I’ve been working on this sporadically since you sent this ask, to be honest, and I’m honored that you trust me to answer this sensitive question for some.I wanted to share screenshots from the game where I remember the members themselves telling MC they dont care what she looks like, but somehow I can’t find them though I remember them!! (So many routes, how would I remember which one it happened in;;)

Huge thanks to @otomesweetheart for commissioning me to do this drama CD translation. I absolutely love the Apple-Polisher series, all of the characters have such depth and are absolutely adorable. Shinobu is my second favorite after Yuki. So it was really nice to be able to listen, translate, and share. I hope you guys enjoy.

Note: This is an epilogue to Shinobu Kurosawa's route in the game, each track is a different episode in Shinobu and MC's relationship. You can purchase the CD on Amazon JP or CDJapan. Please do not repost my translations.

Track 1 - それでも好きでしょう？

0:18 - So you're awake? Yeah, this is my house. You're making a face like you don't know why you're here. As I thought, you don't remember, do you? You're the one who called me and told me to come get you.

0:43 - You remember that your agency had a music festival today, right? You got drunk at the after party, and just like you did before, you called me to complain. Looks like you remember now.

1:05 - I'm... a little angry about it. Enough that although I haven't in a while, I'm smoking again. It's not that I'm upset about you complaining to me. It's just... You said all those complaints and demanded I come pick you up, but when you're drunk, you won't even tell me where you're at.

1:29 - That's why I had to contact Tasuku and the guys. *footsteps* It's better if you don't come over here. Even though the window is open, some of the smoke is going in your direction.

1:49 - Don't make that face. I'm the one that wants to pout about it. When I went to get you, you were clinging onto Tasuku. I'm not lying, ask Tasuku. I knew since it was an after party by your agency that Kippei and the others would be there. Those guys are like brothers to you. I'm sure they were watching out for you while you were drunk. Still... it left a bad taste in my mouth.

2:42 - I'm sorry. Even though I said not to get close to me, I couldn't hold back. When I thought about it, it annoyed me. As adults, they may have felt like they needed to look after you. But for me... In front of you I act like an adult, but inside I'm just a child.

3:15 - Why are you laughing? C-cute? Me? Hey. Were you listening to me? I'm angry about this. That's right, you should reflect over your actions. I trust Tasuku and the others, and I'm grateful that they were watching out for you. But they're men too. Please keep that in mind.

3:51 - Ah, I sounded like I was lecturing again... I'm going to go cool my head. Hm? Why are you grabbing at my shirt? You want me to stay here?

4:16 - *sigh* It doesn't seem like you understood what I just said. I'm also a man. I just told you to keep that in mind. Even if you apologize now, it's too late. Come here.

4:52 - It tastes bitter? I don't have the luxury of being gentle with you. You may have forgotten. But when we met outside before, I told you. If you got drunk like that again, I wouldn't let you get away with a simple lecture.

5:20 - Although it's true that you didn't go out to drink by yourself this time... But it doesn't change the fact that you worried me. What should you do? How about you go along with what I want until I'm satisfied.

5:44 - With just my shoulder I can make it so you can't move. You need to realize that. It seems like your body's gotten warm... You're making a face like you want me to make it warmer for you.

6:06 - I have no intention of granting that wish easily. *kiss* Your throat is trembling. *kiss* Where do you want me to kiss next? Go ahead and tell me.

6:31 - Are you not going to say? That's unfortunate. If you're not going to tell me, then I'll do what I want. *kiss* Are you going to keep my warning in mind now? Alright. Sorry for being forceful. As long as you get it now.

7:03 - Then the next... *kiss from MC* Really... you always do things I don't expect. *chuckle* That's right. I like that about you. I don't think I can be at peace with this though, being continuously messed with by you.  You're... really a bad girl. *kiss*

Track 2 - Your My Sugar

0:08 - Yeah, that should be ready. You've gotten pretty skilled at this. Compared to when you first came to me and asked me to teach you how to bake, you improved a lot. It's not like you're bad at cooking in the first place, and you pick things up quickly. It makes teaching you worthwhile.

0:37 - Nn? Oh, how I got started not just with cooking but baking sweets? I made cookies and cakes just like this a long time ago. When I was practicing cooking in the kitchen, my little sister would come and pester me. Kids are honest. If it tastes good, they’ll happily tell you. If it’s bad, they’ll say they don’t want it.

