and Dragons with Saburo and rope Sasara into it and make it the wackiest campaign in history with the both of us playing bards and poor Saburo having to deal with it. We'd kill so many enemies with double bouts of vicious mockery. Saburo is DMing and he is not sure if he's happy about it.
Anna @fullmetalgirl98 said Gentaro would get along with me because we're both writers and honestly??? Yeah but he'd die with me. Death by one (1) sex joke. However I would rope him into DnD too and make him DM this time so he can come up with an even wackier campaign. Oh my god that would be awesome.
We could potentially??? even rope Samatoki into this. Sasara would bring him along and make him meet me and Samatoki would go into cardiac arrest because he'd realise there's suddenly two Sasaras and he can't possibly be drunk already can he??? Samatoki would not play DnD with us because he'd be dying from lung cancer five minutes in because he feels the need to light at least ten cigarettes at the same time to cope.
So apparently I lost the plot and this instead of being characters that would be my crew became characters that would be my DnD group. *shrug* Call Kuko as well, he can be the monk and make it a party.

DAY 21: FAVOURITE DRAMA TRACK
🎤 WHEN SIX COLOURS COMBINE, " " BEGINS (spoilers alert, I guess)
Tumblr media
You people cannot comprehend the absolute idiot this drama track made out of me when I first listened to it and the absolute idiot that I become when I think about it to this day.
Honestly, the entire 2 D.R.B. was crazy, with all the lore drops and shit, but this was the culmination of it, and the culmination of my brain rot.
Every now and then I think of this track and just go batshit crazy over it like I'm experiencing it for the first time all over again, but like, let's break it down for a minute. It's a long ass track.
Ramuda is dying, Samatoki is pissed at him like there's no tomorrow, the younger Buster Bros now know they have a deadbeat father, Sasara is being his amazing self and so is Kuko. Jakurai is being all sentimental but what else is new. Alright. So far so good.
Except! The old MCD all run into each other and Sasara and Kuko go all, man, do you remember shit about why we fought with Ichiro and Samatoki?, no man, brain's empty, why the fuck did we do that? and Samatoki is all like, oh shit man I connected the dots, but Ichiro is very reasonably pissed and ends up running off like an upset girlfriend in an American college movie. And Samatoki FOLLOWS HIM LIKE THE CONCERNED AMERICAN COLLEGE BOYFRIEND. I am a simple guy. I see SamaIchi, I click. This scene sent me flying. I was screaming at my screen *gets dragged off stage again*
The role reversal? The way Samatoki is calm and trying to make Ichiro come to reason when it's usually the other way around? THAT'S SOME DAMN GOOD FOOD.
And I'm not even done. Because Jakurai.
Fucking hell Jakurai. I WILL SAVE YOU, AMEMURA-KUN is a meme at this point. Rent free in my brain. What the fuck. I love these stupid dudes.
And the way it ends? With them all fighting again just for kicks? Jakurai and Ramuda starting to bicker just because everyone else is and the little oomph in synch they all do at the end? I could VISUALISE THAT SHIT. I love them. Why do I love them so much?
Oh, and on top of it all, this is the drama track where we get frog Gentaro. I have nothing more to say. *mic drop*
