Project statement:
I began exploring the theme of movement by looking at different styles of fighting. This was fun but after awhile it became a bit stale and I found myself just making inflatable figures in the sculpture workshops so I quickly changed over to exploring flight and how wings and feathers move when flying through the air. I explored my theme of flight through the 3 electives animation/sculpture and photography. I had a lot of fun in all and felt that I successfully weaved my theme of flight through all of them.

Artist Anicka Yi offers a vision of a new ecosystem within the Turbine Hall, the large post-industrial space at the heart of Tate Modern.Originally part of Bankside Power Station, the hall was built to house electricity-generating machinery. Yi’s installation populates the space with machines once again. Floating in the air, her machines – called aerobes – are based on ocean life forms and mushrooms. They re-imagine artificial intelligence, and encourage us to think about new ways machines might inhabit the world. Yi has also created unique scentscapes which change weekly, with odours linked to a specific time in the history of Bankside.Yi is known for her experimental work which explores the merging of technology and biology. Through breaking down distinctions between plants, animals, micro-organisms and machines, she asks us to think about further understanding ourselves as humans and the ecosystems we live in.

This is an experiment I did with paper feathers I made hoping to capture the simple moments of a bird spreading its wing open.

Inspiration: According to classical Greek legend, Daedalus was a master craftsman who was most famously responsible for creating the Labyrinth on Crete, which contained the Minotaur. Because of his knowledge of the Labyrinth, Minos, the king of Crete, shut him up in a tower to prevent him from spreading that knowledge. Daedalus therefore set about building himself and his young son Icarus sets of wings, so that they could fly from the island and escape. Ovid’s Metamorphoses describe how they did this, tying feathers together, securing them at their midpoints with string, then at their bases using beeswax. Once Daedalus had completed his own set of wings, he found that flapping them in the manner of a bird generated lift

Inspiration: how to train your dragon I used this to help with my animation story board when completing my tasks. I thought the flap made for toothlesses tail really linked in well with the wings I was making and my theme of flight

With this animation I really wanted to capture the swooping motion of the dragon along with the force behind his powerful wings that he uses to posture up before scorching the castle. Found the ever changing moment of the drawing quite cool

The process and different stages I went through when creating this sculpture. I started of by making a strong base out of wire for the part I really wanted to focus on which is the wings. After this I wrapped clay around them leaving them to dry long enough so that they would be able to stay up by themselves. After this I started to piece the whole sculpture together.