1:14 – The only time I failed at it was when I first started. But after that I caught on and completed something my sister really liked. I realize that I hate losing, but thanks to that, I’m able to teach you now. So it’s not something I can get rid of.

1:41 – Yeah, next is the cream… Ahaha. Ah, sorry. You didn't realize? You have cream on your nose. I’m not lying, why would I lie about that? Hey, I’ll wipe it off, so turn this way. Hm… *kiss* Hm. The taste isn’t bad. What? Your face is red.

2:22 – It’s embarrassing? It’s just me. What do you have to be embarrassed about? Something only a girl can understand? That means I can’t then. Don’t get grumpy about it. My bad, my bad.

2:45 – Yeah, I do honestly think it’s my fault. What? You doubt me? I’m not trying to gloss it over.  Mm… You really won’t let it go. Hm, I get it. You want me to fuss over you. As usual, you’re not being honest. That isn’t quite right… Your mouth isn’t honest, but your face and attitude are.

3:25 – What? Of course I know what you’re thinking. *chuckle* You should have been honest from the beginning. Put that cream in the refrigerator for now so it can chill.  Yeah, we just have to wait for the dough to finish baking.

3:56 – In the meantime, do you want to drink some coffee? Go ahead and wait in the living room, I’ll make it and bring it to you. And I’ll shower you with affection just like you want. *pouring* *chuckle* You really are easy to read. It’s written on your face. Are you really that happy to have me fuss over you? Here, this is your coffee.

4:51 – Hm? Oh, you noticed? I tried using beans this time. Too much caffeine isn’t good for your skin, so I tried using decaffeinated… How was it? I see, so it tastes good. Huh? Not for me, I’m talking about your skin.

5:21 - All I drink is coffee, and lately you’ve been drinking it too, right? I don’t want your skin to dry out because of that. Not to mention that you were complaining that you have to wear make-up for photo shoots too.

5:46 – Of course I remember. I always remember what you say. Anyways, how long do you intend to sit beside me? I told you I’d shower you with affection. *pats* Come here. Yeah, I’m telling you to come sit on my lap. What? Aren’t you the one who said you wanted it?

6:22 – Come on, sit here. You finally came. Even though you’re assertive, you’re bad at relying on me. It doesn’t bother me. *kiss* I love that part about you too. *sigh* You smell like that cream you made. It’s enticing.

7:08 – Hey, don’t struggle! I’m telling you now, I have no intention of letting you get away. Be good and stay in my arms. Your face is red… let me see. *kiss* You’re making a face like it’s not enough. The place you really want me to kiss… is it here?

7:47 – Do you want me to? …Yeah, that’s right. You’re cute, so I’m teasing you. Until you tell me to, I won’t kiss you here. *chuckle* You look like you’re getting impatient, are you going to resign yourself? But, I won’t be able to hold back anymore anyways.

8:16 – That’s why I’m glad you surrendered first. *kiss* You’re cute. *grunt* What is it all of a sudden, clinging to me like that? Are you embarrassed? Why at this point would you… *grunt* Hey, it hurts. *sigh* I get it, we’ll stay like this for a little while longer. In the meantime, I’ll make your blush go away.

Track 3 – 夏の約束

0:05 – Sorry for inviting you to Kyoto so suddenly. I’ve been busy lately so I haven’t been able to contact my family much. My grandmother often asks me to come and visit, but I didn’t think my older sister would ask me to bring you along too.

0:28 – You had to go out of your way to make time for this, didn’t you? Thank you. It’s already evening but I finally get to spend time with you. Whenever I come to visit, I have to make rounds greeting everyone. It’s such a pain that sometimes I don’t come.

0:53 – While I was tied up, you went out with my sisters, right? They were really happy about that. It seems like they really like you. Ah, you went out to Arashiyama(1)? It wasn’t crowded, was it? That’s right, it’s a little ways off from the regular tourist season, so it might not have been as bad.

1:26 - After you ate udon, you walked through a bamboo thicket and stopped at a Kanmi Dokoro(2) and had green tea amitsu(3)? *chuckle* All you did was eat, but as long as you enjoyed yourself that’s what matters.

1:45 – Summer? Oh, you heard about Tourou Nagashi(4)? I’m sure you already heard from my sisters, but it’s a yearly ceremony for the purpose of sending off the spirits of the deceased. The lit up lanterns floating on the water’s surface are beautiful, but… are you interested in that?

