Mateo invited Victoria to that lil group outing at the park with everyone because he saw how hard she was trying to make plans to hang out with him (and Cassie) and probably recognized that this cute, awkward girl needed to have friends and socialize and felt bad that Cassie essentially (mistakenly?) ignored that and just referred her to a babysitter when poor girlie was just trying to expand her social circle

So BOOM, another way he was looking out for her and taking care of her.

Mateo curses lowly under his breath. “I panicked! I didn’t want you going on that date. Then… I thought about the list and I didn’t want you doing… that with him.” He pauses before quietly adding. “With anyone. So I told McKay because I was freaking out and… she said we should show up.”

Victoria releases a shaky sigh into her hands, her anger wearing away to sadness. “Do you really think I’m the type of girl who would do that? Who’d sleep with anyone on the first date or gives me attention?” She lets out a quiet sob. “You made me feel so fucking cheap.”

Mateo freezes, his shoulders slump with a sigh as the hand that’s not on his bag clenches. He turns slowly and looks at her in the eyes for the first time in a week. He looks… wrecked. Like he hasn’t been getting enough sleep. “Don’t be sorry, Vic. You didn’t do anything wrong.”
