Inspiration for Final
For the final project I wanted to create a world that seemed ordinary, and familiar, but had eerie unsettling characters. I was inspired by the manga artist Junji Ito, where the fear not only comes from the art itself, but from fact that characters are in such ordinary situations.

I was also inspired by the show Avatar: The Last Airbrnder, in which the “spirit world” resembles a swampy environment host a number of odd entities:

Three images from the midterm assignment:

Honestly my biggest challenge so far is coming up with an end goal for my machine; I know what I want different parts to do and how they interact with each other, but creating an end to the machine has been difficult.
I want the concept of my machine to be soft and cute but deadly.

For that concept I wanted to use objects like hearts, balloons, hair bows, juxtaposed with guns, knife, and other violent objects. My biggest inspiration for that is the “Russian Roulette” music video from Korean girl group Red Velvet, in which they each try to kill each other, with pastel colors in the background :D

“I think, Koreans secretly, they don’t trust people that don’t drink”.
Drinking is a big part of Korean society; the alcohol of choice is soju(소주). When your boss invites you to an after work dinner with drinks, turning down such invitation will leave you with the label of social outcast. Not only is drinking seen as a social gathering with colleagues, it is seen as a way to ease the pressure of societal expectations. On average, Americans drinks 3 shots of hard liquor a week; Koreans, 14 shots. With a bottle of soju costing $1.10, it is easy down numerous bottles in one night.