2:13 – I see. There will be a lot of people, but the ceremony doesn’t start until evening. If you wear a hat, they might not recognize you. If our agencies will give us permission, then I’d be happy to take you to see it.

2:35 – That’s right, in the summer there’s more than Tourou Nagashi that we could enjoy. If there’s some other event you want to go to… The festival at the shrine? Are you talking about the one we went to together before? No, we can go. I was also thinking that I’d like to go with you again.

3:07 – Make that a promise for next summer, huh…? That means you plan to be with me next year too. I see. “That’s a given,” huh? Yeah, we’ll be together next year, and even after that. Although there might be times when that’s difficult, but even if you disappeared from my life, I would find you. If I disappeared, would you look for me? It seems like if that happened, you’d find me immediately.

4:03 – Yeah, it’s a promise. *kiss* It’s fine, it’s already evening. There aren’t many people. *kiss* I messed up… We can kiss here, but we can’t do anything more than that. Now I’ll have to wait until we get back to our hotel.

4:39 – It’s your fault for making that face. The temperature is going to drop soon, so it’s perfect timing. Let’s go back to the hotel now.

5:17 – It was good that I turned them down when they told me to stay at the house. I don’t want the time we finally have together to be taken away. Tomorrow, when we return to Tokyo, we’ll be separated again.

5:39 – Until then, I’m going to monopolize you. You’re happy…? I see. I am too. I want all of you. Can you give that to me? You have so many different expressions. If there’s one you haven’t shown me yet, I want to see it. *kiss* Can you show me?

6:23 – That’s right, I’ll take them one by one. *kiss* We have plenty of time. I’m looking forward to how many new expressions of yours I can discover tonight… *kiss*

Cultural Notes:

(1) Arashiyama is a district on the western outskirts of Kyoto and is one of the tourist hotspots in the region. MC had never been to Kyoto before she went and met Shinobu’s family for the first time, and in the game she often spoke about how she wanted to see more places in Kyoto. This is most likely why his sisters took her there.

(2) Kanmi Dokoro is a café that features Japanese-style sweets.

(3) Anmitsu is a popular Japanese desert made with agar jelly.

(4) Tourou Nagashi is a ceremony performed on the evening of the final day of Obon. Obon is a three day long festival that begins the 15th of August in the Kansai region where Kyoto is located.

Track 4 - 手のひらの微熱

0:07 – There we go. You seem to be sleeping well. The water’s gotten lukewarm already, should I go ahead and change it…? Ah, did I wake you up? Your fever still hasn’t gone down. You don’t need to force yourself to sit up.

0:33 – Good girl. I heard you haven’t been feeling well since yesterday. Narumi told me that even during a teacher's lecture you were spacing out. I’m not angry. I was just worried when I heard.

1:01 – You had work that you couldn’t miss, right? You give everything your all to the bitter end. Yeah, my work’s already over for today. When I heard about you being laid up in bed, I had them drop me off with Narumi. I wanted to see your face.

1:31 – I feel better now that I see it wasn’t as bad as I thought. You had a lot of photo shoots and recordings, right? You really did your best the whole way through. If you want to cry, you can. You don’t need to pretend to be strong in front of me.

1:54 – Holding back that much just makes it hard on you. Yeah, you really gave it your all. You made sure not to let it show while you were working, didn’t you? I heard you’re off of work for now. Take that time to rest and get better.

2:23 – Don’t rub your eyes, they’ll get red. I’ll wipe your tears for you, so you can cry as much as you want. Me? I’m fine. I’m not sick, and I won’t catch your cold that easily. So don’t worry about me. I just want to be next to you.

3:05 – It looks like you’ve calmed down a bit. Are you hungry? Alright. I peeled an apple for you, but you can eat it later then. You’re hungry after all? *chuckle* So you change your mind when it’s right in front of you, huh… Can you sit up a little?

3:39 – Here, go ahead and eat. You want me to feed you? You’re sure acting spoiled. Is it because you have a fever? I don’t dislike it. I was thinking it was kind of nice. I’ll feed you, here.

4:11 – It looks like you do have an appetite. After you finish the apple, take your medicine. Of course it’s bitter. That’s why they say “good medicine tastes bitter.” Plus, if you’re sick like this, it’s hard on me. I hope you get better soon.

4:40 – You’re going to take the medicine? Yeah, I have water here for you. Finished? Then you should lie back down. I can’t stay over, but I’ll stay until you fall asleep. Don’t look so sad about it or I won’t want to go home.

