Miu Miu pre-fall 2020
The cardigan worn by Harry Styles became very popular to remake over a year ago. On social media everyone was trying to recreate this patchwork piece.
This piece id beautiful and timeless. During this year patchwork had become extremely popular and i believe it will remain so for Summer 2022. Patchwork has become so popular because during lockdown everyone was looking for a hobby and people began to learn new skills. Also people have started to care about the environment a lot more inn recent times, patchwork is very sustainable and this might also be a reason for its popularity.

Swatches
Tumblr media
After draping on the mannequin I decided to create a swatch in the same colour way. I really like how this turned out. If we had been given a longer brief I would have created something out of this such as a skirt or shorts.

Summer 2022 Trends
Tumblr media
This mood board encapsulates the tends i see being popular in Summer 2022.
From my research previous, I concluded that these colours will be in demand this summer.
Also the style of clothing depicted in this mood board includes trends i believe will be prominent this year such as, Loose fitting shirts, blazers, co-ord sets, monochromatic outfits, mini and maxi skirts, and leather jackets. I also predict that the neckline of the black versace blazer will come into style in cropped shirts and dresses.

Designs based off Draping
Tumblr media
These are some croquis i designed based off draping fabric on the mannequins. I chose these colours because I have predicted to be popular for the summer. I chose styles that I have envisioned to be popular this summer. The first is a co-ord suit with a cropped blazer in kelly green, hot orange, primary blue and white, to break up the colours. My second look is a mini dress with the neckline I mentioned in my ‘Summer 2022 Trends’ post in primary blue, cerulean, hot orange, and white. My final look is a co-ord bandeau top and low-rise mini skirt in hot orange, very peri, cerulean and white.

Richard Malone’s Recycled Leather Patchwork Top
This recycled multicoloured leather top is made in the UK.
“Crafted from industrial offcuts, this belted patchwork top puts a new spin on waist-not, want not and we couldn't want it more” - brownsfashion.com
This is my favourite patchwork piece I have looked at so far. The colours are cohesive and all in the same tone. The stitching of each patch makes the piece look  great. I love the diagonal lines throughout it gives the piece an element of uniqueness.

Emily Bode menswear Fall/Winter 2020-2021
I really like this collection because Bode reuses vintage quilts and table linens to produce the brand’s ‘keepsake’ creations.
I really enjoy the bright colours of this collection and the shapes of the patchwork clothing. They are very unique pieces and I think they would be worn this summer.
Her pieces are timeless:
“if you were to take a photograph of someone you would not be able to place them temporally” - Emily Bode
They are investment pieces that will not go out of fashion. I enjoy the sustainable thinking of the brand.

I decided to use colours I think will be popular this summer. I really like the different sized patchwork in rectangles. I made a crop top, which will stay in style this summer.

Summer 2022 Trends
Tumblr media
I made this mood board focusing on denim and leather patchwork. I thought it was important to include these two fabrics because they are timeless Leather especially has become a large focus point of a lot of trends and outfits in the passed few years and I don't see it going out of style. Denim has always been in style, it can be worn casually or dressed up.

Summer 2022 Colours
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I researched what popular brands were selling for the summer time. i noticed a trend in the colours that were coming up for most stores. These bright colours will be very popular for the summer. Primary blue, tangy lime, hot orange, cerulean, radiant yellow, and  kelly green will be the colours of  the summer according to an article by stylecaster.com and pantone.com.
When I was searching for websites i found these headers that support the colours I believe will be most prominent this summer;

Summer 2022 Patterns
Tumblr media
This summer I believe patterns like these will be a trend. Shops such as, https://peppermayo.com/ and  https://withjean.com/ ’s new collection are full of patterns like these. They are graphic, newspaper/postcard style fabrics.

Patchwork in Painting
Picasso, Guernica
Tumblr media
When I thought of patchwork in different disciplines, cubism in painting came to mind. They brought different views of subjects together in the same picture, resulting in paintings that appear fragmented and abstracted. This is similar to how in patchwork, pieces of fabric are sewn together to creative a new piece.

Patchwork in Sculpture (metal)
Gaulmier Jean-Luc, Sofa patchwork, 2016
Tumblr media
This sculpture is made from salvaged metal that has been welded together.
artsper.com
Paul Evans, Important and rare Patchwork sculpture , ca. 1960–1969
Tumblr media
This piece is made similarly by welded polychromed and patinated steel.
The similarities between these pieces and patchwork are clear. The metal has been reused and joined together to make a new piece.

Most Impressive patchwork
Most expensive quilt ever sold:
Tumblr media
The most expensive quilt ever sold at auction is a Civil War-era quilt known as the Reconciliation Quilt. It was  bought for $264,000 at Sotheby’s in 1991. It is now at the International Quilt Study Center at the University of Nebraska .Your quilt may not be worth that much today, but it may be 100 years from now.

Albert Small:
Tumblr media
Mr. Small operated heavy machinery and handled explosives in the sand pits of the Ottawa Silica Sand Company. During the 1930s, Mr. Small's wife, Eva, belonged to a quilting group. Mr. Small sometimes teased members of the group about their work and one day they challenged him to do better. In 1951, one of the headlines on a "Ripley's Believe It or Not!" newspaper column read: "Albert Small makes a MOSAIC quilt with the largest number of pieces ever sewed!"

Patchwork in different countries
By the early 1800s patchworking had appeared in many countries, particularly England. In 19th-century America, patchwork was used for bedding and for decorative pieces to show the needlewoman’s skill. At the end of the Civil War, thousands of cotton print fabrics appeared, along with patterns published in newspapers, women’s magazines, and other sources.
In the late 19th and early 20th century saw the popularity of the whole-cloth quilt, a traditional skill passed on through the generations in Wales, the North Country and the Scottish Borders. Each area developed their own particular style and popular motifs, with feathers and twisted ropes common in the North Country and leaves and spirals often found in Wales.

Origin of Patchwork
China & Egypt:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Patchwork originated around 5,000 years ago to early age China and Egyptian tombs. It was used for their clothes, wall decorations, draperies, furniture, quilts, and bags.
Earliest pieces of patchwork have been dated back to the early Middle Ages, where layers of quilted fabric were used in the construction of armor, to keep the soldiers warm and protected. Japanese armor was made in a similar fashion.

Settlers traveling to America:
Early settlers travelling to America from Britain and the Netherlands carried household fabric as part of their luggage. Clothes and linen wore out over time and the settlers wanted to keep some reminders of their home land. They  set about reusing the better pieces of fabric, from the worn out items, to create new cloth. In the early years new fabric was scarce and very expensive so patchwork was necessary.
