Senses project
Clay+project

For my clay plus project I incorporated both material(string and rope) and glass. For my project I looked at mainly my sense of smell in my work environment which is a restaurant. I wanted to show how the smell of oil is what I am surrounded by and the feeling of greasy after a long shift at work. For my project I created functional pieces with my own personal flair which was a huge challenge for me as I had never made functional ceramic works before. I really enjoyed the challenge of creating functional pieces which the majority of were hand built rather than thrown. I similarly really enjoyed incorporating painting in my project by means of underglazing work and through my sketch book. Overall the project was a huge learning experience as I now have an improved understanding of the basics of ceramics and how every failure and mishap is a learning experience.

Learning experiences

Due to dipping the spoons in the glaze several times I removed the glaze rather than adding more glaze which was my intention. So after the firing the spoons were rough in texture and as per my previous post the glass pieces were a failed process due to too much glass and possibly the glass used or the temperature of the kiln. Both of these processes were a learning experience.

Failed glass melting ceramic pieces

In my opinion these ceramic pieces were a major fail but a good learning process and experience. Yet still I don’t know what happened and why the firing didn’t turn out in the way I expected but I’m glad I tried the process as part of the clay + project and rather than a failed process I’m going to call it a learning experience.

The pictures above were my desired outcome for the piece. For the pieces I reckon I should have used smaller shards of glass and a smaller quantity of glass.

Onion ring wind chime

Ceramic olives and onion rings.
As part of the clay plus project I completed an onion ring ceramic wind chime piece. I completed the piece to feed into my senses project.
Onion rings
Smell
Touch
Taste
Hearing
My aim with the piece was to make a chime that was bell like as I work in hospitality I constantly hear the bell ringing to run food from the pass. The onion rings incorporate the smell, taste and touch and the chime incorporates the sound.
Due to the string the chime doesn’t mutes the sound but the intention was there.

Due to association I always associate onion rings with kids colour stacking rings. Above is an image of my glazed rings.

Glass melted dishes:

The dishes once I put underglaze on them before I placed my titanium glaze on them. I used titanium glaze as it could be fired at the 1200 firing and be fired again after with transparent glaze so that the pieces could be functional.

I used a 120 white wine bottle and glass bulmers bottle for the project.

The materials I used to break the glass I wore gloves and goggles to protect my eyes and hands.

As the project is a clay plus I included glass in my pieces In both my olive dishes and snack dishes I included glass.

Here are sample dishes that inspired my pieces .

Tool I used to shave and sand down my pieces.
I then used a damp sponge to smooth the pieces down.

Sample of one of the pieces I used the grater to shave down… this piece I completed was thrown on the wheel.

Upon firing my pieces I began painting them with underglaze before firing them with a clear glaze or olive green glaze