5:17 – Give me your hand. If we hold hands it will put your mind at ease, right? Good. Now close your eyes. *kiss*  It’s okay. I told you, right? I won’t get your cold that easily. This is… That’s right, this is a spell to help you get better. *kiss* Good night.

Track 5 –ロマネスクは遠く

0:06 – That was a big yawn. You probably got sleepy from taking a warm bath. Sorry for doing this when you came to stay the night, but I can’t go to sleep yet. You don’t have to force yourself, go ahead and go to sleep. What? You’re glancing over at me.

0:34 – You can’t sleep? Ah, you’re curious about what I’m looking at? I’m doing an acoustic arrangement for our next live show. Next time we’re doing a rehearsal in the studio, so I was checking the score.

0:56 – Your eyes lit up, I guess you’re not tired anymore. Do you want to have a look? It’s not a secret. You’re curious about it, right? It’s difficult to see just looking at it from the side. If we do it like this, with me hugging you from behind, it’s easier for both of us to see it.

1:28 – I had this thought before but you really are at the perfect height. You’re just the right size to hold like this. I don’t mind if you lean back on me. It’s more comfortable that way for you too. Yeah, Yuki’s playing an acoustic guitar for this.

1:55 – Depending on the song, Narumi and Yuusei alternate who plays the piano. Yuusei also plays the cajón. Oh, have you never seen someone perform on one? Where someone sits on what looks like a box and strikes it with their hand? That’s a cajón.

2:13 - The sound of a drum kit overpowers the other instruments in an acoustic performance. So the cajón is often used in place of it. Me? I play the bass like always. I thought about attempting the double bass, or more commonly known as the contrabass. But the style is too different and it would take too much time to learn how to play it.

2:45 – You want to see me try to play it? Yeah, I am interested. Since you don’t need electricity for it, you can play it anywhere. Do you also want to try playing some other instruments besides the guitar? You’re brimming with curiosity.

1:19 – Good morning. It tickles. This is unusual, you rubbing my head. My hair? Ah… I guess it has started to grow down past the nape of my neck. Am I going to grow it out like before? I hadn’t decided. I don’t mind either way. Yuki said when he sees my hair short it reminds him of the past, so occasionally he pulls a face at me.

About the YOI Translation

I wanted to add another thing, the OP of the previous post was incorrect in their assessment that “koto” in the context of “kimi no koto ga suki” is an intensifier.

But very often, it’s something of an intensifier, to indicate the noun it’s attached to and everything associated with it. You can say “kimi ga suki” for ‘I like you’, but if you say ‘kimi no koto ga suki’, you aren’t saying ‘I like your things’ but rather ‘I like you and everything about you, everything that makes up you’. This is also why you’ll often see ‘XYZ no koto ga…’ as a short preface to a love confession, because suki for love comes right after it usually in such situations.

It’s actually the exact opposite, “koto” is a way of making the line sound less direct because Japanese people like to express themselves more indirectly. This is a question that I asked my Japanese teacher who has a Masters in Linguistics years ago, because I also found the usage of “koto” in “kimi no koto ga suki” to be unusual. I wanted to understand what the function of it was - did it contribute on a semantic level (meaning) or on a syntactic (grammatical) level somehow? She’s the one who taught me the “koto” makes it less direct.

Don’t just take my word for it, I looked up several native speakers and their opinions on it.

「君が好き」、「君のことが好き」の違いについて、一生懸命考えたのですが、わかりません。ごめんなさい。どちらも、日本人は、同じように使っていると思います。 

I did my best to think about the difference between “Kimi ga suki” and “Kimi no koto ga suki,” but I don’t know of any. I’m sorry. I think a Japanese person would use either one the same way.”

And

言う人の側に立って考えてみた時、「君が好きだ」の方が気持ちをストレートに伝えている感じはありますね。

If I put myself in the position of the person saying it, it feels like “Kimi ga suki da” more straightforwardly conveys your feelings.

The bottom line is, please be careful what you believe on Tumblr. You don’t have to believe me. I would prefer you fact check everything you read for yourself. If you really want to get the exact meaning of what’s being spoken in anime, I would recommend learning Japanese. Just know that learning Japanese is a very slow process and if you’re in it for the long haul, you will be learning for the REST of your life. Don’t buy into the thought that learning ends with a JLPT N1. It never stops.

