American Pie Cover
youtube
Along with my two house mates @k00261680 and @k00260998 . We recorded the song American Pie. I was drawn to the song lyric ‘The day the music dies’ as although wrote in 1970 I felt it relates to how covid has distributed our music today. Preforming this song brought back those memories where people can connect and embrace through music, playing and learning this was our way of keeping our own music alive.

Bloopers recording American Pie
youtube
We had many attempts before recording the full song American Pie, I created a video of all the bloopers to capture and document these moments of laughter.

My 6 look line up
To finish my project I created this line up inspired by the work I previously did for this project. I wanted to go back and look at my work and bring my ideas to a finished collection. I used pro markers and paint combined with sections cut from my blind painting. I wanted to include this painting because it showed my expression towards the song American pie, My line up was mostly influenced by my collage work which was originally inspired by my guitar. I really enjoyed this process and working from my guitar as it is something I value a lot and playing it Is a huge part of my life.

Sketch book work
Inspired by my guitar and my previous collages I started to plan my line up I came up with different designs and explored the shapes and silhouettes in each part of the body, I explored my colour palette to experiment which colours worked well together

Garment repositioning workshop
In this workshop with giordana we took clothes we had at home and experimented with them in different ways on the body, this workshop was very interesting and I was surprised at the way I could create designs from doing this. I also gained a good knowledge and understanding of the Materials as they all differed in the way they sat on the body. I really enjoyed this workshop and getting to work with garments.

Michelle Molloy drawing workshop.
In workshop one we worked from a section of a Bosch painting. Although I wasn’t drawn to the image at first, studying it I found a lot of interesting shapes and silhouettes.
In the second workshop I worked from a cassette tape, as I felt it would fit the theme of my project and the different shapes gave me a lot of possibilities. We used methods such as looking and drawing and extended arm drawing which included a paint brush been attached to a ruler.
I really enjoyed this workshop and it helped my confidence in drawing a lot, I was introduced to new methods and ways which I can approach drawing in the future

Using my colour palette I wanted to create a blind painting listening to the song American Pie. I expressed the song through light and dark colours combined with sharp and curved shapes. I cut of some of my previous designs and placed them on top to experiment with this through fashion.

Taking photographs of my guitar I digitally cut out sections and collaged them together . I enjoyed doing this and think the outcome created good shape and textures.

I used cassette tapes on the human figure as a way of visually representing music as fashion. I had no set goal for this outcome and worked from my imagination, as I wanted to create something more free flowing than my previous work. I really enjoyed working with this tape as it manipulated itself in different ways each time I placed it on the page, which gave me different outcomes every time.

Christian Marclay is visual artist that explores the connection between sound, noise, photography film and video. This work captures the motion of cassette tapes unspooling. I think this work is very interesting and I am fascinated at the possibilities of representing music visually.

Motoko Ishii used cassette tapes, to create a visual interpretation of the song Last Flowers by Radiohead. Ishii is a design student in The school of visual arts in New York. This piece was part of an assignment ‘Visual Arts’ where the students were asked to express a piece of music using tools of typography. I find this work very inspiring as it shows the creativity possible from using experimental mediums.

Moving my project forward, I wanted to incorporate my colour palette to my work. I projected a sketch book page where I had explored this palette through a pattern. I found this gave a very interesting outcome, and the Pixels added an unusual texture. This was a very efficient way of visualising colour.

Using my previous post as a primary source, I broke the shapes down further by taking sections off the drawing and cutting them out on black paper. I then experimented with collage using the human figure as an initial Visual to alchemise these shapes into fashion.