Seen a lot of people doing armchair translating from across multiple fandoms, so I appreciate this post. However, I have to step in here to defend Crunchyroll. The translation of “Please be my coach until I retire” is not incorrect. You may disagree with that stylistic choice, but that does not make it incorrect.

Anime fans equate “Please take of me” as referring to the phrase “Yoroshiku Onegaishimasu” and they understand the meaning and that connection. However, general fans not familiar with Japanese or its culture wouldn’t understand this translation. At the very least they would feel like the line was awkward because we simply don’t say that in English.

Crunchyroll translated it the way they did so it would flow better in English. That way anyone, whether they had ever seen an anime or knew any Japanese or not, could watch and understand. It may not be the way you would have translated it, but that doesn’t make it wrong.

“koto” is not “mono”: YOI mistranslations abound

YOI is a great series, and it has a great fandom. But in their enthusiasm, it seems some fans have taken to playing armchair translators, encouraged by posts rightfully pointing out mistranslations in the official subs to try and find errors of their own where there are none.

Two posts have propagated mistranslations in the past 24 hours that I’ve seen, though there are probably more, and I was confused when I got asks about it, wondering if there was a mistranslation, until I saw the offending posts for myself (here and here). To the OPs of these posts: thanks. Thanks for spreading misinformation in a fandom already rife with it. To the people who reblogged those posts: I’m sorry. In the future, be very VERY suspicious of any Japanese translations those posters give.

Let’s discuss what it’s actually supposed to say.

“KOTO” is not “MONO”: Japanese 101

Now, Japanese is a fun language. It’s difficult for some, easy for others. But it has lots of quirks that sometimes don’t make sense to new speakers of the language, and one of them is in the translations of the words koto and mono.

Both of these words mean thing. But they do not mean the same type of ‘thing’.

Mono is a concrete thing. A ‘thing’ you can touch. If you want to say “This is mine”, you can say “Boku no mono da” [I-possessive thing is] (among other variations, but you get the picture).

Koto, though? Koto is a more abstract thing. You can’t touch a ‘koto’. It’s used often in grammatical constructions as part of a larger fragment of a sentence, not as a word in itself. It’s used to form gerunds, for example (aruku–> walk, aruku koto–> walking). And when it’s coupled with a noun, it can mean things like about (boku no koto, dou omoimasu ka?–> about me, how do you think? [What do you think about me/How do you feel about me?]).

But very often, it’s something of an intensifier, to indicate the noun it’s attached to and everything associated with it. You can say “kimi ga suki” for ‘I like you’, but if you say ‘kimi no koto ga suki’, you aren’t saying ‘I like your things’ but rather ‘I like you and everything about you, everything that makes up you’. This is also why you’ll often see ‘XYZ no koto ga…’ as a short preface to a love confession, because suki for love comes right after it usually in such situations.

So what does this have to do with anything?

Well, in the ending scene of episode 9, Yuuri says the following to Victor:

引退まで、僕のことお願いします！

intai made, boku no koto onegaishimasu!

Let’s get one thing straight: Crunchyroll did NOT translate this correctly. Apparently they added coach in there, and as you can see, it’s nowhere in that Japanese :P It’s a VERY liberal translation and one that was uncalled for IMHO.

Yuuri literally says: “Until [my] retirement, please do me-and-all-about-me”

okay STOP SNICKERING it’s not that kind of ‘do me’ XDD

onegaishimasu is a stock phrase in Japanese that literally means ‘please do [it]’ but is more shorthand for ‘please/I’m counting on you/thanks for doing this for me’.

Yuuri is asking Victor to continue to take care of him/look after him–and ‘him’ in the sense of ‘me and all that I am, everything about me’–until he retires.

That’s it.

He’s not asking Victor to ‘be mine’, because koto does not mean thing in that way. It seems that some of these mistranslations mixed up koto and mono or just didn’t realize you can’t use koto to mean a tangible thing.

tl;dr - “Please take care of me/look after me until I retire” is what he said, not “Please be mine until I retire”

Please please don’t try to point out translation errors like this unless you’re a professional (and if either of the people who did this are actually professional translators? Yiiiiiikes). If you’re concerned about a translation, ask someone who does this for a living. I know there are a few of us in fandom–I’m N1, translate scientific content as well as manga for a living, and have been living in Japan for 10 years now.

I’d really appreciate it if people could signal boost this, since the original posts have something like 5000 notes. That’s 5000 people who trust people not to spread misinformation through their faulty understanding of a complex language and have been betrayed _o_
